PC Sales Continue to Decline Despite Windows 10 Launch

The uptake of Windows 10 has been extraordinary thanks to the free-upgrade promotion and already been installed on more than 110 million devices. This was achieved within a 2-month period and exceeded Microsoft’s most-optimistic expectations. However, this resounding success story doesn’t indicate a sudden upturn in PC sales figures. According to data from Gartner, PC sales declined 7.7 percent during the third quarter.

This isn’t a shocking revelation as PCs are more than powerful enough for the average end-user to last a considerable amount of time. Additionally, the Windows 10 figures relate to existing computers being upgraded. Unlike other operating system launches, consumers don’t feel the need to purchase a new system just to access Microsoft’s latest software. Whatever the case, it seems the declining PC trend will continue for some time as vendors try to make other sectors more profitable.

On another note, Windows 10 is being used on more than traditional PCs. The operating system is being embedded into mobile devices and even the Xbox One. It’s interesting to see the impact of tablets and discussion regarding their usefulness. Can they replace PCs, or only act a supplementary device?

Do you think the future of traditional PCs is very bleak?

Ubisoft Financial Reports Shows What Platform Takes Centre Stage When It Comes to Gaming

This year’s Q1 financial report coming from Ubisoft reveals what platform gamers are more interested in. If you thought that the battle was between Sony’s PS4 and Microsoft’s Xbox One, you are bound to be amazed. The report shows that the company sold twice as many PS4 games compared to Xbox One titles, having Microsoft’s console plunge down even below PC sales figures. In other words, PS4 games account for 27% of software sales, PC for 23% and Xbox One for just 11%.

The results also show how PC gaming has risen 14% compared to last year’s financial report, showing that the PC has been getting a lot more attention and is moving close to surpassing even the PS4 next year. In contrast, the Xbox One sales fell down 14% compared to last year, showing that gamers are more likely to drop Microsoft’s console in favour of Sony or the PC. Even Nintendo’s Wii and Wii U saw an extremely slow sales figure, coming in with only 3%. However, the figure was expected to be low, since Ubisoft did not release any new Wii U title.

But enough about reports and statistics. What do you think? Are you a PS4 gamer or more inclined to switch to Sony’s console, or are you happy with the PC or other platforms? Let us know in the comments below.

Grand Theft Auto V Sales Went Through The Roof

All this Grand Theft Auto V hype was bound to bring something like this sooner or later, so the recent sales figures won’t be a surprise to anyone. But before revealing them, let’s have a look at the sales technique used for the recent title and the Grand Theft Auto IV title.

First and most importantly, the Grand Theft Auto brand has been around for enough time to get players’ appreciation. Therefore, you mix something that players know, add some extra features and improve the graphics and you got yourself something to sell.

Secondly, the developer seems to have taken a unique platform approach. I mean GTA IV and GTA V were released on consoles first and then re-released on the PC one year later, so the hype won’t go away, but rather increase again a year later.

Given the above, we know that GTA V sales figures for PS3 and Xbox 360 brought over a billion in revenue, having the PS4 an Xbox One bring a sizeable amount too. Once the PC version launched, it sold about a million copies in just the first day.

Taking all that into account, can you guess the total number of copies sold? No? Well, let me tell you then. Grand Theft Auto V sold more than 52 million copies to date and I think the number will increase in the following months.

What this means is that Grand Theft Auto V is now the 4th best-selling title of all time, just below Wii Sports, Tetris and Minecraft. Pretty cool, eh?

Sony Is Pleased with Bloodborne’s Sales Figures

Bloodborne turned out to be a great success for both From Software and Sony Entertainment. They say that PS4 sales figures went through the roof, despite the title’s new IP. If you played the title, then you might not be surprised that a lot of people enjoyed it as you did.

Sony’s UK director, Fergak Gara, said that they had plans to surpass the Soul series in terms of sales, which they did, and they even did more than that. It looks like their expectations have been met and even their ambitions proved to be ‘conservative’. The figures show Bloodborne sold more than 1 million copies since it was launched, but recent unconfirmed figures show that we are talking about even more copies than that.

However, the title’s success was achieved by having it released in a relatively quiet timeframe in terms of game releases and providing a sizeable demand for users looking for something new to try out.

Once players had a taste for it, word got out and it finally became as big as it is today. But what are your thoughts about it? Do you like Bloodborne? Are you waiting for a sequel or something similar? Let us now!

Tomb Raider Scores Global Franchise Record with Over 8.5 Million Copies Sold

While we all knew that Crystal Dynamic’s Tomb Raider was a big success back in 2013, we did not know how big up until now. It seems that Tomb Raider has been classified as the IP’s biggest success and even surpassed other series’ sales with over 8.5 million copies sold.

“Crystal Dynamics, a Square Enix studio, today announced that the award-winning TOMB RAIDER® (2013) has sold more than 8.5 million copies worldwide, more than any other game in the legendary Tomb Raider franchise’s history. Originally released in March 2013, the game also set franchise sales records for its first day and month.”

The title still sells for a fair £14.99 price on Steam or other sources, but the sales record essentially means that Microsoft has potentially secured a next big hit with their Xbox One exclusivity agreement for the upcoming Rise of the Tomb Raider title.

Mental Millet Part 2: Phone Specifications and Price

Yesterday we reported on Chinese phone manufacturer Millet processing an incredible 1.62 million phone orders over a non-stop 72-hour period, blasting the local Chinese market with their latest technology release. Today, we’ve uncovered some more information on what’s contained within this most-wanted piece of kit thanks to MyDrivers.

Simply called the ‘Millet 5’, or ‘m 5’ if that’s a little too lengthy, this latest phone offering has been described as a flagship and much anticipated release for Millet. First batches of these phones have been selling for 3000 yuan ($490 US) and contain some pretty kick-ass features. Compared to their previous release, the Millet 4, this new smartphone offers you a slightly larger screen, a more sturdy design and a little more pressure on the wallet – nothing that sounds too much like an incredible advancement.

Containing a 5.7-inch screen and a powerful Xialong 810 processor (64-bit, eight core, 20nm), the Millet 5 is setting users back an extra 1,001 yuan ($163 US) compared to the previous Millet release. But interestingly enough, this phone certainly doesn’t follow the often stigmatized “cheap Chinese” technology route – providing fingerprint technology for users to unlock their phones (like is seen in the iPhone 5) and some very careful consideration is said to be put into providing a sturdy design.

We’ll continue to report as more information is made available to us here at eTeknix.
