SilverStone EP03 USB 3.0 Charging Hub with Display Review

Introduction


USB hubs are nothing new and an essential tool for port multiplying which allows you to connect more devices to your system than you have ports available. This is particularly useful for mobile systems that come with very few ports on their own, but a stationary system can benefit equally from a good USB hub. In today’s review, I am taking a closer look at SilverStone’s EP03 USB 3.0 hub with built-in supercharger function and an integrated display for monitoring voltage and current on all ports.

At heart, SilverStone’s EP03 is a 4-port USB 3.0 hub capable of 5 Gbps transfer speeds. It is naturally also compatible with both USB 2.0 and 1.1 devices on both the host port and the individual connectors. That in itself is nothing new, but everything else is. In fact, this is a pretty smart hub.

When you pick the EP03 hub up and hold it in your hands, you have no doubt that this is a quality built hub. It feels sturdy and it also looks pretty good with its simple plastic case and top plate made of brushed aluminium.

The top is also what instantly reveals one of the features that make this USB hub unique, the built-in display. You can watch the current and voltage in real-time on the display for each of the four ports. Port selection is handled by the small button next to the display which lets you cycle the four ports.

As the display already indicates, this isn’t just a USB hub for peripheral and drive connection, it is also an intelligent charging station that can satisfy users’ increasing demand for fast charging of power-hungry mobile devices. It can deliver 2A to each of the four ports simultaneously and is fully compliant with the USB power delivery specifications 1.2 (BC 1.2).

In addition, the built-in protection mechanism ensures the EP03 can deliver power evenly and safely according to the number or the state of battery charge of connected devices. All these features can also be used to check if a new/replacement charging cable is up to the task and comes with the proper specifications compared to your original cable.

The SilverStone EP03 comes with an AC adapter included which both ensures that you have enough current to all ports, but also allows you to use it as charging station with the use of a host system. It comes with built-in over current and over voltage protections too, so all your connected devices should be safe.

The hub is built around a Genesys Logic GL3522 chipset which actually is a USB 3.1 Gen 1 controller, but that just leaves internal headroom and ensures the best possible connection.

SilverStone always has some great looking packages for their devices and it’s no different for this USB 3.0 hub with fast charging and power meter. It presents itself colourful to the user and begs to be taken home. I know I wouldn’t walk past it.

EVGA Announces Low Power Nvidia GTX 950

Even with Pascal just around the corner, Nvidia and their partners are continuing to release some new Maxwell GPUs. Today, we’ve been treated to a new lineup of Nvidia’s GTX 950 from EVGA. The biggest and one of the few differences between the new GTX 950’s and the old ones are the reduction of TDP from 90W to 75W. In all other regards, the cards are just the same old GTX 950 we’ve come to expect.

Like the ASUS and MSI cards from before, these new GTX 950’s are somehow able to reduce their power consumption from 90W down to 75W while using the same die. Some of the 75W TDP models retain the 6pin PCIe power connector, allowing them to reach 1127Mhz base and 1317Mhz boost clock. For the ones that delete the 6pin PCIe power connector, they peak at a lower 1075Mhz base and 1253 boost.

For the segment of the market the GTX 950 targets, any reduction of power consumption is important. Not everyone has a PSU with a 6pin connector and removing it makes sense if you can keep the same performance characteristics. There is a total of 8 new cards EVGA has launched today and they are all available now.

Lexar 512GB Portable SSD D512 USB 3.0 Solid State Drive Review

Introduction


Today we are taking a closer look at fast external storage, more specifically Lexar’s newest portable SSD called the D512. Lexar also offers the drive in a smaller D256 version with 256GB capacity, but I have the pleasure to have to big 512GB model on the test bench today.

Right away we see that we have a small and compact drive which is perfect for a portable unit. On top of that, it is also a very light drive that you barely will notice when you have it packed next to the rest of your items. So we have a strong portable drive right of the start, but what about the performance. Performance has to match and that’s where a portable SSD shines over a flash drive. Both types of drives use NAND technology, but other than that there are big differences.

Lexar’s portable SSD is capable of sequential transfer speeds up to 450MB/s when reading and 245MB/s writing which is pretty nice for a portable storage solution that is as small and light as the D512. The is no official rating for random performance, but we’ll naturally have a look at that once we get the benchmarks rolling.

The tiny D512 provides plenty of space for you while you are on the go and travel about. Whether you want to take along you movie collect, music library, and photos, you’re covered with plenty of storage. It is also an optimal drive to unload all your vacation photos onto from memory cards and portable capture devices.

One of the unique things that come with the D512 is the capacity meter on the front. The first five LEDs act as such and will light up as the drive gets filled with data. This allows you an instant view on the drive fillage as soon as you plug it into your system. The second unique feature works in conjunction with Lexar’s other Workflow products. The new portable SSD uses the same form factor and connector which makes it compatible with the Workflow drive hubs. Just plug the drive in and you are good to go. I love the Workflow system so much and use it almost every day for my work here at eTeknix.

The drive is also highly compatible when it comes to volume setup as it supports both NTFS, FAT32, and exFAT. On its own, the drive is fully plug-and-play and doesn’t require any drivers or tools of any sort. This naturally originates from USB standard that is plug-and-play by definition.

Lexar is part of the Micron Group which also means that the drive is equipped with some of the best NAND flash on the market and that has undergone high-grade quality checks before assembly.

Lexar packed the 512GB Portable SSD in a neat white box that shows the drive’s look and basic specifications on the top.

The bottom of the box also has the system requirements, which is a USB port, as well as the basic specification again, but in several languages.

Inside the box, you will find the portable SSD itself as well as a USB 3.0 cable.

Both sides of the drive are covered with a protective plastic film to make sure it arrives scratch-free in your hands. It also gives you that little bit of joy it is to remove the film from your brand new device.

SilverStone TS11-C USB 3.1 Docking Station Review

Introduction


We have tested quite a few of SilverStone’s storage solutions in the past and while the new TS11-C external hard drive docking station might look like previous models, it is special as it comes with the newest technologies. In the past, we have been limited by the USB 3.0 protocol and its maximum 5Gbps transfer speeds even though we connect a 6Gbps capable drive to the docking station. SilverStone’s new TS11-C should make up for this as it uses the USB 3.1 connector for a transfer speed of up to 10Gbps.

SilverStone’s TS11-C is an external hard drive docking station that is made to accommodate either a 2.5-inch or a 3.5-inch drive at speeds up to 10Gb/s with its USB 3.1 Gen2 capability and it also features the new Type-C connector. Since USB is plug and play, as long as you have your USB drivers installed, which also means that this docking station is plug and play. You don’t need any additional drivers to get going, just plug it in, add a drive and turn it on. It is almost a given with a docking station like this, but it’s still worth highlighting that the TS11-C supports USB Attached SCSI protocol (UASP) which allows much better transfer rates in systems that support this compared to those who don’t.

The body itself is gold coloured and made of aluminium. This aids the passive unit itself to stay cool, but it also helps the inserted drive to dispose of its heat. This isn’t as much an issue when used with solid state drives, but mechanical drives need quite a bit of cooling. The cover itself is made of plastic to prevent your drives from being scratched. The top slot cover is a two-piece item that automatically folds back as you insert a drive. The small gap for 2.5-inch drives also helps with the positioning on top of the connector.

The docking station is built around an ASMedia ASM1351 chipset that provides this unit with its USB 3.1 Gen2 capability with speeds up to 10Gbps through the Type-C connector. The included USB cable uses a normal type USB connector which also makes it easy backward compatible with USB 3.0, 2.0 and 1.1. The internal SATA3 interface is also backward compatible with SATA2 and SATA1 drives, as it should be.

With an external device like this that is highly portable, you might want to take it on the road with you too in order to connect extra storage to your mobile devices such as laptops and modern smartphones. SilverStone thought of this too and added a power adapter with exchangeable plugs to be used in pretty much every place on earth no matter what plug type or voltage available.

ASUS Travelair N Wireless 1TB Hard Disk Review

Introduction


When it comes to storage you can either go the ordinary and boring route, or you can opt for something that breaks with the norm with more features than you would expect. I’m taking a closer look at ASUS’ Travelair N today which is a portable USB 3.0 hard disk drive that also works wirelessly with a built-in access point, comes with an SD card reader built-in, and has One-Touch NFC capabilities on top of the 1TB storage capacity.

The ASUS Travelair N ‏(WHD-A2) is a 1TB portable USB 3.0 hard disk drive at heart and that in itself isn’t without. You can easily carry 500 movies, thousands of photos, songs, and files with you where ever you go. An ordinary portable drive has some limitations on the road, mainly the connection interface. What if you would like to access the drive from your mobile phone or tablet? What if you are far from a power outlet? Well, that is no problem with the Travelair N that comes with built-in wireless network capabilities and a battery.

Using the 2.4GHz band, the Travelair N can connect to pretty much any wireless devices available. It is compatible with IEEE 802.11b, g, and n-style connections which cover the entire spectrum of the wireless band. Simply touch your NFC-supported smart phone or tablet to the drive and you can browse your media library and files straight away.

The final feature of the drive itself is the built-in SD card slot that lets you back up your data from memory cards with simple steps. This is the perfect solution to empty the memory cards onto a larger storage medium and keep shooting those photos while you got the opportunity.

ASUS created the AiDrive companion app which is available on almost any platform: iPhone, iPad, Kindle Fire, or Android devices. The app features an intuitive user interface to let you quickly and easily view and share your photos, videos, and files.

The Travelair N can connect with up to five devices simultaneously when transferring files and up to three devices when streaming movies in HD quality. This allows you to easily share a single drive between multiple systems, devices, and people.

A portable drive needs to have a better resistance to environmental hazards and the Travelair N features an IP43-rated water-resistant design. This should guarantee a protection from accidental splashes and spills onto the drive.

With all the talk about USB 3.0 for PC connections and wireless for mobile devices, we shouldn’t forget that we also can connect a drive like this to all our other smart devices with USB or wireless capabilities, may they be gaming consoles, smart TVs, or something else.

ASUS packed the Travelair N in a horizontal shaped box which is unlike most that come more square. That’s very fitting for a drive like this that is anything but ordinary. The front will let you know what you purchase in a simplistic design including features and capacity.

On the rear of the box, you find a lot more details to the different functions such as environmental protection, wifi, and NFC.

Inside the box was a USB 3.0 cable, a warranty card and safety notice as well as the quick start guide. Normally there would also be an AD/DC power adapter for charging purposes, but that was missing in my review sample.

SilverStone MMS01 Military-Grade USB 3.0 Enclosure Review

Introduction


If you are living an active lifestyle and still want to carry around your storage while keeping it protected the best way possible, then you need something other than a normal portable storage device. There are many rugged portable drives on the market by now and we’ve had a look at several of them already. But what if you already have a drive and want to turn that into a safe portable storage drive? Then you need something like SilverStone’s MMS01 military-grade USB 3.0 portable enclosure. Today I’m taking a closer look at how this works and how well it works.

SilverStone’s MMS01 is a thick protective enclosure that has been IP65 certified which makes it dust proof and water-resistant. The enclosure doesn’t stop there, it has been tested and proven to be immune or resistant to rapid temperature change, vibration, 1.2-meter drop, salt spray, sand, and fungal growth. You shouldn’t fully submerge a setup like this, but other than that your data’s drive is well secured.

Durability doesn’t mean that we need to sacrifice performance and the MMS01 is bound to show us some great numbers. Powered by the USB 3.0 bus and with UASP support, the only limitation is the 5 Gbps of the USB bus. The enclosure is equipped with a USB 3.0 type B port and the drive is backward compatible with USB 2.0 and 1.1. Thanks to the USB interface, we don’t require any extra drivers or anything and it will work as plug-and-play with both Windows and Mac OS systems.

Inside the enclosure there is room for a drive with a height of up to 9.5mm, allowing you to mount most 2.5-inch hard disk drives. Solid state drives with the thinner 7mm height aren’t a problem either and that is what I’ll be using in my tests today.

With a weight of just 280 gram, the MMS01 is a lightweight unit despite its great protection. This is an important factor when we deal with mobile drives as no one wants to carry unnecessary weight with them. If you are looking for an enclosure that can protect your drive in the harshest environment possible, the MMS01 might be the one to get.

EVGA Introduces GeForce GTX 980 Ti VR Edition

Virtual Reality is the new thing for 2016 as there is more than one VR device on its way. To pull this kind of hardware you need the rest of your hardware to play ball too, at least if you want the best possible experience. EVGA now released two new graphics cards that are the same except for the attached cooler. The new cards are called the EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Ti VR EDITION and come either with a reference cooler or the much beloved ACX 2.0+ cooler.

The new GTX 980 Ti VR EDITION is built around Maxwell architecture and comes with 6GB GDDR5 memory and 2816 CUDA cores, much like any other GTX 980 Ti card. The difference with this one is that one of the HDMI ports have been moved to the other end of the card and thereby acts as an internal connector rather than a rear one.

What might look silly at first does have its reason as the VR EDITION comes with an included 5.25-inch drive bay. This unit offers you a front HDMI 2.0 port that will be connected to the internal one on the graphics card as well as two USB 3.0 ports. The idea behind this is to give you easy access for connecting and disconnecting your VR device and input devices used at the same time.

EVGA didn’t reveal a pricing or availability at this time, but we can expect it to be priced very similar to existing GTX 980 Ti cards and with a slight premium added for the extra functionality.

The basic story plot of the game is pretty generic in its form, you have to save the president. But other than that, it looks pretty fun. You travel the dying world of Kyrron as it’s consumed by its neighboring sun. You’ll then have to shell, shock and shatter your way through vicious, bloodthirsty predators, an augmented alien species, and the remnants of an ancient race re-animated, with more than 10 weaponized arm modifications.

Your hero, Shelly Bombshell Harrison, has fierce finishing moves and can use the interactive environments make to make her as dynamic as she is deadly. The game is described as a brutal shooting game mixed with classic role-playing mechanics, which both should speak to a lot of people. Those are two of the biggest game genres.

The game is enhanced for use with Nvidia based graphics cards, which is why it comes bundled with those and not the entire EVGA lineup. The game has been enhanced with NVIDIA HBAO+, PhysX and Turbulence Technologies for lifelike physics effects and realistic shadows.

Normally the game will set you back €35.99 on Steam, so it is a nice gift to get along with your new graphics card as well as something to test your new found capabilities thanks to the GTX 900 series graphics cards. EVGA Launches GT 710 Range

The majority of media attention and interest from enthusiasts revolves around higher-end graphics card solutions and observing the horsepower improvements between each generation. As a result, it’s quite easy to overlook cheaper models designed for the casual gaming market or media applications. Today, EVGA unveiled their new range based on NVIDIA’s GT 710 chip. The GPU features a base clock of 924MHz, 64-bit memory interface with a clock of 1800 MHz and total bandwidth reaching 14.4GB/s. Additionally, the GT 710 contains 192 CUDA cores and comes in either a 1GB or 2GB configuration.

While the GT 710 is fairly weak compared to other discrete GPUs, it still manages to outperform integrated graphic chips by a decent margin. Here we can see the 3D gaming performance in 3DMark compared between the Intel HD Graphics on a G3220 CPU, and GT 710. Clearly, it’s not going to run anything demanding at high resolutions, but there is a noticeable boost.

The passive cooled options will be an excellent choice when creating a silent HTPC build. Also, I quite like the overall design, and support for DVI-D, D-Sub and HDMI 1.4a. Sadly, there’s no information regarding pricing and I expect it to be in line with other manufacturers creating custom GT 710 GPUs. I’m intrigued to see how it copes with certain 3D games when the graphical details are kept to a minimum. Whatever the case, it’s an interesting launch and we might consider reviewing one of the cards very soon

SilverStone PTS01 USB 3.0 Enclosure for NUC Review

Introduction


Intel’s NUC series of mini PCs as well as SilverStone’s lineup of Petit series are amazing and bring a lot of great hardware in a very tiny box. They do however have one problem for some people and that is the lack of storage upgradeability. A few of the NUCs have a 2.5-inch bay, but most only feature mSATA, M.2, and similar next generation form factors. That sets some limitations, but limitations are meant to be broken and SilverStone did that with their PTS01 external USB 3.0 storage enclosure that fits the NUC and Petit cases like a glove.

SilverStone designed the PTS01 specifically for the Intel NUC as the majority of the NUC motherboards only support mSATA in order to reduce the dimensions. Where basic and small is great for the one, the other wants a little more. The PTS01 easily stacks with the NUC and Petit series chassis and it can even be placed between the NUCs and their mounting positions such as behind monitors. That way you don’t increase the footprint of your system, at least if you got a little more space behind your monitor.

You can mount a 2.5-inch hard disk or solid state drive with a maximum height of 9mm in the SilverStone PTS01. It is fully SATA III and USB 3.0 compatible with backward compatibility on both sectors. This could truly be the perfect and most convenient way to expand the storage of your NUC system.

The PTS01 is made from aluminum and steel which makes it sturdy and also helps with the cooling of the drive you mount inside. The tiny chassis measures just 122mm by 108mm by 15mm and it weighs just 125-gram thanks to the choice of material.

The SilverStone PTS01 storage enclosure is very simple on its own as it’s just a two-piece enclosure held together by eight screws and containing a small PCB at one end. On the PCB, you can see the USB 3.0 port and the activity LED to the right and we also spot the ASMedia ASM1153E USB 3.0 to Serial SATA bridge chip. The ASM1153E supports UASP for even better transfer speeds and a larger command queue. The enclosure did however not register as UASP device on my Windows 8 Pro system.

EVGA Unveils High-End Z170 Classified-K Motherboard

EVGA rarely disappoints when it comes to high-end gaming products, and its latest gaming motherboard is definitely worthy of praise. The EVGA Z170 Classified-K motherboard was designed with performance in mind, which is why it is based on Intel’s Z170 Express Chipset. This means that it supports DDR4 3600MHz+ memory and offers exceptional overclocking opportunities through its robust GUI BIOS. Another thing worth pointing out is the built-in Killer Ethernet system, which is guaranteed to reduce network latency, especially during intense online gaming sessions. Other highlights include USB 3.1 Support, which is always a welcomed addition.

Considering the fact that more and more manufacturers are releasing products based on Intel’s most performance-orientated chipset, it makes sense for EVGA to step up its game. This new motherboard features an ATX form factor and offers support for up to 2-way SLI and PhysX. EVGA Reveals First Gaming Laptop @ CES 2016

CES 2016: EVGA is one of the largest companies in the hardware industry and has a huge line-up spanned across various departments including graphics cards, PC cases, motherboards and more! During CES 2016, the company announced their first gaming laptop which sports an Intel Core i7 6820HK and supports manual overclocking. This is impressive given the form factor which measures under 1.05 inches with the lid closed. Furthermore, the unit opts for a stylish, aluminium single piece unibody design. On another note, the laptop incorporates a GTX 980M with full overclocking support, and up to 4 hours of battery life. Please note, this is the mobile chipset and not a desktop-grade GTX 980 which many rumours suggested the final model would be.

The laptop’s 4K IPS display features superb viewing angles and vivid colours. Although, I was initially confused by the omission of NVIDIA’s G-Sync refresh technology which produces such a smooth gaming experience. After speaking to EVGA, it seems a higher-end model is in production with a G-Sync display. Another highlight is the keyboard which feels comfortable and extremely well made.

EVGA decided to include 16GB 2666MHz DDR4 memory, up to 256GB M.2 SSD storage, and a 2TB mechanical disk drive. Here we can see the impressive cooling design and native USB 3.1 Type-C connector.

The BIOS can be mouse driven and displays key system diagnostics as well as the ability to tweak almost anything from system boot order to CPU strap. Overall, this is a very impressive package and I’m interested to see what the price point is going to be. When this information is revealed, we will update the article accordingly.

EVGA Reveal Hydro QRG Expandable Cooler @ CES 2016

CES 2016: EVGA may be better known for their PSUs, graphics cards and other hardware, but now they’re expanding into the world of CPU coolers too! This isn’t the first time EVGA has dabbled with cooling through, having had many water cooled GPUs in recent years, so I have high expectations for their new QRG CPU Cooler.

The pump design is certainly unique and comes with a gorgeous LED-lit EVGA logo behind the clear top panel. The hoses are a good length, and come with a thick braiding over the top, and better yet, they come with quick release interlinks, allowing you to easily add a GPU into the mix; such as the Hydro EVGA series!

The cooler is set to launch soon, with just the 120mm version available initially, but expect other models to follow afterwards and if it’s successful, EVGA will be eager to expand on this range even further.

EVGA X10 Mouse & Z10 Keyboard @ CES 2016

CES 2016: Gaming, there’s no doubt about it, a lot of PC gamers love it. PC gaming is even better when you’ve got a great set of peripherals too, and the Z10 from EVGA certainly fits the bill. Equipped with high-end Cherry MX switches, LED backlighting, slider switches for volume and lighting and a bold angular design, it’s certainly a nice keyboard.

However, it’s one extra little feature that sets this keyboard apart, as it can hook up to your graphics cards to allow GPU overclocking directly from the keyboard! If that’s not a great tool for overclocking, I don’t know what is!

The Torq X10 mouse is looking great too, with its aggressive and textured design, LED lighting and fantastic build quality, I can see this being a popular choice for competitive gamers.

There are two huge slipmats on the base, giving it fantastic glide.

And finally, it’s got an adjustable design to help better fit your hand.

EVGA Geforce GTX 980 Ti VR Edition Unveiled @ CES 2016

CES 2016: Sometimes the simplist of changes can make an existing product significantly better, and the latest product from EVGA is a prime example of this. The GTX 980 Ti has already proven to be a great card for virtual reality, making easy work of anything Oculus or Vive can throw at it, to name but a few of the VR headsets on the market. What’s tricky is hooking up the required hardware, often needing a USB and HDMI port, which for some users can mean fetching behind their system and unplugging their monitor cables, no exactly ideal.

The new GTX 980 Ti VR Edition solves this by adding an additonal mini HDMI port to the internal end of the card, allowing you to pass through that cable to a 5.25″ device that sits at the front of your chassis. The new device does the same for two USB 3.0 ports, giving you front panel access to HDMI and an extra USB port, making it perfect for quickly hooking up your VR headset of choice!

The card comes equipped with the ACX 2.0 cooler, although you can expect a reference design too, perfect for those adding custom cooling. No word on price, but expect them to be ready in time for release of Oculus and Vive.

EVGA Showcase High-end AMP & DAC @ CES 2016

CES 2016: EVGA are taking a dive into the world of high-end desktop audio this year, as they demonstrated the prototype of their next-gen audio card! As you can see, we’ve go ta range of high-end gold caps on there, for squeeky clean power delivery, as well as an on-board AMP and DAC. It also looks like the DAC chips are interchangeable, although I’m not sure if that is going to be a remaining feature on the retail product, it would be nice for the enthusiast user to have that option.

The demo units and I can’t stress that enough, those red boxes are just that, demo units for the cards external USB version. They sounded absolutely fantastic, and the clarity and power delivery is up there with the best and you can bet we’ll be pushing this card to the limit as soon as retail samples are available. With a signal to noise ratio of 130Db, Japanese Rubycon caps, Italian made resistors and a little help from Audio Note on the design front, it’s no wonder they’re sounding great.

EVGA Unleash Epic New Chassis Design @ CES 2016

CES 2016: EVGA are no strangers to high-end computer hardware, and their latest chassis is about as high-end and somewhat over the top as they’ve gone to date! The chassis features a unique design where the side panel is intended to be seen as the front panel, with ventilated front and back (or should I say left and right) panels for superior airflow.

There’s a full compliment of dust filters where you would expect them, and plenty of room for fans and radiators.

New EVGA Power Supplies on Show @ CES 2016

CES 2016: EVGA take their power supplies pretty seriously, so it’s no surprise that they rolled them all out to Las Vegas this year to show off in their suite. As you can see, we’ve got the latest 850 GQ, the Supernova 850 T2 and the Supernova 750 T2, perfect companions for any high-end gaming build.

Of course, that’s not all they do as this little mountain of PSUs demonstrates, as this is every PSU model they currently produce, from the low wattage affordable units, right up to their 1000W G2 and beyond. There’s a lot of great units here and there’s little doubt that we’ll see more additions to the range throughout this year. Lucky for our readers, we’re also expecting a shipment of these to test ourselves, and we’re really looking forward to showing you what they can do in the near future.

ADATA HD720 Durable 1TB External Hard Drive Review

Introduction


People with an active lifestyle deserve to carry their storage around with them just as well as clumsy people do, but they should pick their portable storage with care and make sure that it can withstand the treatment it will get. Today I’m taking a closer look at just such a storage drive as I’m having ADATA’s HD720 ultra durable external hard drive with a sporty design on and off the test bench.

The ADATA HD720 is available in three capacity versions, 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB. Today I’m taking a closer look at the 1TB model and will test both its performance on my benchmark system as well as its durability with some clumsy but calculated actions. The HD720 is dustproof, waterproof, and shock resistant for an excellent data protection even when the worst case scenario should happen.

The drive has passed the stringent IP68 test thanks to its durable design. The HD720 even works normally in dusty environments as well as after being submerged in up to 2-meter deep water for up to 2 hours. The HD720 also passed the standard military-grade requirement (MIL-STD-810G 516.6) and even went beyond that and passed the 1.8m drop test.

This is all thanks to the rugged enclosure that the drive is built into. Deep inside the HD720 is a 2.5-inch sized HDD that first of all is cushioned mounted on its own. Next it is covered by a plastic shock structure followed by a special silicon layer that in combination provide the drive with its resilience. The HD720 also features a G-Shock sensor that flashes red when the drive should register a severe shock. When the shock has passed, a solid or flashing blue light displays indicating normal operation has resumed.

A portable drive also needs to be convenient. Thanks to the use of a 2.5-inch HDD you don’t need any extra power supply, the drive can draw enough power directly from the USB connection. The included cable can’t be static attached either or the drive would lose some of its durability. ADATA made a wrap around design on the HD720, allowing you to tug the drive into the groves on the edge of the drive – that at the same time give the drive an even better protection from a side impact.

There are three color choices on the HD720, either blue and black, green and black or completely black. ADATA backs this 211gram light drive with a 3-year warranty.

Lexar Professional Workflow Card Reader and Drive Hub Review

Introduction


There are many ways to get your data from memory cards to your system, server, or other memory cards, but it is far from all of these ways that are equally great. One of the best solutions for this comes from Lexar in the form of their Professional series Workflow card readers, portable SSDs, and storage drive hubs. Lexar provided me with a full set of these readers and a drive hub for reviews and today I’ll be showing you what they can do.

We’ve previously already reviewed the very affordable and compact Workflow DD512 portable USB 3.0 SSD and that is just one of the many options you have in this series. No matter what memory card type you use, you’ll find a reader for it and best of all, you can easily hook them up by simply plugging them into the drive hub.

Let us first talk a little about the drive hub itself, The Lexar Professional Workflow HR1. This is a four-bay drive hub that connects through a single USB 3.0 cable and comes with an external power supply to make sure that you got the optimal performance to all four readers at the same time.

While an external power supply can a little annoying, it is necessary to ensure a proper power supply to all four connected devices. The included AC adapter isn’t large and it won’t be a power hog either with its 20W maximum power consumption.

There is a second model available that also features a Thunderbolt 2 connection that will be particularly useful for Mac OS users on their iOS based systems. Whether you’re a pro photographer or videographer or an adventure seeker using a sports camcorder or aerial camera, it’s easy to create your custom workflow setup.

Kingston SDA3 256GB SDXC UHS-I U3 Memory Card Review

Introduction


SD memory cards are probably the most commonly found among our readers and today I’m testing Kingston’s SDA3 256GB SHXC memory card to see how well it performs. It is already an impressive card just by looking at the capacity, but it also brings a performance to match making it perfect for burst photo shooting as well as 4K UHD video recordings.

Kingston’s SDXC UHS-I U3 Flash card allows you to move to faster performance, do a better job, and do it faster. The card is rated for speeds up to 90MB/s while reading and 80MB/s while writing. That is a UHS-I Class 3 performance and it is 9x faster than a standard Class 10 SD card that quite a few people still use these days. It meets the SD Association’s latest specification release, UHS-I U3 (Ultra High-Speed Bus, Speed Class 3), which guarantees a performance of at least 30MB/s and enough bandwidth to record and playback 4K2K video without interruption. EVGA Announces 700B Value Power Supply

You should always make sure that the power supply in your system is of decent quality, after all, it is the heart of your system that supplies every single part with power. That is a thing that can get tricky when you are building a system on a budget, but still need a large amount of power. EVGA has a power supply for just this scenario with their 700B 700W PSU where performance meets value as they call it.

The 700B name is made up of two things, the 700 watts of power it can deliver continuously and the B comes from its 80 Plus Bronze certification that guarantees over 85% efficiency under typical loads. The power supply is built around a single +12V line supporting 56A. The one thing that might put a dampener on this PSU for some people is the fact that it is completely non-modular which makes it harder to create a proper cable management.

EVGA naturally built in a full set of heavy-duty protections to ensure that nothing gets damaged in unusual situations. EVGA Releases AIO-Cooled GeForce GTX 970 HYBRID GAMING

Cooler is better and that isn’t a motto that’s just relevant to the top of the line graphics cards, it’s something that applies to all models throughout the ranks. Those who are in the market for a new GeForce GTX 970 powered graphics card and at the same time want something that runs as cool as possible, they should take a look at the just released EVGA GeForce GTX 970 HYBRID GAMING graphics card. The new graphics card comes with an all-in-one liquid cooler as well as a blower fan for optimal cooling and without the hassle of installing an aftermarket cooler yourself.

Without the trouble of mounting aftermarket solutions, tubing and filling, the EVGA GeForce GTX 970 HYBRID GAMING is pure plug and play like any other graphics card. The only difference is that you’ll also need to mount the 120mm radiator with the fan to the chassis.

Black Friday is finally upon us and retailers have started to slash prices on a number of items just before the holiday period. SCAN is the latest company to offer heavy discounts on computer hardware, and it’s certainly one of the best sales I’ve seen in recent memory! Another bargain is the HyperX Cloud Gaming Headset for £39.99 which features exceptional audio and rivals products twice the price.

If you’re looking for a high-end GPU, I doubt any deal is going to come close to this. On another note, the Corsair H110i GT is another unbelievable deal and on sale for £69.98. The closed-loop-cooler comes with a 5 year warranty, luxurious tubing finish and superb temperatures. It’s one of my favourite products from Corsair in the past few years and a wonderful hassle-free choice for overclocking purposes. It also looks incredible and features an RGB LED block.

EVGA Launches Value Oriented 80Plus Gold GQ PSUs

With many hardware components turning their focus on power efficiency, one area that has lagged behind is PSUs. While the 80Plus programme has helped reign in power conversion loss, most affordable and budget PSUs are still in the lower tiers like Bronze. Today, EVGA has launched a new Gold rated series of PSUs aimed for those on a lower budget. Called the GQ Series, the new PSUs should allow budget users to hit higher efficiency levels.

In order to hit the lower price point, EVGA cut back on some features their old Gold PSUs have. Unlike their competitors, EVGA previously only had fully modular Gold PSUs but the GQ will rectify this with semi-modularity, shaving a bit off the price. The warranty is also cut down to 5 years which is still decent but lower than higher tier PSUs. Other features remain in place with ECO mode silent operation up to 30% load and manufactured by FSP with Japanese capacitors.

Overall, the new EVGA GQ should bring more affordability and choice to builders. While pricing is still a bit high, the cheaper construction should allow EVGA to compete better with other semi-modular Gold PSUs. With more competition, prices will hopefully drop for Gold PSUs overall.
