EVGA Reveals First Gaming Laptop @ CES 2016

CES 2016: EVGA is one of the largest companies in the hardware industry and has a huge line-up spanned across various departments including graphics cards, PC cases, motherboards and more! During CES 2016, the company announced their first gaming laptop which sports an Intel Core i7 6820HK and supports manual overclocking. This is impressive given the form factor which measures under 1.05 inches with the lid closed. Furthermore, the unit opts for a stylish, aluminium single piece unibody design. On another note, the laptop incorporates a GTX 980M with full overclocking support, and up to 4 hours of battery life. Please note, this is the mobile chipset and not a desktop-grade GTX 980 which many rumours suggested the final model would be.

The laptop’s 4K IPS display features superb viewing angles and vivid colours. Although, I was initially confused by the omission of NVIDIA’s G-Sync refresh technology which produces such a smooth gaming experience. After speaking to EVGA, it seems a higher-end model is in production with a G-Sync display. Another highlight is the keyboard which feels comfortable and extremely well made.

EVGA decided to include 16GB 2666MHz DDR4 memory, up to 256GB M.2 SSD storage, and a 2TB mechanical disk drive. Here we can see the impressive cooling design and native USB 3.1 Type-C connector.

The BIOS can be mouse driven and displays key system diagnostics as well as the ability to tweak almost anything from system boot order to CPU strap. Overall, this is a very impressive package and I’m interested to see what the price point is going to be. When this information is revealed, we will update the article accordingly.

MSI GT80 GTX 980M 8GB SLI Titan Laptop Review

Introduction

There are few things more exciting than reviewing a gaming laptop that you know has a reputation to live up to. Naturally, when the courier dropped off the GT80 Titan I couldn’t wait to get my claws into it. It has a specification list that puts most desktops to shame and has been paraded by MSI for a couple of months now as their latest and greatest flagship gaming laptop, promising nothing but the best for followers of MSIs “Dragon Army”. In preparation for meeting this monster in person, I had a brief look around the MSI website and was impressed to see just how much has been crammed into this machine. There were the usual claims of speed, “ultimate performance” and the likes, but below this was a tech spec list long enough to possibly justify these claims and had me wide-eyed with interest from the off.

I decided to leave to the official blurb behind and just dive in, as to not be influenced by big claims or rose-tinted glasses, so let the unboxing begin!

The box comes loud and proud with the MSI logo on it.  Now I know this laptop is big, but this box is huge. On opening it we see why, there are extra goodies in there too, I spy a backpack!

Removed from the outer box and separated from the backpack, this still weighs quite a fair amount

When you lift the lid of the outer box you are immediately presented with a rather nice black envelope sealed with an MSI sticker; we’ll open this in the next section

You can immediately see the laptop on the left in a protective bag and there is a cardboard section on the right which houses the power supply.

When you lift the laptop out of the box, there is a whole host of goodies waiting for you underneath

Nvidia GTX 980M Maxwell GPU Arriving In October

New rumours suggest that we could be seeing Nvidia’s newest flagship mobile GPU as soon as October. The flagship part, expected to be the GTX 980M, will be based on the Maxwell architecture design although the lithography is unknown – it could theoretically be 28nm or 20nm but 28nm seems most likely given TSMC’s 20nm roadmap. The die design that will be used will be the GM204 and the Maxwell GeForce Mobility line should spawn several GPUs, a speculated list is as follows:

  • Geforce GT 940M
  • Geforce GTX 950M
  • Geforce GTX 960M
  • Geforce GTX 970M
  • Geforce GTX 975M
  • Geforce GTX 980M

The Maxwell-based GTX 980M will offer a significant step up from the current Kepler GK104 based GTX 880M. If the GTX 980M does ship in October we could see it arrive in gaming notebooks such as those made by Aorus, ASUS Republic of Gamers and MSI.
