Yahoo Mail Went Down And All They Got Was A Single Tweet

In this day and age, keeping your customers up to date is as important as getting them on board in the first place. Reports started circulating yesterday that Yahoo users weren’t able to access their email accounts, and all they got for their troubles was a single tweet.

Originally reported in the thread titled “Yahoo Mail has been down for 14 hours, affecting thousands of users in Europe”, users went from saying that having their service shut down without any response being unacceptable to the barrage of comments from users asking if the service was ever truly running these days or how many people were actually affected by the problem (including a rather large barrage joking about the use of Yahoo mail for business reasons).

After checking out Yahoo Mail’s twitter page (the quickest way to update people these days on issues it would seem), the page was filled with nothing but advertisements spread out over days with no communications regarding the reported outage. That was until we checked out their support page, Yahoo Care. Amongst a slew of advertisements for their fantasy baseball teams was a single tweet saying that some users were experiencing issues.

With people replying saying that they haven’t been able to access their account for extended periods and with no support, a single tweet hardly seems to be cut it (pun intended).

In this day and age, taking days to fix a problem with little to no support for your users seems like a quick way to lose people to other webmail solutions like Gmail and Outlook. We will try to keep you updated (as well as we can with the little information that seems to be available at this moment).

Reddit Releases Official Smartphone App

Reddit, the self-proclaimed “front page of the internet”, has released its first official app for Android and iOS, and not before time. While reddit-loving mobile users have been well-catered for with a number of solid third-party smartphone apps – including BaconReader, reddit is fun, and Alien Blue, which was adopted by reddit as the de-facto official app since 2014 – waiting 11 years to release your first official app is a little tardy.

“This is the beginning of our journey with you, our app users. For everyone joining us on this ride,” writes Alex Le, reddit’s new Vice President of of Consumer Products, in a reddit announcement, “you can expect a lot of updates and new features that we’ll be rolling out to mobile first. Our first feature releases are getting prepared now and we’ll be updating at least once a month. Of course, if you already have an app you like, you’re free to continue enjoying it. We will continue to support our free public api.”

“Please give our new apps a spin and post love notes, feature requests, roasts, etc., to this thread. We’d love to hear what you think and will be incorporating feedback,” he added. “I will personally read each top comment (using the Speed Read button in our iPhone app!).”

Reddit Warrant Canary Gets Triggered

Since Edward Snowden first brought light to the United States use of National Security Letters, various internet companies have taken to enacting warrant canaries as a way to let users know if they ever do to receive a National Security Letter. One notable organization, reddit previously had a warrant canary in their annual transparency report but this year, it has conspicuously gone missing, more or less confirming they have gotten an NSL.

National Security Letters work through the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, where courts can issue a secret order that the recipient is not allowed to reveal to the public. In order to warn their users without violating such an order, warrant canaries are used. The canary is a document or statement that states that the firm hasn’t yet received a secret warrant as of X date. When the notice doesn’t get updated or gets taken down, users will know the firm has been served with a secret warrant with a gag. The theory is that while courts may prevent speech, they can’t compel a firm to either lie or to continue speaking.

reddit has been understandably quiet about the whole issue, with CEO Steve Huffman only saying “I’ve been advised not to say anything one way or the other”. By not given a proper reason for the removal of the canary, it more or less confirms that they did receive an NSL and can’t talk about it. Secret warrants are problematic due to the harm they cause to due process and freedom of speech. Another notable firm that has triggered their warrant canary is Apple.

Steve Wozniak: Apple Isn’t “Changing the World” Any More

Steve Wozniak – who, alongside Steve Jobs, co-founded Apple – thinks that his former company is not the one he and Jobs set up, is no longer “changing the world” like it once was, and that the Apple Watch merely a vanity item.

During an AMA on reddit, Wozniak – affectionately known as ‘Woz’ – was asked how he thought Tim Cook, the current CEO of Apple, was doing in the role. While Woz was complimentary about Cook’s support for both employees and customers of Apple, he criticised its current business model for following trends, rather than setting (or, as some may accuse the company, ‘stealing’) them:

Woz wrote:

“Tim Cook is acknowledging the employees of Apple and the customers of Apple as real people. He is continuing a strong tradition that Steve Jobs was known for of making good products that help people do things they want to do in their life, and not taking the company into roads of, “Oh, we’ll make all our money like by knowing you and advertising to you.” We’ll make good products. And you know, I started out as a hardware product guy, so I’m glad to see that.

I worry a little bit about – I mean I love my Apple Watch, but – it’s taken us into a jewelry market where you’re going to buy a watch between $500 or $1100 based on how important you think you are as a person. The only difference is the band in all those watches. Twenty watches from $500 to $1100. The band’s the only difference? Well this isn’t the company that Apple was originally, or the company that really changed the world a lot. So it might be moving, but you’ve got to follow, you know. You’ve got to follow the paths of where the markets are.

Everything else, I’m very approving of Tim Cook, because every time we have a new iOS update, I’m very happy that it’s doing things that really affect people. Like transferring calls from my phone to my computer, etc. I really love even the Airplay, and all that. So, I love the software, and I love the hardware, and nothing’s letting me down. So I approve very strongly of Tim Cook and the new Apple. I dearly miss Steve Jobs too, but, that’s all.”

Woz says he’s very supportive of Apple in its fight against the FBI, though, and believes that backdoors in encrypted systems are too much of a risk, writing, “if some code gets written in an Apple product that lets people in, bad people are going to find their way to it, very likely.”

Bill Gates ‘Will Look Into’ New Age of Empires

Bill Gates is known for a lot of things from his ability to keep track of employees by their license plates to his recent investments in green energy. What would you expect then when the man takes to Reddit for an ama (ask me anything) thread? It would seem that someone had an idea and decided to ask about a new Age Of Empires.

The original question was asked by le-click and read:

Mr. Gates, can we please have another Age of Empires? Not sure if this is your department, but I figured I’d ask since you were here…

Thanks!

A simple question for a man who doesn’t really have that big a part in the everyday running of Microsoft. To people’s surprise, the question was answered by the man himself:

I will look into this. How many empires do you need?

While people on the internet are going crazy over the prospect that this could potentially mean a new Age of Empires game, possibly even taking the game back to its hay day of Age of Empires 2 (a series so good people are still playing it and using it as a baseline for strategy games), they may need to hold off on the enthusiasm.

When ThatNintendoFan commented saying about making it the top question on Reddit, Bill Gates reply was clear:

I think you did – sorry I can’t deliver an Empire (or an Age) easily.

So there you have it, we might have had another Age of Empires but Bill Gates decided to troll with our feelings. Now if you don’t mind me I feel like I need to start up the game and take my anger out on several AI opponents.

Pirates of Stardew Valley Getting Given Copies From Players

Typically when a game comes out there are two kinds of people who end up playing the game. Firstly you have the people who purchase the game, looking to enjoy the game in all its glory. You then have the people who will illegally download the game, looking to enjoy the fun without supporting the games creators and losing out on a little cash for the experience. Players have come up with an ingenious way to solve this problem though, with pirates of Stardew Valley getting given copies from other players.

Stardew Valley is currently one of the most played games on Steam, with people looking all over to enjoy the experience, some without paying the £10.99 the game costs on Steam. The response from the community in support of this game is unique, with a member of a Reddit forum looking to pay back the creator by forwarding a few copies of the game on to people who couldn’t afford to buy it.

The original post reads:

So today’s payday and I’ve got a bit of cash leftover after paying my bills. I’d like to use it to pay /u/ConcernedApe back for the awesome game he/se’s made and his/her absolutly stellar involvement with the community.

If any of you folks can’t play because you’re out of cash, let me play it forward for ya 🙂

P.S. That being said, I’m not exactly made of money. I probably won’t be able to buy everyone in the thread a copy of the game. So, sorry in advance if I miss you. Maybe another generous member of the community could spread the love?

EDIT: Forgot to mention, you don’t need to post your Steam name or anything. I’m sending Humble Store gift links because the Humble Store takes a smaller cut of the sticker price than Steam or GOG. That means more of my money will be going directly to ConcernedApe. The Humble Store doesn’t give you a DRM-free copy, but it DOES provide a Steam key.

This quickly became a thing, with people requesting a free copy of the game, followed by people looking to give out copies as well, with more and more people looking to both share the game and support its creator.

I don’t think this is a one off either, other threads have already appeared offering the same deal and I wouldn’t be surprised if big hit successes get threads like this more and more often in the future.

Raspberry Pi 3 May Suffer Overheating Problems

The Raspberry Pi Foundation recently released the latest iteration of its credit card-sized mini computer, the Raspberry Pi 3, to glowing reviews, praising its improved speeds and onboard WiFi and Bluetooth 4.1, but on reddit user has noticed that, under certain circumstances, the board might be prone to serious overheating problems, with temperatures approaching 100oC.

Reddit user ghalfacree posted a photo of his Raspberry Pi 3 (above), taken with a calibrated Flir thermal camera, which showed that the computer’s BCM2837 SoC hit temperatures of 97.3oC.

“The new BCM2837 system-on-chip gets far, far hotter than its predecessors,” ghalfacree wrote on reddit. “This image was taken using a calibrated Flir thermal camera while the Pi 3 had been at 100% CPU load – but no GPU load – for five minutes, and registered nearly 100°C (212°F). I confirmed the temperature with a K-type contact probe, and also by poking the chip.”

“Don’t poke the chip. It hurts,” ghalfacree added.

“I’d recommend picking up a small heatsink for the Pi 3, the first Pi that I’d actually say is worth doing so, and if you’re reusing an existing case keep an eye on the temperature – you may need to make a cut-out to increase the ventilation, especially if you’re using an enclosed slice-style case like the original-design Pimoroni PiBow (which has been modified with a heatsink cut-out specifically for the Pi 3.)”

“Oh, and don’t trust the built-in thermal sensor: when that picture was taken, the internal sensor was happily reporting sub-80°C (176°F) temperatures,” ghalfacree warned.

In response to the post, Raspberry Pi 3 co-creator Eben Upton assured customers that they should not experience overheating issues under normal operating conditions, and the reddit post in question was regarding stress testing.

“[C]o-creator of the board Eben Upton has said that – outside of synthetic tests that place the board’s processor under prolonged strain – the Pi 3 is highly unlikely to behave in this way,” ZDNet reports.

AMD Radeon reddit AMA Highlights – Polaris on 14nm

With the reddit AMA now behind us, we can share with you some of the answers that we felt were the highlight of the question period. As expected, AMD was a bit light on details and specifics about Polaris but there were a number of important and new pieces of information.

The biggest news is that Polaris will be using the 14nm LPP FinFET process from GlobalFoundries, not a mix of 14nm LPP and 16nm FinFET+ from TSMC as previous leaked. This means Nvidia and AMD will no longer be sharing a process node for their CPUs. It also means that AMD’s GPU and CPU lineups will now be using the same process, simplifying things for APUs. Furthermore, the Taiwan earthquake that hit TSMC won’t impact Polaris yields and timeline as well. Polaris is also confirmed once again for a mid-2016 launch. Polaris will also bring Display Port 1.3 support as well.

Another confirmation is the move that AMD started in 2014 with a big annual driver release with major feature additions spaced out with point releases for specific fixes and optimizations. Those hoping that RTG would speed up driver updates to implement more features faster will be disappointed. For hardware, Fiji Gemini has already debuted for B2B customers and shipped to them but consumer launch is still waiting for HMD VR, a mistake in my mind.

Other tidbits include the fact that the LiquidVR SDK has support Affinity Multi-GPU which will allow a dedicated GPU for each eye in VR. VR is also expected to make use of TrueAudio, something that PC has shunned but consoles have picked up a bit on. There are also 25 million active daily users for AMD’s Gaming Evolved application.

Finally, AMD revealed that the optimal tessellation amount for GCN is 8-16x. Beyond that, there will be a heavy performance hit for no real gain in visual fidelity *cough* HairWorks/GameWorks. VSR or virtual super resolution is also performance free with GCN. There will be more Polaris details as we get closer to launch so stay tuned.

AMD Radeon AMA to Happen Thursday March 3rd

Stanard practice in the technology world is for established firms to keep everything super secret till the day they launch. AMD however, is bucking the trend and will be hosting an AMA (Ask Me Anything) on reddit in just a day, on Thursday Mach 3rd. The AMA will happen between 10 AM and 5 PM US Central time and will be focused on the GPU side of things or Radeon Technologies Group (RTG).

AMD Robert from RTG will be the main host and there will likely be some big secrets to be unveiled that day. Given that AMD is confident enough to start talking more about their upcoming Polaris GPUs hopefully means the launch will be imminent as some leaks as suggested. Major expected topics include Vulkan, FreeSync, GPUOpen, Polaris, Fury X2, VR and DirectX 12 as expected. The conversation will likely coalesce around Polaris though as that is the upcoming GCN architecture.

Unfortunately for CPU lovers, questions about Zen are banned and will not be answered as it is still a super secret. We will be following the AMA closely on Thursday and will bring any new juicy details AMD reveals as they happen. Here’s hoping FuryX2 finally gets off the ground.

Super Mario Cluttered Chaos-Calculator Level Anyone?

Creativity is never more alive than when the gaming community decides to invent whole levels based on various creative influences. The Super Mario Maker title has been an exciting and imaginative vehicle that aims to open up a range of possibilities for all kinds of creative mischief, one such level involves a working calculator within the super Mario Universe.

Want to know more? Of course  you do, the project is coined “The Cluttered Chaos Calculator” and has been created by Mario Level Maker  “Giant”, it works out a maths equation (6+6) and is demonstrated by the video below, luckily, there is a reddit guide to explain exactly what is going on.

To put it simply, “this Super Mario Maker level lets you select two numbers between 0 and 7, it lets the player choose their way up and then computes and displays their sum automatically”.

There is also an image via sharing site imgur which reveals the logic behind this fantastic project. It has been noted that similar adding machines have been created in the past using Super Mario Maker, but, this looks to be the “first one with a decimal conversion and proper display of the result”.

It’s an incredibly complex yet educational tool all rolled into one, just reading the extremely detailed breakdown is fascinating, hopefully, we will see many more creative examples as in this case within the future.

Breathtaking Images From an Astronaut Aboard the ISS

Space has always provided a glimpse into many a fascinating world over the years, from research that has been undertaken by NASA to the Astronauts who have boarded the International Space Station as well as successfully landing on the moon. One such Astronaut, Scott Kelly, has been posting breathtaking images on social media that have included Twitter (1,158 photos and counting) and Instagram (684 posts and counting) during his yearlong visit to the ISS, below is a snapshot of these images.

The first image represents the massive blizzard passing over Chicago on Saturday 23rd January 2016, the image looks awe-inspiring.

The next image below is of what is known as “thundersnow” from the blizzard and was captured, again, on the 23rd January 2016.

The next image below, wow, is of an aurora and was captured on the 27th August 2015, this looks akin to a science fiction film.

The next image below is of Spain, well, more specifically Barcelona and was captured on the 28th July 2015, this is both a stunning and a detailed image.

The next image below is the Astronauts latest Twitter post as of writing (26th January 2016) and has the caption “Day 304. That’s 4,864 orbits a’round’ our beautiful planet #Earth. #GoodNight from @space_station! #YearInSpace”, it is certainly a brilliant image.

The last image is of Scott Kelly undertaking a Q&A on Reddit from space, well, yes, as you do, this image was posted on the 23rd January 2016

New Windows 10 Update Re-Enables Data Collection Disabled by Third-Party Software

Anecdotal evidence suggests that Microsoft’s November update for Windows 10 has re-enabled all data collection features that may have been disabled by the user via third-party software. Many Windows 10 users, while enjoying the new operating system, are not best pleased at Mircosoft’s draconian approach to metadata collection, and so have been using third-party software such as DisableWinTracking or DoNotSpy10.

Members of the r/PCMasterRace subreddit, however, have reported that since the Windows 10 November Update, which effectively reinstalls the operating system on a computer, those who had previously disabled tracking features have had their changes reset to their defaults.

While some are accusing Microsoft of using the update to deliberately turn the data tracking settings of Windows 10 back on, it makes sense that what effectively amounts to a fresh Windows install would return some settings to their default.

“The November (Fall) Update literally reinstalls the entire operating system, which is why program defaults and a lot more end up reverting and disabled things may come back. I honestly hope they improve this upgrade system for the next big update because this has seriously caused a lot of people some trouble,” posted Puremin0rez.

Anyone using third-party software to disable Windows 10’s tracking features should check to see if their settings have been changed following the November update and adjust accordingly.

Mass Effect: Andromeda Details Leaked?

Two mods from the Mass Effect subreddit (‘Salsadips‘ and ‘KYCygni’) have been contacted by an anonymous source claiming to have played an early version of BioWare’s Mass Effect: Andromeda and supplied them with details of the in-development game. While none of the information, nor the integrity of the source itself, can be verified, the two mods say that they have been provided proof of the leaker’s integrity.

The pair compiled the information gleaned from their source into the following YouTube video:

Mass Effect subreddit user DealWithTheC-12 handily broke down the key points contained in the video for those unable to watch:

  • 2 squad mates as before, a human blonde and a Krogan mentioned;
  • All squad mates have jetpacks which come into play in exploration;
  • Omnitool has more functionality, for example a combat shield;
  • Greater detail in character facial features and models;
  • Destructible covers (Yay Frostbite!);
  • Completely different ship (I take it as a step away from the frigate sized ship that we saw in Normandy and towards a larger ship, perhaps the one seen here);
  • Hints at Mako customization;
  • ‘Pathfinder quarters’ section in the ship
  • Main character is referred to as ‘the pathfinder’;
  • Story revolves around finding a new home for humanity and other races;
  • New ship travel system (Instead of the old galaxy map) where you manually fly the ship;
  • Enemies (the main opposing force I assume) are bipedal cross between Vorcha and Collectors;
  • The (non-human) enemies drop into combat from Cerberus ships (I would assume a placeholder, but if it’s not then it gets interesting)
  • One of the antagonists is a human soldier with armor similar to yours but without N7 insignia.

GreenMan Gaming Denies Selling ‘Grey Market’ Games

Online digital game retailer GreenMan Gaming has been accused of selling so-called ‘grey market’ games – games that are legally sourced, but that are being sold in a manner that does not benefit the publisher or developer – by users of the GameDeals subreddit.

After members of the subreddit discovered that GreenMan Gaming was selling unauthorised copies of CD Projekt RED’s epic RPG The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, GameDeals mod gamedealsmod (not just a clever name) contacted a number of publishers to determine if the online game retailer was an authorised reseller. While WB Games confirmed that GreenMan sells its games legitimately, Activision and Ubisoft revealed that they have no official relationship with the site.

Following this revelation, GameDeals banned GreenMan Gaming sales from the subreddit.

Paul Sulyok, CEO ofGreenMan Gaming, has released a statement denying the accusations, drawing a distinction between being an authorised reseller and selling games that are “sourced responsibly”. The full statement (via Gamespot) reads:

Dear Reddit

First of all, we are very disappointed that we were unable to come to a mutual understanding with the Reddit Game Deal moderators: /r/GameDeals

Over the past year, we have been repeatedly asked to supply sensitive information regarding contracts between us and publishers, which for legal reason we simply cannot share, nor should we be expected to. We believe that other retailers featured on Reddit Game Deals have not been afforded the same level of scrutiny and investigation that we have endured, and that ultimately, customers will be missing out on information and deals.

We find the research carried out by the Reddit Game Deal mods has been subjective or inaccurate. We know they share the same aims as we do; to offer customers great value on great games, so it brings us no pleasure to publicly state – they are wrong.

We have always been transparent that for us, the customer is our priority. We have withdrawn from Reddit Game Deals as we no longer have the time and resources to keep offering proof and statements to their persistent group of moderators. Our focus as always should be and is our customers.

We reiterate that we source our keys from a range of over 400 publishers, developers, and distributors to meet customer’s demands on a title by title basis. Let’s be clear here; there is a difference between being an authorised retailer for some titles, and being a retailer selling keys that have been sourced responsibly through authorised third parties with revenue going back to the publisher. If a key unlocks, it is an authentic key. This isn’t a perfect science as human error can affect the supply chain. Where possible, we work directly with publishers and distributors to make sure customers have the very best experience with us.

Whenever things outside of our control have happened, we have instantly and fairly tried to make it right. We accept that we don’t always get it right, and we are sorry for any inconvenience caused. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank our customers, the Reddit Game Deal community, and everyone who has supported us.

Thank you

Payday 2 Black Market Updated “Working as we Intended” Says Producer

Payday 2’s Crimefest update implemented microtransactions and dramatically altered the game’s reception on Steam. Previously, the development team made assurances that microtranactions wouldn’t appear in Payday 2, and it seems they have had a change of heart. This has caused outrage throughout the incredibly passionate Payday 2 community and resulted in a fractured user-base. The game’s producer tried to alleviate people’s concerns during an AMA on Reddit. However, he spoke quite disparagingly about the game’s incensed fanbase and said:

“We understand that there is a lot of fury, anger and disappointment with us adding this. From an economical standpoint however, completely based on statistics, we can already see that the Black Market update is working as we intended. Going forward, we hope we can convince the parts of the community that resist this change that this was the right decision to do to ensure the stability of OVERKILL as an independent developer and the future growth of PAYDAY 2.”

This is a diplomatic way of saying the update has been a financial success and they’re not overly concerned with the negative reception. Therefore, this is quite an eye-opening response and bound to upset many of the game’s community. On another note, the developer has to be extraordinarily careful to look at the long-term perspective. If they annoy the player base too much, they will leave and result in a dwindling online community. Only time will tell how this pans out, but the developer’s current attitude is far from ideal.

CNN’s Ignorance Around Gaming is Quite Skillful

It’s not uncommon for the mainstream media to produce inaccurate pieces typecasting video gamers and being completely out of touch. However, a recent article by CNN has to be the most ludicrous example I’ve ever seen which includes insulting, inaccurate claims in the heading. Unbelievably, the article is entitled, “Video games aren’t just for anitisocial nerds!” to outline the financial success of the video gaming industry. This amount of incompetence and shamefully lazy writing emphasizes the sort of content typically seen on CNN. It’s quite laughable considering studies show the average gamer is in the 30-40 age bracket, and multiplayer/co-op titles are incredibly popular.

To make matters worse, the article goes on to say:

“If you think that the only people who play video games are a bunch of underemployed loners sitting in their parents’ basement, think again.”

I’m completely flabbergasted by the audacity of CNN’s lies and derogatory comments. Video games are played by a huge amount of the population across various ages, genders, and socioeconomic backgrounds. The concept that the industry is a multi-billion dollar success story and grossed more than the film industry from a niche audience alone is ridiculous. Obviously, CNN sees gaming’s new and interactive media as a threat and is trying once again to discredit it. However, all they have done is expose their own bias.

I could write a 2000 word essay disproving these claims, but CNN is an ancient, judgmental piece of media which doesn’t deserve much attention. While I have brought this story to attention, it’s only to outline how cringeworthy many of the mainstream media outlets are. In an era where Reddit, Twitter and community media becomes more important, traditional news sources try to do anything to hold onto power.

Professor Stephen Hawking is Scared of AI “Incompetence”

Professor Stephen Hawking has been very vocal about the dangers of artificial intelligence – once warning that it could destroy humanity – and now the theoretical physicist has clarified the root of his fears. During a reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything), Professor Hawking, in response to a teacher bored of having “The Terminator Conversation” with students, said, “The real risk with AI isn’t malice but competence.”

Hawking, however, also warned of intelligent robots that are too efficient, adding, “A superintelligent AI will be extremely good at accomplishing its goals, and if those goals aren’t aligned with ours, we’re in trouble.” So, unless we can find a middle-ground between under- and over-competence, we’re screwed, according to the eminent scientist.

“You’re probably not an evil ant-hater who steps on ants out of malice, but if you’re in charge of a hydroelectric green energy project and there’s an anthill in the region to be flooded, too bad for the ants,” Hawking said. “Let’s not place humanity in the position of those ants.”

Hawking even posed his own question to reddit users, asking people if they are afraid of being made obsolete by AI. “Have you thought about the possibility of technological unemployment[1] , where we develop automated processes that ultimately cause large unemployment by performing jobs faster and/or cheaper than people can perform them?” he asked. He later answers his own question, stating, “So far, the trend seems to be toward [machine owners controlling the economy], with technology driving ever-increasing inequality.”

The sentiment was summed up effectively by reddit user beeegoood, who lamented, “Oh man, that’s depressing.”

Possible Fix Found For Windows 10 Error With Taskbar and Cortana.

The release of Windows 10 has been rather odd in many respects, yes it’s an improvement over the much maligned previous OS in terms of user interface, but privacy concerns coupled with a monitoring tool that allows parents to effectively spy on their children’s browsing habits by default has led to a rather mixed reception. Among the many errors and glitches that have befallen consumers is the rather annoying bug that has led to the failure of both Cortana and the taskbar for many individuals, who have been subsequently privileged to a “Critical Error” when attempting to launch both applications. So much so that the official Microsoft answers board has seen consumers vent their frustrations concerning the problem.

Well, this error might have been in part clarified by a redditor that goes by the moniker “Xeasar”, who has seemingly found a fix when this individual attempted to uninstall Avast Anti-Virus. It was found that as soon as this software had been removed, both Cortana and the Taskbar returned to full functionality, leading to the conclusion of compatibility issues with this particular program. Whether this is the sole cause of the problem or down to a variety of incompatible applications remains to be seen.

According to “Xeasar”, Microsoft is aware of the problem and as a result is working on a patch for the issue. On occasions software developers view consumers with suspicion even though in many cases it’s those same people who find a way to fix issues with certain products. It will be interesting to note how and when Microsoft patches this issue and it also conveys the unstable nature of a new OS in its first year.

Mozilla Set to Fire Employee Responsible for Hate Speech on Reddit

Mozilla’s CEO has vowed to fire an employee who was suspected of engaging in a vitriolic tirade on Reddit. The person in question used the alias, aoiyama and expressed joyous glee from the recent departure of Mozilla’s community organizer, Christie Koehler, and said:

“Everyone was glad to see the back of her”

“When she and the rest of her blue-haired, nose-pierced ***hole feminists are gone, the tech industry will breathe a sigh of relief.”

From a PR perspective, this was a disaster as the Reddit user is a Mozilla representative and could give an overall impression of their views on gender diversity in technology. Of course, Mozilla need to take firm, authoritative action and try to project a public image of enticing women into the technology sector. I think this proves once again to use caution when ranting on a public website and step away from the keyboard in moments of anger. Respect each other and the internet will become a more harmonious place.

Mozilla’s official response to the incident is as follows:

“It’s been brought to our attention that there’s been anonymous postings to Reddit under the handle aoiyama that crossed a line from criticism to hate speech. There’s a lot to suggest that they’re a Mozillian [an employee]. Specifically, when I’m talking about crossing the line from criticism to hate speech, I’m talking about when you start saying that ‘someone’s kind doesn’t belong here and we’ll all be happy when they’re gone.’ If that’s not hate speech, it’s pretty damn close and we’re not going to walk that line as Mozilla. So if, and when, we identify who this person is and if they are an employee, they will be fired. Either way, they are not welcome to continue to participate in the Mozilla project, so if you cross that line, I’m asking you now: please leave, because you’re not welcome.”

The Big Reddit Quarantine Begins

Since new CEO Steve Huffman took the reins at reddit, its community has been bracing itself for a promised purge of the site’s “dark side”, where users engage in discussion and activity related to, let’s say, ‘taboo’ subjects. And so, it has begun, but in a far more humane manner than was anticipated. Rather than ban the edgier subreddits, they have instead been ‘quarantined’; effectively, groups such as /r/gore, /r/CuteFemaleCorpses, and /r/SpaceDicks are now locked away as subscription entities.

So, what does that mean? We’ll let reddit itself explain:

Reddit’s content policy update was implemented two weeks ago with the censoring of a handful of violence-inciting racist groups. The policy has been increasing in magnitude over the last two weeks, and is set to continue indefinitely.

The quarantined subreddits will continue to exist, but reddit will essentially pretend that they don’t, so that new users don’t accidentally stumble upon them.

Quelle surprise, some users are not happy:

While others are happy to compromise:

While most of reddit’s “dark side” has been sent to the naughty step, there are a handful of truly offensive subreddits that have been ejected from the premises entirely. The hateful subreddits /r/GasTheKikes and /r/KillingWomen – amongst a number of other aggressively racist, misogynistic, and homophobic groups – are now subject to outright bans.

Spectacular Real Life Control Panel For a Computer

When you think you have seen it all, some genius arrives with an innovative implementation which completely re-imagines a function. This is the case for a Redditor by the name of “Smashcuts” sounds like a cross between Mario Bros and a hairdressers, who has built a fully operational, DIY overhead IRL control panel that has a hundred knobs, switches and buttons that can activate all kinds of actions.

Below is a selection of screenshots from Imgur, it is stunning and also could be defined as a work of art, the details which have been devised are exceptional.  As you can see, the control panel is divided into square sections which includes a green ‘Main Systems’ section and controls for functions for example OS shortcuts like Open, Save and Close.

Below is a close up of the controls which connects to OS shortcuts, the lighting scheme is reminiscent of a Sci Fi film.

Below is a close up of the Green “Main Section”, which activates different programs which are used most often, the top row opens Chrome, Photoshop, Premiere, After Effects and iTunes.

Below is a close up of another control panel, The top four switches control the control panel (brightness, backlight etc.) Bottom controls the panel’s AI mastermind override which is currently broken.

Not all switches and artwork are functional but rather for more aesthetic purposes, for example, there is a blue illuminated battleship; this unfortunately does not destroy the empire. This is quite simply spectacular, the thought which has gone into the design process must have been painstaking. By all means check his Imgur page, it conveys the building process which is fascinating and as you would expect, very complicated.

John McAfee Calls McAfee Antivirus “One of the Worst Products on the ****** Planet”

WARNING: This article references materials that contain explicit Language

We all have (or should be using) an antivirus program (or several for some people). For some people its Norton, a company which seems interested in putting a faraday cage in your trousers, or maybe even Avast, who recently revealed that the android “factory reset” fails to wipe all your saved personal information. Either way the creators of this software and their software ranges from “divine saviors of computers” to “the embodiment of a technological devil”. One of the more well-known programs is McAfee, however, it would seem its creator (who has not been involved with the software for many years) feels his program falls into the latter category.

Speaking on his official “I am John McAfee AMA” on Reddit, McAfee was talking about the video he released two years ago in which he helped guide people on how to uninstall the software, if you are interested in the video then please read our article about it here or check out the video below. Warning, NSFW language and themes throughout.

In his AMA (ask me anything), mcafee-ama posted stating:

“…. Also McAfee is one of the worst products on the ****** planet”
Original post can be found here: (Warning: explicit langauge)

John McAfee is not one to shy away from the spotlight, mostly for the wrong reasons, ranging from being arrested for charges of being drunk and in the possession of a firearm, to speaking out and asking Google users to “wise up” when it comes to their privacy and confidentiality.

McAfee certainly doesn’t live a calm life, so what will he do next?

Russia Threatens to Ban Reddit

First it was gay emojis and memes. Now mother Russia is threatening to ban the whole of reddit, unless the site’s administrators start banning marijuana-growing tutorials.

Roskomnadzor, Russia’s Federal Service for Supervision for Telecom, Information Technologies, and Mass Communications, posted to social networking site VKontakte that it had been in touch with reddit’s administrators, asking them to take down posts related to growing cannabis, in line with a request from the Federal Drug Control Service of Russia. Since reddit has not responded to the request, Roskomnadzor is “preparing” to add the site to its ever-growing list of prohibited sites in Russia.

“If anyone has contacts with the reddit administration, ask them to check their email for letters from Roskomnadzor, otherwise, due to technological features, many operators may block the whole site,” the VKontakte post reads.

Roskomnadzor’s list of banned sites is quite the eclectic collection, ranging from Internet Wayback Machine, the official Jehovah’s Witness site, and a Facebook group supporting Russian state critic Alexey Navalny. The blacklist is designed to “protect” the Russian people from sites and pages that contain child pornography, extremist content, content subject to a gag order, or materials that advocate drugs or suicide. At some point or another during its lifespan, reddit has ticked every box.

Redditor Believes His NZXT Chassis is Counterfeit – Hilarity Ensues

Building your brand new PC from scratch can create some headaches at times, especially if you haven’t done it so many times before. Sometimes it’s compatibility issues or not having the right connections in the right lengths and other times you just can’t figure out the orientation. At least the last part was an issue for a Redditor who thought he had been ripped off and sold a fake NZXT Phantom chassis. “It looks different than any other NXZT Phantom case, even on the pictures from the website I bought it from,” he noted.

He took photos of the case and uploaded them to the internet in order to get to the root of the trouble; he even contacted NZXT support. After posting the trouble on Reddit and asking his “brothers” to help him out with identifying if it was a fake or not, the situation quickly got cleared up and there wasn’t anything wrong with the case at all! It was simply turned 90 degrees and was standing on the back instead of the bottom.

Most people would be ashamed and try to hide under a rock for a couple of years followed by a name and residence change, but Maxiimus1 as the Redditor calls himself takes it as it is and left the Reddit post online. “I feel like such an idiot,” he wrote in his edit. “You are allowed to downvote me to oblivion and make fun of me.” That’s the right way to deal with it and he deserves some respect for that and he surely deserves a thanks for one of the most entertaining post and replies in a while.

I also think that everyone who unpacked an NZXT Phantom case for the first time, stood there and looked at it for a couple of seconds before picking it up and turning it a couple of times to find the right way to place it; most of us usually notice it by the fact that the IO area doesn’t go into the ground.

Controversy is Good For Reddit’s Business

Rumours of reddit’s death have been greatly exaggerated, it seems. The great exodus, predicted after the user revolt over former CEO Ellen Pao and objections toward new CEO Steve Huffman’s plans to clean up reddit’s “dark side”, never happened. In fact, the statistics show that reddit’s usership has increased by a factor of nine in the last month.

In May and June, reddit’s unique views were 175 million and 177 million, respectively. By July, in the wake of Pao’s exit and Huffman’s new hard-line approach, brought 195 million unique viewers for the month.

Last month, Pao was forced to resign by the reddit community as penance for the firing of Victoria Taylor, the site’s former head of community who was responsible for arranging the famous AMA posts. It was later revealed that Alexis Ohanian, reddit’s co-founder and board member, was the one responsible for Taylor’s sacking, not Pao. Former Chief Executive Yishan Wong also revealed in a candid post that, contrary to popular belief, Pao did not wish to implement large-scale censorship on the site, a policy that new CEO Huffman certainly is in favour of, ironically. Be careful what you wish for.

Rather than drive users away, though, it seems reddit’s soap opera has attracted a record number of rubber-neckers. It will be interesting, now that the controversy has died down, whether the site will be able to sustain those numbers across August.

Naive Man Upgrades PC To Windows 10 And Has A Photo Problem

By photo problem you are probably imagining the upgrade to Windows 10 has deleted some unlucky person’s valuable images of life’s memories. Oh no, this is much less captured family time and more caught out with NSFW pics.

A Reddit user which goes by the username FalloutBoS, started the process of upgrading his PC to the shiny new Windows 10 OS, he went to bed satisfied in the knowledge that he would have a pleasant surprise the next morning. He had a surprise all right, when he was abruptly woken by his slightly confused wife who questioned why there were blue images rotating on his desktop.

Imagine that, the love of your life walks past the PC for only to then see nude images, this man is unlucky. So how did this happen? It looks as if yet another controversial feature has befallen him, which is Win 10 fetches images from a users default pictures gallery before playing them on repeat on the screen.

The gentleman stated the following

“Woke up to wife asking why I set it to rotate all my adult images right on the desktop view. I have no idea how to shut that feature off and that computer is staying shut down until I do.”

Let this tale be a lesson to any individuals who may have NSFW images in their default picture folder, if you don’t want your girlfriend/wife/boyfriend/husband to confront you about it, then move them, FalloutBos wife apparently understood, your other half might not be so sympathetic, if he/she is, then you will in all probability be together forever.
