Costa Rica Has Been Fully Powered by Renewable Energy for 75 Days Straight

Costa Rica has achieved a major milestone in clean energy, having the country be fully powered by renewable energy for 75 straight days.

“The year 2015 has been one of electricity totally friendly to the environment for Costa Rica,” the state-owned power supplier Costa Rica Electricity Institute (ICE) said.

The milestone has been achieved with the help of heavy rainfall at four of its hydroelectric power facilities during the first quarter of 2015. What this means is that no fossil fuel was used during the months of January, February and March so far, having the country being powered by hydro power primarily, in conjunction with a mixture of geothermal, wind, biomass and solar energy.

To be noted is that the country is fairly small, having an area of 51,100 square km and a population of around 4.8 million. Another thing to take into account is that the country focuses more on tourism and agriculture, rather than heavy industry such as mining or manufacturing.

Still, Costa Rica has done an excellent job in developing its electricity sector, having the World Economic Forum ranking it as the second in Latin American countries behind only Uruguay with regards to electricity and telecommunications infrastructure.

Back in mid-2014, the Costa Rica government approved a $958 million geothermal energy project, having the first plants expected to generate about 55 MW and cost approximately $333 million to build, while two other are expected to output 50 MW.

Scientsits Find a Way to Wirelessly Transmit Energy across 55 Meters

Japanese scientists from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency have announced that they have been successful in transmitting energy wirelessly and with high accuracy, being able to microwave 1.8 kilowatts (just enough to heat a kettle) over a distance of 55 meters.

“This was the first time anyone has managed to send a high output of nearly two kilowatts of electric power via microwaves to a small target, using a delicate directivity control device,” a spokesperson for JAXA stated.

Before getting too excited, there is still a long way to go from here. The scientists’ ultimate goal is to set up solar satellites around 36,000 km of Earth’s surface in order to harness the Sun’s power and beam it back to the Earth’s surface via antennae. This means that, if proven successful, we could be looking at an unlimited energy solution. However, there is still a matter of taking everything from the planning stage to the actual application phase… and that takes time.

“But it could take decades before we see practical application of the technology – maybe in the 2040s or later,” the spokesperson stated. “There are a number of challenges to overcome, such as how to send huge structures into space, how to construct them and how to maintain them.”

Even so, given that the experiment will eventually take place and be successful, we are looking at one of the most important technological breakthroughs in human history.

Intel Team up with Fossil to Create Wearables

Wearables are the new big thing and everyone wants to be part of it. We’ve seen the watched from all the large technology companies presented, and Intel doesn’t want to be left back in that race. They announced on Friday that they would enter the a partnership with the accessory creator Fossil to further develop wearable technology for the fashion industry.

In the joint statement the two companies said they would team up “to identify, support and develop emerging trends in the wearable technology space” while they “work together on emerging products and technologies that will be developed for the fashion-oriented consumer.”

With Fossils 30 year of experience in wearables like watches, jewellery and wallets and Intel’s advances in small technology, this could bring on some cool new smart products and wearable that would appeal more to the average consumer then the current, not so pretty, smart watches. As it is now, it’s just technology that is wearable, not really integrated.

There aren’t any products planned yet, at least no specifics were mentioned and they also left the exit door open with the Safe Harbour clause. It’s a forward looking statement and should be treated as such, but I doubt Intel would make an announcement like this without being sure of their game plan.

They’re what I would personally class as the wonderful stuff, but this new one is certainly going under the weird column.

Between 33 and 5 million years ago a dinosaur stopped to take a massive dump, before moving along and forgetting all about it. Skip forward a few million years and that deposit is on a plinth in an auction house, just waiting for you to make a bid for what could be a truly unique conversation starter next time you have a date over.

Knows as a Coprolite, a fancy word for fossilized feces, the fossil is currently on sale at the I. M. Chait gallery in Los Angeles, California. With the following description on the listing:

This truly spectacular specimen is possibly the longest example of coprolite – fossilized dinosaur feces – ever to be offered at auction. It boasts a wonderfully even, pale brown-yellow coloring and terrifically detailed texture to the heavily botryoidal surface across the whole of its immense length. The passer of this remarkable object is unknown, but it is nonetheless a highly evocative specimen of unprecedented size, presented in four sections, each with a heavy black marble custom base, an eye-watering 40 inches in length overall.
