Super Flower Leadex Platinum 550W Power Supply Review

Introduction & Packaging

Super Flower may not be the first name you think of when you think of power supplies, but time and time again they’ve proven they can make some of the best-performing power supplies on the market, but not only that, they also create some of the best looking PSUs, all while maintaining competitive prices. With all that in mind, I’m very excited to see their latest unit, the Leadex Platinum 550W, in the eTeknix office today.

As the name would suggest, this is an 80 Plus Platinum rated unit, that means that the unit won’t be wasting as much of your electricity, or the money you spend on your electricity build, before it gets to your system, saving you a little extra money over the time you use it; certainly no bad thing being a little more economical and green.

Equipped with a fully modular design, all the latest safety features you would expect, high levels of efficiency, a premium quality semi-passive 135mm fan cooling design, and rather uniquely, a set of LED lights in the cable connectors, adding a little extra flair to your system build.

The packaging is quite understated, giving us a stylish logo and the main spec, but nothing to indicate the design of the PSU.

Around the back, a few close up pictures of the various components, as well as a lot of technical information, such as the Japanese capacitors and the fully modular cabling design.

There’s not exactly a lot of extras in the box, just a few thumb screws and the owner’s manual, but you really don’t need much more anyway.

The cables come neatly packed away in a protective case, which is great for those who don’t need all the cables right now, but you may in the future when you upgrade and they’ll be neatly stored away.

Finally, you’ll also find the mains cable, which is nice and thick, making it durable, and comes with a good length.

SuperFlower Leadex Platinum 750W & Titanium 1000W Power Supply Review

Introduction & Packaging

SuperFlower is one of the leading names in the PSU market, with a wide range of products that cater to a wide range of budgets, although their specialty certainly seems to be in the high-end market, where they offer an impressive range, both in terms of aesthetics and performance for the enthusiast and prosumer markets. Today, I’ll be taking a look at not one, but two of the latest SuperFlower power supplies; the Platinum rated 750W and the Titanium rated 1000W.

Platinum and Titanium rated efficiencies are both very impressive, especially given that many consumers rarely shop above 80Plus Gold. The end result from these higher ratings is that the PSUs should be extremely efficient and could potentially save you some money on your electricity bill in the long run; which is no bad thing. This isn’t a head-to-head “which is best” review, as they’re both spec’d to have their own strength, one for the usual high-end user, the other is aimed a little more at the enthusiast side, so it’ll be interesting to see if spending that bit extra is really worth it overall.

Packaging and Contents – Leadex Platinum 750W

First up we have the 750W Platinum, which comes nicely packaged in a rather eye-catching box.

Around the back, we have a quick run down of all the major features; we’ll take a closer look at those in a moment.

In the box, you’ll find all the usual bits first; power cable, owners manual and some chassis mounting screws.

Overclockers UK Offers Platinum Rated SuperFlower Leadex at Gold Pricing

Overclockers UK have recently launched a promotion on the highly acclaimed SuperFlower Leadex Power Supplies. During July, Platinum rated PSUs between 550-800 Watts will be sold at the recommended pricing for Gold efficiency units. Purchasing a high quality Power Supply is essential and protects your components during surges. Without mentioning any names, the high wattage unknown brand PSUs are frankly a hazard if you use any sort of load and it’s not worth taking the risk given the pricey nature of enthusiast-grade hardware. Superflower’s Leadex range is rather special and features a semi-passable DBB 130mm fan.  This means under low power draw which doesn’t dramatically increase the PSU’s core temperature, the fan will remain off.

These units are also fully modular, adopt an active PFC and utilize unique connectors which light up white when a cable is plugged in. This adds a certain flair to the design and makes it aesthetically pleasing. To evoke that sense of quality, SuperFlower even uses a fabric finish on the cabling. While it’s nowhere near a custom braid in its finish, I was pleasantly surprised by how flexible the cabling was.  Please note that you can only use cable extensions if you want to go down the custom braided route. SuperFlower’s LED modular technology is currently a propitiatory design and not compatible with any other aftermarket cables.  On another note, the Leadex Power Supplies are an excellent investment and backed by a 5 year warranty. Overclockers UK have even replaced their test systems with SuperFlower units which shows how reliable they are. Here is the full list of technical features:

  • 100% Full Modular Cabling Design For Easy Cable Management
  • 80 PLUS ® Platinum Certified, 90% 92% 89% Efficiency At 20% 50% 100% Rated Load
  • Full Range Auto Voltage Detection Design 100V~240V (Active PFC)
  • Comply With ATX 12V. V2.2, EPS 12V. V2.91 & SSI EPS 12V. V2.92 Specification
  • Comply With Energy Star Standard & EuP (Energy Using Products) Regulation
  • Over Voltage Protection / Over Current Protection / Over Power Protection / Short Circuit Protection / Under Voltage Protection / Over Temperature Protection
  • Support All Intel/AMD Multi-Core CPU & ATX/BTX Compatible Motherboards
  • Support NVIDIA® SLI & ATI CrossFireX High Performance Graphic Card
  • Patented Easy To Use & Install Crystal Clear Cube Connectors with LED
  • More than 2,000 times On/Off test
  • Unleaded Green Materials with RoHS/WEEE Compliance
  • Perfect For Professional & High Performance Gaming System

If you haven’t heard of Superflower then it might surprise you that they manufacture the higher wattage EVGA Power Supplies which incorporate a 10 year warranty. I would like to see Superflower match this figure for piece of mind. Also, buying the product directly from Overclockers means the RMA process is done in the UK with a reputable retailer. This is very convenient as companies like Corsair require EU customers to send the PSU to the Netherlands RMA base.

SuperFlower Presents New Gunmetal Grey Power Supply @ Computex 2015

Computex 2015 – Power supply manufacturer SuperFlower has unveiled a new power supply design. This is a brand new Gunmetal Grey power supply. It will most likely be based on the same internals as the rest of the Leadex range, just in a different coloured case. The ‘Gold’ branding suggests that this will feature an 80PLUS Gold efficiency rating.

Looking at the modular cable inputs, the design is slightly different to all of the current SuperFlower power supplies, which suggests that this could be a brand new model. It features 7 ‘universal’ plugs and 2 motherboard plugs and an eco switch for low power draw tasks. The size of the power supply leads us to believe that it features a 140mm fan when compared to other SuperFlower units and that it could have a potential wattage between 650W and 1300W. However, with technology rapidly changing, this could well be a higher wattage unit.

We look forward to hear of the official specifications of this power supply and can’t wait to review it. We will keep you updated with any news and events from the rest of Computex 2015.

SuperFlower Displays Latest Products @ Computex 2015

Computex 2015 – It’s always a change of pace to look at power supplies. The market is just as fierce as the CPU, RAM, Motherboard, etc… markets, but manufacturers know that a good quality power supply will be enough over fancy gimmicks.

SuperFlower is a large brand, but is fairly low profile in the European sector; well that was until OverclockersUK started exclusively stocking them. Since that move, SuperFlower is highly regarded in the enthusiast world and one of the most famous thanks to a collaboration with Overclocker ‘8-Pack’ to produce the world’s first 2,000W power supply.

In recent years, modifying the power supply cables has become a mainstream modification. This is a very simple change to the power supply that makes a huge difference to the internals of the computer.

The range presented to us today is all previous technology from SuperFlower.

We look forward to see what SuperFlower will bring in the future. We will keep you updated with any news and events from the rest of Computex 2015.

Overclockers UK Tease Something Big

Overclockers UK are teasing that something big coming, but we have very little idea what! They have teased us with a video on their Facebook page today, but we don’t have many other clues yet.

Watching the video closely, we spotted that the PSU could be an 8pack branded Super Flower PSU. Digging a bit more and we found out that Super Flower shared the video on their own Facebook page, so they certainly have something to do with this.

How big will this be? Will it be an 8pack improved PSU? or maybe a killer new system? We’ll have to be a little more patient to find out.

Overclockers have just brought the Leadex 1600W monster PSUs to the EU, so if this is a new complete system built by 8pack, then it will one killer of a system. What do you think it is?

Superflower Leadex PSUs at Computex 2014

Computex 2014: Superflower make some impressive PSU products, and this year they did a great job of reminding us of this fact. Not only do they have a huge range of 80 Plus Titanium rated products, such as their 1600w, 1300w and 1000w, but they’re also the first in the world to score an 80Plus Titanium certificate on a 600W PSU, impressive!

Of course if you’re really looking to power a super Computex designed to take over the world, then you’re really going to want to check out this gargantuan 2000W rated monster. Not only does it pack a huge amount of power and a choice of gold and platinum certifications, but it’s also fully modular, with a massive bank of connectivity options, ideal for those wanting to power multiple ultra-high end graphics cards.
