UK Expands Torrent Site Blacklist to Proxies

The UK High Court has quietly added a number of proxies and mirrors to its torrent site blacklist, restricting backdoor access to sites such as Torrentz and ExtraTorrent. Of course, ExtraTorrent has already launched a new mirror site to bypass the block.

The list of blocked torrent sites in the UK now exceeds one hundred, with enforcers constantly playing whack-a-mole in a desperate attempt to suppress every new torrent site URL that springs up. Last week’s ruling has seen torrentz-proxy.com, torrentsmirror.com, etproxy.com, extratorrentlive.com and extratorrentonline.com added to the blacklist.

“The High Court has declared that ExtraTorrent and Torrentz are operating unlawfully and infringing copyright. The Court Order which requires ISPs to block the sites also requires BPI to notify the ISPs of changes to the sites,” said a spokesperson for the BPI (British Phonographic Industry), one of many organisations that have obtained High Court orders against torrent sites to infringing upon copyrighted materials.

Fruitless efforts, though, since torrent sites are always one step ahead. “The connectivity issues were totally solved after we launched a new mirror. It appears that all UK visitors are able to visit the website now as the traffic is back and still growing,” the ExtraTorrent team told TorrentFreak.

The full list of sites blocked to copyright infringement within the UK now reads:

Cadillac Video Rearview Mirrors Standard from 2016

From 2016 the Cadillac CT6 will feature video rearview mirrors as standard. The vehicle will be the first car to feature such technology on all models.

The camera will be of “high dynamic range” allowing drivers to see in all weathers delivering a “video feed [that] reduces glare and allows a crisper image in low-light situations, versus a traditional glass electrochromatic, or auto-dimming, rearview mirror.” The small display delivers quite a high resolution for its size and purpose, 1280 x 240 to be exact and it promises to bring a filed of view up to 4 times higher than standard mirrors. The company isn’t completely giving up on traditional mirrors however, drivers will still be able switch to a conventional mirror with handy little button.

Although this example is the first, this is something we can expect to see more often now since the US Government made it mandatory for all new cars to feature rearview cameras after 2018.

eBay Looking to Place Interactive Mirrors in Changing Rooms

eBay is looking to move themselves into the brick-and-mortar retail world, expressing interest in implementing mirrors into dressing rooms that will offer the customer suggested accessories and product browsing – all available through a touch screen. These screens are being installed as a trial at the Rebecca Minkoff store, seeing them follow a similar path to online retail giant Amazon – who of which are preparing a store opening in New York. eBay is part of a movement to make our retail habits more interactive, providing users with simpler options to pick and chose clothing and accessories, helping them save time and quite possibly helping these stores to turn some extra profits.

eBay’s head of innovation and new ventures, Steve Yankovich, commented: “So physical retail, a showroom, I think will never go away”. This statement regards eBay’s positioning on store-fronts capabilities and viability moving into the future.

This whole experience will be utilized through an app installed on the user’s phone, meaning that these screens will be able to utilize the persons purchasing history and further help them to choose their garments. Clothes in these stores will be connected to RFID tags, allowing these interactive mirrors to recognize not only the customer, but the clothes that they are sampling for purchase. This system will allow shoppers to attach their purchases and test fittings to their personal profile, allowing them to track their favorite styling and brands as they see fit.

Here’s hoping they install some kind of strong security system as there’s a seemingly large possibility of hackers utilizing the cameras installed in these mirrors for personal benefit in criminal fashion.

Google Chromecast Receives Support for Pirated Movies through Popcorn-Time

The beta software program dedicated to provide ‘free’ movies, Popcorn-Time, has apparently announced that its software is now Chromecast-compatible for Windows users, having stated that a Chromecast version update is also being worked on for Mac users.

The cheap Chromecast device is Google’s product that allows users to send video from the Chrome browser or Netflix/Youtube service to your TV. Having Google’s announcements of pending updates for the Chromecast device last month, which includes the ability to mirror anything on an Android device to a TV, it makes sense for audio and video software makers to target such devices.

However, Popcorn-Time is an open-source project launched this year. gaining popularity through its easy-to-use interface and free content available. The content itself is basically a collection of video torrent links, which apparently stream the selected movie or video directly onto your device. It is currently compatible with Windows, Mac and Android devices.

Google appears to have not responded immediately to the given news, but its action to take down the Popcorn Time android version from the Google Store within 24h of its launch can only mean that the company will not be thrilled with something like this either.
