EVGA Bundles Grey Goo With Select Power Supplies

Getting free games bundles with your graphics card or motherboard isn’t something new, that has been around for quite a while now, but it is a rarity that we also see games being bundled with power supplies. In fact, I can’t remember it happening before myself. However, that is exactly what EVGA has done as the have gone ahead and bundled Grey Goo Definitive Edition with select power supplies.

The game isn’t just bundled with a one or two power supplies, this offer applies to pretty much the entire 80Plus Gold, Platinum, and Titanium rated power supply lineup, as you can see in the list below. Ranging from entry level 550W models all the way up to impressive 1600W models, the offer is made available for most people.

Grey Goo is a real-time strategy (RTS) game that combines classic strategy mechanics and a balanced combat system with an emphasis on large-scale decision-making. It puts you at the centre of a tactical struggle for survival – and ultimately, control of Ecosystem 9.

The game features both a single-player campaign as well as multiplayer action with your friends and enemies. In single player, you have the option to play one of three factions: Humans, Beta, and the Goo. The Humans are the masters of defensive architecture while the Beta only is described as a proud and versatile alien race. The Goo is probably what most people will want to play tho as that is the enigmatic and highly mobile life form made up of, yes you guessed it, grey goo. In the multiplayer part, you also get a fourth faction, the disruptive and unpredictable Shroud.

As always with this kind of offer, there are a few conditions to get the free game. You’ll have to have purchased the power supply on March the 25th, 2016 or later from an authorized reseller. You’ll also need to register the purchased product to get the game key. Once you’ve followed the redeem guide, you’ll get a game code emailed that you then can activate through your Steam app as you most likely have done with so many games before.

All the fine-print and the links to redeem your game can be found on the official mini-site for this Grey Goo offer.

Thermaltake Unveiled Latest Toughpower DPS G Platinum Series

Thermaltake unveiled its latest power supplies in the Toughpower DPS G Platinum series and it isn’t the average run-of-the-mill power supply either. It is an 80 Plus Platinum certified and digitally controlled power supply and it comes in three wattage sizes: 850W, 1050W, and 1200W.

The new Toughpower DPS G Platinum Series with the aid of the DPS G Software, DPS G PC APP 2.0, DPS G Smart Power Management Cloud 1.0, provides the system with not only clean and stable power, but also three intelligent platforms that allows users to monitor and record the status of power consumption, voltage distribution, and the electricity cost for advance usage. The SPM Platform also helps to save energy, reduce CO2 emission, and in turn protect the environment.

The power supplies are built with a massive single +12V rail, high-quality Japanese capacitors, and has a 140mm ultra quiet fan with smart fan control. It is fully modular, allowing you to connect just the cables you need for a clean and organized system build. It also features all the protections you’ll want such as Over Current, Over Power, Over Voltage, Under Voltage, Over Temperature, and Short-Circuit protection.

It is also a power supply that should last you a long time as it comes with a minimum mean time before failure of 120,000 hours, which equals to 5000 days or almost 14 years. Thermaltake knows they got a great product on their hand and it shows. This is also reflected in the 7-year warranty that the PSUs are backed by.

SilverStone Releases World’s Smallest Platinum Certified PSUs

The times where a powerful PC system needed to take up a lot of space is long gone, at least when we think in home use scenarios and not server farms. Size is one thing and we like to keep it small and out of the way most of the times, we just want the systems to work and provide their services, preferable as efficient as possible. With these two things in mind, SilverStone created the new Strider Platinum series of power supplies that are the world’s smallest 80 Plus Platinum full-modular ATX power supplies.

SilverStone offers three new versions in the Strider Platinum series, a 550W model (ST55F-PT), a 650W model (ST65F-PT), and a 750W model (ST75F-PT). All three units come with the same benefit of only being 140mm deep, that is quite a bit smaller than usual. The fully modular cables allow for a neat setup where you only connect what you actually need. The highly efficient PSUs are 24/7 certified for continuous power output with an operating temperature of 40 degrees Celcius.

The single +12V rail is class-lading and the PSUS have a strict plus minus 3% voltage regulation and low ripple and noise. Speaking of noise, not electronical but audible, the ultra-silent 120mm fan with intelligent semi-fanless operation keeps that down too.

The new SilverStone Strider Platinum PSUs will be available on October the 19th for an MSRP of $131.88, $143.88, and $165.48 respectively, exclusive VAT.

be quiet! Dark Power Pro 11 550W Power Supply Review

Introduction & Packaging

It’s no secret that be quiet! make some of the best PSUs money can buy, we’ve seen time after time that they can deliver great looking and performing products. A few months ago, we took a look at one of their latest and greatest units, the Dark Power Pro 11 1200W PSU and it was certainly impressive, offering excellent power delivery, whisper quiet performance and gorgeous aesthetics, but what if you don’t need huge amounts of power for your system, but you still want a very high-quality unit? That’s where the new Dark Power Pro 11 low-wattage models come into play.

“The Dark Power Pro 11 is the most advanced high-end power supply from be quiet!. Massive power, Overclocking Key, which can switch between quad and single-rail operation, an almost inaudible performance due to a be quiet! SilentWings 3 fan and – for us – the highest efficiency certification in the form of 80PLUS Platinum are some of the features of the new Dark Power Pro-models.” – be quiet!

At our disposal today, we have the Dark Power Pro 11 550w, offering more than enough power for a single-GPU system, workstation, office system or HTPC. Don’t think lower wattage means less features though, as you’ll still find 80 Plus Platinum efficiency, semi-modular cables and premium grade build-quality throughout.

Packaging and accessories

The box is nicely designed and features the typical black design we see on all be quiet! products. What is interesting is seeing the “high-end” branded together with 550W, as lower wattage units are rarely high-end.

Around the back, a quick run-down of all the included cables and features, but we will, of course, take a much closer look at these in a moment.

In the box, you’ll find the AC power cable, user manual, OC key, fan cables and a collection of cable ties. The OC key is a nice touch, as it can be mounted in a space PCI-e expansion slot, giving you a physical switch for toggling between single and multiple rails on the PSU; not everyone will need such a thing, but it’s nice to have. The other welcome addition is the fan extension cables, as the PSU can have fans connected directly to it.

ASUS Announces the Poseidon Platinum GTX 980Ti

Something that we know about the GTX 980Ti range is the completely absurd performance that this one graphics card can deliver. When the sub-vendors were allowed to customise the card, the performance increased and the variations are so diverse that choosing only one to buy is a difficult choice.

Today ASUS has announced the Poseidon Platinum GTX 980Ti, adding onto the pre-existing RoG range is the Hybrid cooled monster. Based on the GM200 core, it will come with a factory boost OC clock speed of 1228MHz. This might not be the highest clock speed of all of the GTX 980Ti’s on the market, but something we have come to learn is that a strong core with a lower clock speed can outperform a poorer core and higher clock speed.

The cooling design features a unique, dust free dual fan design with a built-in water block for future cooling upgradeability; named DirectCU H2O. The design features the most common G¼-inch threaded fittings for the best possible compatibility with most of today’s water cooling products. On standard air cooling, you can expect up to 5°c lower temperatures and up to 30°c better when under water.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YnDpSlx6q68

The new manufacturing process, Auto Extreme, has almost completely removed humans from the production line, coupled with Super Alloy Power II components, this adds up to one efficient, powerful and high quality graphics card that is set to last.

Along with the physical features, ASUS will also include a download to the in-house GPU Tweak II; probably one of the best GPU tuning software options available and a 1-year subscription to X-Split Gamecaster premium. Based at $99 for the year, this software allows gamers to easily stream and/ or record gameplay via a lite in-game overlay. Along with those, ASUS also bundles in a 15-day World of Warships premium account with an exclusive Diana Cruiser ship code.

I can’t wait to test one of these and compare it against the other GTX 980Ti’s we’ve had in. Are you still torn about a new graphics card purchase? Let us know in the comments.

Thank you to TechPowerUp for providing us with this information.

Seasonic Platinum 1050W Modular Power Supply Review

Introduction & Packaging

Seasonic is one of the most respected PSU manufacturers in the world, not only do they create their own premium grade units, but they’re also one of the most popular manufacturers used by a range of PSU brands around the world. Time and time again we’ve seen them deliver flawless designs, incredible performance and a whole lot more, so we’re very excited to have one of their latest and greatest units on our test bench today.

The Seasonic 1050W packs a huge amount of power, making it an ideal choice for overclockers and those with multiple graphics cards in their systems. It comes with premium grade components throughout and this helps it operate at 80 Plus Platinum efficiency, meaning it’ll cost you less on your electricity bill to run vs Gold, Bronze and below rated PSU units.

Packed with features such as Ultra Stable Voltage, a Hybrid Silent Fan Control which allows for 0RPM operation at low loads and Dual Copper Bars, the 1050W Platinum sounds like a premium choice for system builders.

As you can see, the 1050W hits all the usual requirements of a modern PSU, can operate between 100-240v AC and features all the protection features you would expect.

The packaging is nicely designed, keeping in theme with the rest of the Seasonic range.

Around the back, a quick run down of what 80 Plus Platinum efficiency is, as well as a run down of the major features; which we’ll take a look at in a moment.

In the box, you’ll find a durable storage bag that houses all the modular PSU cables and the 3-pin power cable.

There’s also an assortment of plastic and velcro cable ties to aid with cable management, an owners manual and with this unit, a UK 3-pin power cable.

Enermax DIGIFANLESS 550W Power Supply Review

Introduction & Packaging

The latest Enermax power supply landed in the eTeknix officer recently and while I admit, it can sometimes be difficult to get excited about a power supply, I am very much so about this one. The DIGIFANLESS packs two important features, as the name would suggest; it’s fanless and it is digital. Fanless power supplies are an incredible addition to your system, especially if you’re trying to build a completely silent rig, as the removal of the fan means you’ll never hear a single noise from the unit and that’s certainly no bad thing!

Despite being passively cooled, the DIGIFANLESS still promises to churn out two very impressive figures. The first is that it’ll run up to 550W, which is more than enough for a single GPU system and a powerful CPU. The second is that it will deliver 80 Plus Platinum rated levels of efficiency. Let’s just recap, digital monitoring, passive cooled silent performance, 80 Plus Platinum, 550W of power and if that’s not enough to open your eyes wide, he’s the classic “but that’s not all” sales pitch. It also has fully modular, has individually braided premium grade cables, all Japanese capacitors, is rated to run 24/7 and comes with a 5-year warranty! Enough dancing around, let’s jump right in and take a closer look!

The packaging is really nicely designed, giving a good rundown of the specifications and I’m already getting a nice “premium” vibe here.

Around the back, a nice run down of all the cables, the digi features, the high-quality capacitors and more.

Normally the packaging isn’t something I talk about too much, but the DIGIFANLESS was so well packaged, I just had to take a quick picture.

In the box, you’ll find the mains power cable, the digital link cable, the owner’s manual and a protective storage bag.

Seasonic’s Platinum 1200 Watt Power Supply Assists In World Record

Seasonic Electronics Company was founded 40 years ago and prides itself on research and development with the aim of providing consumers with cutting edge technology. This is the case with the Platinum 1200 power supply which has assisted in the achievement of a new world record in conjunction with Dancop.

For those not familiar, Dancop is a German overclocking pro team who have achieved a new World Record within CPU and GPU benchmarks as well as finishing first place within numerous other benchmark categories at the global rankings.  These are overseen by HWBOT who are an organization that monitors professional competitive overclocking results.

So what makes this Power Supply exceptional? The Platinum 1200 version boasts among other features Dual Copper Bars which carry a higher current which is much more effective than the traditional copper strips. A No Negative Voltage Tolerance which implements an even stricter voltage regulation which entirely eliminates negative deviations, this is with the aim of keeping voltage 80% tighter than Intel specifications and 66 % tighter than top reviewers recommend. The icing on the cake is in the form of Seasonic’s 7 year warranty which provides the piece of mind to consumers.

Seasonic has also been awarded the European Hardware Awards for 2015, this prestigious award was for their Platinum Power Supply series.

SuperFlower Leadex Platinum 750W & Titanium 1000W Power Supply Review

Introduction & Packaging

SuperFlower is one of the leading names in the PSU market, with a wide range of products that cater to a wide range of budgets, although their specialty certainly seems to be in the high-end market, where they offer an impressive range, both in terms of aesthetics and performance for the enthusiast and prosumer markets. Today, I’ll be taking a look at not one, but two of the latest SuperFlower power supplies; the Platinum rated 750W and the Titanium rated 1000W.

Platinum and Titanium rated efficiencies are both very impressive, especially given that many consumers rarely shop above 80Plus Gold. The end result from these higher ratings is that the PSUs should be extremely efficient and could potentially save you some money on your electricity bill in the long run; which is no bad thing. This isn’t a head-to-head “which is best” review, as they’re both spec’d to have their own strength, one for the usual high-end user, the other is aimed a little more at the enthusiast side, so it’ll be interesting to see if spending that bit extra is really worth it overall.

Packaging and Contents – Leadex Platinum 750W

First up we have the 750W Platinum, which comes nicely packaged in a rather eye-catching box.

Around the back, we have a quick run down of all the major features; we’ll take a closer look at those in a moment.

In the box, you’ll find all the usual bits first; power cable, owners manual and some chassis mounting screws.

Super Rich Asteroid Expected To Pass By Earth

A mega rich asteroid is expected to pass Earth this Sunday (July 19th) which is both extremely large and is also the richest known asteroid is space. The gigantic rock is named UW-158 and has an approximate core weight of 90 million tonnes. To put this into perspective, Guinness World Records estimates that the heaviest structure on earth is the Parliament building in Bucharest which contains 700,000 tonnes of Steel and Bronze. Now here’s the rich part, the asteroid contains around $5 trillion dollars worth of platinum, which is enough to save Greece from defaulting again.

This asteroid is expected to travel to within 1.5 million miles of Earth; this does not pose any danger to us, OR DOES IT!!!! No it really doesn’t, as the Asteroid will be around 6 times the distance of the current length from Earth to the Moon. The coined Platinum asteroid will pass London at approximately 11pm on Sunday (19 July) and will hopefully be captured by an observatory in the Canary Islands.

I may have watched too much science fiction, but it makes you wonder if a genius in the future will devise a way to capture these resources. As the elements are becoming more and more limited, eventually we as beings will have to find new avenues with which to exploit.

Thank you fossbytes and Nasa for providing us with this information

Overclockers UK Offers Platinum Rated SuperFlower Leadex at Gold Pricing

Overclockers UK have recently launched a promotion on the highly acclaimed SuperFlower Leadex Power Supplies. During July, Platinum rated PSUs between 550-800 Watts will be sold at the recommended pricing for Gold efficiency units. Purchasing a high quality Power Supply is essential and protects your components during surges. Without mentioning any names, the high wattage unknown brand PSUs are frankly a hazard if you use any sort of load and it’s not worth taking the risk given the pricey nature of enthusiast-grade hardware. Superflower’s Leadex range is rather special and features a semi-passable DBB 130mm fan.  This means under low power draw which doesn’t dramatically increase the PSU’s core temperature, the fan will remain off.

These units are also fully modular, adopt an active PFC and utilize unique connectors which light up white when a cable is plugged in. This adds a certain flair to the design and makes it aesthetically pleasing. To evoke that sense of quality, SuperFlower even uses a fabric finish on the cabling. While it’s nowhere near a custom braid in its finish, I was pleasantly surprised by how flexible the cabling was.  Please note that you can only use cable extensions if you want to go down the custom braided route. SuperFlower’s LED modular technology is currently a propitiatory design and not compatible with any other aftermarket cables.  On another note, the Leadex Power Supplies are an excellent investment and backed by a 5 year warranty. Overclockers UK have even replaced their test systems with SuperFlower units which shows how reliable they are. Here is the full list of technical features:

If you haven’t heard of Superflower then it might surprise you that they manufacture the higher wattage EVGA Power Supplies which incorporate a 10 year warranty. I would like to see Superflower match this figure for piece of mind. Also, buying the product directly from Overclockers means the RMA process is done in the UK with a reputable retailer. This is very convenient as companies like Corsair require EU customers to send the PSU to the Netherlands RMA base.

EVGA Introduced Three New SuperNOVA P2 PSUs

EVGA has a lot of great hardware in their line-up already and there is no shortage of power supply choices either, but that doesn’t mean that more can’t be added and as such they’ve just introduced the 850 watt, 750 watt, and 650 watt versions of the award-winning P2 power supply series.

These new power supply units feature 80 Plus Platinum rated efficiency, and clean, continuous power to every component. These units get the most of out the power you supply them with, with 92% efficiency on 115VAC and 94% efficiency on 240VAC.

They are 100% modular and thereby allow you create the optimal cabling for your system, without any unnecessary cables cluttering your space.

The ECO mode ensures whisper silent operation where the fan completely stops under low and medium loads. It will only spin up when needed. The fan uses a double ball bearing system to ensure that it will last as long as the unit itself. And durability isn’t an issue with these power supplies as they are built with 100% Japanese capacitors and come backed by an amazing 10-year warranty.

Multi-GPU setups with Nvidia SLI and AMD Crossfire aren’t any problem either and everything is well protected thanks to the heavy-duty protections that include OVP (Over Voltage Protection), UVP (Under Voltage Protection), OCP (Over Current Protection), OPP (Over Power Protection), and SCP (Short Circuit Protection).

CRYORIG Presented IoT Enabled PSU

Let’s face it, most new PC hardware is just old shoes in new boxes, with improvements but still basically the same. But once in a while a new product comes along that has a nice twist and in this case it is a power supply.

CRYORIG displayed their newest idea at Computex, an Internet of Things (IoT) enabled power supply. The CRYORIG Pi is only a proof of concept so far and it is working and being demonstrated. The actual line of products is targeted for a release in 2016 with wattage ranging from 600 to +1000 Watts and 80 Plus Gold to Platinum certifications.

Internet of Things is gaining a lot of momentum at the moment and in short, these are smart devices that lets you control their actions from anywhere through remote connections. This is also the case for CRYORIGS new Pi power supply that will allow you to wake or shut your system down remotely thanks to the patent pending Zero Hassle Hardware Wake (ZHH Wake) technology that directly controls your motherboard.

Forgot to shut down your system before you left home, do it from anywhere. Need to boot up your extra file server and access some data from a remote location, no problem. Read in the news that a thunderstorm is closing on your home, shut down the system until it has passed. There are a lot of possibilities with this technology.

From this base CRYORIG’s Pi line can extend further capabilities such as fan speed control, energy usage recording and management, electric bill estimations as well as PSU health and deterioration reporting all directly to a mobile phone app.

This is a pretty cool and innovative idea, let us just hope that it will actually result in a final product and not end up never being released such as Captherms Multiphase cooler we saw at CES two years in a row – but never any actual product.

G.Skill Branches out and Showcase Ripjaws Power Supply

It looks like G.Skill wasn’t happy with just manufacturing great memory modules as they’re branching out into new areas. One of them is the power supply area and their first play looks quite impressive.

The new PSUs are dubbed Ripjaws just as the memory modules and you can expect the same kind of quality here. It starts out with the PS750G and the PS850G that both come with 80 Plus Gold certification and an efficiency rating of 90%. The two PSUs come with 750W and 850W respective and are fully modular units.

The PS850P and PS1250P are even better and they got an even higher efficiency rating. These two power supply units come with 80 Plus Platinum rating and an efficiency rating of 92%. Just as the two Gold models, these are also fully modular.

All Ripjaws series PSUs are made from with high-quality materials, such as 100% Japanese-made capacitors that ensure a high reliability and longer lasting lifetime.

The units are cooled by the unique automated G.SKILL ECO Optimized (GEO) Thermal Fan Control that also provides zero fan noise during low load operations. The used 140mm fans also use durable double ball bearings. Built-in protections include OVP, UVP, OCP, OPP, SCP, and OTP.

G.Skill did not announce a time of availability nor a price yet, but we will keep you updated with this information as they become available.

Corsair Displays Dominator Platinum Overclocking Capabilities at Computex

Computex 2015 – Corsair didn’t just have power supplies with them to Computex, they also brought along a test bench to showcase their DDR4 memory and what it is capable of achieving.

On display was Corsair’s Dominator Platinum DDR4 memory kits with a specified JEDEC speed of 2133MHz. But Corsair doesn’t stick to standards and applied their know-how onto the modules for maximum performance.

The system is running with an Intel Haswell-E CPU on a Gigabyte X99-SOC Champion motherboard and corsair clocked the DDR4 memory modules close to 4GHz: 3808.4GHz.

This speed was achieved with just air cooling on the modules.

be quiet! Dark Power Pro 11 1200W Power Supply Review

Introduction & Packaging

be quiet! are regarded as one of the best brands in the business, from their high-end CPU coolers, system fans and of course their power supplies, many of which are regarded as some of the coolest, quietest and best make products available today. Obviously, the quiet part is a given, with a name like be quiet!, if they made noisy products, it would be quite a disappointment. To achieve quiet performance, be quiet! uses high-quality components, premium grade build quality and design, so it’s no surprise that they’ve won many awards in the past; will we see a repeat performance today?

The Dark Power Pro 11 is the latest entry in their popular Dark Power Pro series. There are a few notable features to this power supply that make it stand out from the competition. First we’ve got the new SilentWings 3 135mm fan which features the new 6-pole motor, a redesigned bearing, the lowest startup rotational speed in the market (under 250FPM) and more; promising virtually inaudible performance and improved cooling. Of course, power delivery is improved too, with high-quality PFC capacitors, higher efficiency, improved voltage stability, regulation and more!

Packaging and Contents

As you can see, the be quiet! Dark Power Pro 11 comes in the usual packaging design of any other be quiet! product. Down the left side of the box, it’s marked “high-end”, although the words “80 Plus Platinum” and “1200w” are also strong indicators that this is a high-end/enthusiast focused product.

The Dark Power Pro 11 is semi-modular and comes with a hard-wired 24-pin, not big deal since literally all systems will need this cable and making it modular would only add to the cost. There are two CPU power cables, an 8-pin and a 4+4, Four SATA/Molex cables with FDD options. One of the more important cables, there are four PCIe cables, three with dual 6+2 connectors and a single 6pin PCIe cable. Finally, you’ll also find external fan connector cables, more on those in a moment, and the Overclocking Key add-on.

In the box, we found two power cables, one for EU and one for UK, although we expect this will differ based on region.

Included extras from left to right, are the fan adaptor cables, OC jumper, Overclocking Key switch, screws, cable ties, thumb screws and two Velcro cable ties.

Billionaire Wants to Start Mining the Moon in 2016

Could the Moon and its resources be used to aid humanity in the future? Naveen Jain, co-founder and chairman of California-based company Moon Express, explains that their plan is to explore the Moon for “resources of benefit to humanity”.

The Moon is known for its vast riches like gold, cobalt, iron, palladium, platinum, tungsten and Helium-3, a gas that can be used in future fusion reactors to provide nuclear power without radioactive waste. However, who ‘owns the Moon’? The United Nations’ 1979 Moon Agreement, states that “the Moon and its natural resources are the common heritage of mankind”, while UN’s Outer Space Treaty, states that “the exploration and use of outer space shall be carried out for the benefit and in the interests of all countries and shall be the province of all mankind”.

“Today, people look at diamonds as this rare thing on Earth,” Jain said. “Imagine telling someone you love her by giving her the Moon.”

NASA is apparently working with Moon Express to develop robotic spacecrafts. Moon Express is said to have signed an agreement to take over the decommissioned Space Launch Complex 36 at Cape Canaveral. The launch pad will be used for Moon Express’s lander development and flight-test operations.

“Clearly, NASA has an amazing amount of expertise when it comes to getting to the Moon, and it wants to pass that knowledge on to a company like ours that has the best chance of being successful,” Jain said.

Also, Moon Express has been granted a $1 million prize from Google for taking part in the Google-sponsored Lunar X Prize, organised by the X Prize Foundation, that will award $30 million to the first company that lands a commercial spacecraft on the Moon, travels 500 meters across its surface and sends high-definition images and video back to Earth before the end of 2016.

“The purpose is to show that for the first time, a company has developed the technology to land softly on the Moon,” Jain stated. “Landing on the moon is not the hard part. Landing softly is the hard part.”

Moon Express is said to further test its robotic spacecraft at the end of the month. The MX-1, its lander, is said to take off from the pad and go up and sideways before landing back on the pad. Should the test be successful, the MX-1 will be deemed ready to travel to the Moon.
