Facebook Considering Monetization of Posts Using “Tip Jars”

A Facebook user survey distributed this week has shown the social media giant is looking at ways for users to be able to profit from their posts according to The Verge. Some of the features being considered that would allow for the monetization of posts or the ability to promote your posts include a tip jar, branded content and even the ability to take a cut of Facebook’s ad revenue from your posts. Another idea that users were asked for their opinion was a “call to action” button which would let followers make donations and a “sponsor marketplace” which would allow users to match themselves with providers of related advertisements.

Currently, Facebook includes no avenues for individual users to earn money from the posts they make on Facebook, although publishers have been able to sell advertisement space inside of their Instant Articles format and brand sponsored posts are able to be shared on verified pages. Facebook is also testing new (and possibly intrusive) ways to introduce ad revenue into content on the site.

A number of social sites already offer ways in which users and content creators can profit from the ad revenue that their content generates, with YouTube allowing channel owners to earn money based on the views of monetized videos and the game streaming service Twitch partnering with popular streamers to allow them to earn money from subscriptions, running advertisements and merchandise sales. It is likely that Facebook, which values itself on real-time sharing, has seen the success of these programs and wants to offer their users a chance at earning money in the hopes it will draw more people to post higher quality content on the site.

When you consider the huge valuations of social media sites, the fact that very few of their users are paid for the content that contributes to it, it makes sense to offer some kind of reward schemes for top contributors, lest they migrate to other platforms in time. Whether this move to monetization could improve or worsen Facebook remains to be seen, as the plans are only conceptual. The questions regarding monetization are just a small portion of the survey focusing on users use of their profile pages, what they share and the makeup of their friends on the site.

Steam Controller Hopes to Allow Disabled Father to Play Skyrim

Video games can do a lot of things. You can play them with your friends while sitting on the sofa, or play with people on other side of the world. You can sit down at a party and sing your favourite songs while your friends play the music, or conquer an entire world on your own. One thing that some people find rewarding is playing games with the ones they care about the most, be that their friends or family. Eli Jewett is one of the latter, playing games with his dad who recently wanted to play Skyrim. There was one problem, though, his dad can only use his right hand.

Chris Hepburn has a post that is known for allowing people to request a controller mapping for certain games. Jewett saw this and requested a one-handed profile for Skyrim using the Steam controller. Hepburn was asked by GameSpot why he decided to take up this request and Detailed in the video below, the end result was a combination of motion and physical controls such as mapping movement to the tilt sensor while looking around was done via the right track pad.

“The son wanted his dad to play Skyrim! Enough said. Who wouldn’t want their dad to share Skyrim with them?” asked Hepburn. “We’ve all played Skyrim and this guy’s dad wants to try it. Had to make it at that point.”

While he has yet to test the profile Jewetts father launched Skyrim after being told about the creation hopefully a game he will be able to enjoy soon. Hepburn has stated that he would go back and change the profile over and over until Jewetts dad is comfortable with it, while Hepbrun is going to take on more profile requests, such as one for a woman who has arthritis and cannot use her thumbs. “Valve are the real innovators here. They gave us the tools to help each other” Hepbrun added.

This is the gaming community that I enjoy being a part of, one where you not only enjoy playing with your friends and family but are also willing to help out others so they can share in that enjoyment.

99% Of Women Profiles On Ashley Madison Were Fake

Oh, well I am not surprised but here we go, the well reported data breach on dating website Ashley Madison has exposed a wealth of information including a huge proportion of fake profiles.

Impact Team who were the group behind the hack, announced that it was releasing the information in part because Ashley Madison had duped consumers over the male to female account ratio on its website. At the time, the hackers claimed that 90-95% of the accounts on Ashley Madison were male with “thousands” of fake female profiles. It turns out the group were correct but underestimated the figures ever so slightly.

After careful scrutiny of the data in order to verify that 5.5 million female accounts were indeed fake, the information reveals that many accounts were created with a single localhost IP of 127.0.0.1. This was along with thousands of accounts which listed AshleyMadison.com email address as their primary contact point including organized accounts which stated 100@ashleymadison.com, 200@ashleymadison.com and so on.

Another piece of information which is certainly revealing conveys the last log in date a user has checked their inbox, this data is logged by the site even if the user only checks it once. It reveals a huge 20,269,675 men checked their messages while only 1492 woman viewed their inbox. Well, just look at those odds, even Ray Winstone cannot market this appealingly for Bet 365.

I do feel these sites offer the majority a false sense of possibility with reality far less forgiving; it conveys the level of information which can be harvested by third parties if not stored correctly. The irony to all this is that Ashley Madison offered a platform where people could cheat on their other half which is deplorable, yet far less possible than previously thought considering the number of fake profiles.

Add a Rainbow To Your Facebook Picture

The Internet responds in a myriad of ways to current events, from reactions to England winning the world cup for the second, sorry, could not press enter without laughing, to topical memes which serve up a withering critique of current culture. This time around both Google and Facebook have graphically responded to the legalisation of gay marriage in all 50 states with a fun and colourful display of unity.

On a side note, just to veer off topic for a second, I seemed to be under the impression that the USA has 51 states, apparently not, it’s actually 50 states. Back to the topic in hand now, to illustrate the Supreme Court’s decision to bring to an end the ban on same-sex marriage, Facebook have released a feature that will turn your profile picture into a colourful image. If you are logged into Facebook and then click this link, a rainbow will be overlaid onto your Facebook profile pic.

Google has also added this feature within the search engine, if you type “gay marriage” without the quote marks, you should be greeted to a rainbow heart and other colourful artwork. Mark Zuckerberg has released a statement in support of this decision with the following comments which were written on his Facebook profile, go figures that.

“Our country was founded on the promise that all people are created equal, and today we took another step towards achieving that promise. I’m so happy for all of my friends and everyone in our community who can finally celebrate their love and be recognized as equal couples under the law. We still have much more to do to achieve full equality for everyone in our community, but we are moving in the right direction.”

I think this is a clever but fun way to make a bold statement in support of equal marriage rights for same-sex partners.

Tinder Adds Instagram Support so You Can Share Your Most Private Videos with Strangers

Tinder made quite a bit of progress lately, especially on its subscription side. However, the Facebook integration doesn’t seem to be enough for the company, which now aims to roll out a new update that adds Instagram support to its growing ‘swipy’ world.

The latest Tinder update is said to let you swipe through Instagram photos, with support of up to 34 photos and videos for each account. The company has even integrated so as to redirect you to the person’s Instagram profile upon tapping a picture, providing he or she has the profile public.

Instagram is said to provide Tinder users with a better overview of how socially connected you are to the person you are about to swipe. Up until now, the Facebook integration showed you the friends you have in common with the person you are viewing, but it wasn’t enough to get you a match. Tinder aims to bring a more detailed feature that lets you have a glimpse of who that person is and hopes to bring better matches in the future.

Tinder has also announced that the integration will be available for both free and pro subscribers, so if you either use the app just for a laugh or hope to find your other half, you can still fiddle with the company’s latest feature. But let’s be honest about it, who uses Tinder as a professional dating app? Do you?

OkCupid Follows in Facebook’s Footsteps, Admits to be Experimenting on Humans

After the Facebook fiasco and their little research on human behaviour, it seems that its time for OkCupid, the online dating service, to do the same. The service is said to have admitted that it too had manipulated what is shows users in order to see what would happen.

Three examples of the experiment are said to have been posted by OkCupid’s co-founder, Christian Rudder, in an article entitled “We Experiment On Human Beings!”. It can be viewed over at the site’s OkTrends blog.

“OkCupid doesn’t really know what it’s doing,” said Rudder. “Neither does any other website. It’s not like people have been building these things for very long, or you can go look up a blueprint or something. Most ideas are bad. Even good ideas could be better. Experiments are how you sort all this out.”

It is said that when talking about Facebook and its experiment that involved manipulating users’ news feeds in order to study their real-life reactions, Rudder stated the following:

“Guess what, everybody,” he says, “if you use the internet, you’re the subject of hundreds of experiments at any given time, on every site. That’s how websites work.”

The first experiment is said to have happened in January 2013, when the website removed all user images and called it “Love is Blind Day”. The user count is said to have been low on that day, but those who were online proved to have responded 44% more often to messages.

The second one involved the user’s rating, a score given to them by other users. Rudder attempted to see how much the user’s profile image counts when rating someone by presenting a small subset of users with their profile text hidden. He stated to have found that only 10% of the typical user’s score is based on what they write about themselves, while 90% is based on the profile image.

The final experiment is stated to have been more “controversial”, having OkCupid tweak with the users’ “match” rating. It is basically used to show people’s “compatibility” rating based on the information given by the user.

“In the back of our minds, there’s always been the possibility: maybe it works just because we tell people it does. Maybe people just like each other because they think they’re supposed to? Like how Jay-Z still sells albums?” Rudder stated

OkCupid has then tweaked the compatibility ratings for most of its users and noticed how many single messages led to a full conversation. The experiment noted that most users do not talk to each other due to the low compatibility ration, for example 20% or 30%. Change those to a 90% and it seems that ‘weird things happen’.

All in all, what Facebook and OkCupid did are far from ethical, but it still underlines a solid truth in all. When information is available on the internet, we tend to trust it more than we trust ourselves. Do we really need a webpage or app to tell us who to love or what to believe in?
