Intel Skylake Will be Limited to just Three SKU Variants at Launch

With the launch of Intel’s next iteration of CPU’s just around the corner, rumours have been circulating media outlets for a short while. This can be in the form of pricing or unreleased specifications or even pictures of the naked PCB.

Information is now coming around that the release of the Skylake processors will be staggered, much like how AMD are currently doing with the R9 Fury range or NVIDIA has done with the GTX 900 series. What we have deduced is that in the first wave of releases, we will only be able to purchase the more desirable CPU’s, the i7-6700k, i5-6600k and a currently unknown, but what can be assumed as the i5-6500k; however, that is purely my assumption.

We already know the pricing of the i7-6700k to be somewhere in the region of $400 and the i5-6600k around $280, so the possibility of a higher range i5 or lower range i7 could be quite high to fill in the $300 region.

What we have also seen through these sources is that even though these are the HOT chips, stock will be extremely limited. Could this be due to poor manufacturing processes of the new 14nm silicon or maybe prices could be raised due to high demand; who knows.

What are your thoughts on this? Will you be jumping on the LGA 1151 bandwagon at launch? I know I will be; if I can get a chip that is.

Android Auto Now Available for the Latest 2015 Hyundai Sonata

If you are an Android user and looking to buy a car that can take you anywhere, you might consider what Hyundai has to offer this year. The company just revealed that their latest 2015 Hyundai Sonata with Navigation model just received support for Android Auto and is ready for navigation duties.

Already a 2015 Sonata with Navigation driver? Then you can take the car to a Hyundai dealer and have the Android Auto software installed free of charge. The company also knows that some customers may not have access to a Hyundai dealer or have time to leave their car overnight to get the software update.

This is why Hyundai will make the software available to download by owners later on this summer. All you need is a MyHyundai account to start the download and once downloaded, it can be uploaded on a USB drive. The update itself is pretty easy too, just stick the USB drive into the Sonata’s USB port and let the automated update system do its thing.

To be noted is that customers need to know the Vehicle Identification Number and provide a name and address to be able to register for a MyHyundai account. In addition to the 2015 Sonata with Navigation model, Hyundai is also making the Android Auto software available for a wider range of cars, including Sonata Sport, Eco, Limited, Sport 2.0T and Limited 2.0T.

EVGA Celebrates Spring With Free Backplate for GTX 970 Cards

Spring is in the air, at least according to the calendar, and EVGA is celebrating this with a bonus backplate when purchasing an EVGA GeForce GTX 970 SC or SSC card. I don’t know how they made the connection from spring to backplate, but I’m certainly not going to argue with free stuff.

The two cards that come with a free backplate are the EVGA GeForce GTX 970 SSC ACX 2.0+ (04G-P4-3975-KR) and EVGA GeForce GTX 970 SC ACX 2.0 (04G-P4-2974-KR) graphics cards, and there are a few conditions to get the free backplate. The cards have to be purchased at EVGA’s online store or participating resellers: Micro Center, NewEgg, NCIX, Alternate, and Scan Computers. The offer is valid from the 17th april and ends on the 30th April 2015.

The backplates will automatically be added to your purchase, so there is no trouble with filling out forms in order to get it later. You have to install it to the card yourself, but that’s very easy and instructions will be included. A backplate doesn’t just act as a backbone to your graphics card by boosting rigidity and extra support for the PCB, it also aids in protecting critical components and helps to reduce the GPU temperature. Oh, and it also looks pretty sweet.

MSI Celebrates 100 Million Sold Nvidia GPUs with Limited Edition Card

MSI has already sold more than 100 million Nvidia GPUs and to celebrate that milestone they’re launching a new limited edition graphics card, the GTX 970 GAMING 100 Million Editon.

The new card comes with a green-themed TwinFrozr V and is the third colour choice you’ll get for this base card on top of the default black and red and the gold-themed we saw not long ago. Otherwise, the card looks to have the specifications as the normal version, which by the way, is an amazing card. MSI has also revealed that the cards will be shipped with a special gift, but wouldn’t reveal more at this time.

Update: Since the article was written, the card has started to be listed at different shops around the world as pre-order. Overclockers UK is one of them where this Limited Edition card can be yours for £319.99 inc VAT. Estimated time of arrival is set to January 23rd.

Swiftpoint GT – Slide Gesture Mouse Announced

Interactive change has come to peripherals – the Swiftpoint GT has been reportedly constructed in a bid to change the way we look at mice design which has followed common trends since it’s inception in 1964. Said to ensure your fingers can ‘become the mouse’, this product is marketed as a step into the future for computing interface technology. It’s being talked up a lot – can it live up to the hype?

The Swiftpoint GT is a compact and convenient mouse which combined natural touch gestures through a blue booth connection to your computer. Designed to offer two modes, point-and-click and touch gesture, this product has been developed in order to combat against the commonly seen Repetitive Strain Injury, Occupational Excessive Syndrome and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome seen within office workers, tech enthusiasts and professional gamers of today’s age.

The new design is said to be better for your body, allowing you to grip the mouse like a pen regardless of your hand size. Also claiming to increase your Microsoft Power Point, Word and Excel efficiency, the claims of this product get more and more outlandish as we read on.

Coming in at 23 grams and measuring 5.6cm x 4.3cm x 3.3cm, the Swiftpoint GT requires a smaller amount of operable space, due to its intended usage nature. This is marketed as an extensive positive when compared to small and somewhat clumsy Bluetooth mice of today, giving living giants like myself (6ft 5inch) the all-too-common hand cramps associated with poor design.

We’ll share with you a product release video below, please let us know your thoughts. I’d certainly like to test one, but I don’t think it’s going to make it into my Dota2 or CS:GO matchmaking games just yet. Short of making you a morning coffee, this mouse can apparently do it all.

Ubisoft Claim 30 FPS is Being Pressured by Console Manufacturers

Remember last week when Ubisoft told us that 60 FPS looks weird and claimed that 30 FPS is more than suitable for all gamers? This was all uncovered during a visit to a school where the students asked some hard questions, including “What the hell happened with Watch Dogs”. How did Ubisoft respond after the 30 FPS fact? Interestingly is the answer.

Well, they’ve kind of passed the blame along – claiming that console manufacturers are pressuring them into the 30 FPS game play, not by their own choice. Apparently a Ubisoft Game Architect was quoted stating that 60 FPS is the companies aim, but “limitations” have been seeing them settle for a 30 FPS benchmark. This representative went on to state that console manufacturers are pressuring them to replicate the same 30 FPS limitations on their finished PC products. He also made a mention that Ubisoft liked to reuse as much code as possible (most likely due to time and money savings), which is why many of their games have certain similarities.

Another hard-hitting student queried if Ubisoft was “aware of the negative responses of the recent decision to lock your games into 30FPS. If so, what do you think about that?”. They replied that due to console hardware limitations, they’ve been forced to choose between graphic quality and smoothness (frame rate).

Reddit user ‘timois’ was the original creator of this information thread, who also made sure to point out that Ubisoft implied that Microsoft is making them lock the frame rate on PC too.

Coming from a personal PC gamer standpoint, it’s pretty eye-bleedingly obvious when your gaming is running as low as 30 Frames Per Second. So much so that it generally incites a PC restart from myself and constant pondering if my system is trying to overheat itself again. It’s also made more obvious through shooter type games, like CS:GO which I’ve been dabbling in lately running at 200+ FPS and 144hz. What’s Ubisoft’s response to this question however? – “60FPS looks weird”.

I’m not here to preach the “PC Gaming Master Race” stereotype that is seen across social media ever so often in this day and age, but if the consoles are limited to 30 FPS and the consumers are happy – let them be. But please, don’t subject me to the same limitations.

To their credit, Ubisoft has made and will make some incredible games – but we’d love for them to look incredible too. Otherwise, we’re going to see a progression similar to this.

Galaxy S5 Swarkovski Crystal Edition – For Those With Expensive Taste

If you’re in the market for a brand new smartphone and you find that even an iPhone 5S is cheap, there are a limited number of options out there for you to look at. Obviously you could go and get a gold-plated iPhone but this a bit too common and everyone and their dog is rocking an iPhone – even if it is covered in gold. There is also the fact that it doesn’t really shine or sparkle. Fear not though as your troubles are soon to be solved as Samsung are soon planning to launch their latest addition to the exclusive Crystal Collection range of handsets.

If you are desperate to get your hands on the [probably outrageously expensive] handset, you will have to wait back a little longer as it appears Samsung are aiming this new creation at the Korean market to start with.

Unlike the Crystal Edition of the S4, Samsung’s promotional video shows that the back of the phone has a bit more than a handful of hand polished stones in place. Covered from top to bottom in Swarkovski crystals, it may be hard to distinguish this handset from one of those cheap and tacky plastic cases that you can buy from the street markets, but there is no mistaking the fact that, unlike the cheap cases, these are the real deal.

Specification wise, there is no indication that the S5 will be anything special over the high-street range and with Samsung breaking some records with the sales of the handset, I imagine Samsung will quickly rack up the sales of the Limited Edition handset when they are available. Whilst I can see that there are a number of people out there who have enough money to, or are crazy enough to spend this much money on a phone, I can imagine that many will hold off doing so, after all if you’re already making a statement about your wealth, having a flashy phone is likely to make you more of a target for theft.

Black Friday is in full swing across the globe and there is almost no stone that has been left unturned in the market. HP’s new Chromebook Priced At Less Than £200 on Amazon

HP’s latest Chromebook, the Chromebook 11, has had its price cut from £230 to £200 on Amazon. It is interesting indeed, especially for Chromebook fans out there who are looking to acquire such a device.

Whoever missed the announcement and does not know what’s it about, the Chromebook is a netbook for those who just want to browse and send email. It runs Google’s Chrome operating system, a Linux-based operating system designed by Google to work primarily with web applications. The user interface takes a minimalist approach and consists almost entirely of just the Google Chrome web browser since the operating system is aimed at users who spend most of their computer time on the Web, the only “native” applications on Chrome OS are a browser, media player and file manager.

HP’s version has a better screen than the likes of Samsung’s effort in the market. It is only 1366 x 768 pixels with a 11.6-inch display, but has brighter and clearer IPS tech. In terms of specs, it runs on a 1.7GHz mobile processor, 2GB of RAM and just 16GB of storage. But the big idea is that you are supposed to feed all that data on Google’s NSA friendly cloud anyway. The Chromebook is more for interacting with the net.

For those interested in buying such a netbook in the future can go on Amazon’s website for more details on the device and price/availability.

Apple’s Retina iPad Minis Rumored To Have Limited Stock Availability

It seems Apple CEO Tim Cook confirmed another rumor when asked about the availability of the iPad mini with Retina display. Cook said that the new model will start shipping “later in November,” but that it’s “unclear whether we’ll have enough for the quarter or not”. Cook quickly pointed out that “we know how many we’ll have,” but that it’s difficult to predict demand for a product until it starts shipping. He seemed to be confirming persistent rumors that the Retina mini would be in short supply during the holiday shopping season.

Although Cook insisted that “we’ll do fairly well with iPad,” and that Apple will have a “really great holiday season,” the company may have reason to be concerned about not being able to meet demand for the new model. As reported earlier, iPad sales were flat compared to the same period last year, even while competitors are seeing major growth in tablet sales. Apple has seen its share of the total tablet market drop from 60 percent a year ago to just 32 percent today.

Apple is hoping, according to Cook, for “an iPad Christmas,” but it may be one that many customers will have to celebrate without the company’s most notable new model.

Corsair Unleash the Vengeance Extreme – The Worlds Fastest Memory Kit

So you’re in the market for some new memory and you want a kit that’s fast? Well normally you’ll be looking at 2133MHz, or 2400MHz, if you’ve got the need for more speed then there is the option of 2666Mhz or 2800MHz. The question is though, what if this is still not enough? Well if you’re as bonkers as the R&D team at Corsair are, then there is now the option for a 3000MHz kit!

Selecting the IC’s for this extreme kit is no easy feat, and after going through the most rigorous four-stage hand-screening process that Corsair engineers have done, less than 1 in 50 ICs will make the grade and be worthy of taking home on the PCB of one of these kits.  This is not where the validation ends, once the kits have been made, they need to pass performance tests on a select group of Z77 motherboards with an unlocked Ivy Bridge CPU that has the capability to run the kits at their intended speed

“We are focused on helping enthusiasts and overclockers push the boundaries of PC performance,” said Thi La, Senior VP and GM of Memory and Enthusiast Component Products at Corsair. “Our engineering team’s hard work has led to new performance optimization techniques for memory, which we are pleased to debut in our new Vengeance Extreme memory.”

If you’re mad enough to want one of these kits, then sit down first as the price may come as a shock. An 8GB kit with timings of 12-14-14-36 will set you back a cool US$749 and will only be available for a very limited time as the hand made modules are going to be few in numbers. Don’t worry about the question of overclocking as results have already been floating about seeing one of these kits running at 3144MHz overclocked. If overclocking is your game, then Corsair do include on of Kingpin Cooling’s LN2 memory pots for taking the kits to hyper levels of speed.
