Would You Play DOTA2 in Third-Person Shooter Mode?

Well, well… I’ve been thinking about a Dota 2 FPS-style mode for a long time now (but didn’t actually do anything about it). However, it looks like a modder out there created something similar and, if you ask me, it has transforms the gameplay into something like World of Warcraft.

A redditer first posted the mod called ‘Action Dota’, as the video title states, on the /r/Games Subreddit. Its developer, redditer BMD_, then replied to the thread a few hours later. In his post, he explains what he used and how he used it to turn Dota 2 into Action Dota 2.

“This is done as a Dota 2 mod using the Source 2 Dota 2 engine, but I did completely blow away and recreate my own keyboard/mouse control system instead of using the built in Dota controls. I created my own system of motion that allows me do to things like have characters jump and strafe, and turn at an infinite rate. In fact, no unit orders are given at all in the game, nor are any hero abilities or items used.” he stated in his post.

Though it works, the project is still in the Alpha stages. The redditer tells us that the some features do not have proper physics and that the camera ‘just works’, meaning that the mod needs a lot of work before he can get the full 3D environment set up properly.

“The camera controls are extremely hacked-in (but functional), and you can probably see in the video that each player has to select a flying enigma unit at the start which I detect and then use as the object to point the camera at. There is no facility currently available for me to manually reposition the camera except by locking the camera to the created “camera” unit, which results in some unfortunate limitations.

I currently use the built-in Dota 2 LinearProjectile system (which is used in game for things like Mirana’s arrow or Puck’s orb), but I’m going to have to tear down and recreate that entirely as it doesn’t support any 3D collisions (height is ignored) or other dynamic behavior.” he added in his post.

There’s now question that other issues will crop up in it until we see a proper final Beta, but why wait until then and not start your own project? The redditor stated that he constantly releases the systems he creates for other modders to use too; feel like making your own mod now?

Psy’s Gangnam Style Breaks YouTube

Gangnam Style, the music video by Korean K-pop star Psy, broke YouTube’s view counter.

The video, with its staggeringly high number of views outpaced YouTube’s counter, which was previously limited to 2,147,483,647 views, thanks to its use of a 32-bit integer. Gangnam Style currently has 2,155,260,965 views at time of writing.

Google has since updated the counter to use a 64-bit integer, meaning the new limit is 9,223,372,036,854,775,808, that’s over 9 quintillion.

“We never thought a video would be watched in numbers greater than a 32-bit integer (=2,147,483,647 views), but that was before we met PSY. “Gangnam Style” has been viewed so many times we had to upgrade to a 64-bit integer (9,223,372,036,854,775,808)!”

The counter on Psy’s video now comes with a little mathematical wizardry whenever you hover your cursor over it.

I’ve never particularly understood the insane popularity of the video myself, but still, I guess it pushes Justin Bieber’s ‘Baby’ into second place for most watched YouTube video. That’s definitely a good thing.

Gangnam Style Passes Two Billion Views On YouTube

Love it or hate it, Psy’s Gangnam Style has undoubtedly been the biggest hit single around the world since its début on YouTube back in 2012. Since then it has taken the world by storm and even though the are many people who can’t stand hearing the track over and over again – myself included, it appears that are large number of people around the world are still obsessed with it. There is no question of doubt that the Korean artist, who has been producing music for the last 13 years, has made the track truly unique, including the iconic ‘horse riding’ dance move and as its popularity has grown, we have seen dozens of parodies and remakes appear online.

As Psy’s fame and fortune has grown, in December 2012, only 5 months after the track was released, Gangman Style became the first video ever to pass through the 1 billion views barrier and now as the track nears its two year anniversary [so-to-speak], Psy claims another YouTube first as the video passes 2 billion hits. To put this into comparison, the next hit video on YouTube’s rankings comes from another controversial love or hate artist – Justin Beiber with his track – Baby, reaching only 1 billion views to date. To add to the list of hits, Psy claims three of the top fifteen top videos on YouTube, alongside the likes of ‘Charlie Bit My Finger – Again!’

Just in case you’ve not heard Gangman Style (in which case I’ll be asking where you’ve been for the last two years), let’s have another listen to the most popular track of the 21st Century.

Facebook Messenger Gets iOS 7 Design Refresh And New Features

Facebook just released Facebook Messenger 3.0 into the App Store and its the most significant design refresh to the app since its inception. Along with the simplified, flat interface and new iOS 7 style look and feel, Facebook Messenger 3.0 adds several new features including the ability to see which friends are using the app and on what platform (such as Mobile or Web along with the Online status in a magnificent green color on the right side) and, most notably, phone number support.

The app will guide you from the first launch on linking your phone number and contacts with the app, followed by a confirmation message for authentication.

The app has three menus, the Recent conversations tab, the People tab with all your contacts and the Settings tab. Now you can text your phone contacts even when they’re not among your Facebook friends. You can also find new Facebook contacts just by entering a phone number.

In the Settings you can see a number of features which the user can enable or disable by preference, including Notifications, Notification Preview, In-App Vibrate, In-App Sound, and the Synced Contacts feature that gives you the option to sync your device contacts with the Facebook Messenger or disable it.

However, Mobile carriers won’t be pleased with apps such as the new Facebook Messenger or Google Hangouts since they are stealing away the once dominated feature, the SMS.
