TeamGroup’s M152 Is a Lot More Than Just a Flash Drive

Team Group released a new flash drive shortly before Christmas and at first, I totally skipped this news. I skimmed it and it all the M152 drive looked like was a clever but ordinary flash drive. It didn’t look much different then the TeamGroup M131 flash drive that we reviewed a while ago either. Today I came across it again and I had to find out why it was worth a press release. To my surprise, this is anything but an ordinary flash drive that will work on both your PC and Android OTG devices as it has a few extra smart-features that can come in very handy.

Let us first have a look at the basic specifications, altho they aren’t spectacular. We get a USB 2.0 and micro USB flash drive with a capacity of either 8GB, 16GB, or 32GB. The drive itself is only a nano-drive and won’t take up much space while the rest is the OTG adapter that also works with other USB devices such as keyboards and mice on OTG compliant Android devices. With a USB 2.0 interface, we’re limited to a theoretical max of 60MB/s, so the drive won’t break any speed records.

The really clever part of TeamGroup’s M152 is the built-in wireless capabilities and app support. Simply plug the drive into your PC and link it with your Android device in order to simply drag files from your computer and onto the Android device. You can also share the Android device screen onto your computer monitor and operate it fully from there. Answer calls, type text or play your favourite mobile game with the convenience of your PC with your mouse and keyboard.

This could be a really cool feature that I could see myself using on a daily basis. I hate having to grab my phone every time it wants something from me and with a device like the TeamGroup M152 I wouldn’t have to anymore.

Fusion Qi Wireless Charger With Apple Add-on Review

Introduction

We see all kinds of weird and wonderful products here at eTeknix HQ and while I’m no stranger to mobile devices or even wireless charging devices, this one is marketed with a twist that really caught my attention. The Qi Wireless Charger from Fusion is technically like any other Qi wireless charging system, so if you have a Qi compatible device, you can pop it on the base it provides, charge it and you’re good to go, review done, see you later.

OK, so there’s a lot more to it than that, a few add-ons that offer extra functionality, as well as some swish marketing that make the Fusion suitable for the visually impaired. I don’t know about you, but I’ve had a fair few fights trying to line up either end of a USB cable, I doubt I would fare much better if I had impaired vision; we’ll get to how it helps with this in a moment.

Features

  • Dynamic Power Limiting (DPL) for USB and Limited Source Operation
  • Foreign Object Detection (FOD) in WPC mode
  • Fusion OTR technology
  • Ultralight weight & slim design only 55*78*6.5 mm
  • Ti (Texas Instruments) smart dynamic & overcharge detection

The packaging is pretty straight forward, and with that bright pink cover it certainly stands out! You’ll also notice the packaging comes with braille print on the front, as well as a sticker which reads “official sponsor – Taiwan guide dog association.”

In the box, you’ll find a cut-out guide to aid with installation although anyone who’s half adept at sticking something to a flat surface likely won’t need it. There’s a large white sticker with high-vis pink letting and braille on the top, a 3M sticky pad, USB cable, two cable routing fittings with sticky backs and two screws; everything you need to install the system in a wide range of configurations.

The main power delivery unit is slim and nicely designed, so much so that it’ll look nice and tidy on your desktop as a direct “put your phone/tablet on this” style device. However, using the 3M pad you can mount it on the underside of a desk or table surface. Again, taking note that there is a little braille on the edge to show where there Micro-USB port it.

On the underside, there’s a nice flat surface, so it should be nice and easy to mount under a desk or table using that 3M pad. There’s also two screw holes, perfect for those that prefer a more permanent mounting solution.

The previously mentioned Micro-USB port on the end. This is for the main power input, you can connect the included USB cable to a USB plug, computer or any other compatible output.

A nice bonus is the Qi add-on, which can make any device wireless charging compatible. Of course, the grand irony here is that it comes with a cable, which seems silly, but there’s merit to be found here and I’ll get to that in a moment.

On the underside, you’ll find a gel-like surface which is tactile and will stick to glossy surfaces such as the back of a phone, SatNat, tablet, etc.

If the Micro-USB connector isn’t much good to you, a dual connector Apple adaptor is also included!

Lexar JumpDrive M20 2-in-1Flash Drive Review

Introduction

There are thousands of USB sticks and flash storage on the market and as we all know, they’re not all built the same. Lexar, by Micron, know a lot about flash-based storage and have come out with their JumpDrive M20 Flashdrive. The M20 is a drive that combines many things seen prior, but not in the same product.

The JumpDrive M20 supports USB On-the-Go (OTG) and can be plugged directly into a compatible smart device for easy file transfers. Since all smart devices use a USB 2.0 micro port in this area, there wasn’t any need to make the drive complicated by adding USB 3 micro connector or having to include adapters of sorts. A flash-drive needs to stay simple, but we would still like to have the best possible speeds when we connect this drive to our PC, because it supports that too with its USB 3.0 connector. Plug it directly into your PC or other USB 3 capable device and you can get read speeds up to 120MB/s and write speeds up to 55MB/s. For example, you could transfer a 3GB HD video clip in less than one minute.

Both USB connectors are retractable with the slider on the side of the drive. Push it all the way to either side to expose the corresponding connector or park it in the middle when not in use. It couldn’t be much simpler than that. There sadly aren’t any covers over the plugs themselves when retracted, which I prefer to have on my flash drives as I always get dirt trapped when they’re  in my pockets.

The OTG function is primarily, but not exclusively, an Android function and the JumpDrive is designed to work with Android systems. To help you make sure that your device is compatible, Lexar placed a QR-code right on the front of the box for you to check before you even take the drive into your hands in a shop. Of course, you can also view the list from the Lexar homepage.

The Lexar JumpDrive M20 makes it a breeze to get files from your smart phone or tablet and move them over to a flash drive, something that otherwise requires a cable or wireless connection to your PC. With OTG, that’s a thing of the past and the best of all is that it is plug and play.

The JumpDrive M20 is backward compatible with USB 2.0 devices, officially  compatible with PC and Mac systems and works with the Astro File Manager that can be downloaded from the Google Play store. It also comes backed by a nice three-year warranty and a long-time experience from the company behind it all.

Transcend Releases JetFlash 880 USB 3.0 and OTG Flash Drive

Transcend launched a new dual flash drive that features both a USB 3.0 and an OTG micro USB connector. In return, the JetFlash 880 OTG Flash Drive provides the fastest possible speeds when connected to your PC with the universality of using it with your Android or other OTG enabled device.

The use of OTG is a lot easier than having to fumble with cables as well as the need for a PC to get files from your smartphone or tablet and onto a flash drive. In most cases it’s also a lot faster than WiFi, that also requires additional hardware to get your files onto a flash drive to take it along with you on a shareable and universal usable flash drive.

The JetFlash 880 is produced with quality metal that is said to significantly reduce the weight. And those nano sticks already weigh next to nothing, so this one must be light. In addition, the use of a Chip On Board design makes the JetFlash completely dust and water resistant.

File encryption and management can be with the free Transcend Elite App that can be found in the Google Play store. Transcend’s JetFlash 880 USB Flash Drives will be available shortly in 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB capacities, and come backed by Transcend’s Limited Lifetime Warranty.

Team Group M131 16GB Dual Flash Drive Review

Introduction

The limited storage in mobile devices can be a real problem just as the fact that a touchscreen rarely is the optimal input device. Both these things might be a thing of the past if you invest in a Team Group M131 Smart Dual Drive with OTG support that. I’m taking a closer look at 16GB model of just this drive today.

Whether you want to create a copy of the files you got on your mobile device onto a flash drive or just want to create backups, switch out content or extend the internal storage for a while, the M131 USB drive is here for you. You just slide the cover back and plug it into your OTG capable device.

Once we have our files copied from the smartphone or tablet onto the M131 flash drive, we would like to be able to use it our PC that doesn’t have a micro USB port. For this purpose, the M131 is designed as a two piece drive. Simply pull it apart and you’ll expose the normal USB 2.0 connector and have a flash drive like you’re used to from all the other ones you have.

Plugging it apart also exposes the third feature of this flash drive, the separate OTG adapter that you can use to connect compliant devices directly to your tablet or smartphone and this includes USB keyboards, mice and hard drives.

The surface is made from a matte anti-fingerprint material and it has a slide cap design over the Micro USB port to prevent dust gathering and collisions to the somewhat weaker point compared to a normal USB plug. Like most flash drives, the M131 also comes with a strap hole slings to carry it more convenient and prevent unnecessary loss and searches.

Finally, the dual design with the OTG Converter is a lot more convenient than a cable in most cases and the 2-in-1 design plugged together avoids the trouble of missing pieces and searching the cable.

The compact size of just 44 x 16.6 mm and weighing just 6.6 grams make this drive highly portable. It comes backed with a lifetime warranty and is available in three capacities: 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB.

ADATA Elite CE700 Qi Wireless Charging Station

Introduction

ADATA is brand synonymous with memory and storage solutions. For more than a decade they have established a strong relationship with their customers that consists of average consumers and business professionals around the world. With constant innovation and a determination to produce only high quality products that will exceed consumer expectations, ADATA will continue to be at the forefront of our culture’s technological growth.

Anyone that keeps up to date with their technology news can already see that most manufacturers are targeting the mobile device segment no matter the relevance to their core product stacks. Mobile devices have become such a critical part of our everyday lives and I for one still have a hard time fathoming how our culture was able to survive without things like email, instant messaging, or even mobile computing. We are a culture that constantly has our eyes glued to our phones and tablets to get through each day.

But how exactly are we constantly powering these devices? Traditionally the standard charge cable is the primary method of choice. But with technology constantly evolving we are always looking to improve the experiences that we have with these products. What is the obvious next step for charging your devices? Wireless charging of course. A freedom from the cluster of cables that we are so used to dealing with. That’s where ADATA comes in and brings us the Elite CE700 Qi Wireless Charging Station.

After a quick opening of the packaging you can see the the contents are pretty basic, but that’s okay because there’s not much needed to use this type of product. The box contains the user guide, micro USB charge cable, and the unit itself.

LUXA2 Groovy Wireless Bluetooth Speaker Review

Introduction

LUXA2 is a name that not many have been introduced to. The current market for mobile accessories has been flooded with brands that are trying to make a name for themselves, but for the last several years LUXA2 has been in a constant pursuit of feature-rich products with modern aesthetic appeal at affordable prices for everyone to set themselves apart. Apple centric accessories has been the company’s forte, but at CES this past month LUXA2 has shown that they have narrowed down their wide array of products that had included iPhone/iPad cases and misc device accessories to a more focused product stack that is nothing short of impressive.

LUXA2 has split their products into three categories: Portable Battery Packs, Audio Solutions, and Mobile Device Holders. Today we are going to look at the first of their entries into the audio solutions market; the Groovy Wireless Bluetooth Speaker.

Out of the box you are provided with a very easy to read user guide, 3.5mm analog cable, micro USB charge cable, two interchangeable leather straps (in both black and tan), and an attractive black leather carrying pouch.

First Official Apple Certified Wireless Controller Released By SteelSeries

SteelSeries has launched its first wireless controller for iOS 7 devices, making it the first fully wireless controller for iDevices certified by Apple. The Stratus looks like a smaller version of Microsoft’s Xbox 360 controller, and features a directional pad. There are two analog sticks and four face and shoulder buttons. All buttons are pressure sensitive, and the controller comes with a single micro-USB port at the bottom for charging. The controller connects via Bluetooth 2.1, and works with the iPhone 5S, iPhone 5C, iPhone 5, iPad Mini, iPad Air, iPad 4th gen and the 5th gen iPod Touch running iOS 7.

SteelSeries claims that the device has a full charge endurance of 10 hours, with the controller taking 2 hours to fully charge. Currently, not all games recognize a wireless controller, but more are starting to work with external controllers, so it should not be too long before every game in your catalogue works with the Stratus. Newer games like Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, for instance, work just fine with the Stratus.

Other wireless controllers like the MOGA Ace Power and the Logitech Powershell connect using the Lighting port, and as such aren’t the best solution if you’re looking to use the Lighting port for HDMI out. In that way, the SteelSeries Stratus is significantly better. However, the diminutive size of the controller is a drawback, and we for one cannot see the Stratus as the ideal controller for extended sessions of Infinity Blade 3.

Another major issue with the Stratus is its price, which is at $99.99. This is astronomically high considering Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3 and PS4 controllers cost $59.99 and are leagues ahead both in terms of build quality and comfort.
