We’ve all seen the news, sometimes they just seem to be filled with doom and gloom telling us how climate change is going to flood our homes and the beaches that we love to spread our toes on when it gets sunny. To combat this threat technology has created some amazing little shelters, designed to be deployed in just a moment to help protect people when their most vulnerable from the environment.
The Better Shelter is designed as a “modular” housing system. With four windows and a lockable door, the concept behind the shelter is to be quickly deployed to create a safe and secure environment for people running from people or the weather. Solar panels are installed on the roof in order to power the lights within the structure, lasting four hours when at full charge, or less if you use the USB port included to charge your much needed mobile phone.
Designed as a home away from home, the Exo is built for the simple purpose of providing shelter. With only two pieces to clip together, once the floor is met by the shell and plugged into a power system you have four fold down beds with a variety of controls including LED lighting and climate controls. Worried about people entering your Exo? Worry not as the doors is locked and unlocked through NFC bracelets and key cards.
Daiwa Lease is known for creating structures but the EDV-01 is something a little different. Designed to be no bigger than a shipping container during transport, a press of a button releases the hydraulic lift that raises the outer shell to create a two-tiered structure in less than half a minute. Designed for quick deployment where needed, the EDV-01 deploys to contain everything you might need. With showers, toilets, and a kitchenette you can enjoy modern comforts with the second floor being dedicated to your personal space. Solar panels on the roof mean that these temporary structures can be used as offices or shelters, helping not only shelter people but create a base where they can recover.
Signing up to a dating site which offers the platform for affairs while expecting all your data to remain safe looks to be rather stupid, after the many revelations which have been exposed concerning the Ashley Madison website. If the owners thought it could not be embarrassed any further, a cracking team by the name of Cynosure prime, not affiliated with Amazons video service, has cracked roughly 11 million passwords in just 10 days.
They managed this with help from an error implemented by Ashley Madison themselves, this involved breaking the passwords which were secured using MD5 (Message Digest Algorithm) which is a faster algorithm but far less secure than others. Using the second leak of data as a study group, cynosure prime attacked the md5 tokens, the passwords were set to bcrypt which is much more secure and therefore should have been harder to crack. Problem is, cynosure prime found that the commit was changed on the 14th June 2012 to 1c833ec7, this meant accounts could be cracked which had been created prior to this date with “simple salted MD5”.
What was expected to take years to solve only took 10 days to expose such naïve security protocols within Ashley Madison’s tech structure. The era of basic security has long since ended and businesses need to understand the scale of threats which are targeting their valuable data, Mrs Madison won’t be the last to experience such data loss. This should also be yet another warning against the crusade to ban effective encryption which is an essential tool to protect consumers from web-based data theft.
If you have a spare few minutes then by all means take a look at the full detailed explanation of the techniques used to crack the passwords, its worth a read.
The BIC pen is one of the most pioneering inventions of the 21st Century and over 100 billion have been produced since 1950. 10,000 pens contributed to a marvellous piece of art by AAU Anastas, Landolf Rhode-Barbarigos from the University of Miami and Yann Santerre for the International Association for Shell and Spatial Structures (IASS) symposium in Amsterdam. The structure was designed to question how existing products are only used for specific tasks and think differently about recycling everyday goods.
As you can see, the end result is absolutely breathtaking and looks quite similar to an expensive crystal chandelier. The design team provided an insight into their ambitions:
“The BIC Cristal pen was obviously not designed to be implemented structurally. However, it has mechanical and aesthetic properties that could change its function.”
“The reflections and diffractions it creates because of its geometry are unique. This project is not about the object itself, but more about the process transforming its initial function.”
“It is about designing with components rather than norms. Thus, we designed the BIC pavilion and truly believe in this way of thinking.”
I cannot imagine how much planning and skilled work was required to make this piece but it sends a pretty powerful message. Engineers and inventors can look at existing technologies to make interesting solutions in an environmentally-friendly manner.

Do you have a hard time letting go? Possible attachment issues? Match.com has the answer for you!
Thanks to a new advancement in their technologies, Match.com now gives users the option to search for a new relationship candidate based purely on their facial structure. It has been reported that Match.com are running this service through Los Angeles-based facial recognition experts Three Day Rule – as reported by Mashable.com.
In a more scientific and positive approach, Three Day Rule’s founder Talia Goldsetin stated:
“People have a type and it’s not necessarily about height or race or hair color, but a lot of it is about face shape” Mashable.com
As with all new technology however this comes with a hefty price tag of $5,000 USD, which includes a six month total package. Not only do you get access to the facial recognition technology, but you receive a personal ‘dating guidance councillor’ (matchmaker) who will meet with you to determine your wants and needs, sift through potential applicants and even go on pre-dates to determine the candidates potential.
To help determine the type you’re after, this matchmaker will process photo’s of your ex-partners and use Three Day Rule’s software to help determine some potential matches.
Goldstein also stated:
“I’ve noticed over my years in matchmaking that people have types. I always ask my clients to send me photos of their exes. They say that they don’t have a type, but when I see the photos, to me they look very similar. The ex’s may be different ethnicities, or have different hair color, but their facial structures are the same.” Mashable.com
For those desperately seeking love, what have you got to lose? This service can be found on Match.com
PSUs play a great role in desktop configurations and with the new technologies coming out soon, Seasonic saw fit to present their solutions as well. The company has revealed at Computex 2014 its 80 PLUS Platinum series 1050 W and 1200 W, the upgraded 80 PLUS Gold X series 1050 W and 1250 W models, as well as the 80 PLUS Bronze series.
Looking at the 80 PLUS Gold X series, Seasonic appears to have made the series fully modular. What that means is users will not have to deal with a whole bunch of unused cables taking space in their PC case, rather the company has given the ability to choose what cables the user requires and giving him the option to manually attach them. Also, the X series PSUs have been granted the Hybrid Silent Fan Control support, in addition to an upgraded D2D platform.
The latest and most powerful of the series, the 80 PLUS Platinum series, having an up to 92% efficiency, is said to feature a full array of ultra-efficient power supplies, ranging from 400 W to 1200 W, having all models fully modular. A special fanless model will be included in the series which Seasonic believes will be ‘sought’ by many users for its performance and noise level ratio.
Seasonic has introduced a new Honeycomb structure air vents design to both of its PSU series described above, including the 80 PLUS Bronze S12II, with efficiency of up to 85%, allowing for an optimum air circulation and heat dispersion. The S12II also seems to feature black-coloured flat cables and silent 120mm FLuid Dynamic Bearing fans. In addition, the 80 PLUS Bronze M12II Evo features all of the S12II’s characteristics, along with Fluid Dynamic Bearing fans and an extreme silent mode, activated when the PC is not requiring a lot of power to process applications.
