Guild Wars 2 Base Game is Now Free-To-Play

Guild Wars 2’s base package is now available for free after the studio announced a revised pricing structure. However, to monetize the game’s player base, there will be a significant number of restrictions imposed on free accounts. These include limiting the character slots from 5 to 2, disabling Map chat and even prohibiting access to the forums. MMOs require micro-payments or a subscription to remain successful, but I’m quite wary that the hefty restrictions could deter new players from joining up and upgrading to premium accounts. This huge table below illustrates the differences between the main three account types:

Free Account Core Guild Wars 2 Account Heart of Thorns Account
Character Slots 2 5 5 or more*

According to the developer, this new strategy is designed to create a clear and transparent model showing how varying accounts differ and allowing players to see beforehand if the premium accounts are worth the extra. It seems the majority of MMOs end up going free-to-play barring World of Warcraft, and it will be interesting to see how the community reacts. Guild Wars 2 is an outstanding MMO and its latest free model reduces the barrier to entry.

Guild Wars 2 Beta Testing New Expansion

Many games have DLC and expansions. Some of these are made even before the game has been released and they are just left to be unlocked after a certain time. Guild Wars 2, on the other hand, has been around for nearly 3 years now and is yet to see any expansions. However, on the 26th of May, closed beta testing of “Heart of Thorns” begins.

Guild Wars 2 has seen updates that add new areas and tweak gameplay, but it has yet to see a true expansion. Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns isn’t going to up the level cap of 80 for your characters, but instead introducing a Mastery System. This offers master abilities such as hang-gliding and new collections that can earn legendary weapons.

The new adventure will take place in the Maguuma Jungle, it will include a new storyline and events along with new challenging boss battles. To aid you in the quest to conquer the jungle, there is a new profession being added with the expansion. The Revenant, which is heavily armoured and equipped to channel legendary powers of the Mists.

If this doesn’t tempt you into starting a new character, there are specialisations for your already matured character which allows you to unlock weapons that were previously unavailable, as well as new skills, traits and unique mechanics which will give your characters profession a new feel.

Another addition that Heart of Thorns brings, is that of a new game mode. Called Stronghold, in this PvP game mode offers a new way to play, you gather supplies and battle for control of heroes in an attempt to defeat the guild lord.

There are additions that allow you and fellow guild members to build a guild hall in the jungle of Maguuma. A new WvW map called Borderland.

To get in on the beta testing action there are a few hoops you have to jump through, but I’m sure there will be plenty of streamers out there ready to show off the new content. The beta is to specifically test the stability of the new PvE event structure along with using the new Revenant profession.

Testing is scheduled as follows:
– 11:30 a.m. Pacific Time (UTC-7) to 1:30 p.m. Pacific Time (UTC-7)
– 3:30 p.m. Pacific Time (UTC-7) to 5:30 p.m. Pacific Time (UTC-7)
– 7:30 p.m. Pacific Time (UTC-7) to 9:30 p.m. Pacific Time (UTC-7)
So look out at those times for the live streams, or if you are one of the lucky ones that got to beta test, make sure you are free!

Cheater Faces In-Game Death Penalty

Guild Wars 2 is a popular massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) which is sold over 3 Million copies worldwide. It’s also one of the places where usage of exploits is not tolerated. DarkSide, in-game character faced sweet justice after he was caught playing by unfair means like teleporting, survive coordinated attacks by other players and dominate player-versus-player combat. After other players complained and submitted proof videos, Security lead Chris Cleary executed the character and deleted all the avatars linked to the account. All the other accounts owned by the same player are were shut down.

“We do not need to see it in-game, sometimes good video evidence is enough for me to track down who it was. In this case, the video was enough for me to find out who it was and take action.” said Mr Cleary “Oh yah, he’s also banned”

YouTuber Shazbawt has posted a video named ‘RIP DarkSide’ showing the last moments of the character. He is stripped in public then waves and kills himself by jumping off a high bridge.

If cheaters are served justice in similar way that comes with Humiliation, some day there won’t be anymore. This move was appreciated by fans as “That’s pretty gangster” on the forums and it is actually pretty cool though. What do you think? Let us know in the comments section.

New Events Set To Rock Guild Wars 2 Beginning With ‘Origins of Madness’

NCSOFT and ArenaNet have just given gamers around the world their first taste of where the living world of Tyria is headed in 2014. In a teaser for Origins of Madness, the year’s first release coming 21st January, the game makers offer a glimpse of incredible new adversaries and the beginning of an epic end to a storyline that began more than a year ago.

Beginning with Origins of Madness, Guild Wars 2 players will find themselves pitted against the forces of arch-villain Scarlet Briar. The sinister sylvari engineer has worked behind the scenes throughout 2013, wreaking havoc through her minions and clockwork creations. Her exact motivations remain a mystery, for now. As players will see in the Origins of Madness teaser video (see below), Scarlet will unleash a brand-new mechanical monstrosity on the living world of Tyria: the Twisted Marionette! A gigantic robotic weapon of mass destruction, the Twisted Marionette can only be stopped by a concerted effort on the part of players. Scarlet’s machinations have also unearthed another threat in Bloodtide Coast. The Great Jungle Wurm is a huge multi-headed creature so powerful that only an army of players can challenge it.

We can’t wait to get stuck into the new content this year, and it’s great to see the world of Guild Wars continue to grow, I just wish I had more spare time to dedicate to playing it!

Guild Wars 2: Arrival of the Bazaar of the Four Winds Update Detailed

ArenaNet has announced its plans to maintain a two-week major release schedule for Guild Wars 2, and reveals the latest content update to the game’s Living Story, Bazaar of the Four Winds, going live on 9th July.

ArenaNet has been delivering new content to Guild Wars 2 at an increasing pace since January and from now on will maintain a 14-day update rate, bringing players exciting new features, events, rewards and storylines at a frequency unmatched by any other Western studio. Today’s decision affirms the studio’s continued commitment to that effort and means that players can expect Tyria to remain one of the most frequently updated and best supported online worlds in the industry.

In the newest update, Bazaar of the Four Winds, merchants are converging from all corners of Tyria to sell their wares. The gathering will feature more than just shady characters and risky trade because, this year, the mystical flying Zephyr Sanctum has landed, bringing magical crystals and amazing movement skills to traders and adventurers alike.

In addition to experiencing movement in a new way, players will partake in new themed-events and join in the thrill of the trade. Also included in this update:

  • Personal Quartz Node: Players completing the update will be able to harvest quartz in their home instances, allowing them to craft new recipes.
  • Zephyr Sanctum Model: Players who complete the Lessons from the Sky achievement will be awarded a miniature model of the Zephyr Sanctum, allowing them to view the ship at any time, even after it has flown away.

New Features

  • Account Achievement Reward System: Starting with this release, players can unlock rewards like exclusive new armour skins, weapon skins and permanent account bonuses as they earn achievement points. They can also earn laurels, gems, gold, powerful items, and PvP and WvW rewards as achievement scores grow.
