A Closer Look
On the front of the unit is a soft mesh that covers the powerful dual 40mm drivers with a max output of 3W each. At the top center of the mesh there is also a built in LED indicator that will flash blue to indicate that the unit is powered on and ready to go. It will also flash blue and red while in pairing mode. A flashing red will indicate low battery.
As you can see below, the exterior of the Groovy consists of a sleek aluminum body that is definitely an attention grabber. Measuring in at 3”(H)x 7.3”(L)x 2.1”(D) it is relatively small which is great for taking it with you on the go whether it be to work or for your next get together with your friends and family.
As already mentioned the unit comes with two interchangeable straps. This is a simple yet very attractive feature that LUXA2 has added to this product. It adds an elegance that most competitor products of this caliber seem to lack. And the best part of it…it’s real leather.
On the back you can see the LUXA2 logo along with a slew of certifications and licensing. You will also notice the USB input of 5V 500mAh which will segway us to the buttons provided on the top of the unit.
Let’s talk speaker controls. From left to right we will start with the AUX port which is for the included 3.5mm analog cable which is primarily needed if you are wanting to output audio from a device that does not have bluetooth capabilities. Next up is the power button used also for pairing devices to the unit by simply holding down the button until the built in LED indicator flashes red/blue.
The next trio of buttons are the main controls. The first is the volume down, then the play/pause button, followed by the volume up. As you can see the play/pause button is also used to pick up/hang up any calls that may come in while connected to your mobile phone or tablet. Which can come in pretty handy if you are involved in a conference call for work or possibly chatting with family and friends because let’s be honest; most mobile devices do not come with speakers powerful enough for those very important conversations where you wish you had that little extra boost in volume.
Next is the micro USB port used to charge the internal 1,800mAh / 3.7V Lithium Ion battery that powers the unit. Since micro USB is pretty much the standard in terms of charge ports for today’s current devices this is obviously a necessity. But what is out of the ordinary is the choice of placement. In most devices the charge port can be found on the rear or sometimes on the side of the unit but by the charge port on the top of the unit mixed in with all the main controls seems a little strange. Especially when you want to be able to use the speaker while charging and to have such a sexy looking piece of art sitting on top of your desk with the ugliness of a charge cable ruining it. It just doesn’t work for me. Granted this isn’t a huge gripe in my eyes I can’t expect others to see it the same way.
Finally we get to the built in microphone. While I know that this doesn’t sound like a big deal for some because let’s face it; it’s a microphone. I love it because when I have a bluetooth speaker with this level of portability I want to be able to use it for just about anything I might need it for and that includes using it as a loud speaker for conference calling or video chatting while using my tablet.
