‘Pixels’ Copyright Notices Removed the Studio’s own Trailer

Pixels is an atrocious video game-themed movie and less endearing than a swarm of angry wasps. The film has gained notoriety for its sheer incompetence and it has received an astonishingly low score of 18% on Rotten Tomatoes. Not content with ruining the childhood memories of many iconic arcade games, Columbia Pictures has attempted to copyright the term “Pixels” and instigated a wave of copyright take-downs.

According to TorrentFreak, an anti-piracy group called Entura, hounded a number of independent filmmakers and removed their work from Vimeo. This includes a film from 2006 produced by NeMe, a non-profit organization and ‘Independent Museum of Contemporary Art’. In a forum post, the company said:

“Our NGO has just received a DMCA notice for a video we produced in 2006 entitled ‘Pixels’,”

 “The video was directed by a Cypriot film-maker using his own photos and sounds/music on a shoestring budget and infringes no copyright.”

“Please somebody do check the video in question and confirm for yourselves that it breaks no copyright laws and that it has nothing to do with the latest multi-million blockbuster which prompted this notification.”

Unfortunately, the video no longer exists and the URL displays a redirect error. Once again, this illustrates how absurd the DMCA algorithm is and how often it affects legitimate pieces of content which have nothing to do with an automatic copyright claim; the copyright legal framework is absurdly outdated and needs radical reform.

In a hilarious twist, a DMCA takedown actually removed Pixels’ trailer from the official account designed to market the film. This should serve as a lesson to companies who attempt to copyright a widespread term and bully content creators. The current DMCA policy is flawed and constantly abused to remove critical videos or fan-made creations containing a copyrighted music score. Columbia Pictures, Adam Sandler and Entura should be ashamed of themselves.

Nintendo “Pixels” Tweet Backfires

I would genuinely like to know who imagined a Pixels movie would be a worthwhile investment and was therefore taken seriously and not fired. I mean come on; it makes the world of gaming starring Adam Sandler as credible as Donald Trump becoming president. Just like to add an addendum here, if the business tycoon is sworn in after the US elections in 2016 and takes place as leader of the US, then no one remind me of this article.

Obviously Nintendo misread public opinion and thought it would be a great idea to tweet the following which is below.

Perhaps the company meant to change the words Donkey Kong with “person who came up with this idea”, keep hammer before erasing Pixels Movie and writing fingers instead. This Tweet plummeted to earth in flames with a selection of the following responses from irritated fans.

“@NintendoAmerica remove Adam Sandler and then I’ll watch.”

“@NintendoAmerica grab a hammer to smash your computer with when you start watching the trailer”

“@NintendoAmerica I hope this causes Nintendo to never lease out their properties again.”

“@NintendoAmerica You only had one job…”

“@NintendoAmerica how can you sleep at night”

I wonder what the target audience Nintendo had in mind while sketching the concept for this film. Hardcore gaming fans will despise it, casual gamers will not identify with it and non gamers simply won’t be interested in paying money to watch it. This is the problem with corporate companies; all too often business individuals will try to force a product on consumers with the “They will buy what we tell them to buy” attitude. Hollywood is all too often like McDonald’s, it delivers processed fast food goo which strips away any originality from the product before leaving an unrecognisable husk.

12K (Triple 4K Monitor) Graphics Test Bench Upgrade Review

Introduction


1080p, 1440p, 1660p, 2160p; just a random bunch of numbers with a ‘p’ after them can mean nothing to some people; however, to gamers it means a whole world of display quality goodness. For the last few years, 1080p (1920 x 1080 pixels) monitors have been the normal standard for a ‘decent’ gaming setup and what most graphics cards are tested at. Then we started moving up to higher resolutions such as 2560 x 1440p and 2560 x 1600p.

For some, this wasn’t enough; despite the pixel densities growing larger, as humans we wanted even more pixels. This resorted to users buying multiple monitors and connecting them one next to another and activating AMD ‘EyeFinity’ or NVIDIA ‘Surround’ to have an almost 180° viewing range. Even though the latter part of the pixel count didn’t change, this meant that monitor set-ups were hitting 5760 pixels wide by using three 1920 x 1080p monitors.

Then we move onto today, 1080p and 1440p has been surpassed by what has now become the new ‘standard’ of gaming, 2160p, or 4K. At this resolution, even the most powerful of graphics cards can struggle to churn out the desired 60FPS which we have come to accept as the acceptable standard. So what about when you put three 4K monitors next to each other and ask for 11520 x 2160 of pixelated goodness (or 6480 x 3840 if you prefer your monitors in portrait mode.)

Before we go rushing into things, there are some issues regarding our particular test system. The provided AOC monitors (U2868PQU) has known issues with AMD graphics cards and 60Hz refresh rate. Symptoms can present themselves as minor screen flickering to a complete system freeze. This was made worse when trying to display at 11520 x 2160; however, after multiple tests, we found the issue was subdued by putting the monitors into Portrait mode. This isn’t the ideal gaming set-up, however, in the interest of bringing you the information; I endured the pain of a 2″ thick bezel between each monitor.

To get to the technical nitty gritty, a typical 4K monitor at 60Hz refresh rate can present 497 Million information pixels per second, so this set-up can present almost 1.5 Billion pixels per second; yes 1.5 BILLION. To put that into perspective, the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge has a screen size of 1440 x 2560 and a refresh rate of 60Hz; that works out to a mere 221 Million pixels per second in comparison.

LG Electronics Starts Promoting 8K UHD Displays

While 4K UHD displays haven’t even been adopted properly due to the high prices, lack of content and sufficient performance of graphics adapters, LG goes further ahead and begins promoting the next step in resolution, the 8K UHD.

LG has reminded in a new press release that it is working on releasing 8K UHD 7680 x 4320 pixels displays, namely the 98-inch Color Prime Ultra HDTV presented at CES 2015. The company has also stated that it has improved the brightness of its 55-inch 8K UHD IPS panel boasting a resolution of 7680 x 4320 and 500nit by implementing M+ panel technology, adding textures to the existing RGB sub-pixel structure.

The company did not state when it will start mass production of the displays, but Apple has announced that they will be revealing an iMac 8K later this year. If it is an all-in-one PC or a standalone display, it remains to be seen when Apple decides to reveal its product. At the same time, Microsoft’s Windows 10 has already confirmed it will support 8K resolution displays.

While 8K sounds great at this stage, the market still lacks content in 8K. Currently, the only place that streams 8K resolution is NHK in Japan and the Technical Research Institute of Korean Broadcasting System. Even major Hollywood studios shoot movies in 6K and it will be a while until they adopt the 8K standard. Nonetheless, LG seems to be very optimistic about the future of 8K.

We’re always seeing music videos, entire movies and nostalgic video games created in this unique style. Paul Robertson, creator of the Scott Pilgrim video game and Ivan Dixon have created this masterful reimagining of The Simpsons intro in psychedelic pixel art.

It comes with everything you know and love from the classic Simpsons intro, but with even more, including a spectacular ending. I don’t know about you, but I think an entire episode made in this style wouldn’t be such a crazy idea. If not that, a Simpsons video game like this would look just as good too.

Smartphone AMOLED Panels Said to be Cheaper than LCD in Two Years

LCD panels have been previously used in smartphones and are still being used in most smartphones today. However, the newest display technology on the market is the AMOLED panel, used in smartphones such as the Samsung Galaxy S5 or Note 3, providing improved image quality, but at a much higher price than the LCD panels.

Manufacturers still use the LCD panels in order to bring smartphones at a much cheaper price, having the AMOLED panel’s price at 10-20% higher than the LCD. In an example, it is said that a 5-inch 1080 x 1920 pixels AMOLED panel is said to be 16% more expensive than the LCD counterpart. The good news is that as time passes, new technology becomes more demanding and prices drop. This is said to be the case for the AMOLED panel as well, having said that it will even out or be even cheaper than a LCD panel within two years.

“Until recently there have been few breakthroughs in the production of AMOLED displays, and the OLED industry seemed to be facing hard times,” said DisplaySearch’s Jimmy Kim. “If AMOLED costs fall below LCDs, as expected, it would lead to more opportunities for the OLED display industry, greater competition with LCD, and more choices for consumers.”

It is said that AMOLED production has recently started in China as well as Korea, with expectations for higher demand in the near future. Also, Korean manufacturer, Samsung, is said to have made significant achievements with its Quad HD 1440 x 2560 pixels screen by improving its grayscale and color accuracy, along with its brightness.

First Intel Core i3 Powered Chromebook Launched by Acer

Acer has just announced its release of the first 4th Generation Intel Core i3 CPU-powered chromebook, having it be the first company to release a chromebook device with similar performance ratios. The company has stated that the Acer C720, powered by the latter processor, is available in two models in order to provide customers with even faster and more responsive performance in multi-tasking workflows, while also providing a long battery life of up to 8.5 hours.

“Acer has been a leader in the Chromebook space and the new C720 based on 4th generation Intel Core i3 processors marks a new class of Chromebook with enhanced performance and battery life,” said Navin Shenoy, vice president and general manager of Intel Mobile Client Platforms Group. “As one of the most powerful Chromebooks on the market, the additional performance of Core i3 enables an extremely responsive experience while surfing multiple tabs of web pages. Students, families and business users will recognize the difference in how snappy the new Acer C720 is with Intel Core i3.”

The chromebooks are said to be ideal for families and students, as well as anyone requiring a simple and secure computer to work with. Having the devices running on Chrome OS, updates are said to roll in regularly, this making the latest features available right away to customers, including various layers of security such as data encryption and verified boot.

In terms of specs, both C720 models are said to have a 11.6-inch ComfyView HD screen with a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels, providing a clear and enjoyable image quality. High-Definition Holograms Might Hit The Market As Early As Next Year

When thinking about holograms, the first thought is about movies and science-fiction books where most have encountered the described technology for the first time, knowing it is just a fictional technological thought or concept. A startup company based in California tends to change this in a fairly small amount of time.

Ostendo is a company claiming to have solved the problems faced with hologram technology with the help of 5,000 PPI projectors measuring in at just about the size of a Tic Tac. The projectors are said to be able to control the colour, brightness and angle of individual beams of light across 1,000,000 pixels.

The company states that one chip is capable of delivering a usable image, but multiple chips are said to make room for even more complex and detailed images. Recent news indicate that The Wall Street Journal received a demo of this amazing technology, having it beam green dice spinning in the air.

Though the technology is still in its early stages, the company is said to deliver a chip capable of rendering 2D images on a surface of up to 48-inches at first. However, Hussein S. El-Ghoroury, the founder of Ostendo, stated that the company will be able to produce a chip capable of rendering “consistent” 3D objects in mid-air just months after the first chip’s release.

The technology did not go unnoticed, having already stirred the attention of some major handset manufacturers. Also, Ostendo is already looking forward into enhancing the product by reducing the pixel size to be able to boost the image resolution of its holograms, as well as thinking of ways to embed its technology into TVs, smartwatches and even tablets.

AOC Reveals First Affordable High-End 4K Resolution 28″ Display In London

The display industry has been cooking up new ways to improve our visual experience for some time now, from 3D features to Virtual Reality gear which isn’t quite ready just yet. However, the latter is not always useful in all areas, therefore the focus has been shifted to 4K technology it seems.

Whether designing, gaming or entertainment activities is in order, 4K technology will always do the trick. This might have sounded appealing to most in the past, but actually acquiring one meant selling an arm and a leg, since the prices were well into the thousands and even more in some cases. No, the price has drastically dropped to around £600 or less for most 4K displays which also meant a drop in specs, but not for AOC and their new 28″ display it seems.

AOC has revealed this first affordable gaming high-spec 28″ display, the U2868Pqu, at the PC Retail Bootcamp event in London. It features a 1ms response timing, which means users do not have to worry about ghosting problems at all, a 300 cd/m brightness rate for high contrast and a 60 Hz refresh rate. These features can be found on its 3840 x 2160 pixels resolution, making it a must-have item when it comes to enthusiastic gamers or even designers.

In terms of connectivity, the U2868Pqu comes with Dual-Link DVI, HDMI and Display Port support, having additional built-in speakers. However, gaming enthusiast will not be quite fond of the speakers, but nonetheless it comes as an additional support when in need of an output device.

In terms of a specific price, Amazon.co.uk has listed the display at a price of £537.60, giving it a release date set for the 1st of June.
