Corsair RM1000x 1000 Watt 80 PLUS Gold Fully Modular Power Supply Review

Introduction & Packaging

Corsair have been known to produce some of the best power supplies in the business and today, they look set to continue that trend with the release of their high-end RM1000x. Not everyone needs 1000w of power, of course, but when you do, it’s likely that you’re also the kind of system builder who demands the best performance from your components. Previous high-end PSUs from Corsair have reaped some of the best results we’ve ever seen, with ripple so low we thought there was an issue with our testing equipment, so to say we’re a little eager to see what this one can do would be quite the understatement.

“Corsair RMx series power supplies give you extremely tight voltage control, quiet operation, Gold-certified efficiency, and a fully modular cable set. Built with all Japanese 105°C capacitors, they’re a great choice for high-performance PCs where reliability is essential. 80 PLUS Gold efficiency reduces operating cost and excess heat, and Zero RPM fan mode ensures virtual silence at low and medium loads. And, the fully modular DC cables make builds and upgrades easy, with clean, great-looking results.” – Corsair

Equipped with all the usual safety features you would expect, as well as 80 Plus Gold efficiency, all Japanese capacitors, a ZeroRPM mode, a powerful 135mm fan, fully modular cable design and more, the RM1000x certainly ticks all the right boxes and to sweeten the deal, Corsair has given it a 7-Year warranty! That last part fills me with a lot of confidence.

1000W is a lot of power, more than enough to power an extreme workstation or gaming system with enthusiast overclocks and multiple graphics cards. As you can see, that 12V rail can push a very mighty 83.3A, more than enough power for

The packaging is very nicely designed, with a big and clear shot of the PSU on the front and that stand-out black and yellow Corsair branding.

Around the back, a quick technical rundown of the efficiency, hybrid fan mode and connectors.

There’s quite a lot of stuff in the box, with a durable protective bag for all the modular cables, a soft bag with the PSU inside, heavy-duty power cable,  cable ties, screws, and all the usual documentation.

Finally, you’ll also find the mains cable, which is nice and thick, making it durable, and comes with a good length.

SilverStone Launches SX500-LG SFX-L Power Supply

SFX power supplies have come a long way and don’t have many shortcomings in comparison with their ATX counterparts, except the fan limitation. The 100mm depth of the SFX form factor PSUs limit the fan size to 80mm and the smaller a fan is, the faster it has to spin and thus increasing the overall sound level as well as pitch sounds.

SilverStone has created the SFX-L form factor to combat just this issue. The larger form factor allows for the use of 120mm fans and thus reducing the overall acoustic levels from the PSU as well as allowing for higher performance due to the improved cooling.

A great new standard also needs a great first product. There is no doubt that the SilverStone SX500-LG PSU is such one with its 80 Plus Gold certification, modular flat cables and semi-fanless capability. You even get an ATX adapter bracket to mount it normal form factor cases.

Special Features:

  • Silent running 120mm fan with intelligent semi-fanless operation
  • Support SFX-L form factor and ATX via included bracket
  • High efficiency with 80 PLUS Gold certification
  • 100% modular cables
  • All cables made with flexible flat arrays
  • 500W continuous power output at 40℃ operating temperature rated for 24/7 operation
  • Class-leading single +12V rail with 40A
  • Strict ±3% voltage regulation and low ripple & noise
  • Support dual PCI-E 8/6pin connectors
  • Active PFC

We could already report on this new PSU a little while ago, and now it also got a price and release date. The SX500-LG has an $89.11 USD MSRP and should become available on the 28th of January.

Seasonic Presents its Latest PSU’s at Computex 2014

PSUs play a great role in desktop configurations and with the new technologies coming out soon, Seasonic saw fit to present their solutions as well. The company has revealed at Computex 2014 its 80 PLUS Platinum series 1050 W and 1200 W, the upgraded 80 PLUS Gold X series 1050 W and 1250 W models, as well as the 80 PLUS Bronze series.

Looking at the 80 PLUS Gold X series, Seasonic appears to have made the series fully modular. What that means is users will not have to deal with a whole bunch of unused cables taking space in their PC case, rather the company has given the ability to choose what cables the user requires and giving him the option to manually attach them. Also, the X series PSUs have been granted the Hybrid Silent Fan Control support, in addition to an upgraded D2D platform.

The latest and most powerful of the series, the 80 PLUS Platinum series, having an up to 92% efficiency, is said to feature a full array of ultra-efficient power supplies, ranging from 400 W to 1200 W, having all models fully modular. A special fanless model will be included in the series which Seasonic believes will be ‘sought’ by many users for its performance and noise level ratio.

Seasonic has introduced a new Honeycomb structure air vents design to both of its PSU series described above, including the 80 PLUS Bronze S12II, with efficiency of up to 85%, allowing for an optimum air circulation and heat dispersion. The S12II also seems to feature black-coloured flat cables and silent 120mm FLuid Dynamic Bearing fans. In addition, the 80 PLUS Bronze M12II Evo features all of the S12II’s characteristics, along with Fluid Dynamic Bearing fans and an extreme silent mode, activated when the PC is not requiring a lot of power to process applications.
