Linksys Introduces New Modem Router and More DD-WRT Support

Linksys is one of the biggest manufacturers of routers and network equipment in general, but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t room for a more devices as well as room for improvement on the current lineup. Linksys’ new modem router is the X6200 and it is a combined cable and ADSL/VDSL dual-band WiFi model.

The Linksys X6200 supports pretty much any connection you can have from static RJ45-based over cable to DSL connections and I wouldn’t be one bit surprised if you could use the included USB 2.0 port to attach a 3G/4G/LTE modem too. While it can connect to pretty much any type of internet connection, the built-in cable modem might be the selling point for this router. The internet connection speed has gone up and up, but a lot of cable modems lack the capability to handle the fast speeds your provider is selling you, which in return means that you’ll get a worse experience than you should.

“There is a lack of knowledge when it comes to cable modems. Consumers have cable modems or gateways that don’t match the cable broadband subscriptions they are paying for – thus getting slower speeds and frustrating experiences,” said Justin Doucette, director of product management, Linksys.

The Linksys X6200 isn’t the fastest wireless router, but the speeds of 300Mbps on the 2.4GHz band and 433Mbps on the 5GHz band should be sufficient for any internet usage. The modem router also features four RJ45 LAN ports for that direct Gigabit Ethernet connection that will provide you with the best connection. As previously mentioned, the X6200 also features a USB 2.0 port that can turn your USB drive into a network attached storage device.

The new Linksys X6200 modem router will be available in March 2016 for an MSRP of £79.99 and also has more advanced features such as parental control and guest access.

Feature highlights

TeamGroup’s M152 Is a Lot More Than Just a Flash Drive

Team Group released a new flash drive shortly before Christmas and at first, I totally skipped this news. I skimmed it and it all the M152 drive looked like was a clever but ordinary flash drive. It didn’t look much different then the TeamGroup M131 flash drive that we reviewed a while ago either. Today I came across it again and I had to find out why it was worth a press release. To my surprise, this is anything but an ordinary flash drive that will work on both your PC and Android OTG devices as it has a few extra smart-features that can come in very handy.

Let us first have a look at the basic specifications, altho they aren’t spectacular. We get a USB 2.0 and micro USB flash drive with a capacity of either 8GB, 16GB, or 32GB. The drive itself is only a nano-drive and won’t take up much space while the rest is the OTG adapter that also works with other USB devices such as keyboards and mice on OTG compliant Android devices. With a USB 2.0 interface, we’re limited to a theoretical max of 60MB/s, so the drive won’t break any speed records.

The really clever part of TeamGroup’s M152 is the built-in wireless capabilities and app support. Simply plug the drive into your PC and link it with your Android device in order to simply drag files from your computer and onto the Android device. You can also share the Android device screen onto your computer monitor and operate it fully from there. Answer calls, type text or play your favourite mobile game with the convenience of your PC with your mouse and keyboard.

This could be a really cool feature that I could see myself using on a daily basis. I hate having to grab my phone every time it wants something from me and with a device like the TeamGroup M152 I wouldn’t have to anymore.

Netis WF2150 N600 Wireless Dual Band USB Adapter Review

Introduction

Most of the existing stationary PCs don’t have wireless network capabilities out of the box and there can be more than one reason to add it at a later time. There are quite a few ways you can do that, but the easiest is probably with a USB-type WiFi dongle. Today I’m taking a closer look at just such a device as I’m having the Netis WF2150 600N Dual Band Wireless USB Adapter on the test bench.

The Netis WF2150 is a Dual Band wireless solutions that provides you with access to the better and less crowded 5GHz band as well as giving you a legacy 2.4GHz connection, both at 300Mbps. The 5GHz is clearly the best band to use whenever possible as you don’t need to worry about the interferences from the mass of existing 2.4GHz wireless devices and household appliances that may disturb with their wireless signal.

Whether you’ll be using the wireless connection for online gaming, video streaming, or VoIP phone calling, the Netis WF2150 should ensure a high-quality connection at all times. Connecting the PC itself to a wireless network is however not the only way you can use the newly gained WiFi abilities. Pretty much every WiFi add-on available right now can be set to work as an access point too, allowing you to connect your other WiFi devices to your network through this adapter. Always have the best possible wireless connectivity for your smartphone and tablets right next to your system.

The adapter only features a USB 2.0 connector, but that should be plenty for the performance that the wireless network can perform. You’ll also find a small LED near the USB plug that will indicate the connection state.

The Netis WF2150 comes with a WPS button that allows for a simple and secure setup and connection to other devices. With just a press on the button as well as the button on your router or any other WPS-enabled device and the connection is established. No need to remember and manually enter complicated passwords when you don’t need to.

The bundled drivers and utility enable easy management of your networks and come with an absolute hassle free installation. A few clicks and you’re up and running. There are plenty of setting possible from band and channel choice to the operation mode and security.

Specifications

Packaging and Accessories

The package is designed in the same way that most Netis devices are and it is easy to recognize. On the front, you’ll find the basic relevant information such as compatibility with Windows 8, Mac OS, and Linux.

The rear of the package holds a little more information in several languages. Inside is a user manual, driver disk, and the USB WiFi adapter itself.

Diamond DS3900V2 UltraDock Docking Station Review

Introduction

It doesn’t matter if you got the new Apple Macbook with just one USB port or any other system, you always have too few, especially on your portable computers. The Diamond DS3900 Ultra Dock Dual Video USB 3.0/2.0 docking station enables multiple USB devices, monitors, and a network to be connected to the computer using a single USB3.0 cable. It doesn’t matter if you want to connect to your large screen displays, stereo speakers, external hard drive, optical disk drive, printer, USB keyboard, mouse or any other USB devices, the DS3900 has it covered.

Any laptop, Ultrabook, MacBook, just as well as any other PC, can connect to the Diamond DS3900 Ultra Dock docking station, eliminating the need to plug in all USB peripherals and external monitor every time you come into the office or go back home. Just plug in the one USB 3.0 cable from the docking station to any USB 3.0 or USB 2.0 port on the laptop and your displays and accessories will be activated in seconds.

Most laptop manufacturers also build some sort of docking station for their systems, but they usually come with a pretty hefty price as well as being limited for use with specific models. Not so with Diamond’s universal solution. One of the big advantages of having a docking station at home, is that you don’t need to connect every single cable when you get home, a single one will do the trick and all your hardware is hooked up. Even audio is covered.

The single USB 3.0 uplink provides two USB 3.0 ports where one of them supports quick charge (BC1/2 battery charging function) for iPad and iPhones. Further, it has four USB 2.0 ports as well as an IEEE 802.3, 802.3u, and 802.3ab compatible RJ45 Gigabit Ethernet port with full support for IPv4 and IPv6, full-duplex, and flow control. Just like it should be.

On the video side of things, the DS3900 is using a DisplayLink DL-3900 chipset and it supports 1080p HDMI and DVI dual digital video output. Extend or mirror your display onto another monitor or set an external connected monitor as your default one, you won’t notice any difference between the use of this docking station and a native connection. It supports High Resolution up to 2048 x 1152 and the entire unit is DisplayLink certified. Audio connections shouldn’t be left out, and they aren’t. It has two 3.5mm stereo jacks for audio output and microphone input.

The Diamond docking station measures 234 x 86 x 33 mm and weighs just 450 grams, light enough to make it portable as well. It does require Windows 7 Mac OS X, and newer versions to work, 1GB of memory, a 1.2GHz or faster SSE2 supporting CPU and 30MB free space for the installation and 10MB hard disk space for the drivers.

Besides the large rubber foot underneath the docking station, it also features a vertical stand for different optics and a smaller footprint. The metal foot is heavy enough to give the station a sturdy stand, even when heavy cables are connected to it. The rubber foot can be slid off and then you just hang the station onto the stand. Very simple and it looks awesome.

Diamond created a what looks to be a solid docking station, one where you only need to connect one cable to your system and in return you get full connectivity including dual display, audio, network, and USB 3.0 speed.

The package includes everything that you need, including a DVI to VGA adapter, power supply, vertical stand, USB cable, manuals, and driver disk.

Enermax Mighty Charger ECR301 & ECR 501 Card Reader and Front Panel Review

Introduction

It is rare that a chassis has all the front connection you want or need, especially if you need more than few USB ports and maybe an SD card reader. If you feel like that, then Enermax’s Mighty Charger ECR301 and ECR501 Card Reader and front panels might be just the right thing for you.

The ECR301 is the 3.5-inch model that naturally doesn’t have as many options as the bigger brother. Less volume is a natural limitation. It still packs a 5-in-1 multi-card reader that can access most mainstream cards such as CF, Micro SD, SD, RSMMC, MS, and M2.

Since cards aren’t for everybody, it also has a USB 2.0 Super Charge port with up to 2.4A charging power, three normal USB 2.0 ports, a USB 3.0 and an eSATA port. There aren’t many storage mediums you can’t connect an arsenal like that at your disposal.

The bigger ECR501 5.25-inch model packs the same great features as the ECR301 but kicks it up another notch. The card reader has been extended to a 6-in-1 card reader that also takes Extreme Digital cards.

It has six USB 2.0 ports next to the USB 2.0 Super Charge, USB 3.0 and eSATA port. It packs even more features when turning it around, having the ability to mount both two 2.5-inch and one 3.5-inch drive into the enclosure.

That is a lot of expansion ability in a single expansion slot, probably the most you’ll find.

ADATA Launches New Smart OTG microReader

ADATA has launched a new smart OTG microReader that combines a microUSB and standard USB connectors to share files among different devices such as mobile phones, tablets and PCs. The normal USB connector acts as the microSD card reader at the same time, resulting in a very small device.

The microReader is compatible with OTG devices running Android 4.0 or higher without the need for further cables or adapters. On-The-Go devices can be extremely useful as we’ve seen in some of our recent reviews and as such it’s great to see more devices being released. It supports all microSD, microSDHC and microSDXC cards, simply insert the card into the base of the standard USB connector.

The adapter has a slim design that should prevent interference with other attached USB devices and comes in several packages. You can get the adapter alone or packed with microSDHC or microSDXC cards up to 64GB.

Lexar JumpDrive M20 2-in-1Flash Drive Review

Introduction

There are thousands of USB sticks and flash storage on the market and as we all know, they’re not all built the same. Lexar, by Micron, know a lot about flash-based storage and have come out with their JumpDrive M20 Flashdrive. The M20 is a drive that combines many things seen prior, but not in the same product.

The JumpDrive M20 supports USB On-the-Go (OTG) and can be plugged directly into a compatible smart device for easy file transfers. Since all smart devices use a USB 2.0 micro port in this area, there wasn’t any need to make the drive complicated by adding USB 3 micro connector or having to include adapters of sorts. A flash-drive needs to stay simple, but we would still like to have the best possible speeds when we connect this drive to our PC, because it supports that too with its USB 3.0 connector. Plug it directly into your PC or other USB 3 capable device and you can get read speeds up to 120MB/s and write speeds up to 55MB/s. For example, you could transfer a 3GB HD video clip in less than one minute.

Both USB connectors are retractable with the slider on the side of the drive. Push it all the way to either side to expose the corresponding connector or park it in the middle when not in use. It couldn’t be much simpler than that. There sadly aren’t any covers over the plugs themselves when retracted, which I prefer to have on my flash drives as I always get dirt trapped when they’re  in my pockets.

The OTG function is primarily, but not exclusively, an Android function and the JumpDrive is designed to work with Android systems. To help you make sure that your device is compatible, Lexar placed a QR-code right on the front of the box for you to check before you even take the drive into your hands in a shop. Of course, you can also view the list from the Lexar homepage.

The Lexar JumpDrive M20 makes it a breeze to get files from your smart phone or tablet and move them over to a flash drive, something that otherwise requires a cable or wireless connection to your PC. With OTG, that’s a thing of the past and the best of all is that it is plug and play.

The JumpDrive M20 is backward compatible with USB 2.0 devices, officially  compatible with PC and Mac systems and works with the Astro File Manager that can be downloaded from the Google Play store. It also comes backed by a nice three-year warranty and a long-time experience from the company behind it all.

Apacer Launches AH154 “Star Wish Drive” USB 3.0 Waterproof Flash Drive

Apacer has gone a little mushy and released the Star Sand USB 3.0 Flash Drive to “Guard your every little wish!”. The new AH154 Star Wish Drive is available as 8GB, 16GB, 32GB and 64GB capacities while being waterproof, dustproof and shockproof to protect those valuable stored memories.

“We all remember that we have once received a glass bottle filled with white star sands. We sealed our wishes in the bottle with a cork and waited for them to come true. For many people, star sands carry numerous romantic memories. Each grain of pure white and perfect star sand represents unforgettable memories and promises.”

The compact and light drive has full IPX7 waterproof features and comes with a chain to hang the drive on a bag, key ring or mobile strap. The chain acts as a cap holder at the same time, so you won’t lose or forget it. Apacer also launched the AH139 simultaneously and is the USB 2.0 little brother to the AH154. The aqua blue and pure white dual-color drive is available as 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB capacities.

The new Star Wish Drives also come bundled with the free-of-charge ACE compression software that can increase the capacity by up to 500%.

Team Group M131 16GB Dual Flash Drive Review

Introduction

The limited storage in mobile devices can be a real problem just as the fact that a touchscreen rarely is the optimal input device. Both these things might be a thing of the past if you invest in a Team Group M131 Smart Dual Drive with OTG support that. I’m taking a closer look at 16GB model of just this drive today.

Whether you want to create a copy of the files you got on your mobile device onto a flash drive or just want to create backups, switch out content or extend the internal storage for a while, the M131 USB drive is here for you. You just slide the cover back and plug it into your OTG capable device.

Once we have our files copied from the smartphone or tablet onto the M131 flash drive, we would like to be able to use it our PC that doesn’t have a micro USB port. For this purpose, the M131 is designed as a two piece drive. Simply pull it apart and you’ll expose the normal USB 2.0 connector and have a flash drive like you’re used to from all the other ones you have.

Plugging it apart also exposes the third feature of this flash drive, the separate OTG adapter that you can use to connect compliant devices directly to your tablet or smartphone and this includes USB keyboards, mice and hard drives.

The surface is made from a matte anti-fingerprint material and it has a slide cap design over the Micro USB port to prevent dust gathering and collisions to the somewhat weaker point compared to a normal USB plug. Like most flash drives, the M131 also comes with a strap hole slings to carry it more convenient and prevent unnecessary loss and searches.

Finally, the dual design with the OTG Converter is a lot more convenient than a cable in most cases and the 2-in-1 design plugged together avoids the trouble of missing pieces and searching the cable.

The compact size of just 44 x 16.6 mm and weighing just 6.6 grams make this drive highly portable. It comes backed with a lifetime warranty and is available in three capacities: 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB.

PNY Launches HP v231w “Goat” Flash Drive

PNY Technologies has officially announced the limited edition HP v231w USB flash drive to coincide with the Chinese New Year. What 2015, the Year of the Goat, will do for Goat Simulator, I do not know. But what I do know is that PNY has released this specially designed flash drive crafted with gold housing and finished with electronic plated durable metallic casing makes HP v231w a unique and high-quality flash drive.

The USB 2.0 drive doesn’t just carry your files, it also kinda protects them with the durable casing that is both water and dust-proof. There should be a right fit for everyone with capacities ranging from 16 to 64GB.

The 4.5 gram light HP v231w measures 4.5 x 12.2 x 34.6 mm and will be released as a limited edition that is HP compatible and branded. Support is listed for Windows 2000/ XP / Vista, 7, 8, Mac OS: 10.3 and above, but I can not see why anything with USB port shouldn’t be able to use it. It comes backed by a two-year warranty within the date of purchase.

ASRock X99 Extreme 6 Motherboard Pictured

A week ago we saw the new X99 workstation motherboard from ASRock, the X99 WS. Now it has become time to see the gaming variant of this board, called the ASRock X99 Extreme 6.

The board of course supports the  Haswell-E processor and has eight DRR4 memory slot that supports up to 128GB of memory. There is an onboard USB port at the top right and 3 dual USB2 headers at the bottom of the board. Two USB3 headers are located above the ten SATA3 6GB/s ports. Onboard power- and reset-buttons as well as debug LED are at the bottom right corner. We can also spot the by now well known Pure Sound 7 chip. It also has an Ultra M.2 slot, three PCIe x16 slot that support SLI and CrossFire setups and two PCIe x1 slots.

Additional power can be supplied to the board by a molex connecter below the CPU area.

On the IO area we can spot two USB 2.0 ports, a combined PS/2 port for mouse and keyboard, six USB 3.0 ports, Dual Gigabit RJ45 ports, eSATA and 7.1 Audio jacks. Close to everything you could need.

ASRock X99 Extreme 6 will be officially released next week, where we’ll find out the exact specifications and price.

The PNY LEGO USB Flash Drive Is Here

PNY has shared the information on the new LEGO USB Flash Drive. This is great news for me, or rather my three nephews. They have been pestering me since they heard about this the first time around Christmas, and I haven’t been able to get them for them yet. That has changed now and the LEGO brick USB stick is available in 16GB size for $12.99. That is actually not a bad price considering it is LEGO branded. Each LEGO USB Flash Drive also comes with an additional LEGO brick for “extra building fun”.

  • Includes one LEGO USB Flash Drive and one LEGO brick
  • The LEGO USB Flash Drive has a capless, sliding design
  • The included key-fob easily attaches to the key ring for on the go storing and fun
  • The LEGO USB Flash Drive and additional LEGO brick are compatible with all LEGO brick toys for endless fun

Specifications wise the stick is USB 2.0 and there are no official speed descriptions. This most likely means that it will be around 7-10MB/s write and read speeds. It is compatible with most PC & MAC laptop and desktop computers with an available USB 2.0 port. The stick measures 1.20 x 0.50 x 0.22 inch and has an operating temperature of 0° to 60° C and a storage temperature tolerance of -25° to 85° C. It comes with a One-Year Warranty and free technical support.

For now the drive only appears to be available in blue, but I’m sure that will change. Specially considering the first image above.

Apacer Launches AH334 Galaxy Express USB 2.0 Flash Drive

Apacer launches the latest AH334 “Galaxy Express” USB 2.0 flash drive inspired by the stylish bullet train. The new drive comes in two colours, Starry Blue and Rose Pink and with an “intimate design of a hidden push key and a personalized grommet.”

With a unique streamlined look, the design of Apacer AH334 is inspired by bullet train’s shape for low wind resistance, highlighting a perfect balance between speed and large capacity. The designer team of Apacer meticulously offers two stunning colours– understated and chic “starry blue”and lively “rose pink”, turning the flash drive into a distinctive, stylish accessory.

With the design concept of “pleasant experience from every use”, Apacer focuses not only on the appearance, but on the detailed user experience enhancement. In addition to the excellent hand feel provided by the back material, the hidden push key provides the combination of intuition, ease-of-use and appearance integrity. The specially designed texture on the surface makes it easy to hold. The built-in grommet allows users to freely attach favourite ornaments to create personal style, or integrates the flash drive with straps or badges, bringing more convenience.

AH334 adopts the USB 2.0 interface and supports main operating systems available on the market such as Windows, Mac OS, Linux, etc. Equipped with a capacity up to 64 GB, the flash drive is capable of storing 16,000 MP3 songs or 21,000 photos, and renders portable HD movies. Available in multiple capacities (4GB, 8GB, 16GB and 32GB), AH334 comes with ACE compression software that can boost the capacity by up to 500%. With emphasis on environmental protection, AH334 complies with RoHS environmental regulations in an eco-friendly way. Moreover, AH334 provides lifetime warranty, fully displaying Apacer’s confidence in the premium quality!

Since neither the press release nor product page display any speeds, we can assume it’s just an ordinary USB2 stick like so many other, but with a compression feature. It does look nice though.
