UK Company Gives Employees Time Off To Watch Game Of Thrones

So that new TV series has come out, be it the latest season of a show or an entirely new show and you end up at work or school just counting down the minutes hoping that no one spoils the episode for you. Well if you work for +rehabstudios, a UK-based company, you might get to avoid this trouble by giving employees time off to watch the Game of Thrones when it comes out.

Posting to Facebook to share the news, the document which appears to be screenshotted in the post seems to be a contract, with a little extra added in. The exact paragraph reads:

“All +rehabstudio UK staff (London and Belfast offices) will also receive an additional half day (morning) holiday following the first episode for each new season of Game Of Thrones when simulaunched with the US. US staff are reminded not to share spoilers on the intranet until after the show has aired in the UK 24 hours later.”

According to founding partner, Tim Rodgers, the perk’s been very well received, with hundreds of people supporting it while others have gone so far as to ask if it can be transferred to other shows like The Walking Dead, something he replied to with “that’s fine with us too”. Explaining that the company wanted to add an “extra perk” to the handbook, they decided that given the companies link to the show, having started in Belfast where the show is filmed, the company are always welcome to new suggestions for the little extra perk next year.

The Doctor Who Spin-off Class Gets Its Cast And An Unlikely Comparison

Doctor Who is considered a classic British show, with the BBC’s resurrection of the series leading to a whole new generation of Whovians watching the show in eager anticipation. While the series is on hiatus for a year (with people still waiting for the news about the next companion), more details have been announced about the Doctor Who spin-off, Class.

Class is not the first Doctor Who spin-off, with series like Torchwood and the Sarah Jane Adventures exploring the lives of the doctors companions after their interactions with the Doctor. It’s been known for a while that Class will target a younger audience, with the show set in Coal Hill school, a scene that Whovians from the older generation will recognise from back in 1963.

The official teaser for the show starts with a simple description that just makes us wish it was already on our TV’s:

What if your planet was massacred and you were the sole survivor?
What if a legendary figure out of space and time found you a place to hide?
But what if the things that want to kill you have tracked you down?
And worst of all, what if you haven’t studied for your exams…?

With everything from family, friends, school work, and the everyday issues that being a teenager throws at you meeting with interplanetary secrets and dark mysteries the fate of the very world may, in fact, rest with, and end, with a bunch of teenagers.

With newcomers Greg Austin, Fady Elsayed, Sophie Hopkins and Vivian Oparah starring alongside their soon to be teacher played by Katherine Kelly, an actress well-known for her roles in Coronation street and Happy Valley, as they fight to save the world and their grades from aliens.

Does any of this sound familiar? While many may think Power Rangers, executive producer Steven Moffat has a different opinion on what the show could be like. “Class is dark and sexy and right now. I’ve always wondered if there could be a British Buffy – it’s taken the brilliant Patrick Ness to figure out how to make it happen”. That’s right, Steven Moffat himself has compared the show to a “British Buffy”, something that can only be seen as the highest of praise from fans on both Buffy and Doctor Who.

I don’t know about you but I am excited to see how the series comes out, with it airing on BBC Three in the UK and BBC America within the US, we only have to wait on time now.

Go 8 Bit – A Show About Video Games Hosted By Dara O’Briain

Video gaming has come a long way in recent years. Traditionally it was something you did at an arcade, with people playing games for hours after hours trying to beat the top score. The games then came home, with people being able to enjoy their frustration and enjoyment in private, then they went back to being public with streamers and tournaments bringing e-sports to the whole world. Dara O’Briain looks to continue this by bringing some of the games back to your TV screen.

With a few exceptions, shows about video games have rarely taken off. An example of this can be found back in 2003 when BBC Two released the series Time Commanders. Putting people into historic battles using Rome: Total War while military specialists would compare their tactics to the actual tactics used in the battle. People prefer to play games rather than watch them.

These days people prefer to play games rather than watch them, but comedian Dara O’Briain latest show, Go 8 Bit, could change that by giving two teams give rounds to complete against one another. Ranging from classic games like Pac-Man and Pong to more modern games (I doubt we will get to see them play Mortal Kombat) the series could inspire people to watch and even play some classics.

In addition to the video games “larger-than-life game-inspired physical challenges” could be included as part of the show. We are thinking paintballing on CS:GO inspired maps and a few laps the studio in Mario Kart themed boxes.

Would you watch the show? Who would you like to see take part in the competitions?

Website Hopes To Explain Dyslexia

Technology can do wonderful things. From giving someone the ability to walk to letting you read news from anywhere in the world on a device as small as your palm. In the latest move to use technology to help people, a website looks to help explain Dyslexia to people who don’t quite understand how the illness works.

Someone looks to help others understand how people with Dyslexia see writing and have done so through a website which actually contains the first paragraph from Wikipedia describing the condition. You can find the original text here but if you are interested in seeing how Dyslexia affects people you may be more interested in this site.

The text appears to scramble itself, replacing one character with another while others move around all over the paragraphs. This is how some people would describe dyslexia, making even the simplest of sentences difficult to understand while large paragraphs become like ancient texts to those affected. As someone who suffers from dyslexia, I can understand what it is getting at. The simplest of texts can become difficult and while others say they “understand” being able to compare the experience to something like what the website shows goes a long way to helping people, both dyslexic and not, understand one another and the difficulties a subtle condition like this can have on everyday life.

Tesla Model 3 Will Be Released

Tesla has been pioneers in the electric car field, this has helped by charismatic CEO Elon Musk who has pushed Tesla firmly into the mainstream with innovations that capture consumer imagination. Tesla now plans to launch the “Model 3” with speculation that it will be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show on March 1st, 2016; this new model will sit alongside the current range that includes the model S and X.

Tesla’s chief designer Franz von Holzhausen had stated that the Model 3 will be conveyed to journalists and the public alike at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show, but that year has well and truly passed without a sign of Tesla’s new model. Now, Tesla’s spokesman Khobi Brooklyn has confirmed that the Model 3 will follow the original plan of it being released in March of this year, a slight caveat to this is that the car is not expected to be on general sale until around 2017.

As for the price, reports suggest that it will be around the $35,000 mark (£24,103.85) or around £30,000 once various taxes have been added on. Reports also suggest that this car will be limited to 300,000 units, although, this could change depending on the popularity etc.

Tesla’s projects are always worth following and this one should be no different.

Vin Diesel Announces Riddick Sequel Plans

Bounty Hunters, Unlikely Heroes, Escaping from Jails and Spaceships. The Riddick series has brought all of this and more to the screen, with actors such as Karl Urban and Dame Judi Dench starring in the film’s that at times seem to have been created by Vin Diesels determination to see the Riddick Universe expand. Riddick is an unlikely hero with a dark past, wanted around the universe for crimes and escaping prisons, one of which you can even play in Escape From Butchers Bay before having to escape yet again in the games sequel Assault on Dark Athena, both made by Tigon Studios, founded by (you guessed it) Vin Diesel himself. With his latest film, the Last Witch Hunter, being based on his D&D character and his love for the game, what’s next for Vin Diesel? The answer came in an Instagram post from the man himself.

In the pictures description, Vin Diesel states that “last night Our company had a party to launch Our TV division”. He then goes on to explain how Merc City, a new series, will follow the mercs and bounty hunters in the Riddick universe. He then ends the post by stating that next month “DT begins writing the next Chapter in the Chronicles of Riddick… FURIA”, DT standing for David Twohy, a screenwriter who has worked on every single Riddick film since Pitch Black started it all off.

Are you excited to see more from Riddick? Did you enjoy the Riddick games and do you want to see another one released for the new film or TV series?

YouTube To Hide Some New Videos Behind Subscription Serivce

YouTube has had a lot of news recently regarding its finance and more particular how people on it have asked for money or how it hopes to make some more money. Recently an indie games studio approached a YouTuber who requested around $22,000 to publicly review their game.

It has long been on the cards that YouTube may look at a subscription based model and most recently there were discussions about YouTube Red, an ad-free version of YouTube. Now it could see YouTube going up against the likes of Amazon Prime and Netflix with a new subscription service with its own programming. Expected to release more details at an event in Los Angeles next Wednesday (October 21st) the subscription service could see them bolstering the revenue they gain from their free to use but ad-supported site.

YouTube has suggested many things about the service, that it will support and contain shows from top creators while also encouraging anyone that makes an income from YouTube ads to join the service.

Are ads more trouble than they are worth? Could you see yourself playing your movies through YouTube? How much would it have to cost to interest you?

Clarkson vs Evans Battle Heats Up: Who Has Your Vote?

Oh Jeremy, why did you punch that producer? We now have to put up with Chris Evans taking over your spot on Top Gear. While Chris Evans is a great host, he doesn’t have the same brash attitude that Clarkson has, but that’s just my two cents.

In a recent turn of events, it seems that ITV has secured the deal to sign the ex-Top Gear trio to host a new motoring show that will go head to with the BBC counterpart, normally broadcast on Sundays at 8pm GMT.

Up until now, more news was crossing the Atlantic that Netflix was the hot pick for the trio to sign up. However, it seems that is no longer the case. The Mirror has reported that ‘ITV bosses plan to run the new programme in the Top Gear’s traditional slot – 8pm on Sunday nights’.

In the last few weeks, tensions have been rising between Clarkson and the new host, Chris Evans. Chris Evans has taken swipes at the previous presenter regarding reports of offers days before the BBC had approached Evans for the Job; stating that these may be from ‘inside his head’.

We are still waiting on an official release from ITV and Jeremy Clarkson regarding this new deal, so stay tuned as we bring you the latest updates.

If you are slightly scorn from the lack of Top Gear, BBC 2 will be broadcasting the last ever Clarkson, Hammond and May presented version tonight (28th June) at 8PM GMT.

ECS Presents Nano PC’s @ Computex 2015

Computex 2015 – During the amazing show offered by ECS, they casually presented a small range of the Mini PC’s that the company offers.

The two main shown were offerings that we’ve previously covered at CeBit 2015, featuring the brand new Braswell Mobile processors based on 14nm technology. They both support M.2 SSD cards and offer WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity; some impressive specifications for pint-sized PC’s. Thanks to the new 14nm Braswell CPU’s, these Mini PC’s can run completely passive and stay cool to the touch.

These products were not only shown over a larger projector, but also shown to the audience by showgirls.

We are planning multiple reviews regarding the Mini PC’s in the future, so keep your eyes peeled. We will keep you updated with any more news and events from Computex 2015.

PC Gamers to be Represented at E3

E3, that glorious event where game creators come together to blow our minds with what they have in store for gamers in the upcoming year. Last year we had the likes of Battlefield Hardline gracing the stage, but it’s always targeted for the same audience; console gamers.

This year is slightly different, yes at E3 there have been stalls with some PC paraphernalia tucked in a corner, but this year creators have come together to offer a PC gamers only event. PC hardware has never been so bang-for-buck powerful; just look at the NVIDIA GTX 960, absolutely smashing the mid-range budgets at 1080p for under £200. Developers have come to understand that and have now embraced it.

PC Gaming Show, presented by AMD and PC Gamer, the event will be hosted on June 16th in downtown Los Angeles. Kicking off in the Blasco Teater at 5PM PT, developers such as Blizzard, Square Enix, Devolver Digital and Bohemia Interactive will present some of their upcoming releases; alongside speakers like Cliff Bleszinski and Dean Hall. Now don’t worry, we will have coverage of the event on our website, but there will be a live stream via Twitch so you can see what exactly is going on.

We’ve already heard an E3 rumour story that AMD will be showcasing the hugely anticipated 300 series graphics cards; so maybe this is a fully tuned event to incorporate that.

Are you looking forward to any games or hardware to be announced at E3? Will you be watching with live stream or just catching up on news stories that interest you? Let us know in the comments.

Top Gear Producer Andy Wilman quits the show

The BBC has confirmed today that the executive producer of the famous series, Top Gear has quit the show in the wake of Jeremy Clarkson’s departure.

Former presenter Jeremy Clarkson was suspended by the BBC and dropped from the show after a “fracas” with  producer Osin Tymon in a Yorkshire over the lack of a hot meal after a day of filming. Andy Wilman was an integral part of the show; he helped re-invent the popular motoring show and change it into the £50 million per year wonder that fans love.

Wilman previously denied leaving the show when a leaked e-mail suggested he planned to. In the leaked e-mail he said:

“Our stint as guardians of Top Gear was a good one, but we were only part of the show’s history, not the whole of it. Those two words are bigger than us.”

Wilman stated the e-mail was “not a resignation statement, and nor was it meant for public consumption”.

The BBC refused to say if Wilman’s decision was related to Clarkson’s departure.

James May also has said that he will not return to the motoring show without fellow co-host Jeremy. He stated that running the show without Clarkson is “a bit of a daft idea”.

Thank you to  BBC News for providing us with this information.

Top Gear’s Clarkson to Be Fired, but the Show Will Go On

It seems the time of the petrol powered dinosaur is coming to an end. I’m a big fan of Top Gear, I love watching the show and to me, it’s incredibly entertaining. However, even I can understand that people are getting a bit tired of Clarkson and his antics both inside and out of his on-screen appearances. Now, it seems that the BBC has had enough too and today marks the day of the BBCs final decision. With one top executive saying the allegations had to be “dealt with in a very serious way.”

Not only was Top Gear pulled from filming, leaving the season incomplete, the four Norway appearances of Top Gear Live were also postponed this week. Now according to sources close to The Telegraph, Clarkson is to be fired after the investigation. So where does that leave the show?

May and Hammond have stated they wouldn’t work without Clarkson, but I believe that was only in relation to matters at the start of these events, regarding the continued filming of the show to complete the season. They’ll no doubt save their final vote until the dust has settled, as the show will still need a replacement host before they know if they’ve still got a job to attend/refuse.

Rumours are suggesting that the BBC top brass are trying to win over Chris Evans, who has said he had no intentions of taking the job at Top Gear. However, it’s still early days and he may just be brushing off the press to avoid souring any potential deals or playing for a better offer.

It’ll be interesting to see how the BBC plays this out. Not only does Clarkson have those who want to see him gone, but also a large group who want to see him stay. Even Snoop Dog was quoted saying “The BBC got to be crazy to even think about firing Jeremy Clarkson” and “He isn’t part of Top Gear — he IS Top Gear”.

Will Clarkson and his co-hosts break off and do their own thing? It’s certainly likely, will Top Gear return to our screen in one form or another? Certainly, especially since the show rakes in £50m for the BBC each year!

Huge Range of ASUS Notebooks @ CeBIT 2015

ASUS, one of the biggest players in the consumer technology industry, never fails to deliver. What started out as a humble motherboard manufacturer has now turned into a dominant name throughout the market. Asus has been in the notebook PC market for a little while and what we saw today a small range of its’ offerings. We were a little more surprised with the Smart Watch on display. A very understated piece, but this felt good in hand and reacted well when used.

Along with the notebooks and smart watch, we saw a little of ASUS’ network offerings, we know how good they are, in fact I’m currently using the RT-AC68U router which we using in our motherboard network testing because it is that good. However, I do want to see a ROG version, a nice red detailed with the ROG logo would set one of their routers off.

We look forward to see what ASUS brings to the table in the future, with smart watch competition heating up and tablets becoming a more dominant portable use, will we see many more notebooks from ASUS? Any news of events from ASUS, we will keep you updated.

ASUS Showcase Mini PC’s @ CeBIT 2015

ASUS, humble motherboard makers have now delved into the mini PC segment. This can only be a good thing, as ASUS know how to make the motherboards, maybe it can produce an extremely compact system from the vast company knowledge. We saw one regular (boring) looking mini PC, the VIVO mini, this could sit happily behind your TV without a fuss. The next was a Chromebox, a little more of a funky design with the power button on the corner, but still nothing too spectacular here. Then we move onto the ROG not-so-mini, mini PC. This little beast is something you want to shout about. Okay it only has a GTX 750Ti for the time being, but it’s only a matter of time before ASUS figure out how to squeeze a GTX 970 ITX graphics card into it. This is a serious bit of kit, with a serious ~£800 price tag. A little over priced for what it is, but innovation has to start somewhere right?

Along with the more consumer-friendly mini PC’s, we also saw ASUS keep things simple, displaying a small range of external Blu-Ray and DVD writers. It’s good to see a huge company keep the old technology users in the loop; maybe they don’t want to go digital just yet.

We look forward to seeing what else ASUS has to offer, maybe they do have a more powerful ROG gaming mini PC coming up, but it just wasn’t ready for the show?. Any news or updates from ASUS, we will keep you updated.

ASUS Showcase Enthusiast Tech @ CeBIT 2015

ASUS displayed a huge range of its technology here at CeBIT 2015. Nothing here today really stood out to use apart from the brand new X99 Sabertooth, full news article to be found here! I’m glad that the decision was made to finally produced this, it completes the range of the already extensive X99 series motherboards. We also saw the Z97-Deluxe and H97M-E, two of ASUSs’ biggest selling Z97 chipset motherboards.

ASUS kept the enthusiast section to a relatively small portion of the whole stand, which I found was a shame considering motherboards are what built it up, its forte so to speak. The most interesting stand out piece of tech on show was the show bench with a Matrix Platinum AMD R9 290X; powering the nearby computer for users to have a quick play on. Maybe we’ll see a little more of the enthusiast segment when we go to i-series in the near future.

We look forward to seeing what else ASUS has up its sleeve, maybe the finishing touches are being put on the Intel Z170 chipset motherboards and R9 300 series graphics cards. Any news or updates from ASUS, we will keep you updated.

OCZ Drives at CeBIT 2015

OCZ, a tech enthusiast household name. One of the first companies to mass produce consumer SSD drives and succeeded. They had small teething issues at the beginning with poor read/ write cycle; however they have now sorted the issues and provide some of the longest warranty periods and read/ write cycle life span. We see no new additions to the line-up compared to CES, but there’s not really been any advancements in SSD technology for a little while.

I personally love OCZ products, I’ve owned a few of their SSD’s like the Agility 3 and still use it to this day. We can’t wait for a new advancement in SSD technology for the sector to boom once again. Any news or events from OCZ, we will keep you updated.

LIVA Mini PC at CeBIT 2015

Today at CeBIT, we met up with ECS. They presented us with their new line up of LIVA mini PC’s. The main focus of today’s talk was on the newest addition, the LIVA-X. The LIVA-X follows the new method of using a single piece of pressed aluminium to give it a very high-end premium feel and finish to the product. It’s a little bigger than some of the usual mini PC’s, but this packs a punch. It has enough power to display on 2 screens, using the VGA and HDMI ports.

We were also presented with 2 prototypes which are still unnamed. They followed a similar design process as the LIVA-X, but they had a great connectivity package and some sleeker cases, appealing a great market with a brushed gunmetal case with perspex top and a soft white case; these could typically appeal to the male and female market segments.

We are very excited to see what ECS has presented us and for what they have up their sleeves for the future in terms of both mini PC’s ad motherboards. Any news or events, we will keep you updated.

Latest Zotac ZBOX Systems @ CeBIT 2015

During our meeting with ZOTAC, we were presented with their ZBOX range, a very nice range indeed. Where they offer a comprehensive range, they have now categorised each ZBOX into 6 categories: Epic Gaming (E), Sphere (O), Pico (P), Passive Cooling (C), Multimedia (M) and Basic (B). These categories have pretty much every typical home user covered. A Very simple and small alternative to buying a mass produced tower computer from a high street retailer.

We loved seeing the vast range and diversity from ZOTAC today with all their products. I personally really liked the PICO box, I could use this to present my ideas in meetings, without having to rely on a comparatively bulky laptop and projector combination.

I look forward to seeing additional Mini PC’s added to the range from ZOTAC, possibly a detachable screen added to the top of the PICO box for “on the move” use. Any news or events, we will keep you updated.

Plextor Booth @ CeBIT 2015

So we’re here at CeBIT 2015 with Plextor. They brought along today two test benches featuring their M6e PCI SSD drive and their M7e MSATA SSD.

We’ve seen this technology before at CES, but it’s definitely worth mentioning the serious speed increase using the PlexTurbo application to get massive speed increases. We see in the image below, over 8GB/s read speeds and over 7GB/s write speed. To put that in perspective, roughly an hour episode of Breaking Bad at 1080p is roughly 1GB rounded down; this drive can transfer 8 episodes a second at that speed.

We look forward to new innovative technology brought forward by Plextor in the near future. Any news or events from Plextor, we will keep you updated. We even heard rumour that Version 3 of their drive may be ready in time for Computex, but we’ll have to wait and see!

ASRock X99 OC Formula USB 3.1 @ CeBIT 2015

Here at CeBIT 2015 with the ASRock members, showcasing a small range of this current generation motherboard, During our meeting, we noticed this outstanding X99 Haswell-E motherboard. Very similar features that we have come to expect from ASRock and their X99 based motherboards, but this has been equipped with the newest 3.1 USB ports. Along with the new USB 3.1 ports, we have the usual 8 DIMM slots, 5 PCI-e slots (4 gold and 1 black) and a huge expansion slot for a M.2 device.

We will be very interested in any new technology brought forward by ASRock in the near future. Any news and events, we will keep you updated,

New Lian-Li Desk Chassis Prototype Unveiled @ CeBIT 2015

Here again with LIAN LI at CeBIT 2015. LIAN LI is no stranger to pushing the design envelope, being one of the first companies to commercially produce ‘desk PCs’ where you can build your PC into your desk for the ultimate ego boost.

We were presented with 2 new desks, the first is in final design stages with will be commercially available very soon (pictured below), the second is an early prototype (pictured above), which in terms of chassis size, it’s the ITX size of the desk PC’s, but will likely have support for larger motherboards. This ‘desk’ is perfect for having sat under a wall mounted TV or even in the middle of the room if you don’t mind wires under carpets. This would make the ultimate coffee table.

We look forward to bringing you more information on these products, and will keep you updated with future press release information.

Latest ASRock AIO Computers @ CeBIT 2015

Following our previous coverage of ASRock at CeBIT 2015, they also presented a small range of their AIO computers. The most notable being the Alienware esq M8. This features a SFX 600W power supply to offer support for a single AMD R9 290x, NVIDIA GTX Titan or GTX 780Ti. The rest of the range was smaller AIO computers like the VisionX 471D. Despite its small size, this comes with a 256GB mSATA SSD, a 2TB HDD with additional space for a 2.5″ drive and an i7 mobile CPU. This little box packs a big punch and is sure to shake up the market.

We look forward to testing ASRock’s future products. Any news or events we will keep you updated.

New Enermax Products on Show @ CeBIT 2015

We’re here with Enermax at CeBIT 2015. They’re showcasing a small range of products from their line-up, most notable is the 550w digital, modular, 80PLUS Platinum, 5 year warranty and FANLESS power supply. Normally you would only get a small combination of those features, but to have them all in one package is simply amazing.

We look forward to the release of this power supply and the rest of the line-up in the near future. Any further news or events from Enermax, we will keep you updated.

be quiet! booth @ CeBIT 2015

So carrying on with the be quiet! stand at CeBIT 2015. We have a rather impressive range of products on display, from their newest case, the Silent Base 800, down to their range of Silent Wing fans.

All the technology shown here has previously been covered during CES 2015 apart from the new Double Glazing window for the Silent Base 800, which can be found here, and the Dark Power Pro 11 series power supply, which can be found here!

We look forward to see what be quiet! has to offer in the coming weeks and months. We will keep you posted on any news and events from be quiet! and the rest of CeBIT 2015!

Lepa Display Latest Products @ CeBIT 2015

Here with Enermax still, with a small presentation of their LEPA series of consumer goods. Aimed at more of the enthusiast consumer market, they have brought along one of their LV12 series tower cooler and an example of their 240mm AIO liquid cooling unit; the AquaChanger.

Apart from internal computer items, we have a self-contained Bluetooth speaker unit; the BTS002. NFC support along with the Bluetooth connectivity. An impressive 2200mA power unit and a built-in microphone for the freedom of handfree.

We look forward to seeing more from LEPA in the near future. Any news or events from LEPA, we will keep you updated.

Latest Lian-Li Accessories at CeBIT 2015

Here at CeBIT 2015, we caught up with LIAN LI; the Bugatti of the chassis world. Today’s line-up presents some of the lesser known products of LIAN LI, all of the accessories from HDD raid racks to 5.25″ drive bay control panels. LIAN LI don’t do half measures, everything is in high-quality aluminium, keeping in look with their chassis range, but also aids their durability.

One device that caught our eye was the external MSATA enclosure with USB 3.1 optional connectivity. It’s great to see how quickly manufacturers have adopted this new standard, but also give the option of previous generation support for those using slightly out-dated tech.

We look forward to seeing more of LIAN LI’s products in the future. Any news of events from LIAN LI, we will keep you updated.
