Smartphone AMOLED Panels Said to be Cheaper than LCD in Two Years

LCD panels have been previously used in smartphones and are still being used in most smartphones today. However, the newest display technology on the market is the AMOLED panel, used in smartphones such as the Samsung Galaxy S5 or Note 3, providing improved image quality, but at a much higher price than the LCD panels.

Manufacturers still use the LCD panels in order to bring smartphones at a much cheaper price, having the AMOLED panel’s price at 10-20% higher than the LCD. In an example, it is said that a 5-inch 1080 x 1920 pixels AMOLED panel is said to be 16% more expensive than the LCD counterpart. The good news is that as time passes, new technology becomes more demanding and prices drop. This is said to be the case for the AMOLED panel as well, having said that it will even out or be even cheaper than a LCD panel within two years.

“Until recently there have been few breakthroughs in the production of AMOLED displays, and the OLED industry seemed to be facing hard times,” said DisplaySearch’s Jimmy Kim. “If AMOLED costs fall below LCDs, as expected, it would lead to more opportunities for the OLED display industry, greater competition with LCD, and more choices for consumers.”

It is said that AMOLED production has recently started in China as well as Korea, with expectations for higher demand in the near future. Also, Korean manufacturer, Samsung, is said to have made significant achievements with its Quad HD 1440 x 2560 pixels screen by improving its grayscale and color accuracy, along with its brightness.

Xbox One Update Brings More GPU Bandwidth and Better Performance Ratios

The Microsoft Xbox One update released this week is said to bring features such as extended hard drive support, Twitter, HBO Go and other social media applications, along with other significant tweaks and updates. According to a tweet from Microsoft’s executive, Phil Spencer, the new Xbox One update surprisingly brings more GPU bandwidth to the Xbox One along with additional features aimed at developers as well.

The continuous dispute between PlayStation 4 and Xbox One performance since their launch last year has not affected Microsoft is any way, having the company telling developers to make the most of its performance. With this performance boost, which is about a 10% increase, Microsoft is apparently giving developers the ability to “choose how they want to utilize the extra GPU performance”.

A statement from a Microsoft representative however might shed some light on how the performance boost is achieved, reading that the update “will include new options for how developers can use the system reserve as well as more flexibility in our natural user interface reserve (voice and gesture).” This might point to the fact that developers should deliberately stop using Kinect and gesture technology in order to further boost game performance.

Whether the boost is achieved by slicing Kinect features or just by improving the drivers, Xbox One users will be happy either way with the performance boost.

Performance Drops Seen In Latest Xbox One Patch For Call of Duty: Ghosts

Usually when you hear about a Patch coming up, you think about fixes, improvements, better performance rating or eventually additional content. Well, this is not the case for the latest Call of Duty: Ghosts patch for Xbox One, since users are reporting performance drops after updating.

The Onslaught DLC along with its stability patch have degraded the performance for Microsoft’s latest next-gen console, leaing to slower framerate during cetrain points on the map. And as we all know it, framerate drops are the worst kind of issues anyone wants to face.

David Bierton from Digial Foundry has stated that when in the Stonehaven map, “it’s immediately obvious that things are not quite right. While the game does indeed hit 60fps in this stage, frame-rates are dramatically impacted when the whole level is in view, with metrics varying between 46-60fps as we run across the landscape. As frame-rates fall below the desired 60fps target, we also see the appearance of some screen-tear, adding some judder, making drops in smoothness more noticeable.”

It is also said that looking through the scope in certain points of the map, players could experience framerate drops as low as 30 FPS. Activision is expected to release a patch soon to fix the issue, though nobody knows how the buggy patch was released in the first place.
