Automotive Companies Choose Microsoft At CES

The Automotive industry is an avenue with which tech companies are always striving to exploit, from self-driving cars, clever Sat Nav that manages to avoid rivers to the self-aware AI system that has become ubiquitous for many branded vehicles. Now, four further automotive companies have announced partnerships with Microsoft with the aim of enhancing their computing power.

The four companies who have confirmed a working relationship at CES in Las Vegas (Where the gang at eTeknix insert plug here) are Volvo, Nissan, Harman and engineering partner IAV. These companies join a growing list for Microsoft which also include Toyota, Ford, Qoros (Chinese automotive manufacturing company) and Delphi (UK manufacturing company)

Microsoft envisage that every car will be connected to the Internet and strangely to other cars and will also be a “Companion within your digital life”. The following is a quick summary of how Volvo, Nissan, Harman and IAV plan to integrate Microsoft tech into their cars.

  • Volvo – plan to interrogate Microsoft Band 2 with a Windows 10 smartphone and also the Volvo Call Universal App. This means that consumers can interact with the Microsoft Band by holding down the “action button” and requesting a function
  • Harman – Plan to offer drivers the ability to access the Office 365 productivity suite within the Harman infotainment systems. This means that drivers will be able to interact with Office 365 via an intelligent personal assistant software to schedule meetings etc.
  • IAV – Plan to use Windows 10 Continuum to stream Windows 10 via a mobile device directly to a car’s dashboard, giving drivers access to Windows 10 features and apps such as Cortana, Skype for Business, Calendar, Outlook and Groove Music.
  • Nissan – Plan to incorporate Connect Telematics Systems (CTS) which will be powered by Microsoft Azure. This will be incorporated into the LEAF and Infiniti models.

Tech will always be pushed into the automotive industry with the aim of offering consumers a different experience, companies will need to make sure any software is secure and, therefore, cannot be remotely hacked. Drivers will also need to be mindful and not be distracted by the many tech options, imagine attempting to schedule a meeting while travelling at 60 miles an hour down a motorway.

AMD Reports 2015 Third Quarter Results

We recently brought you some amazing news regarding Fujitsu buying 85% of AMD’s shares. This not only means that AMD has money again, but the company’s shares are now less fragmented; is it too little too late as AMD reports 2015 Third Quarter financial Results?

The future still looks bleak as AMD has reported a quarterly loss of $197 million. It’s no secret on how many significant changes AMD has made to the organisation in efforts to reduce costs and increase profits. Despite these changes, that’s an increase loss from last quarter’s $181 million. Whilst AMD is continuing to lose market share to Intel and Nvidia, when you look closer and start to reflect on AMD’s shares over the last five years, it really starts to tell the story of AMD’s ongoing struggles:

Maybe we shouldn’t write AMD off yet because alongside Fujitsu’s major investment the Embedded, and Semi-Custom part of the organisation has increased 13% over last quarter. Operating income for this segment came in at $84 million, up from $27 million in Q2

AMD is doing more corporate restructuring in an attempt to reduce expenses further. Perhaps the most troubling aspect of the results is whilst they are attempting to provide the best value for money their gross margin is only 23%, something has to give eventually.

What’s your thoughts on this subject? Will Fujitsu’s major investment provide AMD with the much-needed injection to fix things, or is it money down the creek? Let us know in the comments below.

eTeknix Closes Its Doors Once and For All

You don’t often see me writing articles any more, because I, throughout the years hired a good, strong team to do the bulk of the content, while I could focus on other areas including the maintenance side of things and web development.

It’s been 5 strong years from when we started back in February 2005 as a one man band and moved on to bigger and better things as time went on, and while we had our ups and downs, it has been a great ride throughout, but sadly all good things must come to an end.

With Intel supposedly dropping out of the DIY market, we had to re-evaluate our situation on what we did, and with our content team and myself having extensive knowledge of hardware, we can’t honestly see a place for a site like eTeknix within the world any more.

I wanted to keep this short and sweet, as it really pains me to say that we are closing the site effective from Tuesday 2nd April and want to say a few key messages to a lot of people.

To the manufacturers and sponsors who have helped us along the way; thank you for your support as without you sending us products, we wouldn’t have been able to supply our readers with the most up-to-date content around.

To anyone who has helped me along the way, I and the team are forever in your debt.

Lastly to our loyal readers and devoted fans, without you, none of this would have been possible. You really were the reason we kept going for so long, and in a way we now feel as though we’ve let you down by liquidating eTeknix and moving on to other things.

To say I’m not choked up writing this would be a lie. I’ve put countless hours of blood, sweat and tears into eTeknix and it pains me to be in this situation, but I hope I may still get to talk to many of you by one means or another.

It’s almost 1am on April 1st now, and it’s been a tiring day trying to sort this all out, so for now, I’d like to say thank you for supporting us throughout all of these years, and I wish you all the very best for the future.

eTeknix @ Insomnia i48 Opening Ceremony

Here we are at the end of the first day of Insomnia i48 here in sunny Telford, OK I tell a lie, its actually buried under 10 inches of snow, but spirits are high and the glorious winter weather has made for an exciting start to the Spring season here at Insomnia.

Of course iSeries features many events, gaming tournaments and things to keep you all entertained, but the most popular of all has to be the opening ceremony which sees hundred of gamers, fans and general loot loving fiends gather on the main stage for a series of fun and games, challenges and most of all just to see how much free stuff they can catch.

Taking to the stage we saw all the big exhibitors from the event such as Mad Catz, In Win, Overclockers UK and many more, all of which we will be taking a closer look at throughout the weekend, throwing literally thousands of pounds work of swag into the crowd. Prizes ranged from pens right up to top end graphics cards and CPUs.

The eTeknix team didn’t want to disappoint the crowd either and we took to the stage to throw out a sizable box of loot of our own, containing various prizes from our sponsors such as Enermax and XFX.

The crowd waited patiently for the event to begin but it truly was the calm before the storm.

Multiplay / Insomnia legends Wizzo and A_Spec took to the stage as the main hosts of the stage event, bringing the usual announcements for the weekends events as well as introducing the various exhibitors as we came on stage, not to mention far too many snow related puns that garnered more than a few sighs from the crowd, fun time had by all.

Within five minutes of the event beginning people where out of there seats, arms out, screaming and shouting like raging zombies, hungry for loot and freebies that were being hurled into the air, think mosh pit for lanyards.

45 minutes into the main stage event, eTeknix took to the stage where we grabbed this fantastic picture of many of the eTeknix fans and general attendees of the Multiplay event were eager to hear what we had to say… only kidding, they just wanted the free yo-yo’s that we were giving away.

Want to see the eTeknix team in action on the stage? Skip to 47min 30sec on the video below, of course we also encourage you to watch the full video to enjoy some of the great fun and games that go on with the opening ceremony.

Check back later today where we will be providing you full coverage of not only the eTeknix booth, but also many of the other events from around the show.

CES 2013 – The eTeknix team travel to Las Vegas

With the start of the new year comes one of the biggest events in the tech calendar, CES International. The event takes over a colossal amount of the Las Vegas strip and its surrounding areas as the who’s who of the tech industry, manufacturers, suppliers and more aim to show their worth to the rest of the industry and the related media.

eTeknix isn’t new to the CES scene and Andy and Chris were here last year, but given the overwhelming scale of the event they’ve been kind enough to invite me along for the ride with them in the hope we can bring you even more coverage of the show.

Just like any great story, this one starts out with an epic journey. After I had completed the 10 hour coach journey from Leeds to Kent, I was able to meet up with the rest of the eTeknix team, Andy the site owner, Chris our storage, memory and motherboard (to name but a few) reviewer.

Also in attendance was Ryan our superb cooling editor who came to pay us a visit before we headed out to Gatwick airport.

A little last minute work and tinkering before we loaded up our bags, far too busy to tidy up of course.

Loaded up and ready to go through security at the airport, the fear of a super long flight begins to set in.

Thankfully a hearty breakfast helped alleviate some of the stress of the flight.

30,000ft above the Atlantic as we spend 11 hours making “are we there yet” jokes.

At least at times, the view was simply incredible, but where are all the technology pictures I hear you ask? well CES International is a big show and boy do we have some great coverage lined up for you soon.

Stay tuned to the site, our Facebook page, Twitter or YouTube as we’ve already got hundreds of images, stories and even a few up close videos to give you a taste of the tech on display this year.

CES 2013, Las Vegas Preview

So another year has flown by in the tech world and we’re round to that time of year again where the industry comes in to Las Vegas for one of the biggest technology shows of the year; The Consumer Electronics Show. Spearding itself over a large area of Las Vegas and with a large number of manufacturers having private suites in various hotels up and down the strip, there is virtually no end to the kinds of technology that can be seen and a whole host of unveiling that are set to take place; some of which have been announced and some which may be left as a surprise.

For the second year running myself and Andy are heading out to the show and this time we are also joined by Peter who also does reviews on the site. By having a slightly larger team, we aim to get you more content from the show and hopefully we will be able to get a few new names to work with in the future, which could mean more reviews in the pipeline.

So what is the talk of the show this year? Well, outside of computers and the associated hardware that we normally focus on, one of the bigger things that we will be seeing relates to 4K televisions. We’ve seen and heard a lot about them just recently and we are hearing that a number of manufacturers are going to be showing off the new technology in all its super high definition glory.

As part of our pre-opening endeavour to spot some upcoming tech, its clear to say that a large number of manufacturers are not shy to let us get a small glimpse of what they have to offer. We did find that one or two however are holding their card close to their chest and Samsung had their stand covered from virtually every angle so this would lead us to believe that they must have something special to unveil this week.

Hisense (situated opposite Intel in the main convention centre) had a number 4K screens on their stand all fired up and showing some full resolution content. First impressions and all I can say for now is wow! – with screens on display that go all the way up to a staggering 110″ across, our first impressions are very good with the clarity of the image along with vibrant and deep colours, contrast and supreme detail. To give a reference as to the pure size of this screen, I stood by it just for scale (I’m just over 6ft tall).

Moving a little further in to the halls, Sony’s presence this year is massive with a stand that has a complete wrap around display suspended from the ceiling comprising of 19 projectors working seemlessly together to give a single continuous image. Their stand is broken up into many sections with areas dedicated to cameras, headphones, home audio, notebooks and largely to no surprise  monitors.

A number of side by side comparisons are on offer showing 4K working its magic in many different ways, such as displaying ultra hig resolution images that can be looked at clear as day. The two monitors below are showing the exact same image, the left in 4K and the right in standard 1920*1080. At a distance you can make out what the text to the right is meant to say, but the left hand side however is totally different with a totally transparent difference to be seen.

Moving away from the monitors, there is a whole variety of other things on display varying from cameras and home cinema systems, Intel with their ultra books by the masses, Bluetooth enabled watches that connect to your phone, Ford with new in car technologies including WiFi in the new 2013 Focus and in car audio to name but a few categories.

Outside of the convention centre and the exhibition halls in the Venetian hotel, a large number of exhibitors (especially those of whom we relate to directly) have their own private suites in hotels up and down the Las Vegas Strip. Here they have many products to show off and with a large number of meetings lined up and potentially a number of video interviews as well. All in all there is a lot to be seen, but what we will aim to get is what we feel to be the best pickings from the show for the computer and mobile markets.

Finally, as I round this off, on behalf of the eTeknix team, I would like to give our thanks to Gigabyte and Sapphire, who without their sponsorship, this trip would not have been possible. Stay tuned here on eTeknix.com, our Facebook page , our Twitter feed and finally our YouTube channel, where you can keep up to date with the latest content direct from CES 2013.
