SilverStone EP03 USB 3.0 Charging Hub with Display Review

Introduction

USB hubs are nothing new and an essential tool for port multiplying which allows you to connect more devices to your system than you have ports available. This is particularly useful for mobile systems that come with very few ports on their own, but a stationary system can benefit equally from a good USB hub. In today’s review, I am taking a closer look at SilverStone’s EP03 USB 3.0 hub with built-in supercharger function and an integrated display for monitoring voltage and current on all ports.

At heart, SilverStone’s EP03 is a 4-port USB 3.0 hub capable of 5 Gbps transfer speeds. It is naturally also compatible with both USB 2.0 and 1.1 devices on both the host port and the individual connectors. That in itself is nothing new, but everything else is. In fact, this is a pretty smart hub.

When you pick the EP03 hub up and hold it in your hands, you have no doubt that this is a quality built hub. It feels sturdy and it also looks pretty good with its simple plastic case and top plate made of brushed aluminium.

The top is also what instantly reveals one of the features that make this USB hub unique, the built-in display. You can watch the current and voltage in real-time on the display for each of the four ports. Port selection is handled by the small button next to the display which lets you cycle the four ports.

As the display already indicates, this isn’t just a USB hub for peripheral and drive connection, it is also an intelligent charging station that can satisfy users’ increasing demand for fast charging of power-hungry mobile devices. It can deliver 2A to each of the four ports simultaneously and is fully compliant with the USB power delivery specifications 1.2 (BC 1.2).

In addition, the built-in protection mechanism ensures the EP03 can deliver power evenly and safely according to the number or the state of battery charge of connected devices. All these features can also be used to check if a new/replacement charging cable is up to the task and comes with the proper specifications compared to your original cable.

The SilverStone EP03 comes with an AC adapter included which both ensures that you have enough current to all ports, but also allows you to use it as charging station with the use of a host system. It comes with built-in over current and over voltage protections too, so all your connected devices should be safe.

The hub is built around a Genesys Logic GL3522 chipset which actually is a USB 3.1 Gen 1 controller, but that just leaves internal headroom and ensures the best possible connection.

Feature Highlights

  • Integrated display for monitoring voltage and current
  • Supports current up to 2A for each USB port
  • Provides four 5Gbps Super Speed USB 3.0 USB ports
  • High quality brushed aluminum design
  • Supports over voltage and over current protection
  • Includes AC adapter for stable power delivery
  • Compliant with USB power delivery specification 1.2

Package and Accessories

SilverStone always has some great looking packages for their devices and it’s no different for this USB 3.0 hub with fast charging and power meter. It presents itself colourful to the user and begs to be taken home. I know I wouldn’t walk past it.

The rear of the box explains the features in multiple languages.

One of the sides has more details on the product itself in the form of images and text.

And the other side has all the detailed specifications. Overall, a box that tells us everything there is to know about the product inside.

Inside the box, we find a USB 3.0 cable, an AC/DC power adapter, a user guide, and the USB hub itself.

SilverStone Releases ECU03 USB 3.1 Expansion Card

USB 3.1 is the newest generation and it brings quite a few improvements over the previous generation, such as the double bandwidth capabilities. The trouble with new generations of connectors is that you’ll also need to upgrade your system to use them, at least if you got an older one. Luckily you don’t need to upgrade your entire system, you can just use an expansion card. SilverStone just released the ECU03 which is such a card and it will give your system both a USB 3.1 Type A and a USB 3.1 Type C connector.

The SilverStone ECU03 offers 10 Gbps bandwidth for excellent throughput and transfer rates, especially when multiple external drives are attached simultaneously and otherwise would create bottlenecks. The ECU03 fully supports the eXtensible Host Controller Interface (XHCI) that makes it driverless for an easy installation. The expansion card also supports the USB Attached SCSI Protocol (UASP) that increases the overall throughput by handling multiple requests at the same time.

USB is by definition highly compatible and the card is naturally backward compatible with USB 3.0, 2.0, and 1.1 devices. Motherboard support is secured through the use of a PCI-Express Gen2 x2 interface that most stationary PCs will have available for use. Even small form factor (SFF) systems are supported as the card is designed to be low-profile. SilverStone also includes a low-profile expansion slot bracket with the card right out of the box.

Special Features

  • Includes SuperSpeed USB 3.1 external USB Type-C connector
  • SuperSpeed USB 3.1 with Type A and Type C ports
  • PCI-E Gen2.0 x2, throughput up to 10Gbps
  • Compliant with eXtensible Host Controller Interface (XHCI) specification Revision 1.1
  • Compliant with USB Attached SCSI Protocol Revision 1.0 (UASP)
  • Includes optional low-profile slot cover for supporting low profile cases

SilverStone ES01 PCI-E Remote PC Switch Kit

Introduction

There are many forms of being lazy, or maybe we should rather call it an extra comfort feature that expands your abilities. Today I’m taking a closer look at SilverStone’s ES01 expansion card which allows you turn your PC on and off as well as reset it remotely. This can either be used as an extra security feature or as a simple addition to the already existing methods. The ES01 is available as both a PCI and a PCI-Express card, so you can make it work in almost any system. I’ll be taking a closer look at the PCI-Express x1 version today.

SilverStone’s ES01 is a convenient remote switch kit designed to wirelessly turn your computer on or off as well as reset it. The adapter comes with an included Y-cable which ensures that your computer case’s own power and reset buttons can be used concurrently with the ES01. You normally wouldn’t want to rely purely on a remote for such a crucial function, and you don’t need to. However, at the same time the ES01 it can be used without connecting the Y-cable to the chassis buttons in order to add another level of security besides BIOS passwords and software solutions to which the ES01 can be a good alternative. It will mostly be users with computers located in hard to reach areas or systems with special usage scenarios that will find the ES01 remote switch kit to be very handy, but it is up to you how you’d like to use it.

The expansion card in itself is a low profile card and it isn’t very long either. It will easily fit into even the smallest chassis and comes with an included low-profile bracket too. All it takes is two screws to switch from the normal to the low-profile bracket, so that’s a job quickly done if needed.

The remote control uses a common CR2025 Lithium manganese button battery with a 3V voltage. It has a maximum measured EIRP of 3.76dBm and naturally operates on the 2.4GHz band. It is about the size that you would know from your car key with remote functionality, but weighs far less. It also comes with a convenient ring for attachment to key rings, backpacks, purses, and more.

SilverStone TS11-C USB 3.1 Docking Station Review

Introduction

We have tested quite a few of SilverStone’s storage solutions in the past and while the new TS11-C external hard drive docking station might look like previous models, it is special as it comes with the newest technologies. In the past, we have been limited by the USB 3.0 protocol and its maximum 5Gbps transfer speeds even though we connect a 6Gbps capable drive to the docking station. SilverStone’s new TS11-C should make up for this as it uses the USB 3.1 connector for a transfer speed of up to 10Gbps.

SilverStone’s TS11-C is an external hard drive docking station that is made to accommodate either a 2.5-inch or a 3.5-inch drive at speeds up to 10Gb/s with its USB 3.1 Gen2 capability and it also features the new Type-C connector. Since USB is plug and play, as long as you have your USB drivers installed, which also means that this docking station is plug and play. You don’t need any additional drivers to get going, just plug it in, add a drive and turn it on. It is almost a given with a docking station like this, but it’s still worth highlighting that the TS11-C supports USB Attached SCSI protocol (UASP) which allows much better transfer rates in systems that support this compared to those who don’t.

The body itself is gold coloured and made of aluminium. This aids the passive unit itself to stay cool, but it also helps the inserted drive to dispose of its heat. This isn’t as much an issue when used with solid state drives, but mechanical drives need quite a bit of cooling. The cover itself is made of plastic to prevent your drives from being scratched. The top slot cover is a two-piece item that automatically folds back as you insert a drive. The small gap for 2.5-inch drives also helps with the positioning on top of the connector.

The docking station is built around an ASMedia ASM1351 chipset that provides this unit with its USB 3.1 Gen2 capability with speeds up to 10Gbps through the Type-C connector. The included USB cable uses a normal type USB connector which also makes it easy backward compatible with USB 3.0, 2.0 and 1.1. The internal SATA3 interface is also backward compatible with SATA2 and SATA1 drives, as it should be.

With an external device like this that is highly portable, you might want to take it on the road with you too in order to connect extra storage to your mobile devices such as laptops and modern smartphones. SilverStone thought of this too and added a power adapter with exchangeable plugs to be used in pretty much every place on earth no matter what plug type or voltage available.

Feature Highlights

  • USB 3.1 type-C connector with Gen2 up to 10Gb/s super speed transfer rate
  • Supports UASP (USB Attached SCSI Protocol) function for even faster performance
  • Aluminum body with tool-free and tray-less design
  • Supports all 2.5 and 3.5-inch SATA drives up to any capacity
  • Plug & play with support for hot-swapping
  • Multinational adapter socket included

Specifications

The specifications are taken directly from the manufacturers information and might as such be subject to changes in possible future revisions of the product.

Package and Accessories

The box uses the same gold colour as the device and is overall a great looking product packaging. The front shows how the docking station looks and tells you what it is.

The rear of the box contains the specifications and a few more details about the docking station and what drives it can take.

Inside the box, we find a USB 3.1 Type-C to Type-A connector, a user manual, and the multi-regional power adapter next to the docking station itself.

SilverStone MMS01 Military-Grade USB 3.0 Enclosure Review

Introduction

If you are living an active lifestyle and still want to carry around your storage while keeping it protected the best way possible, then you need something other than a normal portable storage device. There are many rugged portable drives on the market by now and we’ve had a look at several of them already. But what if you already have a drive and want to turn that into a safe portable storage drive? Then you need something like SilverStone’s MMS01 military-grade USB 3.0 portable enclosure. Today I’m taking a closer look at how this works and how well it works.

SilverStone’s MMS01 is a thick protective enclosure that has been IP65 certified which makes it dust proof and water-resistant. The enclosure doesn’t stop there, it has been tested and proven to be immune or resistant to rapid temperature change, vibration, 1.2-meter drop, salt spray, sand, and fungal growth. You shouldn’t fully submerge a setup like this, but other than that your data’s drive is well secured.

Durability doesn’t mean that we need to sacrifice performance and the MMS01 is bound to show us some great numbers. Powered by the USB 3.0 bus and with UASP support, the only limitation is the 5 Gbps of the USB bus. The enclosure is equipped with a USB 3.0 type B port and the drive is backward compatible with USB 2.0 and 1.1. Thanks to the USB interface, we don’t require any extra drivers or anything and it will work as plug-and-play with both Windows and Mac OS systems.

Inside the enclosure there is room for a drive with a height of up to 9.5mm, allowing you to mount most 2.5-inch hard disk drives. Solid state drives with the thinner 7mm height aren’t a problem either and that is what I’ll be using in my tests today.

With a weight of just 280 gram, the MMS01 is a lightweight unit despite its great protection. This is an important factor when we deal with mobile drives as no one wants to carry unnecessary weight with them. If you are looking for an enclosure that can protect your drive in the harshest environment possible, the MMS01 might be the one to get.

Feature Highlights

  • Super speed USB 3.0 and SATA 6G interface
  • Supports 7mm or 9.5mm thick 2.5” SATA hard drives or SSD
  • Supports UASP (USB Attached SCSI Protocol) for additional performance
  • Unique anti-vibration silicone sleeve over ABS shell for complete protection
  • Adheres to US military standard (MIL-STD-810G) for thermal, drop, shock, humidity, sand, dust, and fungus resistance
  • Certified IP65 for dustproof and water resistance

Specifications

The specifications are taken directly from the manufacturers information and might as such be subject to changes in possible future revisions of the product.

Package and Accessories

The colour scheme on the package fits the military theme originating from the certifications and presents the enclosure well. The front has all the vital features presented for a quick and easy view.

The rear of the package contains more details information about the specifications and a multilanguage description.

Next to the enclosure itself, we find a USB cable, an Allen key to take the enclosure apart and mount the drive as well as a manual inside the package.

SilverStone Strider Platinum ST55F-PT 550W Power Supply Review

Introduction & Packaging

Silverstone is one of the biggest PC component manufacturers in the world. Every year they launch a colossal amount of products that span a huge range of hardware and usage scenarios. They’ve got an ever-growing range of connectors, cables, fans, filters, I/O devices, chassis, coolers and more. Of course, the one that’s most important to us today is that they also make some of the industries best PSU hardware. Their new Strider Platinum ST55F-PT 550W really caught our interest, as not only does it pack 550W of power, it also has 80 Plus Platinum efficiency, fully module cables, high-quality components, and a hybrid/passive cooling feature, but it’s also incredibly compact for a PSU with these hardware specifications, making it a promising solution for compact system builds.

“As desktop computers continue to advance toward ever more efficient and smaller designs, SilverStone is helping to drive the efficiency movement by releasing the Strider Platinum series of power supplies. Created to be the smallest fully modular ATX power supplies with 80 PLUS Platinum efficiency, they are also incredibly quiet with the ability to run in fanless mode. If the loading condition is below 20%, the fan in the power supply can remain off for silent operation during idle or low powered computing activities. Other great features inherited from previous Strider series include ±3% regulation, powerful single +12V rail, 24/7 continuous power output, and multiple PCI-E cables. For those looking to build highly efficient systems in small footprints, the Strider Platinum is definitely the best choice.”

With a depth of just 140mm, this PSU should be extremely compatible with a very large selection of chassis products, including many of the very ergonomic chassis which Silverstone produce. With high-quality components that add excellent efficiency, voltage regulation and 24/7 operation, we have high expectation of what this PSU can do.

  • Compact design with a depth of 140mm for easy integration
  • High efficiency with 80 PLUS Platinum certification
  • 100% modular cables
  • 24/7 continuous power output with 40℃ operating temperature
  • Class-leading single +12V rail
  • Strict ±3% voltage regulation and low ripple & noise
  • Ultra silent 120mm fan with intelligent semi-fanless operation

All the usual security features are here, as well as a good range of connectors, a good quality fan and more. So let’s jump in and take a closer look at what it has to offer.

The packaging is nicely designed, with all the main hardware specifications detailed on the box, as well as the quote “world’s smallest 80 Plus Platinum full-modular ATX power supplies.”

Around the back, more technical performance data that most people are likely to ever read, but it’s nice that Silverstone are catering to those who understand it all.

In the box, you’ll find the mains power cable, some velcro cable ties, some plastic cable ties, the mounting screws, as well as an in-depth user manual.

SilverStone Releases USB 3.1 Type-C LAN and HDMI Adapters

One of the downsides with compact mobile devices such as two-in-one, ultrabooks, and tablets is the lack of connection ability. They all have a USB connection, but beyond that, it is very limited. Luckily you can do a lot with adapters and SilverStone just released two new USB 3.1 Type-C adapters where the one adds a Gigabit Ethernet RJ45 network port and the other adds an HDMI port that’s capable of 4K video output.

The first of the two new SilverStone USB 3.1 Type-C adapters is the EP05 and it is a compact Gigabit Ethernet network adapter in beautiful all white colored design. The adapter uses the Realtek RTL8153 chipset which offers TCP Offload Engine and it also supports advanced IEEE features such as 802.1Q VLAN tagging and 802.3az among others. The Realtek chipset offers both normal Wake On LAN (WOL) as well as RealWoW that allows you to wake your system over the internet too.

The EP05 would be a great addition to notebook computers such as MacBooks that do not have network port at all on their own. Naturally it is downwards compatible all the way to 10Mbps and USB 1.1 connections and it works driverless on Windows 8 or newer systems. Windows 7 and earlier will need to download and install drivers first.

The second new SilverStone USB 3.1 Type-C adapter is called the EP07 and it provides you with an easy way to add an extra HDMI port to your system. The SilverStone EP07 doesn’t just support USB 3.1 input and HDMI output, it also supports flexible USB 3.1 Type-C switching for DP 1.2 Alt Mode.

The EP07 Supports HDMI 1.4 and also former versions for older devices, but sadly no official HDMI 2.0 support. That doesn’t mean that you can’t connect a HDMI 2.0 display to it, you just don’t get the advantages. It supports content protection of HDCP Rx and Tx keys and it can display resolution up to 3840 x 2160 pixels at 30Hz with DP1.2 in SST mode.

Both SilverStone adapters work without extra power input which makes them highly portable. They don’t weigh much either, which always is a great feature in accessories for mobile devices.

Both the SilverStone EP05 and EP07 adapter will be available next week for a recommended end user price of $18.15 USD for the EP05 and $22.11 USD for the EP07 (excl. VAT).

SilverStone Releases Compact Titanium Certified PSUs

The power supply is one of the parts of your system where you never should cheap out as it’s the backbone of your system that supplies anything with power. SilverStone now released three new models in the Strider Titanium series, the ST60F-TI, ST70F-TI, and ST80F-TI, that not only come with great specs and impressive titanium certification, they are also very compact and fully modular at the same time.

The new Strider power supplies meet the strict 80 PLUS Titanium efficiency rating where they have to stay above 90% efficiency, even at very low load conditions. This is a tricky thing to achieve and that is why we mostly have seen large units with this certification. SilverStone cracked this and are now offering these ratings for the Strider 600W, 700W, and 800W power supply units in a compact size.

The new units are only 150mm deep and at the same time they come with a fully modular cable system. This allows for the usage in any ATX compatible case with ease and it also allows you to make a great cable management. Speaking of cables, the new Strider units come with flat cables that should make the overall cable routing easier. They have better flexibility and allow for tighter folding.

SilverStone’s ST60F-TI, ST70F-TI, and ST80F-TI are built around a single +12B rail design which allows it to deliver the best possible power to all connected components. It has a ±3% regulation and low ripple & noise performance for high stability. The PSUs are built with all Japanese capacitors and rated for 24/7 continuous power output. Overall, some amazing looking power supplies.

These world’s smallest fully modular ATX power supplies with 80 PLUS Titanium efficiency will be available starting next week for an MSRP of $161.70 USD for the ST60F-TI, $178.75 USD for the ST70F-TI and 195.80 USD for the ST80F-TI.

SilverStone Releases Nitrogon NT09-115X Slim-Profile CPU Cooler

There are many obstacles one need to take into consideration when building small form factor builds and one of them is the CPU cooler. It needs to be powerful enough to cool your system, but most importantly, it needs to fit into the chassis. SilverStone released a new CPU cooler that should solve both of these issues and it is called the Nitrogon NT09-115X.

The Nitrogon NT09-115X is only 45mm tall and made for Intel’s LGA 115x sockets. It is compatible with all four of them, LGA 1156, 1155, 1150, and 1151, and it can handle processors with a TDP of up to 65W.

The NT09-115X has been designed especially for use in space limited applications and comes with extruded aluminum fins for excellent thermal conductive. In addition, the NT09-115X is equipped with a custom PWM 92mm silent fan that is staggered against the aluminum fins for better airflow focus and enhanced heat dissipation.

The 92mm fan has a variable speed from 550 to 2500 RPM in order to generate an air pressure of 0.136 to 2.8mm H2O and an airflow of 10.34 to 47.0 CFM. In return, the cooler will generate a noise level between 18.5 and 32 dBA which isn’t bad at all for a small form factor cooler. From inaudible to slightly audible, yet with a good cooling performance.

Both the core and the extruded fins are made of aluminium which makes for a very light CPU cooler that shouldn’t put much stress on your motherboard, no matter how weak it might be. The entire CPU cooler with fan only weights 213.5 grams. Despite the low weight, SilverStone still ships the NT09-115X with a reinforced backplate to lessen the stress on the motherboard even more.

Special Features:

  • Supports Intel LGA1156/1155/1150/1151 processors
  • Designed for low profile systems at only 45mm tall
  • Custom quiet 92mm fan for excellent cooling and low noise
  • Extruded aluminum fins for good heat dissipation
  • Reinforced back plate design reduces motherboard bending to provide tighter CPU contact

The new Nitrogon NT09-115X is available from today for a recommended end-user price of $13.75 USD.

The low-profile design also makes sure that it’ll fit almost any chassis and setup.

The SilverStone ECU04 is a PCI-Express card that will add an internal USB 3.1 19-pin header to your system, allowing you to get speeds up to 10 Gbps. The card is compliant with both the eXtensible Host Controller Interface (XHCI) specification Revision 1.1 and the USB Attached SCSI Protocol (UASP) Revision 1.0 to give you maximum compatibility and performance. The ECU04 also comes with a low-profile slot cover for usage in SFF builds. The extra power requirements to the card will be provided through the normal SATA power connector on the card.

Thanks to the XHCI support, you won’t need any drivers for the ECU04 on operating systems that support this, and most do. Windows 7 users will need to install the provided drivers, but everyone else should have a plug and play experience.

The ECS03 comes with an MSRP of 40.15 USD and the ECU04 has an MSRP of 29.59 USD. Both cards should be available now. Does your system have enough of these ports or are you tempted by either of these new cards. Let us know in the comments.

SilverStone Releases ES01 Remote PC Switch Kit

Have you ever wished to turn your computer on and off from afar, much in the same way that you do when you unlock your car with your remote key? Well you can’t have been the only one as SilverStone just released the ES01 that is just that. The SilverStone ES01 is a remote switch for your PC that allows you to turn it on and off from a distance of up to 20 meters.

The SilverStone ES01 is a 2.4GHz wireless computer power and reset remote switch and that in itself says most. The receiver is in the form of a PCI-Express card and SilverStone included both a normal and a low-profile expansion cover. While the PCI-Express bus is the normal connector these days, in the past it was the previous PCI slot that dominated the machines. SilverStone also released a normal PCI version, so make sure you get the right one for your system. This in return means that you should be able to use this card and remote control for pretty much any system you wish, new or old and small or big.

The included Y-cable for the power and reset buttons make sure that you don’t have to rely solely on this remote control and can continue to use your normal case buttons as you did before you installed this card.

As previously mentioned, the SilverSTone ES01 has a range of up to 20 meters and the interference should be minimal on this band, but objects that are in the way will effect the range. The ES01 has an Effective Isotropic Radiated Power (EIRP) of 2.76 dBm and the remote runs on a nomral CR2025 button battery.

The new SilverStone ES01 (SST-ES01-PCIe / SST-ES01-PCI) will be available around the world during this week and can be yours for a suggested end-user price of $14.96 USD

SilverStone Releases Argon AR07 and AR08 CPU Coolers

SilverStone is ready with two new CPU coolers that should provide users with a great balance between silent operation and performance. The two new CPU coolers from the Argon series are called the AR07 and AR08 and they have close to the same features and specifications. There is only one difference between the two CPU coolers and that is the size. The Argon AR07 is a 140mm sized version while the AR08 is a little smaller with its 92mm width and fan size.

The Argon series of CPU coolers are designed to provide a great cooling solution for your CPU with their three 8mm thick copper heat pipes that are connected to the base using heat-pipe direct contact (HDC) technology. SilverStone also added unique and exclusive heatsink fin designs such as interweaving diamond edge and arrow guides that should help with the airflow and thereby performance.

The new fans used provide an even better airflow to noise ratio than predecessors and the Argo AR08 and Argos AR08 can quickly and quietly push the pesky heat away from your CPU and the surrounding motherboard area. The blue colour of fans might not be to everyone’s best liking, but the specifications look great.

The SilverStone Argos product pages didn’t reveal any rated TDP and neither did the press release about the new products, but since they are compatible with Intel Socket LGA775/115X/1366/2011/2011-V3 and AMD Socket AM2/AM3/FM1/FM2, they should be able to handle most. The Argos 07 has an airflow of 31.4 to 93.0 CFM at a fan speed of 800 to 1500 RPM. The Argos 08 has an airflow of 26.8 to 49.5 CFM at a fan speed of 1500 to 2800 RPM. SilverStone PTS01 USB 3.0 Enclosure for NUC Review

Introduction

Intel’s NUC series of mini PCs as well as SilverStone’s lineup of Petit series are amazing and bring a lot of great hardware in a very tiny box. They do however have one problem for some people and that is the lack of storage upgradeability. A few of the NUCs have a 2.5-inch bay, but most only feature mSATA, M.2, and similar next generation form factors. That sets some limitations, but limitations are meant to be broken and SilverStone did that with their PTS01 external USB 3.0 storage enclosure that fits the NUC and Petit cases like a glove.

SilverStone designed the PTS01 specifically for the Intel NUC as the majority of the NUC motherboards only support mSATA in order to reduce the dimensions. Where basic and small is great for the one, the other wants a little more. The PTS01 easily stacks with the NUC and Petit series chassis and it can even be placed between the NUCs and their mounting positions such as behind monitors. That way you don’t increase the footprint of your system, at least if you got a little more space behind your monitor.

You can mount a 2.5-inch hard disk or solid state drive with a maximum height of 9mm in the SilverStone PTS01. It is fully SATA III and USB 3.0 compatible with backward compatibility on both sectors. This could truly be the perfect and most convenient way to expand the storage of your NUC system.

The PTS01 is made from aluminum and steel which makes it sturdy and also helps with the cooling of the drive you mount inside. The tiny chassis measures just 122mm by 108mm by 15mm and it weighs just 125-gram thanks to the choice of material.

The SilverStone PTS01 storage enclosure is very simple on its own as it’s just a two-piece enclosure held together by eight screws and containing a small PCB at one end. On the PCB, you can see the USB 3.0 port and the activity LED to the right and we also spot the ASMedia ASM1153E USB 3.0 to Serial SATA bridge chip. The ASM1153E supports UASP for even better transfer speeds and a larger command queue. The enclosure did however not register as UASP device on my Windows 8 Pro system.

Feature Highlights

  • SuperSpeed USB 3.0 with 5Gbps
  • Supports Intel NUC cases
  • Supports SATA3 2.5” SSD/HDD x 1
  • Robust aluminum and steel body construction

Specifications

Package and Accessories

The simple black box has a premium feel over it thanks to the full-colour print, although you probably won’t look much at the box after you unpacked the enclosure. It also showcases the product itself and the main features right on the front.

The rear of the box has all the specifications themselves and a small image showcasing the usage directly connected to a Petit case.

Inside the box you find the enclosure itself along with a USB connection cable and all the screws you need to mount a drive inside as well as mount it to the NUC or Petit chassis.

SilverStone Releases TS11-C USB 3.1 Docking Station

SilverStone has quite a few external docking solutions for both SSDs and HDDs, but they newest of them that’s just been released is the fastest of them all. This is at least the case when we exclude the external RAID solutions. The new external docking station from SilverStone is called the TS11-C (SST-TS11G-C) and it comes with a USB 3.1 Type-C Gen2 connector with up to 10Gb/s super speed transfer rates.

Besides the connection options, the TS11-C is a pretty ordinary desktop styled docking station for hard disk drives and solid state drives. It can take SATA drives with a 2.5-inch form factor of any height as well as 3.5-inch drives. Just plug them in from the top and turn the docking station on. The docking station supports plug-and-play as well as hot-swapping of the drives for even easier usage.

The body of the TS11-C itself is made of aluminium while the top cover is made of plastic-ABS. The top is black while the rest of the unit has been gold coloured. A fitting colour for a premium docking station like the TS11-C is. While it comes with the newest standards in both USB and SATA, it is backwards compatible on both to previous generations. The operating system support is specified to Windows 7, Windows 8/8.1, Windows 10, and future releases of Mac OS 10.5 or above.

SilverStone made sure to use a controller chip, the ASM1351, that supports UASP (USB Attached SCSI Protocol) for the fastest possible transfer speeds and prevent bottlenecks on the USB connection.

A 2.5-inch SSD will easily get enough power through a USB connection, but a 3.5-inch hard disk drive will draw too much power. For this, the TS11-C comes with a 12V DC adapter and it also has a very convenient power button that allows you to have it connected all the time without actually using it.

SilverStone’s new TS11-C will be available on January the 28th for a recommended end user price of $53.35 USD (excl. VAT). We will also have a review ready for you on just this docking station very soon, so stay tuned for more.

Silverstone Tundra TD02-Slim AIO Cooler Review

Introduction

The design team at Silverstone are the masters of ergonomics, something we’ve seen time and time again with their revolutionary space-saving chassis designs. Not only have they created some masterful chassis, but they also have a great range of cooling products that are perfectly designed for tighter spaces, such as slim fans, low-profile air coolers and slim AIO radiators. Today, we’ll be taking a look at the Tundra TD02-Slim, a 240mm AIO water cooler with a total thickness of just 37mm, with the fans installed! This is going to be a great cooler for mini-ITX and Micro-ATX chassis designs where space is at a premium.

“Due to limited room in smaller cases, small form factor users are often left out of liquid cooling option, so SilverStone has released the Tundra TD02-Slim. Designed for small form factor PCs, this cooler has a radiator and fan combo of only 37mm thick, making it possible to fit into slimmer profile cases or giving more space in tight confines. By retaining many of the high-end features from SilverStone’s other liquid cooling models, the TD02-Slim also has great performance for the money and is a top choice for high performance but small PC builds.”

The cooler is well equipped, with a copper base plate, a 22mm aluminium radiator, high-performance pump, and two 15mm thick PWM fans. Of course, the cooler also comes with support for a massive range of socket types, ensuring compatibility with any modern system.

The packaging shows off a nice image of the cooler, as well as a quick rundown of the main spec, such as the slim form factor and the extensive socket support.

Around the back, much of the same information, just broken down into various international languages.

Virtually everything you need is included, such as a universal backplate, as well as a Y-split fan cable and a Molex adaptor should you not have any available fan headers on your motherboard.

The included fans look really nice, with a contrasting black and white theme. They’re obviously super slim, but with a large number of fins, they’re still going to be able to shift some serious airflow. The only minor gripe is the colour of the fan cables, but it’s hardly a deal breaker.

SilverStone Wireless Upgrade Roundup Review

Introduction

It is one thing to buy a wireless network card and set it up, but a lot of the time you can improve the performance of these cards with a few aftermarket items. Today I’m taking a little look at some of the upgrade offering that SilverStone offers, the WAB1B Magnetic WiFi antenna base, the WAD17 7 dBi high-gain antenna, and the 9 dBi WA219 high-gain antenna.

An antenna base can help you with two things: Move the antennas to a more open space where it’s less crowded than behind your PC with all the add-in cards and cables running there. The second bonus is that you can move the antennas to a place where they will get a better reception than they would behind your chassis that’s possibly located under your desk. SilverStone’s WAB1B antenna base is also magnetic which allows you to place it on the side of things, such as your PC chassis if it is made of metal. This increases the placement options even further. To finalize the whole thing, SilverStone added gold-plated connectors at both ends to ensure the best possible signal transfer.

The included antennas might not be total to your liking when you buy a network card, for one reason or another. The most common reason to get aftermarket antennas is the higher performance that they offer over the mainstream and included antennas. Antennas with higher gain also come with an increased size as you can see on the photo below. The smallest antenna is the default antenna included with SilverStone’s ECWA1 PCIe card and the other two are the WAD17 and WA219 respectively.

The WAD17 is a dual-band antenna for use with both the 2.4GHz and the 5GHz band while the WA219 only is a single-band antenna for use with the 2.4GHz band. Both have their usage scenarios, so which you pick comes down to what you need. The long WA219 has a performance of 9dBi while the WAD217 has a performance of 7dBi, both quite a bit better than default 5dBi antennas, or worse.

Silverstone Raven RVX01 Mid-Tower Chassis Review

Introduction

The Silverstone Raven series has long been established as one of the most-unique chassis ranges on the market, offering a range of products that suit slim Mini-ITX system builds, right up to high-end full-tower systems. One thing is for certainly, all of the Raven series chassis to date have been mighty impressive, both in terms of design and functionality and that’s a trend I hope to see continued today.

“After completing the evolutionary RAVEN RV05 with 5.25” drive bay design completely removed, the RAVEN team created another forward thinking line of cases with the introduction of the “RAVEN X” subcategory. This line will not only retain the essence of what made the original RAVEN series great with features such as signature aggressive styling and 90 degree rotated layout, but also cater to enthusiasts looking for more exciting designs in an entry-level price point. With the smallest ever footprint for a ATX RAVEN tower case, the RVX01 has remarkably accommodating interior that can easily fit large ATX motherboards up to 12” x 11”, full size graphics card, four 2.5”/3.5” drives, and spaces for up to three radiators.” – Silverstone

The RVX01 is not only the latest gaming chassis from their Raven series, but it’s also one of the most interesting. Not only is it designed to be more affordable, it’s also the smallest, but with that in mind, it still promises are premium chassis experience and support for some serious high-end hardware. Affordable, well made, good looks and great compatibility… sounds pretty perfect to me!

  • Signature RAVEN styling touches
  • 90 degree motherboard mounting from legendary RAVEN RV01
  • Three 120mm Air Penetrator fans included for sublime vertical air cooling
  • Positive pressure design for excellent cooling/quietness and dust-prevention
  • Quick access filter for convenient maintenance
  • Support up to three sets of liquid cooling radiators

There are three colour options available, red, blue and green. You’ll also find enclosed and windowed panel variants of each also, giving you plenty of variety to choose from overall. There’s room for up to an ATX motherboard, ATX PSU, monster sized 13.7-Inch expansion cards, tall CPU coolers and while there is room for fans, there’s a very impressive trilogy of Silverstones 120mm Air Penetrator fans pre-installed!

The chassis certainly make a visual impact when you first set eyes on it. The panels are coated with a stealthy black, which blends in perfectly with the matte finish black plastics. A mixture of extreme angles give it an aggressive appearance, but it still manages to look fairly refined at the same time.

We obviously have the black and red variant at our disposal today and while we don’t have the window panel (which is a real shame), it would be located here on the right side panel, as this chassis employs a rotated motherboard design.

The front panel keeps that aggressive at full power, with more strong angles and two LED lights mounted in an angular and almost evil eyes fashion.

Tucked into the top of the front panel, a pair of control switches for the power and reset. They’re just made from a cut-away in the plastics, which is a little bit of a cheap way of doing it, but they work and if it saves costs to the consumer, it’s not so bad. There’s an I/O panel with dual USB 3.0 ports and HD audio jacks.

Around the back, you’ll notice a distinct lack of a standard I/O port for the motherboard, as that is located on the top of the chassis. Instead, you’ll find a ventilated section for the PSU air intake.

On the base of the chassis, there’s a lot going on, as we’ve got that lovely bright red trim and four large and durable rubber grips on the feet.

Those big feet provide ample ground clearance for a full-length slide-out dust filter, behind which you’ll find a wall of superb quality Air Penetrator fans. These fans can push a mighty amount of air with minimal noise, which is obviously what you want for a chassis fan!

SilverStone Release MMS01 Military-Grade External 2.5-inch Enclosure with USB 3.0

Rugged hard disk drives that can withstand drops, water, and dust is nothing new on the market, but they’re getting more and more popular as people need more storage despite their active lifestyle. SilverStone has now released a new enclosure called the MMS01 that allows you to create a protective storage solution with any 7mm or 9.5mm thin 2.5-inch drive.

The SilverStone MMS01 is a military-grade external 2.5-inch enclosure with USB 3.0 connectivity. It has a thick protective cover for your drive and has been certified for the IP65 standard against dust and water. But it doesn’t stop there, the MMS01 has also proven to be immune or resistant to rapid temperature change, vibration, 1.2-meter drop, salt spray, sand, and fungal growth.

The SilverStone MMS01 doesn’t sacrifice performance for its MIL-STD-810G and IP65 certifications because it doesn’t have to. Inside is a bridge controller chip that supports UASP for the best possible USB 3.0 connection with improved access times and data transfers.

Feature Highlights

  • Super speed USB 3.0 and SATA 6G interface
  • Supports 7mm or 9.5mm thick 2.5” SATA hard drives or SSD
  • Supports UASP (USB Attached SCSI Protocol) for additional performance
  • Unique anti-vibration silicone sleeve over ABS shell for complete protection
  • Adheres to US military standard (MIL-STD-810G) for thermal, drop, shock, humidity, sand, dust, and fungus resistance
  • Certified IP65 for dust proof and water resistance

SilverStone’s newest drive enclosure, the MMS01, will be available from today for a suggested retail price of just $30.98 USD which isn’t much premium over other enclosures that don’t offer the extra rugged protection.

SilverStone Releases DS222 External Dual-Bay RAID Enclosure

RAID setups are great for speed and redundancy and why should that be limited to your internal drives. SilverStone released a new external USB 3.0 chassis with built-in hardware RAID functionality and space for two 2.5-inch drives. The price and capacity gap between 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch drives have more or less been closed, making 2.5-inch drives a viable option at a highly reduced footprint as well as power consumption.

The new SilverStone DS222 external enclosure supports the use of the two drives as individual drives, BIG mode, RAID 0, and RAID 1 modes. It also comes with some useful features such as an alarm buzzer that can be turned off should you not want it and it also comes with a dedicated power button for the enclosure itself.

SilverStone’s DS222 should be able to get plenty of power for most drives with just the USB 3.0 connection, but SilverStone also added another micro USB port for 5V power supply, making it easily connectable to a system with plenty of power and without the use of an extra power adapter. That makes the setup a lot easier. The DS222 supports plug and play hot swapping and the entire chassis uses a tool-free design for extra convenience.

The new SilverStone DS222 will be available starting December the 18th for a suggested retail price of $62.48.

SilverStone Releases New FS-Series Drive Cages

It can be a troublesome job to find a chassis with enough room for all the drives you might want to add to the build you are making, and this is especially the case when you build server and storage oriented systems. SilverStone is aware of this issue and released a whole list of new drive cages to solve this problem. The new SilverStone drive cages either support plenty of 2.5-inch drives in the FS2xx series or plenty of 3.5-inch drives with the FS3xx series.

Let us start out with the 2.5-inch models where there will be three new drive cages. The first is the FS202 with room for two drives in one 3.5-inch bay, then there is the FS208 with room for eight 2.5-inch drives in two 5.25-inch device bays and finally the impressive FS212 with room for twelve 2.5-inch drives in just three 5.25-inch device bays. The SilverStone FS3xx series can fit either three, four, or five 3.5-inch drives in respectively two, three, and three device bays with the FS303, FS304, and FS305.

All the new FS drive cages are made with an all aluminium body with a beautiful hairline brushed finish. The loading is trayless and screwless and all of them support hot swapping too. They come with adjustable drive status LED and the 5.25-inch device bay models also feature fan control system and built-in cooling fan. For safety, you can lock each drive tray individually to prevent sticky fingers from running away with your drives as well as preventing accidental ejection.

Another added bonus with drive cages as these, besides the easy setup and better cooling, you also require a lot fewer power cables which reduce the overall clutter in your case, improves the airflow, and brings you past the limitations based on available PSU connections.

SilverStone’s new FS drive cages will be available on December the 18th for a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $25 for the FS202, $94.80 for the FS208, $115.80 for the DS212. The DS303 will cost you $62.40, the FS304 $80.60, and the FS305 will cost you $98.00.

SilverStone Releases EP03 Hub with Fast Charging and Power Meter

USB hubs are by definition quite generic, but once in a while a hub comes along that is a little different from the last. We’ve seen USB hubs with LAN combined as well as those with built-in KVM support, but SilverStone’s newest USB hub stays simple in that regards. Instead, the new EP03 comes with high-power charging function on all four ports and a built-in monitoring display that can display the current voltage and the current for each port.

SilverStone’s EP03 smart hub can charge four devices at the same time and supply up to 2A on each port simultaneously thanks the additions of a power supply. The hub naturally also works as a normal four port 5Gbps USB 3.0 hub for splitting up one port for four devices.

The EP03 comes with a beautiful brushed aluminium top plate that gives the hub that extra nice finish. The rest of the hub is made of plastic. It supports over voltage and over current protection to make sure that none of the connected devices will be damaged in case of either.

The new SilverStone EP03 will be available on December the 18th for a recommended end-user price of $33 USD plus VAT.

SilverStone Releases Aftermarket High-Gain Antennas and Magnetic Base

Our routers and wireless network cards come with replaceable antennas, at least a lot do, and SilverStone released two new antennas and one magnetic Wi-Fi antenna base for the scenario that you’ll want to upgrade your existing antennas for performance or placement reasons.

The SilverStone WAD17, pictured above, is a high-gain MIMI 2T2R Wi-Fi antenna for improved wireless connectivity. It has a 5 dBi gain on the 2.4 GHz band and 7 dBi on the 5GHz bands which makes it a dual-band antenna. The Dipole antenna features a default SMA plug RP connector and has an impedance of 50 ohms.

The SilverStone WA219 2T2R high-gain Wi-Fi antenna is only for the 2.4 GHz band but comes with an impressive 9 dBi gain for that extra range and signal strength into the furthest parts of your home.

The SilverStone WAB1B is a circular magnetic base for SMA plug RP antennas and it has a 1.5-meter long cable for optimal placement. It allows you to place the antennas on a more optimal position than let’s say on the rear of your PC chassis which is placed under the desk. Having the antennas on top of the chassis or even the desk itself will greatly improve the Wi-Fi performance. Both the plug on the stand and on the cable are gold plated for optimal connection and the cable used is a low loss CLF 100.

All three new SilverStone Wi-Fi accessories are available now for a recommended end user price (excl. VAT) of $10.08 USD, $8.51 USD, and $8.51 USD respectively for the WA219, WAD17, and WAB1B.

SilverStone Releases Two New SFF-8643 SAS Cables

You might just have bought a new fancy SAS controller for your data systems or maybe even bought a motherboard with it onboard, but you’ll also need some quality cables to connect these controllers with the drives. SilverStone released two new cables for the SFF-8643 Internal Mini SAS connector.

The first one is the CPS04 and it is basic SFF-8643 to SFF-8643 cable, but it is a high-quality cable. The 500mm long cable is made with heavy-duty connectors and a thick cable for stable connections and reliable throughput. The cable supports SAS 3.0 with 12Gbps per lane and the cable features four lanes. The CPS05 also comes with sideband connection feature for optimal backplane control.

The second new cable from SilverStone is the CPS05 and it only has one SFF-8643 connector, the other is populated with 7-pin SATA3 connectors for support with SATA-based drives. The thick shielded cables along with the heavy-duty connectors ensure stability and reliability. The CPS05 also features a sideband connection (SGPIO) and it is designed for always on and reliable operation with servers or workstations.

The recommended End User price (excl. VAT) is set to $24.97 USD for the  CPS04 cable and $21.56 USD for the CPS05 cable. Both cables should be available now.

SilverStone Releases RVP01 Oversized Mousepad

We have all experienced the trouble in hectic games when our mouse exits the surface areas edge and we lose proper control of our beloved input device, the mouse. Silverstone has now released a new surface pad that is large enough for both your keyboard and mouse and thereby gives you an entire gaming surface for your desktop rather than just a mouse pad.

The extra-large pad creates a seamless and consistent gaming area and it features a fine machine woven top surface for smooth movement and precision stitched edges with an excellent durability. The Raven RVP01 oversized pad features a non-slip coating made of eco rubber that makes sure it stays where you place it.

SilverStone Releases PTS01 USB 3.0 Enclosure for NUCs

Small form factor PCs such as the Intel NUC systems are great and they provide an impressive amount of power in a very compact shape. They do however have one issue most of the times and that is when it comes to storage. Most of the NUCs only support mSATA drives which will increase the costs per GB over 2.5-inch sized drives as well as generally limit the available storage options. SilverStone now released a new drive enclosure that will fix that issue by adding almost any 2.5-inch drive to such a system via a USB 3.0 connection.

Now USB 3 drive enclosures aren’t anything new, but SilverStone’s new PTS01 drive enclosure also matches the layout and compatibility of the NUCs or SilverStone Petit Series chassis. The PTS01 is built with aluminium and steel that both helps with the heat dissipation and keep the drive operating at an optimal efficiency. The enclosure has room for one 2.5-inch SSD or HDD with a height up to 9mm and it connects through a micro USB 3.0 type B cable.

The smart design and compatibility also mean that you don’t have to find a new way to place everything just because you expand with a SilverStone PTS01 enclosure. Being compatible with the NUC mounting options, you can simply put it between the NUC and your mounting system such as the backside of your monitor and forget all about the addition except for the increased storage abilities.

The recommended end-user price for SilverStone’s PTS01 is set to $29.20 USD plus tax and it will be available on December 2nd.

SilverStone Release New RVX01 in the Raven Series

SilverStone collected a lot of praise for their Raven series and now the family got a new member, and while it is the ATX-sized Raven with the smallest footprint yet it is not the runt of the litter. The new Raven RVX01 comes in two versions, one with a side panel window and one without. The one without the window is only available in red but you can get the windowed RVX01-W in three colour options: red, blue, and green.

Despite the small footprint, the Raven RVX01 has room for a lot of hardware such as an ATX-sized motherboard and PSU, graphics cards with up to 348mm length, and CPU coolers with a height of up to 162mm (159mm in the windowed version). The cooling options aren’t bad either with three 120mm Air Penetrator fans pre-installed at the bottom of the case, 1200 RPM at 19.7dBA, and the option to mount another 120mm at the front and one at the top.

The Raven RVX01 has seven expansion slots for full usage of your ATX-sized motherboard options and comes with two front-IO USB 3.0 ports as well as two audio jacks for a headset or the last surround sound connections.

The overall measurements come down to 215mm width by 485mm height by 500mm depth and a total volume of 52.1 litres. If you already been convinced that this should be your new chassis then you don’t need to wait that long for it to become available. The Raven RVX01 should be available on December the 2nd for a suggested end-user price of $84.60 USD for the RVX01BR without window and $89.40 USD for the windowed RVX01BR-W with colour options.

The Raven signature features such as a motherboard that has been rotated 90 degrees for a top instead of rear IO panel and hidden cables as well as the stylish looking front, easy access, and positive pressure design.
