Gears Of War: Ultimate Edition Releases Without A Word

The Gears Of War franchise has been known as a game for Xbox users for years, with them enjoying releases of the second and third game while PC users were stuck enjoying the small amount of content they gained in the first game. Finally, the series returns with a bang on the PC, okay maybe not a bang but more like a silent whisper as the Ultimate Edition releases without a word from anybody.

If you are a fan of the series you’ll be able to enjoy the remaster of the original trilogy on PC as of today. Already released on the Microsoft Store for Windows 10 users you can enjoy the new game as long as your PC feels brave enough to face its requirements. Surprisingly, the last we heard about the games release was the specification for your systems and rumours about an early 2016 release date.

Perhaps a reason for the release’s rather silent release and low price mark at just £22.79 is the lack of recommendations from users who are reporting difficulty with the games and bad performance on every hardware configuration imaginable. Typically a split between your graphics card manufacturers, both AMD and Nvidia users are reporting issues with the game and a user running an R9 Fury suffering from a frame rate of fewer than 10 frames per second almost consistently.

Given the bad performance, it’s no surprise that it is a known problem to Microsoft that you can’t even download the game anymore and with recommendations to download it again “in a few days”. Given it’s their first DX12 game and made by Microsoft for what is now their franchise, the few days could be a stall to try patch up the problems people have encountered before another Arkham Knight scenario happens.

Firaxis Working on XCOM 2 Fixes

People can’t wait for their new favourite game, with trailers and advertisements teasing and tempting you into saving every world from a threat or every road for a quick race. One of the former games is the eagerly anticipated XCOM 2, a game which has had some issues with their initial release version.

According to lead designer, Jake Solomon, the game’s technical problems are “the first thing we talk about when we come in in the morning”. With such a high-profile release, when the game runs badly for people they get upset quite vocally, as is the case with XCOM 2. While they are working on fixes for a range of things, with small hotfixes being released commonly, large fixes for things such as the framerate issues are “coming soon”.

In fairness, the game seems to only have problems at rare and random intervals, with most players being able to enjoy the game with no issues (or at least, minor ones). Some of the things that bugged players was the camera pauses for a second after kills or certain events in-game, something which Solomon claims responsibility for saying “that stuff’s on me… if things can be sped up they certainly will”.

It’s nice to see people making games that feel so passionate about their creation, even after the initial paychecks. With releases such as Aliens: Colonial marines damaging companies reputations beyond repair for a lot of fans and gamers, having a good aftercare package is essential these days.

Adobe Creative Cloud Bug Deletes User Data on Mac

A recently published update for the Adobe Creative Cloud graphics service has been pulled by Adobe following reports that the Mac version of the software may delete important user data with no warning.

Backblaze, a data backup service, has been hit hardest by the bug, with their official providing some insight into the issue. Whenever a user signs into the Adobe Creative Cloud service after the update, a script is run that automatically deletes the first folder found in the root directory of the Mac. Due to Backblaze’s reliance on a hidden folder named .bzvol, it has been hit harder than many other software or services, as this required folder is likely to be the first directory in the root.

In an email, Backblaze Marketing Manager Yev Pusin wrote “This caused a lot of our customers to freak out. The reason we saw a huge uptick from our customers is because Backblaze’s .bzvol is higher up the alphabet. We tested it again by creating a hidden file with an ‘.a’ name, and the files inside were removed as well.” A number of Backblaze officials have posted videos of the bug in action online. The only version that seems to be causing the unwanted deletions is 3.5.0.206.

Even those who don’t use the Backblaze service are suffering effects potentially dangerous to their system with the.DocumentRevisions-V100, which is required for Mac autosave and version history to function, being high up alphabetically. Folders with spaces are also at risk, and as a result, the data of users who store important files in them, with OSX sorting said folders to the top entry on the hard drive.

Adobe has already addressed the issue, with an Adobe spokesperson stating “We are aware that some customers have experienced this issue and we are investigating in order to resolve the matter as quickly as possible. We are stopping the distribution of the update until the issue has been resolved.” Anyone who is yet to install the update should refrain from doing so, and those who have should avoid logging in to the service until a fix is published. For those who already have the update have a workaround available, by creating a folder sorted higher alphabetically than any other on the drive. An obvious example would be “.aaaaaa”, but Backblaze has suggested the more amusing “.adobedontdeletemybzvol.”

It is amazing how a bug this major can be allowed to go live without being spotted and there is always the possibility of sabotage with an unscrupulous employee or hacker hiding the script in the code. Until Adobe releases more news on the issue and a fix, we don’t know, but it should certainly make many users a lot more wary of the service.

ASRock Releases BIOS Update to Fix Skylake Instability Bug

Intel’s Skylake architecture has received a number of negative headlines regarding its high cost compared to the previous generation, flexing with high pressure coolers and most recently, stability issues during heavy workloads. The stability bug predominately revolves around demanding software like Prime95 and caused systems to hang on a regular basis. Thankfully, motherboard vendors including ASUS, Gigabyte, MSI and now ASRock have quickly identified the problem and launched BIOS fixes. Here is the original statement from Intel:

“Intel has identified an issue that potentially affects the 6th Gen Intel® Core family of products.  This issue only occurs under certain complex workload conditions, like those that may be encountered when running applications like Prime95.  In those cases, the processor may hang or cause unpredictable system behavior.  Intel has identified and released a fix and is working with external business partners to get the fix deployed through BIOS.”

As you can see, Prime95 is now completely stable across every ASRock 100-series motherboard, and all you have to do is apply the latest BIOS update. It’s great to see manufacturers release bug fixes so quickly especially when the issue impacts on system stability. Clearly, it’s only a minority of people who use complex workloads such as Prime95. On the other hand, I’d theorize that most Z170 customers overclock their CPU and require stress testing programs to gauge if a certain frequency/voltage combination is stable.

Personally, I’d recommend using AIDA64’s stress test because it appears to have fewer issues with Skylake CPUs. Although, it’s safe enough to run OCCT or Prime95, especially after the BIOS update. It seems Skylake has disappointed users and prices definitely need to come down to respectable levels. In the UK, an i7-6700K can cost upwards of £350, which almost defies belief!

Unable to Create a PSN Account? Here’s Why!

Christmas is a time for giving and sharing. More often than not these days games and consoles are shared, resulting in a very busy period where everybody is online creating new accounts and downloading their new game updates. Sony’s PlayStation network (PSN) seems to be having some problems with the Christmas boom, resulting in slightly slower than average speeds for getting the required emails.

The Playstation network appears be having trouble sending the verification emails you get sent at the start when you first create a new account or a sub-account, meaning that you won’t be able to create a new user without a major delay. What we describe as a major delay though is that these emails appear to be taking longer than an email to be received.

As late as 5 PM GMT, AskPlayStation, the official twitter handle for Playstation support questions, tweeted that they were still looking into the issue regarding account validation and password resets.

While users are still able to play single-player games and even download the updates to their games, you won’t be able to play multiplayer games or even visit the Playstation store to spend those gift cards that you received and purchase new games straight to download. While this should be a temporary glitch, how long it will last for is anyone’s guess.

This is bad news for Sony after problems with PSN hacking in the past and now this, it’s no surprise that people are upset with Sony and the PlayStation franchise and you can see why Microsoft’s Xbox is a market leader in certain regions and countries across the world.

Conference Cancelled After Pressure From IP Camera Makers

Security is a tricky subject. In recent years both digital and physical security has been scrutinised and exposed for some rather crucial weaknesses. Back in May it was claimed that a security researcher was able to remotely issue commands to a plane’s engines, more recently it was revealed that some car companies had silenced an investigation that had found a vulnerability in the way their key fobs communicated with their immobilizer system. Now it’s the turn of internet-enabled cameras to come under fire.

Gianna Gnesa is a security consultant with Ptrace Security, a company based in Switzerland. He was set to speak at the Hack in the Box GSEC Conference that was to be hosted in Singapore. He has since decided to cancel his presentation.

The presentation was set to reveal the breaches in security systems that utilize internet connected video games (IP cameras). Gnesa has since cancelled his presentation after “legal pressure from manufacturers affected”.  In the talk, Gnesa was set to “expose vulnerabilities found on major surveillance cameras and show how an attacker could use them to stay undetected”.

Traditionally security consultants work on a “responsible disclosure” policy, in which they only release date about defects or issues with security once the manufacturers or developers have had time to develop and release patches to fix these issues.

$75,000 Reward In Hunt For Drone Users

Drones are amazing devices, being able to fly a device throughout your garden and beyond, taking pictures that are breathtaking and near impossible for any one person to manage. The problems begin when users begin to do stupid things and end up endangering lives with the devices. Such as those who are now the focus of a hunt with a possible reward offering around $75,000 to the one who helps catch them.

Drones have caused a few problems in recent months, drone users have almost been responsible for 14 near misses with commercial planes between March 2014 and March 2015. With a jail sentence of 5 years for even endangering the planes, the CAA really want to drive home that it is unacceptable to use drones near airplanes. Across the pond in California, San Bernardino county to be precise, a reward of $75k has been offered to anyone who can help track down drone pilots who are flying their drones over the forest fires in the country recently.

The first incident involved a drone flying too close to a flight path, resulting in a $10,000 detour for three planes carrying flame retardant, not only costing a lot of money but also hampering the US Forest Services attempts to control and prevent the forest fire from spreading. The drone in question was flying above the legal limit of 400 feet and was also in the no-fly zone commonly put forward when dealing with wildfires.

The second fire resulted in firefighting helicopters being forced to land with as many as five drones present in the area of the fire, the subsequent fire then spread to the highway where at least 20 cars were destroyed by the flames. Luckily the passengers had managed to escape on foot prior to the fire reaching them. This was only a few days after they were forced to suspend a tanker arriving after a drone was spotted in the area around another wildfire.

With three possible culprits an offer of $25,000 has been put forward for the apprehension of the drone pilots, in what can only be considered as serious action against those who would endanger lives and property for a quick photo opportunity.

With lives being endangered on a nearly weekly rate, drone users need to be more careful and considerate or face serious repercussions for their actions.

NVIDIA Working With Warner Bros. To Fix Arkham Knight on PC

Warner Bros. had a very disappointing release of Batman: Arkham Knight, having the title not playable on PC due to performance issues. The game has reportedly been withdrawn from the market, with retailers stating that it will start putting it back on shelves again once it is properly fixed.

As for NVIDIA, we know it had switched from selling their GeForce cards bundled with the latest Batman title to having the company now selling them bundled with Metal Gear Solid V. However, NVIDIA also plans to make up for it by helping Warner Bros. developers fix their game.

From what we know so far, Warner Bros. is working on a patch to address the performance issues that is due in August. In addition to that, Nvidia Gameworks engineer Tom Peterson said that their team is also focusing on helping the devs at Warner Bros. as a ‘goodwill gesture’.

“We have 200 to 300 engineers that are actually visual scientists,” Peterson stated. “They’re the very best out there. We’ve taken the strategy that says let’s record exactly what they’ve got in their minds, convert it to algorithms … test it and QA it, and then supply it as middleware effectively to game developers”

The question is, why didn’t they get on it before it was launched? If you are to bundle a game with graphics cards that promote gaming, don’t you have to first see how it runs before you actually launch or even think of bundling it? My thoughts are that NVIDIA is also partially guilty here and now they are trying to make up for their mistake. What do you think?

Here Is Why Windows 8.1 Gained a Big Lead Over XP and Why It Matters

I know most people who loved Windows XP still stuck with it, even if Microsoft dropped support for it back in April 2014. The people who upgraded went to Windows 7, which now has the majority shares between all OS’. But why does Windows 8.1 need to be in front of XP?

Ok, the main reason XP needs to be something of the past is linked to its legacy security flaws. Since there is no more support, the remaining security issues can be exploited by everyone out there and you are pretty much using something you know you shouldn’t. But still, people are using it and it may pose a high security threat to anyone on the same network as an XP user (not to mention the user himself).

However, statistics show that Windows 8.1 now has a big lead ahead of XP. Statcounter shows that Windows 8.1 is roughly 5% ahead of XP and Netmarketshare shows only a 1.14% increase in usage. The big gap between the two services is due to their methods of analysing different OS’ and browsers out there, but it still shows promise.

While people are adopting real quick the 60.98% market share is still dominated by Windows 7 users. This is a big thing and the reason this matters is that it shows a view of how many people will adopt Windows 10 once it gets released. While we see a lot of XP users moving towards the newest Windows 8.1 release, the same cannot be said for Windows 7 users.

In my opinion, Windows 10 would bring a lot of features and restructure the user interface to something more familiar that is now found in Windows 7. However, the number of users upgrading to Windows 10 will be quite interesting to view as will mark a big turning point. Windows 10 is designed with a lot of new cloud services and business-oriented software in mind, as well as a lot of new and interesting features for the users themselves. The question is, will it be enough to change people’s minds about new software upgrades?

This Is Why New Software Comes With Old Flaws

You are probably wondering why we hear that legacy flaws are still present in new software. Well, the answer is simple. Developers have a habit of reusing old code for most of their projects and the code is not reviewed for all potential flaws, but rather the approach tends to be similar to the slang ‘if it works, then don’t try to fix it’.

This does not mean that developers are lazy. The approach is favourable even by top-notch programmers because of the tight deadlines they have to meet, so time will always be above everything else when shipping new software.

However, this comes at a hefty price. While we hear of many hacking incidents, only a few of them are complex enough to break even the most impenetrable systems. Most of them were done by exploiting the already ‘implanted’ flaws in all software products. Everything except the operating systems can be deemed ‘hackable’ by most people with some knowledge of hacking.

The flaws go so deep that even some government departments are at high risk. Security analyst found out that some software in government departments is still based on older programming languages. But is this the future of programming? Of course not.

Security analysts in the field say that the problems with legacy flaws may likely increase, but they don’t have to. The real problem is that, by focusing exclusively on shoving new software on the market, companies forget about security completely. A better approach here is to split project development into two major components, development and testing, which could work in parallel. This way, a lot of bugs could be fixed and major security bugs flagged before the software hits the market.

iOS Flaw Makes it Easier than Ever to Steal Your Apple ID

Apple’s iOS is widely recognised as one of the most secure mobile operating systems on the market today but is that really true? Well, maybe it is, but what I can tell you for sure is that nothing is unhackable in today’s world.

A security researcher claimed that it is now easier than ever to get hold of any iPhone or iPad user’s Apple ID account with a simple HTML injection. The security specialist claims to have built a tool that would allow just about anyone to make use of a well-known flaw in an Apple’s iOS Mail app and trick the user into giving his or her Apple ID credentials.

The tool mentioned above is said to create an HTML popup that mimics Apple’s own popup that asks you to re-enter your Apple ID credentials. As a regular iPhone user, you are likely to be so used to it that you won’t notice the difference and just type in your credentials as usual.

Once you tap OK on the popup, the credentials are sent to the hacker’s remote server. This likely puts everyone using an iPhone or iPad at risk, so do take care and remember that the Apple ID prompt appears only when you perform an action that requires your authorisation and not just out of the blue.

The issue is said to have been filed and acknowledged by Apple, but no fix has been released just yet. So how worried are you? Will you think twice before entering your Apple ID credentials?

Lawyer Blames Ars Readers For Hack Attempts

The web is a large place, with lots of people saying a lot of things on it. Not all of these things are nice, just a few bad people can quickly make the internet seem like a horrible place. While action can be taken, it is often difficult as people saying nasty things online often hide behind fake accounts and proxies to mask where they are actually connecting from, if its even in the same country as the agency trying to find them. In this case though a lawyer is taking action against several people after claiming that an online article was “defamatory”.

At the start of this story is a lawsuit by one man against three others, over the fact that the names of their trademarks may be too close. This is not an uncommon story, what with Bethesda taking action against Mojang over the fact that their new game ‘Scrolls’ could be confused with the Elder Scrolls Series. In this case, these names are “CaseRails”, “CaseWebs” and “CaseSpace”, with “CaseRails” being the only one not owned by Sanford Asman, the man taking action over the possible confusion. In an action to express his point of view regarding the matter; Asman decided to speak to Ars Technica about the problem, he does however disagree with how the article was written (the article can be viewed here).

Apparently the defendants, in his now amended complaint, state that CaseRails CEO Erik Dykema and several others may have encouraged the website to write “derogatory comments”. Examples given are the writing of “Ass Man” in the comments section and the creation of a website that uses Sanford’s name to direct users to an external website with no official affiliation, endorsement or permission from Sanford Asman. After the article was published, Sanford says his websites came under attack and was harassed as a result of the deformation that had occurred.

With both parties involved being intellectual property lawyers the case may be set to drag out, with the initial argument about naming possibly becoming overshadowed by the amended status talking about the negative comments posted online.

Counter Strike: Global Offensive’s Well-Known Bug Gets Acknowledged by Valve

If you are a Counter Strike: Global Offensive player, then you probably know about the bug. However, let’s outline it again for those of you who might not have experienced it, though it is highly unlikely if you have played the title by now.

In a shooter video game, there are two main coding aspects to take into account when firing a weapon at a character. First, the actual bullet/ray, or whatever you want to call it, is triggered once you fire the gun to check the direction and objects it hits in that direction.

The second most important aspect is once a character is hit by the bullet, it needs to find out what part of the body is hit to appropriately reflect the player’s damage/health.

This is where things go nasty in CS:GO. The hitbox that needs to determine what body is hit is actually a bit quirky, leading to a lot of moments where you want to smash your keyboard because you now you shot him in the head, but he acts like you barely grazed him.

After a couple of videos that clearly emphasise the issue went hot on Reddit, Valve finally acknowledged the bug that has been present in the title since it first launched. However, they were unable to provide an ‘eta’ on the fix. The videos can be viewed below. So how long do you think it will take Valve to solve it?

Grand Theft Auto 5 Still Shows Significant Bugs, Even After the Long Wait!

We previously announced what everyone found out while trying to get Grand Theft Auto 5 running in 4K and ultra-high graphics settings. Well, the 14GB VRAM usage was not as it seems. It was just a big annoying bug!

Yes ladies and gentlemen, even after the long wait for the title to get released on the PC, it still comes out with easy-to-find bugs. A more detailed analysis reveals two things. The first is that the SLI configuration doubles the amount of VRAM available AND used, and the second is that the 8x MSAA seems to double the required VRAM based on the VRAM available.

The pic above shows the required VRAM used on a single GPU configuration using 2x MSAA. It’s acceptable, but still…

This one displays the same thing, but on a SLI configuration. Notice how the VRAM available and used gets doubled? The same 2x MSAA configuration is applied.

However, upping the MSAA to 8x doubles the VRAM required, leading to the 14GB VRAM usage as we previously reported. Even so, why Rockstar… why?

GTA V: Barrel Full of Problems?

So following on from the username character issue we saw earlier today, it seems that another issue has reared its head. This time in the form of login errors (being the main issue).

So the main error code being presented is “ERR_GEN_ZLIB_1/2/3” and is known to affect everyone, but it only seems those that are using Rockstar Launcher are experiencing the most issues.

There are hundreds of other errors too, of which, I’ve highlighted all the errors that require you to REINSTALL the entire game. Here is a list of the error codes:

OK most of those errors will probably never affect most of us, if they do; they’re probably a very easy reboot fix.  I personally have been looking for fixes and so far none have worked, some claim to work, but are spam with stupid browser add-ons. I personally advise biting the bullet and re-installing the entire game, or waiting for an official response from Rockstar.

Grand Theft Auto 5 PC Users Faced with Login Problems over the Weekend

Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto 5 has just hit the PC platform and it already had its fair share of problems. Users with ‘unique’ usernames have been extremely disappointed when attempting to install or play the GTA 5 title over the weekend, having been greeted with the “Rockstar update service is unavailable (code 1)” message.

By ‘unique’ usernames, we mean to say that users with characters outside the alphanumeric table are facing the issue described above. Now let’s stop and think about that for a second… really? I mean how in the world did you not see this coming? Going on a simple forum or scrolling through your list of Steam/Uplay/Origin/Windows/etc usernames reveals the “0b\/|0u$”. People have been creative with their usernames for ages now.

Rockstar Support provided some information on their website, which reads as following:

“We have identified an issue where players with Windows usernames that include characters not found in the table at the bottom of this page will likely run into difficulties when attempting to download, install, or play GTAV. We are currently working on a fix for this issue.”

The company’s support has even stated to have had temporary alternative for the issue, but it involves creating a fresh account. While this gave you access to the game, you wouldn’t have had any previous achievements, friends or stats as on your regular account. Even so, who would want to play on a temporary account and lose everything when they have to switch back to their old one?

A full list of supported characters, according to Rockstar, read as following: “A a B b C c D d E e F f G g H h I i J j K k L l M m N n O o P p Q q R r S s T t U u V v W w X x Y y Z z 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9”

This is now in the past though, since Polygon reported that connection issues are now resolved. However, Rockstar now seems to be investigating some possible progression losses, saves, items and characters that occurred along with the connection problems. Twitter Users Beware: It’s Now Tracking Other Apps Installed

Twitter has just announced that it is now tracking other apps that its users have installed, therefore allowing ads to be more directly targeted to all.

This change will reportedly see users receive a notification when the setting is turned on, allowing you to opt out of this service through your phone settings. If you’re using an iOS device, this option is named “limit ad tracking”, whereas Android phones have it listed as “opt out of interest-based ads”.

This change is reportedly only tracking lists of apps that users have installed, not any data within these applications. It also will not collect the app lists from people who have previously turned off this targeting update.

Obviously, users are outraged at this change – claiming multiple privacy issues among other things.

What are your thoughts on this subject? We’ve already seen many change occur with applications publicly claiming and being rumored to track users data, applications and information. This is yet another step in that direction.

Blackberry Hasn’t Given Up

BlackBerry CEO John Chen has said today that the Asian market is critical to the recovery of his company, but he will not be pushing hard into the Chinese sector just yet.

Chen commented that for BlackBerry, the Chinese market isn’t currently on the top of this to-do list. This is reportedly due to China being very concerned about data security issues making Blackberry do some extra yards to work around this fact. However, Blackberry have confirmed that they will be focusing on markets in India and Southeast Asia – in particular Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.

An ex-coworker told me once that some nightclubs in Singapore require you to own a Blackberry device for you to be allowed into their premises, so you’d think that BlackBerry would have that market on a leash. Now whether this is true or not is another story, but either way it proves that BlackBerry as a company is though of very highly in that region.

In regards to the Chinese issue, Chen told today’s APEC forum:

“If we choose to expand our business in the Chinese market, it takes too long to win a reasonable market share, even if we have this time and money, I might choose our business for a region that has been reflected in the market, such as India and Southeast Asia.”

In 2012, there were reports claiming that the Indian government had allowed Blackberry to view some of its encrypted data, further rendering the Chinese government suspicions of any possible plans of company expansion in their region. Even given this information, Chen commented that this will not stop their research into increasing share in the Chinese market, stating: “Although the data is very sensitive issue, we still have a chance.”

Facebook’s Outage Scares Everyone… Again!

Millions of users have noticed today that around 12 pm Eastern Time, the social media giant, Facebook, went down for about 30 minutes. This is not the first time the website and its services are unavailable, having the social media giant experiencing similar issues just over a month ago.

Mashable has reported that it was able to access the website during the outage, though the response time is said to have been slower than usual. Users were reporting that they have been greeted with a “Sorry, something went wrong.” message when attempting to load the Facebook page.

It is said that even Facebook’s developer webpage went down during the initial outage, but went back up shortly afterwards. It then displayed a warning message describing the problem and that Facebook engineers are working to fix the issue.

Facebook is currently experiencing an issue that is affecting all API and web surfaces. Our engineers detected the issue quickly and are working to resolve it ASAP. We’ll update shortly.

The above message was displayed after the first occurrence at 12 pm ET, having the engineers change the message to the below mentioned one at around 1:45 pm ET.

Traffic and error-rates are almost back to normal after a coordinated intervention by our engineering teams. We are now monitoring the situation and we have our best engineers determining the root-cause of this issue that affected much of our web fleet. We apologize for any inconvenience and we aim to ensure that this issue does not repeat.

Mashable confirmed the outage through the Down for Everyone or Just Me and It Is Down Right Now services as well. During this time, Twitter was flooded with user messages regarding the outage.

The mobile version of the social media giant was reported to be down as well. Users are stated to have been greeted with the “Error loading News Feed” message inside the app. Even Instagram was reported to have been taken down during the outage, though nobody has confirmed the service’s outage.

A Facebook representative has issued an official statement regarding the issue experienced this morning, though it does not explain what exactly caused the outage.

“Earlier this morning, some people had trouble accessing Facebook for a short time. We quickly investigated and are currently restoring service for everyone. We’re sorry for the inconvenience.”

Android’s “Fake ID” Issue Could Allow Hackers to Steal Data from Millions of Devices

A security company by the name of Bluebox Security has been throwing warning out there in regards to a major flaw in Android operating systems that would potentially allow hackers to steal sensitive information from millions of devices without the user noticing it.

The company stated that the most affected users would be the ones owning an old Android handset that stopped receiving software updates. However, Android users should note that not all Android users are affected by the flaw at hand.

The “Fake ID” vulnerability, as Bluebox describes it, consists of the way the Android operating system processes the digital signature identities attached to apps from various vendors. The OS is said to be configured to automatically accept Adobe apps for example, or other vendors including the device management outfit 3LM. In addition, some apps bearing the latter vendor signatures can automatically plug into other apps in ways other apps cannot.

What is more worrying is that since Android 2.1, the Android package installer is said not to have properly checked the identity certificates, therefore apps claiming to come from trusted vendors could eventually end up being from another ‘vendor’.

“For example, an attacker can create a new digital identity certificate, forge a claim that the identity certificate was issued by Adobe Systems, and sign an application with a certificate chain that contains a malicious identity certificate and the Adobe Systems certificate. Upon installation, the Android package installer will not verify the claim of the malicious identity certificate, and create a package signature that contains… both certificates. This, in turn, tricks the certificate-checking code in the webview plugin manager (who explicitly checks the chain for the Adobe certificate) and allows the application to be granted the special webview plugin privilege given to Adobe Systems – leading to a sandbox escape and insertion of malicious code, in the form of a webview plugin, into other applications.” a Bluebox expert stated.

This way, hackers could have easily impersonate a 3LM signature and allow malware to take control of many devices, functions and apps, including Google Wallet features. Bluebox is stated to have notified Google of the security breach back in April.

However, up until now, Motorola is stated to have rolled out a patch for some of its devices. The experts say that there is no recorded breach of security using the above technique. Even so, a good practice is to only allow app installations from trusted sources and be weary of schemes that try to install specific ‘dodgy’ applications.

Warning: Nokia Lumia Cyan Update Could Brick your Smartphone

There have been reports that some Windows Phone users were experiencing BitLocker issues after upgrading their handset to the latest Cyan update, but a clear confirmation of who was experiencing it and how could not be made. It now seems that the users being affected are Windows Phone 8.1 Preview for Developer users who are using BitLocker full disk encryption through their companies, having their devices bricked after updating to the latest Cyan update.

Microsoft is said to have issues an official statement and recommends users to downgrade from the preview version of WP 8.1 to the commercial software before attempting to upgrade to the latest Lumia Cyan update. Along with the latter, the company has also suspended the preview program, which includes the 12400 build as well.

“We are currently investigating the issue. We have paused delivery of the update to customers using the Preview for Developers, and will resume once a fix is in place. Customers whose phones have been affected should use the Nokia Software Recovery Tool to return your Lumia to a normal commercial software state before downloading the Lumia Cyan update.”

Users who are still running on the Windows Phone 8.1 Preview for Developer software and noticed that the Cyan update is not available for them should know that Microsoft has postponed the Cyan rollout for the given preview software until a fix is available. For those affected by the BitLocker issue, Microsoft recommends using the Nokia Recovery Software Tool in order to return the handset to a commercial software in order to regain functionality of the device.

Google Chrome… A Battery Killer for Windows-based Laptops?

Forbes appears to have found a major flaw in Google’s popular browser, Google Chrome. It is said that the Chrome browser consumes more battery that Mozilla’s Firefox and even Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, significantly reducing the device’s battery life.

The main issue is said to be caused by the “system clock tick rate”, the feature responsible for waking up the CPU at certain times. Google Chrome is said to trigger the CPU’s ‘tick rate’ more often, drawing more power from the battery and reducing the overall battery life. Google’s browser is said to have a default timing of 1.000 ms, while Firefox and Internet Explorer is set at a Microsoft recommended setting of 15.625 ms.

“In fact, at 1.000ms the processor is waking 1000 times per second. The default, of 15.625ms means the processor wakes just 64 times per second to check on events that need attention. Microsoft itself says that tick rates of 1.000ms might increase power consumption by ‘as much as 25 per cent.'” said Forbes.

While the issue is present on Microsoft-based systems, it is said that the same cannot be said for Linux and Mac users. This is mainly due to the latter operating systems having different ‘tick rates’ compared to Microsoft’s OS. A web browser battery usage test reveals that Internet Explorer is still on top, followed by Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome and Opera.

Google apparently has no fix for the given issue at the moment, but users are able to go to Google Chrome’s bug report website and flag the issue in order to give it more priority.

Apple Might be Facing Problems with New Tech for the iPhone 6

It appears that even giant companies such as Apple are facing problems this year, having been rumoured that the iPhone manufacturer is currently facing some problems with key components for the upcoming iPhone 6.

The good news in all of this is that the latest iPhone 6 is said to break away from its yearly refreshed mainstream design and move towards something more ‘uncommon’ for the company. This is why there are rumours circulating that the plastic inserts above the antennas will be replaced by glass pieces, giving its general outlook a more appealing look and feel.

The bad news however comes from China, where Apple is apparently facing problems with the new iPhone 6 display. The new technology required to make the displays is reportedly giving quite a few headaches production-wise. China Times has stated that Apple is attempting to use new display technology in order to make its next generation of iPhones thinner.

This is nothing new for companies attempting to move towards newer and more sophisticated tech, though it requires meticulous steps to get the new tech to work properly. Apple is reportedly ditching the two-layers found in the ‘brightness enhancement films’ (BEFs) and moving to a one-layer design in order to achieve the required thinness. This might be why Apple’s suppliers are apparently facing problems, having to work out the final touches for the display in question.

Looking back at previous releases, Apple’s manufacturers were reportedly facing similar production problems before every major release, having the company and its suppliers eventually succeeding in releasing the final product before the deadline. The same thing might be happening now, though the outcome is unknown until the final product gets released.

Apple is said to launch its latest (rumoured 4.7-inch display) iPhone 6 model this year, having the launch date previously leaked as being set for September the 19th.

Warning: Latest HTC Sense Update Reportedly Screws Up Your Smartphone

If you have a HTC and already updated to the HTC Sense Version 6, then you might have already noticed your contacts deleted from both your phone and SIM, leaving the header on your text messages filled with numbers instead of names and your WhatsApp contact list empty. However, if you still haven’t updated to the latest HTC Sense rolled out over the weekend, our advice is to skip it until a fix is available.

Another issue related to the update has been described to be linked to the theme, having it default back to the Green Theme. This might not seem a major issue as you can go into the Settings and change it right back. Not this time apparently, having users reporting that although the theme changes, some loading bars and status messages will still appear in green, having it screw up the user’s preferred theme in some cases.

There have been discussions with HTC Customer Support regarding the ‘failed’ update, where they stated it is already being discussed and investigated. The customer support has also stated that nobody can roll back the smartphone in order to avoid the faulty update, meaning that users who already updated their HTC smartphones to HTC Sense Version 6 can only remain at the mercy of the company and their technical support.

Also, when asked about who was responsible for testing the update, the customer support team has pointed to the developers. This comes as a huge surprise since all software products, especially from big corporations such as HTC, must undergo strict testing cycles performed by a highly qualified Quality Assurance department in order to prevent such issues from occurring. However, HTC might have skipped this step (and we even wonder if they have such a department apparently).

What the HTC Sense 6 should have brought is an updated color palate and multiple themes for the UI, an updated interface and more news sources for the HTC BlinkFeed, an updated and simplified interface for the Camera, Galley and Apps Tray, as well as other features noted on HTC’s page. The company has not released any official news regarding the issues present in the update, nor stated when a fix would be available.

Apple’s Software Update Breaks Due To Expired SSL Certificate

Apple had been experiencing problems with their certificates this weekend. More specifically, the Software Update certificate required in order to communicate with Apple’s Software Update servers had apparently expired.

The expiry issue led to countless users being greeted with a message emphasising that “An Error has occurred. The certificate for this server is invalid. You might be connecting to a server that is pretending to be ‘swscan.apple.com’ which could put you confidential information at risk.” A graphical representation of the error can be viewed below:

The error has been spotted by a group of readers over at MacRumor, stating that they were greeted with the above mentioned error message when attempting to perform a software update on their macintosh computers. Also, the ‘swscan.apple.com’ address appears to be one of the several servers used by Apple to relay software updates.

The problem consisted of the certificate being valid from May 23rd 2012 up until May 24th 2014 and most probably Apple forgot to issue a renewal request for the certificate in question at a reasonable time, thus leading to the error described.

Furthermore, reports show that the same issue could have been the top culprit for the NSURLErrorDomain error -1012, which apparently had a similar connection problem with Apple’s Software Update servers.

Nonetheless, users who experience one of the two issues should contact Apple Support in order to clarify the situation and resolve it as quickly as possible, since constant updates are required to maintain and keep a computer safe from unwanted software.
