Nintendo Celebrating 20th Anniversary of Pokémon

Most people will remember the little pocket monsters (more commonly known as Pokémon). From the cute little Pikachu to the unstoppable power of Mewtwo, the classics of which many grew up either as parents or children. To celebrate Pokémon’s 20th Anniversary, Nintendo is releasing a whole bunch of Pokémon content to celebrate.

Styled after Tekken Tournament, Pokken Tournament will see you facing your favourite Pokémon off in epic, fast-paced real-time battles. With characters like Charizard and Mewtwo making appearances alongside some of the newer generations. With at least 16 fighters, with Magikarp (we don’t understand either) and Sylveon amongst those that are already named. Initially released as an arcade game in Japan, as with many games it didn’t take long for it to reach the rest of the world.

Set for a March 18th release date worldwide you could be fighting your favourite classics against each other sooner than originally expected.

As we mentioned before this is a big year for Pokémon with it marking 20 years since the series started. To mark this date, Nintendo are releasing a special 3DS with the original Pokémon red and blue pre-installed with interchangeable face plates of the classic Charizard and Blastoise. If this wasn’t enough you will also be able to download the games and Pokémon yellow from the Nintendo store.

If you own Pokémon X, Y, Alpha Sapphire or Omega Red you are in for a treat with monthly mythical Pokémon distributions starting February. With the likes of Celebi and Mew appearing in their announcement video (which you can find below).

Grand Theft Auto 5 PC Users Faced with Login Problems over the Weekend

Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto 5 has just hit the PC platform and it already had its fair share of problems. Users with ‘unique’ usernames have been extremely disappointed when attempting to install or play the GTA 5 title over the weekend, having been greeted with the “Rockstar update service is unavailable (code 1)” message.

By ‘unique’ usernames, we mean to say that users with characters outside the alphanumeric table are facing the issue described above. Now let’s stop and think about that for a second… really? I mean how in the world did you not see this coming? Going on a simple forum or scrolling through your list of Steam/Uplay/Origin/Windows/etc usernames reveals the “0b\/|0u$”. People have been creative with their usernames for ages now.

Rockstar Support provided some information on their website, which reads as following:

“We have identified an issue where players with Windows usernames that include characters not found in the table at the bottom of this page will likely run into difficulties when attempting to download, install, or play GTAV. We are currently working on a fix for this issue.”

The company’s support has even stated to have had temporary alternative for the issue, but it involves creating a fresh account. While this gave you access to the game, you wouldn’t have had any previous achievements, friends or stats as on your regular account. Even so, who would want to play on a temporary account and lose everything when they have to switch back to their old one?

A full list of supported characters, according to Rockstar, read as following: “A a B b C c D d E e F f G g H h I i J j K k L l M m N n O o P p Q q R r S s T t U u V v W w X x Y y Z z 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9”

This is now in the past though, since Polygon reported that connection issues are now resolved. However, Rockstar now seems to be investigating some possible progression losses, saves, items and characters that occurred along with the connection problems. PNY Launches HP v231w “Goat” Flash Drive

PNY Technologies has officially announced the limited edition HP v231w USB flash drive to coincide with the Chinese New Year. What 2015, the Year of the Goat, will do for Goat Simulator, I do not know. But what I do know is that PNY has released this specially designed flash drive crafted with gold housing and finished with electronic plated durable metallic casing makes HP v231w a unique and high-quality flash drive.

The USB 2.0 drive doesn’t just carry your files, it also kinda protects them with the durable casing that is both water and dust-proof. There should be a right fit for everyone with capacities ranging from 16 to 64GB.

The 4.5 gram light HP v231w measures 4.5 x 12.2 x 34.6 mm and will be released as a limited edition that is HP compatible and branded. Support is listed for Windows 2000/ XP / Vista, 7, 8, Mac OS: 10.3 and above, but I can not see why anything with USB port shouldn’t be able to use it. Apple Sent out Invites for October 16 Event

It’s official, Apple has sent out invites to members of press for a special event at the Apple campus in Cupertino on October 16th. So that is the first of the many rumours confirmed, the date. As usual Apple didn’t reveal much in their invite and it doesn’t really say much of anything. “It’s been way to long” is the only message we get.

The rumours so far tell us that Apple will present the new 27-inch iMac with 5k Retina display as well as the new iPad Air 2. There have also been talk about a new iPad mini, but so far we haven’t heard much more than the name mentioned.

The new OS X Yosemite was first shown during Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference this summers and is scheduled for release this fall. It’s only a fair assumption that it will get its final presentation during the event and a public release shortly after.

Apple has also pledged to introduce Apple Pay for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus this month and this could happen at this event as well. The NFC-based secure mobile payment service has also been rumoured for the new iPad Air 2, so it all kinda fits together.

For some time there were rumours about a new Mac Book Air with high-resolution Retina display being presented at this event. The latest leaks however point in the direction that the new Apple laptop has been postponed until Q1 2015.

So all in all, we have a lot of leaks, a lot of speculations and a date. One thing we can count on is, the closer we get to the event, the more leaks and information will become available.

Synology DS214Se ‘Special Edition’ 2-bay NAS Review

Introduction


Synology have been hot on the market recently with the release of the DS414 4-bay NAS – the latest revision to their popular 4-bay desktop range as it replaces the top-selling DS413. One of the main focus points of the DS414 is the price point for a pretty good level of performance. As we saw it may not be the fastest 4-bay system available, but when it’s priced considerably lower (>£100) than some of its rival units, it’s a bit of a no-brainer for anyone who is focussing more on raw capacity over performance.

Keeping on the same line, every NAS vendor has a few budget units in their product catalogue, however Synology have a more equal distribution across their range in the terms of performance and cost. As a brand Synology are not afraid to advertise that they build cheaper systems that offer lower performance figures and there is a good reason for this. When you take into account the overall cost of a typical 2 or 4-bay system with the cost of hard drives on top can easily tip over the £500 mark (or more if you go far a higher performance system); that price tag for some people does equate to a substantial chunk of money. For a number of users, the cost is simply too much to churn out. Typically those fighting the battle of cost is the home user, especially with today’s credit crunch here in the UK – where the cost of living when marked against your income is a bit out of proportion. As a result the goal is to get as much raw capacity as possible and for as little as possible.

As we’ve seen before, Synology use a simple naming system for their products, and those ending with a ‘j’ are built with capacity over performance in mind. To take things a step further, Synology have now re-written the rule book as they create a 2-bay system that is more budget conscious than ever. Bring forth the DS214Se. In the same way that the DS414 is the successor the DS413, the DS214 is the new model to the DS213 and the Se (Special Edition) marking puts this model in a position where it is even more budget friendly than before.

With the aim of the game keeping the overall purchase cost down, Synology have removed a number of features from the DS214 specification and have been more ruthless than ever. As a result, the DS214Se is going to be ideal for anyone who is a) on a very tight and b) not needing to run multiple features at the same time.

Whilst the systems specification has been cut down, the bundled extras include everything that you’ll ever need. Alongside the NAS, there is an AC power adaptor, Ethernet cable, a quick installation guide, warranty leaflet, and finally two sets of screws for fitting the drives and for holding the enclosure together.

Possible New QWERTY Nokia Phone

Nokia informed us today on their blog that they have an announcement for us! Though we can’t tell exactly what it is in the photo above, to me it appears to be a cell phone with a QWERTY style keyboard.  Lucky for us we wont have to wait long to find out what they have in store for us!

On Wednesday morning 7 A.M. GMT (8 A.M. UK Time) Nokia will be showing us a new product. Since they will be having Neil Broadly from the Nokia Mobile Phones team showing off the new product we can naturally assume that it will be a new cellular phone. Based on the time that they will be giving the announcement it will most likely be a European released phone. After the announcement there will be a special Q&A session with Broadly and a unannounced “Special Guest”. Would CEO Stephen Elop show up for such an event?

Only showing us the edges of what appears to be a bright yellow chassis for a cellular phone, we are only able to speculate what this device will have in store for us, and with Nokia’s track record, we can only expect the very best. How indestructible can they make a smart phone though?

With such short notice this new device most likely wont be a high-end product, though we can always hope! We were only able to get a date, time, and a small image, not a name, a product type, or anything else, so everything is left up to the mind to try to fit the pieces of the puzzle together.
