Google’s New Logo Is Tiny In Bytes Compared To Its Predecessor

Posted on September 6, 2015 by Christopher Files

If you haven’t noticed, Google has recently launched a new logo with the aim of integrating all its services into one banner and to also add compatibility for the multitude of devices which are available on the market today. One aspect which is compelling is the comparable size of the corporation’s new logo which stands at a tiny 305 bytes which is far lower than the colossal 14,000 bytes of its old design.

But, why was the old logo so large and why should I care? The evidence is surprisingly interesting than it might sound. Firstly, the old logo implemented a complicated Serif font which used Bezier curves, this meant that 6 letters had a combined total of 100 anchor points which added a total of 6KB or 6,380 bytes, although when compressed the total size which plummeted to 2KB or 2,145 bytes.

As you can see below, comparing a simplified version of the new logo with that of the previous one really conveys the difference, for example, the new logo can be constructed entirely of circles except for the lower case “g”, below are the stats concerning the new logo

  • 10 circles (2 each for the capital G and lower case g, 2 for each O, and 2 for the e)
  • 5 rectangles (2 for the capital G, 1 for the lower case l, 2 for the e)
  • 1 shape made with 7 anchor points (the descender on the lower-case )

It seems the search giant is aiming for more minimalist design which is far less complicated than the old approach. It is also worth noting that Google pumps around substantial amounts of data every second of every day, even a lower size logo would make a difference to its servers and also to the end consumer, think data caps etc. A logo is there to primarily and quickly be identifiable to the consumer, it’s there to instantly catch the corner of the eye and, therefore, the design can be simpler, after all, now that Google have built up their brand to such a huge extent, it’s difficult to miss them.

Meet Google’s New Logo

Posted on September 2, 2015 by Christopher Files

The transformation of Google over the last decade as been nothing short of miraculous, this has included a myriad of services which have combined into one huge conglomerate. Now, Google have also changed their logo, which looks only slightly different to all of their previous logos.

Below is an image of the new design which has been unveiled by the search engines blog, so, why have Google opted for a new design? This is what the company have said.

“Today we’re introducing a new logo and identity family that reflects this reality and shows you when the Google magic is working for you, even on the tiniest screens. As you’ll see, we’ve taken the Google logo and branding, which were originally built for a single desktop browser page, and updated them for a world of seamless computing”

Not sure about “Google Magic” but ok whatever, other changes include the re-imagining of the small blue “G” icon which will now be divided into four colours, below is an image to convey this.   Google aims to offer “Seamless Computing” which integrates across the plethora of devices, whether it be Tablets, Mobiles, laptops and traditional Desktops. The world of computing has changed and therefore what once used to be a single desktop browser page is now a never-ending conveyor belt of tech. Google state that they will complete the rollout out of this design change in the near future.  But as of writing, it looks to be very much happening considering the colour scheme of both the logo and “G” have changed to the new design. It may make a difference depending on your point of view, only time will tell for consumers.

If you land on Google’s front page you might see this quirky animation which below is in GIF form, this is a subtle way of unveiling a new design.

ASUS Rolls Out ROG Sica Mouse and Whetstone Mouse Pad

Posted on March 31, 2015 by Gabriel Roşu

Asus has just released the Republic of Games Sica optical gaming mouse, featuring an ambidextrous design ideal for fingertip grip gamers, and Whetstone mouse pad, featuring a silicone-fabric construction, perfect for smooth and precise mouse control.

The company looks like it had its inspiration from the Mayan culture for these two products, having them feature Mayan markings and (of course) the ROG colour scheme. Users can buy these products with confidence since ROG had Taipei Assassins, a professional eSports team, test out the products to ensure they perform exceptionally in the gaming arena.

The ROG Sica has a compact, ambidextrous design optimized for multiplayer online battle arena gamers that require a strong grip. It looks to feature an independent two-button and single clickable scroll-wheel, along with durable Omron switches. Also, the left and right mouse buttons seem to be separate from the main mouse body to reduce travel distance and improve button tactility and responsiveness, having the Sica also featuring an improved exclusive easy-swap switch socket design lets users customize click resistance.

In terms of performance, the ROG Sica’s optical sensor tracks up to 5000 DPI, having a speed of up to 130-inches per second and 30g acceleration that is said to give users swift, pixel-precise mouse tracking. It also comes with the Armoury software that lets users customize button functions, performance settings, and ROG logo light effects. The ROG Sica is stated to have an iron-gray and red color scheme, a glowing ROG logo and intricate Mayan-stenciled side panels, a gold-plated USB 2.0 connector and low-friction Teflon feet.

The ROG Whetstone mouse pad is said to have a non-slip, odourless silicone base and an intriguing Mayan-inspired textured black fabric surface designed for precise mouse tracking and control. ROG has made the mouse pad extremely portable, featuring a rollable design that makes it easy to pack and bring to LAN parties or eSpots events.

The mouse pad also features a 2mm tick design, incorporates the latest 8-stage bonding and heat-sealing techniques, a special water-resistant coat that allows easy cleaning. Last but not least, is built for extensive use, having ROG guaranteeing that the rounded edges resist fraying and creasing for always-smooth mouse tracking.

New Sonos Logo Looks Like Pulsating Speakers When Scrolled

Posted on January 24, 2015 by Ryan Simmons

There’s little else to say because you’ve already seen it. Well, just in case you managed to get here without scrolling past the thumbnail, Sonos, speaker manufacturer, has a new logo, a logo that rather cleverly pulses like a speaker when you scroll past it.

Go on, scroll! The thing is, there is no official mention of this effect by the designers, Bruce Mau Design. So one wonders, was this intentional? If so – clever! If not – that’s an amazing coincidence!

The logo is already working for them, a whole host of publications have already written about it, leading to tons of free publicity for the company.

Think of it like an animated gif that isn’t animated. What do you think about it? Intentional or not?

Images Show Supposed 12-inch MacBook Air Display Unit

Posted on January 23, 2015 by Ryan Simmons

New images apparently show the display unit to be used on the rumoured 12-inch MacBook Air. The unit looks markedly different from current Apple notebooks, as it features a solid, polished Apple logo, rather than an illuminated one – just like iPads.

The screen also features an edge-to-edge black cover on the screen, somewhat similar to iPads too. Essentially, this display looks like a first generation iPad, without the home button and an upside-down logo.

The device this display is supposed to be used on is a rumoured even thinner MacBook Air. The new notebook is said to be extraordinarily thin and, as recent rumours suggest, it is to feature only one port – a reversible USB port. If real, this design could prove polarising, taking the original simplified concept of the MacBook Air even further.

When Steve Jobs introduced the original MacBook Air at Macworld in 2008, many were surprised by its simple design – omitting the then standard DVD drive and using a very small number of I/O ports. This was taken even further in 2010, with the debut of the current design of MacBook Air, a design which has received critical acclaim, spawning a market of thin, drive-less ‘ultrabooks’.

Sony Asked People to Redesign Their Logo And Failed

Posted on November 23, 2014 by Ryan Simmons

Fast Company (via The Verge), has an interesting article that details Sony’s efforts to redesign its logo in 1981.

Sony decided for its 35th Anniversary to launch the “Sony International Logotype Design Contest” – a competition that gave anyone and everyone the chance to redesign the company’s logo. 30,000 people submitted their designs from across the world, with Sony cutting that down to 59 of the best. From those, they had planned to choose one design to replace their current one, but decided against it. You’ll understand why by looking at 3 of the best, shown above.

What they did do in the end, to their embarrassment perhaps, was split the prize money between those three and publish an ad in Time Magazine thanking all of the contributors. The article is an interesting look into a future that could have been. A future with very bad logos.

Corsair Respond to Community Feedback Over New Logo Design

Posted on September 26, 2014 by Peter Donnell

Corsair have been in a little bit of hot water this last week; they’ve only just launched their new Corsair Gaming brand name along side the launch of their stunning new Corsair RGB series of peripherals, but it looks like many people don’t like the new logo! It’s only a minor detail of course, but when you’re paying over £100 for an ultra high-end gaming keyboard, you want it to look right.

The new logo has been heavily debated on the bottom half of the internet, Reddit, forums and many other places, often referenced as the Corsair tramp stamp! Corsair have obviously been listening to this feedback and have responded in the best way they possibly could; they’re giving the fans what they want the most. Corsair released the following statement on their Facebook page to clear up the matter:

“We Hear You

As many of you know we launched our new Corsair Gaming line of peripherals this week. We’ve received a ton of feedback on the products and new logo. We are amazed and humbled by the passion our customers have for the original Corsair sails logo. The ship + sails are here to stay and will continue to be used on all Corsair PC component products.

However, we know many of you prefer the classic logo on our keyboards, and you’ve made your voices heard. For those of you looking for the new K70 RGB with the original sails logo, it’s currently available in North America from Newegg – just look for the SKU CH-9000063-NA. What’s more, as a direct result of your feedback, we will continue to sell and manufacture the Vengeance K70 and Vengeance K70 RGB with Cherry MX Red switches, with the sails logo, via select retailers and Corsair.com.

Let’s keep talking!”

So there you have it, the sails will stay on the K70 for now, good to see a company listening to their fans, rather than just pushing the new branding on us until we accept it. It’s a trivial matter, but after the wave of backlash this last week; it clearly matters a lot to a lot of Corsair fans.

Which do you prefer, the old or the new?

Airbnb Release New Logo – Jokers Chuckle

Posted on July 20, 2014 by Chris Smith
Reply

Airbnb has released their latest logo update, said to be a symbol of belonging – unfortunately for most internet trolls, they have other things on their mind.

Some smart cookie has released a Tumblr account named Airbnb Logos and is completely focused on creation and collection of the funniest interpretations of this new symbol.

With most of the interpretations being unsafe for young eyes, Airbnb might have a re-design on their mind or maybe this is the exact promotion they want and need. Some of the best interpretations include Peter Griffin’s (Family Guy) chin, a cute puppy dog or various forms of male and female genitalia.

Some of the public feedback ranges from copyright claims to outright praise. But unfortunately since seeing the dedicated Tumblr, there’s only one place our mind is sending us – the gutter.

What do you see?

Razer Starts “Designed by Razer” Program, Team up With NZXT to Bring H440 PC Case

Posted on June 14, 2014 by Gabriel Roşu
Reply

Razer is well-known for its high-quality products on the market, spanning from systems, to peripherals, software, gear and even gadgets. It seems that the company is not satisfied with all it is currently offering, therefore Razer seems to be moving towards the PC chassis market as well.

This time, Razer will not manufacture the products themselves. It is said that Razer will give the designs to third-party manufacturers, having issued a so-called “Designed by Razer” program. From what is known, Razer has only chosen a select pool of manufacturers at the moment.

Recently, Razer has unveiled a new product it is currently working on, coming by the name of “Christine”. It is said that the product featured an innovative design, while also providing active liquid cooling solution, as well as noise cancellation. Also, Razer stated that “Christine” allowed factory over clocking of components without cancelling any warranties.

However, it is said that “Christine” will not be available on the market anytime soon, but with the “Designed by Razer” program, it appears that Razer has made a partnership with NZXT which will launch the H440 PC case.

Looking at the H440, Razer’s personal ‘touch’ can be seen in the USB ports, as well as the green light illuminating the rear ports and the Razer logo. One particularly interesting aspect of the case is the absence of the 5.25″ drive bays, which could become more and more common in future PC cases since optical drives are becoming obsolete.

However, NZXT does offer external 5.25″ drive bays for the H440 for users who still find them useful. Other features of the PC case consist of 6+2 2.5″ drive bays, support for mini-ATX, microATX and ATX motherboards, seven expansion slots, front side, bottom front and rear filters, radiator support, two USB 3.0 ports, as well as two USB 2.0 ports, and last but not least, a microphone and a headphone port on the front panel.

In terms of dimensions, the H440 measures in at 22cm x 51cm x 47.5cm (8.66 in x 20.08 in x 18.71 in), weighing in at 9.75 kg (21.5 lbs). NZXT stated it will manufacture and distribute the H440 on its retail channels, having it be available starting next month at a price tag of $149.99.

Spot The Difference – Google Makes a Tiny Change to Their Logo

Posted on May 29, 2014 by Chris Hadley
4

Google are very well-known for their daily doodles and interactive headlines that top their home page nearly every day, but whilst these are a one day only affair, their main company logo is what most users tend to see. Over the years the corporate logo has seen a number of changes and alterations to the font, colours, patterns and so on, but the latest revision is so small that it’s very hard to see.

As seen from the GIF above, the alterations have been made to the second ‘g’ and ‘l’, where the ‘g’ has moved a whole 1 pixel to the right and the ‘l’ sees more of a change moving a whopping 1 pixel to the right and 1 pixel lower down.

Apparently a few people have commented previously to say that the ‘l’ and ‘e’ did not line up properly and this must have got on the nerves of one particular graphic editor, forcing him to make the changes. In addition another viewer has apparently noted a change to the second ‘o’ where the yellow saturation has been increased – but this is not possible to see with the eye, but a Photoshop investigation does show a variation in the two logos.

No matter how slight the change is, one saying goes ‘it’s the small changes that make the big things happen’. This change probably won’t affect Google in any way, although one person is probably going to sleep better, now that they know everything is lined up as it should be.
