Trial by Combat – As Outdated As You Think?

We’ve all seen the dramas, times when people are insulted by another person or they’ve had some disagreement over actions someone has done. In modern days, this normally involves a few choice words and maybe a small brawl outside, but these can even end up in court, with people claiming financial revenge for their actions. One that is very rarely used, but is seen a lot on TV is trial by combat, but the tradition is all but dead.

Trial by combat was originally created in germanic law, with two people fighting in single combat, the winner being proven right in the eyes of the law and the witnesses. The tradition died off as legal systems relied more on facts and evidence, with it rarely ever invoked because of the “barbaric” nature of it.

Back in 2002, Leon Humphreys challenged the DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency) to trial by combat. His original charge was to pay a £25 motoring fine for not informing the DVLA about his motorcycle being off the road. The magistrates saw this as a waste of time though and fined him £200 with another £100 in costs; it didn’t quite work out for him.

In 2015, this came before the Staten Island Supreme Court when a layer cited the right in the case where he is being accused of helping a client commit fraud. Richard Luthmann states that trial by combat was never outlawed in New York state or even the United states. Luthmann, a Game of Thrones fan, stated that “They want to be absurd about what they’re trying to do, then I’ll give them back ridiculousness in kind”.

So while an old tradition, you never know who would invoke the right to single combat in order to defend their actions in the eyes of the law and their makers. Something work keeping in mind next time you’re stuck with an odd fine, just be ready to fight if they agree!

America Vs Japan Robot Fight: Operation Crowd Funding!

Let’s take a minute to remember back to the days of sitting in front of the TV watching insane robots mutilate each other in an arena full of deadly traps. Now fast forward to 2015 and our love for robots has grown, which has resulted in movies such as Real Steel and mechs introduced into games such as Call of duty. So what about real life? Well nothing interesting really, apart from a massive grudge match being ignited online thanks to American and Japan building mechs for whatever reason.

Sources have gone quiet lately, but it has surfaced that America has started a crowd-funding campaign to raise $500,000 to help finish and upgrade the robot. But why would you want to donate your hard earned cash to help build something that will probably get smashed like a bug? “Because we’re going to make history, and it will be the most patriotic dollars that they can spend in 2015,” Brinkley Warren, a co-founder, told Ars with pride.

At the time of writing, the campaign has reached over $261,000 with 28 days to go. All is not lost, however, the founders has given a long term goal plan in case funds reached up to $1.5 million; which will end up ranging from high-performance track bases for ultimate speed and eevn a Hollywood paint job. Funnily enough, a life safety system only comes in at $1.25 million, which means moving fast is more important than safety #Murica!

Now a Kickstarter campaign wouldn’t be worth entering if there wasn’t something for the donator. The basic $5 gets you a mutual online handshake, but the best donation of $10,000 allows you to join the pit crew at the fight and be hands on. Personally if I had the spare cash, I would donate $5,000 and punch a Prius.

Who do you think will win? America with brute force or Japan with engineering marvels? Are you going to donate? Let us know in the comments.

Wing Commander 4 Intro with Remastered Orchestral Score Shown Off

Being a kid in the 90s allowed me to grow up along with some pretty amazing games and I was a huge fan of space simulation games. There were the X-Wing and Tie-Fighter games, but also the Wing Commander series that gave the space-fight and simulation fans a battleground to play on.

George Oldziey is the composer behind the music from three of the Wing Commander games and last year he launched a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter with the goal to record an orchestral version of the Wing Commander music, the way he had in mind when creating it. The fans weren’t shy to donate and the funding quickly raised over $40,000.

We can now get a first look into what that sounds like as he Oldziey uploaded a remix video with some of the recordings already done. The word remix is used as he didn’t have access to the original footage for this video, so the orchestral music is just put on top of the original video. This results in the music being a lot louder than the voice acting and it isn’t perfect. But it’s the music we want to hear here anyway, so that is okay and it sounds like it should. Somehow space and orchestral music just go great together, don’t; you think?

Pacific Rim Starts Shooting In November

Pacific Rim is an action movie with giant robots (jaegers) fighting giant monsters (kaiju) it was released for the summer back in 2013 it had a soft opening at the U.S box office, but the feature did well enough at the international box office to earn itself a sequel more giant metal elbow rocket punching fun for all.

During an interview with yahoo, Guillermo del Toro revealed that things are quickly moving forward with the sequel and Del Toro said Pacific Rim 2 is starting shooting in November. Del Toro added, “We are deep into designing the robots, the kaijus…having fun planning the battles. Very exciting news, it’s good to see they’re putting extensive dedication into the designs of monsters and robots to hopefully make them as memorable as the first wave of monsters and mechas.

It’s exciting news for pacific rim fans although the gap between the first film and the sequel seems very big 2013 release and a 2017 release seems like a very large time to plan a sequel lets just hope Del Toro can deliver an interesting story and plenty of mecha fighting.

Are you excited for Pacific Rim 2? Pacific Rim 2 is scheduled to be released on August 4th 2017.

Lets Get Ready To Robot Rumble!

Gundam, Evangelion, Tengen Toppa Gurren Laggan. If you’ve recognised those three names, you’ll be aware of the thing they have in common. Giant Robots. In response to this we have aspired as a race to make giant robots, but now two companies want to take it further. They want to fight!

Suidobashi Heavy Industry, a Japanese based company, already announced that they had constructed the Kuratas. A giant four-wheeled (at the end of legs) robot capable of using its built in BB gatling gun to fire a whopping 6,000 pellets a minute! If that’s too violent you can also replace it with a water cannon, and it’s even up for being purchased!

Meanwhile across the water in the USA, MegaBots wants to create a sport behind fighting with giant robots. So what’s the sensible thing to do? Of course, challenge Japan to fight against their own robot! Designed as a giant bipedal (two legged) robot, the robot looks to copy those designs found in cartoons and anime.

Suidobashi’s founder Kogoro Kurata replied with:

“Yeah, I’ll fight. We can’t let another country win this. Giant robots are Japanese culture”

With no set date or location, we can only wait for that moment where it’s revealed and suddenly it all becomes a reality. In his response though Kogoro did state that he wanted the fight to take place with physical weapons, not paintball or bb guns.

Thank you the Verge for the information.

Intel Announce 10nm Chips Capabilities and Release Plans

We reported early in 2014 of Intel’s 14nm “Fab 42” plant remaining closed and the rumors surrounding 10nm chip manufacturing that came with it – from recent reports it now seems like it’s a a reality.

As IBM and NVIDIA have teamed up to win the next generation of top-level US government supercomputers, Intel is not to be left in the dust. After 50 years of global supercomputing, the Intel platform occupies a massive 85.5% of all machines, with a reported 97% ownership in new age systems. Today, Intel have announced the details of some of their planning in high-performance computing.

The announcements have come to us thanks to CNBeta and Chiphell, these are listed in dot point form as:

  • The third-generation Xeon Phi family, codenamed “Knights Hill”, will use Intel’s 10nm process. This is the first publicly identified 10nm product, as well as Intel Omni-Path fiber optic interconnection technology. Intel’s upcoming second generation “Knights Landing” will be the first commercial system set to debut early next year.
  • The industry’s interest in Xeon Phi is more concentrated. There are already a large number of customers looking to order Knights Landing, of which more than 50 percent will use the processor version, and the rest set to utilize the PCI-E accelerator card version. The total computing capacity is said to contain more than 100 PFlops (10 quadrillion floating-point calculations).
NOTE: Using the Intel Xeon Phi to accelerate your system is done through a PCI-E expansion card, this card must be used with Xeon processors and can only be used as a coprocessor. The next generation will have separate processor and coprocessor versions.
  • Knights Landing’s latest implementations include: Los Alamos, Sandia Supercomputers “Trinity”, the US Department of Energy National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) ultra-count “Cori”, Earth Science Enterprise DownUnder GeoSolutions, large-scale cooperation projects in SGI and the National Supercomputer Center IT4 Innovations projects in Europe (to deploy large clusters).
  • Omni-Path Interconnect architecture with provides 100 Gbps of bandwidth, fiber-optic switching and medium-sized clusters. Comparing this to the now popular InfiniBand, latency can be reduced up to 56%. The product architecture will use a 48 switch chip, in comparison to InfiniBand using up to only 36.
  • Intel Fabric Builders project has started, created based on the ecosystem Omini-Path. The Intel Parallel Computing Center also announced their expansion will be the construction of 40 facilities in 13 countries and regions.
  • Intel Enterprise Edition for Lustre v2.2 has been scheduled for release.

That’s quite a lot of information to take in one hit, so we will continue to report on this as the story develops. We’re sure that Intel will now sit down and take a look at these siz points one by one in the near future, so help keep it streamlined and easy to track for consumers.

Anonymous Hacks KKK Twitter Due to Ferguson Threats

As part of their new #OpKKK campaign, the well known internet group ‘Anonymous’ has taken control of the Klu Klux Klans public twitter account in a bid to fight back against some recent actions.

The KKK’s USA branch decided to ‘call out’ Anonymous in a tweet, stating: “We are continuing to read Anonymous threats with much amusement. Still no action taken. #Cowards #HoodsON” in which Anonymous replied by swiftly taking control of the account just mere hours later.

This fight was originally sparked by the KKK stating they will take “lethal force” against Ferguson protestors in the aftermath of the upcoming grand jury decision regarding Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson. They did so by distributing flyers around the city marking their claims, this being easily completed due their headquarters being based only 75 miles south of the American town.

Reading “Attention: To the terrorists masquerading as “peaceful protestors”! We will use lethal force as provided under Missouri law to defend ourselves”. Now, Anonymous is known for many controversial take-overs and activist actions in their short history, sometimes in we’ve seen them band together for the good of the ‘common man’. This is another example how a bunch of computer-savvy tech enthusiasts can pit their minds together for good, no matter how illegal it may be.

On Wednesday, a KKK leader appeared on MCNBC to back-up their flyers threats, claiming they support the Ferguson locals and that this campaign had greatly boosted their recruitment drives. On Friday, Anonymous began their attack by doxing KKK members residing in the Ferguson/St. Louis region, then later on taking control of KKK’s twitter account in retaliation to the attacks.

Orlando Bloom Throws Punch In Justin Bieber’s Direction… And Then Goes Back for More!

There is normal life and then there is… showbiz life. This is the case of Justin Bieber allegedly receiving a punch in his direction from well-known movie star, Orlando Bloom, after the two meet face to face at a restaurant in Ibiza.

Metro reports that Hollywood star, Orlando Bloom, has seen Justin Bieber at the Cipriani restaurant in Ibiza in the early hours of Wednesday morning. At dawn, it all went ‘bananas’ and ended with Orlando reportedly going for a punch towards Justin’s face after the ‘youngster’ made a rude remark about Bloom’s ex-wife, Miranda Kerr.

Information dating back to their break-up reveals that Orlando and Kerr decided to split in October 2013 after rumors were going around that Bieber was spending too much time flirting with Orlando’s ex-wife at Victoria’s Secret show in 2012. The tension in their marriage apparently was too much for the two and they later broke up.

Sources for The Sun tell a different story, where Bieber made the remarks regarding Orlando’s ex-wife after the Hollywood star attempted to punch him. It is said that a ‘shouting match’ began between the two, having their friends eventually calming them down.

The little fiasco appears to have gotten worse when Justin uploaded a photo of Miranda to his Instagram account, featuring her with a crown symbol, before swiftly deleting it. The reason for its deletion is still unknown.

Twitter fans are also showing their support for Orlando (which is to be expected), while Bieber’s fans don’t look too impressed by his reckless behavior.

It is said that representatives for both parties have been contacted by various press, however there have been no official statements for neither of them up until now.
