Science Textbooks to Contain Illustrations by XKCD’s Randall Munroe

The popular webcomic XKCD has shown for years how well science, technology and humour can be mashed together through the medium of stick figures. Fans of the webcomic created by former NASA roboticist, Randall Munroe will be glad to find that his skills are going to be put towards more than just entertainment, with his artwork to feature in a number of textbooks in America published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH).

Munroe’s art will be taken from one of his books titled Thing Explainer, which contains simply drawn and annotated blueprints for objects varying from rockets to bombs and even household objects like pens. This art will feature in three of HMH’s 2017 textbooks, HMH Chemistry, HMH Biology, and HMH Physics and are known to include The Pieces Everything is Made of (aka The Periodic Table), Bags of Stuff Inside You (The Human Torso), and Heavy Metal Power Buildings (Nuclear Reactors).

It won’t all be reused assets either, as HMH have commissioned Munroe to provide a number of exclusive new illustrations and digital animations of some of the pieces featured in Thing Explainer. These new works will be part of a new series of science materials from HMH that will be utilized during the 2017-18 educational year.

“Randall’s wit, originality, and deep scientific knowledge elevate our curriculum and is a great way to engage students,” said Peggy Smith-Herbst, Senior Vice President, HMH Studios. “His sense of humor and ability to make science fun will encourage a love of scientific inquiry and creativity, both within and beyond the classroom, and we are proud to be bringing his engaging insight exclusively to our customers.”

Hopefully, Munroe may just be able to take the typical droll science textbook and make it into an interesting and entertaining piece that can help a new generation of students get interested in science. Now all I have to ask is where was this when I was growing up?

The various campaigns from hopeful candidates aiming to be the next president of the United States feels as if it has been going on forever, from Donald trump and his controversial views to Hillary Clinton and her private email scandal, it really feels like Groundhog day. Hoping to harness the political interest is a games developer by the name of “Stardock Entertainment” who has both developed and also released a game by the name of “The Political Machine”.

Super Bowl 50 Sets a New CBS Streaming Record

The Super Bowl is one of the most popular sporting events worldwide and continues to attract very large audiences. This year’s event was hosted at Levi’s Stadium in the San Francisco Bay Area, and contested between the Carolina Panthers and Denver Broncos. According to broadcaster CBS, the average cost of a 30-second commercial during the game was a staggering $5 million. Unlike the majority of NFL games, the Super Bowl manages to create interest from new viewers outside of the US who aren’t overly versed with the rules. Perhaps, they want to see the half time show, adverts or simply intrigued by the spectacle. As a Brit, I don’t really follow American football, but the Super Bowl is always an interesting watch!

In terms of media coverage, the Super Bowl 50 was a resounding success and managed to attract a “record audience” streaming the game. Unfortunately, there’s no specific numbers from CBS to judge how many people tuned in, but it’s clearly broke last year’s figure of 800,000 viewers per minute. Even if you really dislike American football, this is an extremely impressive and exemplifies the importance of digital media. Part of this success is down to CBS encouraging streaming through various devices including the Apple TV, Roku Stick and Xbox One. It’s not unreasonable to think that streaming could take over from traditional TV broadcasts in the next 10-15 years. Technical problems during the stream might deter people from using it in the future, but organisers are becoming more aware of how to build the correct infrastructure for more viewers.

In an ideal world, I’d love to know the exact figures, because the Super Bowl provides an extreme example of consumers adopting streaming on a mass scale. Still, TV will reign supreme for some time, but people are now more open to streaming content online.

51 Percent of US Internet Users Watch Netflix

Streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, Hulu and others have revolutionized the way we watch video content. In the digital age, there’s no need to wait for your favourite TV shows, or watch a bunch of adverts, as streaming services offer instant gratification. Netflix is evidently the most popular choice due to the superb TV and film library. However, many customers outside the US have to use a VPN as content is restricted on a geographical basis. Nevertheless, the affordable pricing and huge range of shows in the USA is proving a popular combination and according to research firm RBC Capital Markets, 51 percent of US internet users watched content on Netflix during the last 12 months.

Netflix’s viewing figures as a percentage even surpassed YouTube which finished in second place. The data is intriguing and illustrates the popularity of streaming services. As a result, it’s perfectly feasible for traditional TV to struggle in the next decade as consumers expect more and become sick of TV scheduling. Furthermore, Netflix now offers a premium service capable of 4K streaming, which is bound to please customers with a brand new 4K television. Although, the company has gradually increased the subscription costs over time. Therefore, it’s unknown how expensive Netflix might be in the next few years.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 Declared Biggest Entertainment Launch of 2015

Despite churning out sequel after sequel, the Call of Duty franchise continues to be extraordinary popular and a commercial success. By now, you might have expected the game’s earnings to have curtailed off, and continued on a downward slope. However, Black Ops 3 grossed over $550 million in a mere three days. To put this into perspective, Call of Duty Black Ops 3 is the biggest entertainment launch of 2015 and even surpassed major film releases. Activision relayed the news in a Twitter post which reads:

https://twitter.com/BlackOps3News_/status/664434930001154050/photo/1

This illustrates the surprising longevity of Activision’s first-person-shooter and ability to retain its loyal audience. On another note, video games are becoming so successful, and a genuine threat to the movie industry. Sadly, the game suffers from a number of performance issues on PC which revolves around strange RAM and VRAM utilization. Nowadays, Call of Duty’s main player base is on console and many people simply purchase a system to play COD and Fifa.

I’m interested to see how long the series can remain profitable and when the bubble will finally burst. Call of Duty almost seems like a dirty secret, as people often deride it in public, but the sales tell a different story.

Are you a fan of Call of Duty?

Blizzard and Razer Reveal Official Overwatch Gaming Gear

Blizzards new 6v6 first-person shooter looks set to take the competitive gaming world by storm, which means there will be demand for some equally action packed peripherals. The new range of Razer hardware comes fully equipped with the Razer Chroma RGB lighting engine, adding the ever popular BlackWidow keyboard, DeadAdder gaming mouse and the Goliathus Extended Mouse Mat, all kitted out with a kick-ass Overwatch theme.

“Overwatch is one of the most sought-after titles out there and it’s a blast to play,” says Min-Liang Tan, Razer co-founder and CEO. “We’re excited to bring Blizzard players, our own fans, and PC gamers everywhere the preferred FPS peripherals of eSports athletes from world-leading teams. Nickelodeon is Reviving Classic Cartoons on a Dedicated Channel

Nickelodeon is launching a new TV channel called “The Splat” to broadcast classic 90s cartoons including Rugrats, CatDog, The Wild Thornberries, Ren and Stimpy, Hey Arnold! and Rocko’s Modern Life. The news was announced via a YouTube video and there has already been teasers across social media. More specifically, the channel is promoting “#TheSplatIsComing” on Twitter and trying to get people to discuss their favourite Nickelodeon cartoons.

According to an inside source, the channel will feature a host of iconic 90s cartoons but there won’t be any new episodes filmed. Apparently, The Splat is set for an October release. I would love to divulge more information but the studio is being quite coy about its future plans. Personally, I remember coming home from school and sitting down to watch Rugrats. Seeing the extremely timid, Chuckie trying to cope with the evil Angelica was always a great watch.

Many of the 90s cartoons contained fantastic characters and engrossing stories. I’m not ashamed to say that at 27 years old, I would go back and watch some of my childhood cartoons. The channel is bound to be a nostalgia trip and I cannot wait to see the final schedule.

What is your favourite Nickelodeon cartoon?

Amazon Cancels Trade-In Programme

Amazon has officially canned their trade-in scheme for physical entertainment goods and ends on August 31st 2015. This isn’t a surprising move considering the poor trade-in prices compared to CEX and cash value on eBay. Also, physical media is being phased out for digital content and takes up storage space for items with a larger profit margin. Nowadays, there are so many digital platforms available including Netflix, Spotify, Steam, Amazon Instant Video, iTunes and more!

Of course, there are collectors out there and people who prefer physical media, but they rarely trade-in products towards another item. As a result, it makes business sense to drop this policy and improve Amazon’s digital streaming services. You only have to look at the PC Gaming market to see how quickly digital has revolutionized purchasing habits. Only a few stores stock retail PC games and I presume they are quite a niche outlet. Generally, other media such as film, and books will eventually catch up and be predominately digital.

The only reason to trade anything in is convenience and not wanting to bother with eBay selling. Stores offer pitiful amounts because they know consumers will accept low prices to avoid the hassle of eBay. I do wonder what will happen to retail stores and the second-hand market in an increasingly digital future.

When was the last time you traded in a product, and what was it?

All Six Star Wars Movies at the Same Time is Nauseating!

It’s that time of the week where most people sit back in their chairs, look at the ceiling or out of a window and contemplate what to do with the two days of glorious freedom. If you live in the UK, you will know that every Sunday afternoon is a key staple of movie goodness, Back to the Future, Indiana Jones, or any other 3+ movie series that will take up around 2 hours of scheduling.

However, having to wait until the next weekend for the next installment can create unwanted tension in the home. Thankfully, an evil genius has combatted this situation by offering us the complete Star Wars saga in a single 2 hours and 22 minutes sit down.

Word of warning, turn your speakers down and hold on tight to reality.

That was, interesting to say the least. Was it enough to get you more hyped up ready for the upcoming “The Force Awakens” film? Was that the first time you watched The Phantom Menace? Did you enjoy that, let us know in the comments what other overlay film series you would like to watch.

4.9 Million New Netflix Members in the First Quarter

Netflix just reported its first quarter financial performance and shareholders sure have to be happy with the news that sent shares up more than 10%. The company reported that there were 2.3 million new domestic subscribers and 2.6 million non-domestic subscribers.

The company beat market expectations of $0.69 adjusted earnings per share on a revenue of $1.57 billion by having an adjusted earnings per share of $0.77, with GAAP profit per share of $0.38 on a revenue of $1.57 billion.

With streaming media becoming so prevalent, the huge gain in members is no surprise with more people finding the joys of on-demand entertainment. The fact that Netflix is producing some amazing high-quality original programming is probably responsible for some of the new subscribers, but really it is just icing on the cake. In case you forgot that Netflix still has a DVD and Blu-ray by mail option it is interesting to see that it only accounted for $85 million during the same time, showing the sheer dominance of streaming media. Netflix had negative cash flow in the same period due to its “growing original content investment” though they still have $3 billion in cash and equivalents. Worth noting is that the revenue is weaker thanks to the increasing power of the US dollar, reducing international revenue by $48 million using 2014 exchange rates.

Jeremy Clarkson Has Just Been Fired

UPDATE 14:08 GMT: Clarkson has been fired, read below to find out more!

So after much deliberation, Jeremy Clarkson has now been fired, or so it first seems. This comes to light as Sky News reporter Mark White tweeted the following:

No official word as of yet, as Clarkson has tweeted showing that the above is in fact false.

You can see the tweet here:

So the question is, has he or hasn’t he? The BBC have said that no final decision has been made. If this does turn out to be true, there is still no word on what will happen to the future of the show, or the live show or in fact whether James May or Richard Hammond will carry on without their co-host and close friend.

UPDATE: A Telegraph online poll asking if viewers would still watch Top Gear without the famous trio of presenters finds 90% saying “No”

UPDATE 14:08 GMT: Jeremy Clarkson has officially been fired. Director General Tony Hall has confirmed with the following statement:

It is with great regret that I have told Jeremy Clarkson today that the BBC will not be renewing his contract. It is not a decision I have taken lightly. I have done so only after a very careful consideration of the facts and after personally meeting both Jeremy and Oisin Tymon.

I am grateful to Ken MacQuarrie for the thorough way he has conducted an investigation of the incident on 4th March. Given the obvious and very genuine public interest in this I am publishing the findings of his report. I take no pleasure in doing so. I am only making them public so people can better understand the background. I know how popular the programme is and I also know that this decision will divide opinion. The main facts are not disputed by those involved.

We will update as we find out more!

Better Visuals and Modding Tools Promised in Latest Wasteland 2 Engine Update

Unity’s latest release, Unity 5, is nearly here and since more and more games are being developed with its Game Engine, a lot of developers will receive new and improved tools to tweak their games. The release promises more flexibility and power, as well as a more simplified process of developing games for a variety of platforms.

inXile Entertainment is one of the companies which are already keen on using Unity 5’s power and is currently planning on ways to upgrade its Wasteland 2 title. Chris Keenan, the project lead for Wasteland 2, posted what to expect in the near future from the title, having significant “visual improvements” and “better tools for modders” as a result of the new changes.

“…one task we’re working on right now is migrating the Wasteland 2 codebase from the Unity 4.5 engine to Unity 5, which will enable some new possibilities for us. A major benefit of moving to Unity 5 is that 5 will include many of the tools from Unity 4.x Pro. We relied on many of these tools during our development (like creating and building navigation meshes), and they will be available to modders without having to pay thousands of dollars for a Pro Unity license … Unity 5 offers physically based shading, which is already starting to look amazing in the scenes we’ve touched up.”

inXile stated that it has a few unique features planned as well, but it isn’t ready to reveal them. However, since modding and better visuals are the main topic, it’s hard to imagine the ‘unmentioned’ features being a disappointment.

14-Day Return Policy Launches for EU iTunes Customers

In line with new European Union regulation, Apple has launched a 14-day return policy for iTunes digital purchases. The new policy affects all downloads from Apple’s iTunes music and movies stores, the App Store, iBooks Store and for any other download purchase made with Apple.

Right of cancellation: If you choose to cancel your order, you may do so within 14 days from when you received your receipt without giving any reason, except iTunes Gifts which cannot be refunded once you have redeemed the code.
…

To meet the cancellation deadline, you must send your communication of cancellation before the 14-day period has expired.

Effects of cancellation: We will reimburse you no later than 14 days from the day on which we receive your cancellation notice. We will use the same means of payment as you used for the transaction, and you will not incur any fees for such reimbursement.

Exception to the right of cancellation: You cannot cancel your order for the supply of digital content if the delivery has started upon your request and acknowledgement that you thereby lose your cancellation right. – Excerpt from updated iTunes terms and conditions in the EU.

In the US and elsewhere, the terms still state “All sales Final”, while this has always been offered with a degree of flexibility (something I know from personal experience).

Guiness World Record For 8000 Nintendo Games

33-year-old Ahmed bin Fahad from the United Arab Emirates has been given a Guiness World Record for the “largest collection of Nintendo Entertainment System paraphernalia”.

Even though his record only fits his NES collection, he claims to have over 8000 games, covering Nintendo’s ancient arcade cabinets, the Famicom, NES, SNES, N64, GameCube, Wii and Wii U. He also has a giant collection of Game Boy and Nintendo DS games.

Fahad, who is a police officer by day, estimates to have spent over £260,000 on his collection.

“It is a very expensive hobby, but I wanted to set this record to give a message to the world that Arabs are not only interested in speeding cars and flashy things”.

I guess this puts my paltry N64 collection to shame.

Silent Hills – the Horror Game We’ve Been Waiting For

I’m sure by now you’ve all heard of P.T, short for Playable Teaser, for the PlayStation 4, if you haven’t then where have you been!? P.T appears as a demo on the PlayStation Store and is free to download, it’s 1.9Gb big and you get around 30 mins worth of playtime, more if you’re a huge wuss when it comes to horror games like I am. All I’m saying is that I tried it at 2am a few days ago an I turned it off in about 5 minutes, 10/10 huge wimp. Anyway, the demo itself looks amazing, the developers are clearly going for a hyper-realistic look with the game for more immersion and just a better quality game. The lighting in the demo is spectacular, swinging lights and dark corners really give it that horror feel that gamers love.

Now when P.T first appeared nobody knew what on earth it was, until they finished it that is. (Sorry for spoilers here) Upon finishing the demo you are rewarded with a cutscene featuring Norman Reedus, yes it is that guy from The Walking Dead, who better to place in a creepy/hostile environment then one of the most badass characters on television right now.

I for one cannot wait for the full title to launch and to be sucked into the horrific world of Silent hill, although I’ll most likely turn it off within 10 minutes. *sigh*

3D Blu-Ray Support Finally Coming To The Xbox One In August

Good news is on the horizon for Xbox One users this August. All Xbox One systems will be getting an update that will allow them to playback high-definition content through 3D Blu-ray discs, putting the console one step ahead of the rival Playstation 4 in the never-ending war between Microsoft and Sony.

In addition to the new support for 3D movies, the update which will be available to download towards the end of August will also include a couple of other nifty features, which Microsoft hope will make the entertainment experience better still. These extras include a low battery notification on-screen for your controller to work alongside the existing visual warning on the controller, more possibilities for interaction with your friends from the home page and more importantly the ability to purchase games and DLC from your phone – no matter where you are.

Although there is the ability to purchase games, apps and DLC through the Xbox Live website, in the same way you can with the Xbox 360, the move to the mobile platform fits in with our connected lifestyles and like many of the other update features, it aims to put more selling points on the Xbox One’s already large list versus the Playstation 4.

Microsoft Pulls The Plug On Xbox Entertainment Studios

It seems that Microsoft has not finished cutting their employee count following an announcement that they are pulling the plug on Xbox Entertainment Studios with immediate effect – around 200 more employees could be losing their jobs.

It is not entirely known at this moment in time if this group of employees are going to be searching for new jobs in the next few months or if Microsoft are going to reallocate them elsewhere within the company, but the axing of the entertainment studios wing will obviously mean that the original TV content for Xbox Live will be coming to an end.

Microsoft has said however that they will be seeing their current TV series through to the end rather than just cutting them off half way through, but for fans of Halo: Nightfall and Signal to Noise will have to say goodbye to the series sooner than expected.

Following the announcement that XES was closing, Phil Spencer, the head of the studios issued a memo to clarify any confusion surrounding the closure:

Xbox will continue to support and deliver interactive sports content like ‘NFL on Xbox,’ and we will continue to enhance our entertainment offering on console by innovating the TV experience through the monthly console updates. Additionally, our app partnerships with world-class content providers bringing entertainment, sports and TV content to Xbox customers around the world are not impacted by this organizational change in any way and remain an important component of our Xbox strategy.

Although the studios are obviously not a huge part of Microsoft’s portfolio, they are key to Xbox and it is not entirely known just yet why the division is getting the cut. Cost cutting is one theory whilst pulling resources to other areas to improve their development is another. I guess we will find out soon enough.

Pinball FX2 Arrival On Xbox One Upsets Xbox 360 Owners

Following its update to run on the Playstation 4 platform, Zen Studios – the designers behind Pinball FX2 have announced the arrival date for the Xbox One, although they have upset a number of players who use an Xbox 360.

Unlike the Playstation platform, Xbox One owners will not be able to import ANY of the tables that they have purchased and downloaded for their 360 consoles. In a response to the disappointing news, Zen Studios have made a statement saying that the lack of an option to import DLC content was not an option that was made available to them and we presume this is down to the way the two systems work. On the other hand though, Playstation users are able to port their content from one generation to another with DLC working on both the PS3 and 4 as well as the Vita.

In a statement about the lack of cross-platform compatibility, community manager ‘BarbieBobomb’ said:

“We know this is very important to fans of the Xbox 360 version, but we are very sorry to say that this was not an option made available to us on Xbox One. We always do our best to take advantage of any platform’s features whenever possible, and if a feature like cross-platform entitlement is an option for us, we will make it an option for our players. Unfortunately in this case, it was not.”

Whilst the lack of DLC will upset a number of users, hopefully the stunning graphics will make up the dismay with 60fps, 1080p gaming on offer as well as updated achievement goals and the option to play in tournaments across the globe. Lastly the game is going to be free to download, but whatever way you look at it all, the lack of a DLC import option is likely to turn a few heads away.

Timberman Becomes The Latest Alternative To Flappy Bird

We all know how popular Flappy Bird was when it hit the App store and Google Play earlier in the year and since its creator pulled it from both stores, users have been begging for its return so that they can fulfil their flappy cravings. The wait for an alternative is not over as a new game known as Timberman has chopped its way to the top of the download charts.

As simple as Flappy Bird was, Timberman is a simple, yet addictive game where you have to chop down trees whilst avoiding branches by tapping on either side of the tree to get as many blocks of wood out as you can; as seen below.

As popular and frustrating as this drop dead simple game is, it has actually been rocking around on the App Store for a good couple of months now, but like many games that sit at the top of the charts, it sometimes takes a bit of time before a game gets recognised and goes viral. In the case of Timberman, this surge in downloads came to be after the games was featured as an Editors Choice by Apple. Not surprisingly, the acknowledgement has sent the downloads rocketing and out of the 2.5 million downloads that have been made, nearly half of these have been done over the last three days.

Addictive or not I’m not one for mobile game downloads, but I’m sure that a number of you readers will be wanting to join the craze, so here’s the links for the App Store and Google Play. Fancy more? a golden version is also available to download for 69p /99 cents.

No More Tangled Headphones as Physicist Unravels His ‘String Theory’

There are a number of things in life that are simply frustrating – traffic jams, paperwork and queues are just some, but high up on the frustration list for many is that simple act of tangled headphones. No matter how hard you tr, carefully wrapping up your headphones before placing them in your bag or pocket, somehow they manage to unwrap themselves and play a game of twister when out of sight so that when you next get them out, you have to spend five minutes trying to intricately undo the mass of knots that have miraculously appeared.

‘Tangle-free’ headphones have been around for a little while now and to be honest I think they’re just marketing junk as those cables still feel the need to wrap themselves around each other, leading you to the point at which you want to scream. This age-old problem however is no more as Robert Matthews, a physicist at the Aston University in Birmingham has unravelled this mystery and come up with a drop dead simple solution that appears to put an end to tangled headphones. Yes, that’s right, science and universities have come to the rescue once again for a solution to a trivial conundrum.

The solution comes with two simple steps. The first of these is to ensure the two ear buds are clipped together (this is where that random bit of rubber around your headphones comes into play) after which you clip the buds and the jack together as seen above, with the intention that holding them together stops the cable from threading through itself and creating the knots.

Matthews says

‘The study explains why your headphone cable mysteriously turns into one big jumbled mess while it’s in your bag or pocket. We’ve also struck upon an easy solution – simply clipping together the two ends of the cords makes the cable less likely to form a knot – saving the frustration of having to untangle it before plugging in. This was all about using hard science to tackle an everyday issue.

It was great to see how enthusiastic school students were to get to grips with the surprisingly complex science behind the phenomenon, and carry out experiments to study the effect and identify the solution.’

If you don’t quite believe that this simple ‘trick’ works, I’ve tried it with a couple of pairs of headphones myself and even when trying to mess the cable up in my hands, everything just falls out with no knots, tangles or swearing-in sight. Matthews may have just created the antidote to traumatic tangled cables syndrome.

NVIDIA Shield 2 Launch Set for August

NVIDIA’s Project Shield is without a doubt a huge success and as you can see from our reviews on this compact gaming system (Shield full review, emulation on the Shield, games to play on the loo and Shield as a desktop replacement) it is simply one of our favourite tech gadgets to have at the moment.

With the Shield being undoubtedly popular, who would NVIDIA be if they were not to bring out a fresher updated model at some stage. As it happens they are doing just that and next month we will see the second generation console hitting the shelves.

Built around NVIDIA’s Tegra K1 SoC, the Shield 2 will offer users 16GB of internal memory and 4GB RAM with the capability to stream 1080p content at 60Hz to a connected display. Like the current Shield though, the performance that you experience on the console is largely down to the performance of your desktop gaming system so don’t be surprised if you get laggy performance if you’re running newer games on a yester-year spec. In addition to streaming over a local network the second gen unit is set to offer streaming over the internet and like all things, the connection that you have at home will have a considerable impact on what you can play.

As far as the Android status goes, there is no conformation that Android L is to be featured along with the AEP (Android Expansion Pack) so there is really going to be a lot more to see on that front for now. Although we know that next month will see the new units coming to market, there is not any word as of yet on the pricing, obviously it will demand a premium over the first gen units, but how much of a premium is yet to be announced.

BBC to Trial 4K Transmissions During Commonwealth Games

As 4K televisions are becoming more common on the marketplace and the cost of them starts to rapidly drop, the question now is not if 4K will ever appear, but now when will it be appearing in our homes.

At this year’s World Cup in Brazil, the BBC are conducting a set of 4K broadcast trials to see how the feeds respond to transmission over a long distance, although this is strictly on a R&D basis at this moment in time. Whilst this means that 4K TV owners still have to wait longer for 4K to appear on their end, the BBC has announced that during next years Commonwealth Games in Glasgow they will be making a public showcase of 4K broadcasting, with a display of the 4K content to be found in the Glasgow Science Centre.

Like the Brazil footage, the commonwealth tests are purely for R5D, although they will have a public viewing and although most transmissions are over the air, the 4K feed in Glasgow will be conducted solely over the internet to remove the bandwidth bottleneck that may otherwise occur.

Although all these trails indicate that 4K broadcasting is not a million miles away now, there is still a lot of work to do as a standard for transmitting these feeds is set – with the internet probably to be the most likely candidate due to the bandwidth involved. Either way though, if you want a glimpse of what 4K will look like in the flesh, and you live close to Glasgow, it may be worth taking a look at the live feeds next year.

Verizon Issues Cease and Desist against Netflix – Netflix Stands Their Ground

In a heated debate between the american based ISP Verizon and the entertainment streaming service Netflix, Verizon has issued a cease and desist asking Netflix to stop putting down Verizon’s service but to also to “provide Verizon with any and all evidence and documentation that it possesses substantiating Netflix’s assertion”. Netflix is defending their right to display the message about Verizon’s network traffic issues.

Netflix’s general counsel David Hyman wrote a letter, obtained by QUARTZ to Verizon and  claimed that Verizon were at fault for the poor performance some of their mutual customers were experiencing, not Netflix. Hyman also added that they have placed the internet performance related message “The Verizon network is crowded right now” onto their service to show that it’s due to Verizon’s methods of handling traffic at peak times. Netflix has determined Verizons performance by looking at the way it handles Netflix traffic at peak and non peak times.

Hyman: “We are testing this type of messaging across the U.S. with multiple providers,” he also states in his letter that Verizon tried to “shift blame for our customer’s experience on the Verizon network ‘squarely to Netflix itself’”

The full letter follows below.

Dear Randy,

I am in receipt of your letter dated June 5, 2014.

Your interpretation mischaracterizes our messagingThe message you cite to in your letter merely lets our consumers know that the Verizon network is crowdedWe have determined this by examining the difference between the speed at which the Verizon network handles Netflix traffic at peak versus non-peak timesThe messaging is part of our ongoing transparency efforts to let consumers know their Netflix experience is being affected by congestion on their broadband provider’s networkWe are testing this type of messaging across the US with multiple providers.

Furthermore, your attempt to shift blame for our customers’ experience on the Verizon network “squarely to Netflix itself” disregards Verizon’s responsibility to provide its customers with the service it has promised them. Verizon sells residential Internet access to its customers. In fact, it is my understanding that Verizon actually upsells customers to higher speed packages based on improved access to video services, including Netflix. Verizon’s unwillingness to augment its access ports to major Internet backbone providers is squarely Verizon’s fault. As an ISP, you sell your customers a connection to the Internet. To ensure that these customers get the level of service they pay you for, it is your responsibility to make sure your network, including your interconnection points, have sufficient capacity to accommodate the data requests made by those customers. To try to shift blame to us for performance issues arising from interconnection congestion is like blaming drivers on a bridge for traffic jams when you’re the one who decided to leave three lanes closed during rush hour.

As you are well aware, Netflix, for more than two years, through its Open Connect Program, has been willing to bring the data ISP subscribers request directly to any network for free, including Verizon. Despite our willingness to do so, you have chosen not to participate in the Open Connect Program, but instead have allowed your network connection to Netflix to degrade until we agreed to pay for augmented interconnection. We brought the data right to your doorstep…all you had to do was open your door.

We hope that our recent agreement will soon result in a better Netflix experience for our mutual customers. The current transparency test to which your letter relates is scheduled to end June 16 and we are evaluating rolling it out more broadly. Regardless of this specific test, we will continue to work on ways to communicate network conditions to our consumers. We’re also happy to work with you on ways to improve network transparency to our mutual customers.

Sincerely,
David Hyman
General Counsel

What Verizon’s response to this will be, I’m not sure, but it looks as though Netflix have enough evidence to put up a good fight against whatever card Verizon might play next.

Thank you to QUARTZ for supplying us with this information.

Gangnam Style Passes Two Billion Views On YouTube

Love it or hate it, Psy’s Gangnam Style has undoubtedly been the biggest hit single around the world since its début on YouTube back in 2012. Since then it has taken the world by storm and even though the are many people who can’t stand hearing the track over and over again – myself included, it appears that are large number of people around the world are still obsessed with it. There is no question of doubt that the Korean artist, who has been producing music for the last 13 years, has made the track truly unique, including the iconic ‘horse riding’ dance move and as its popularity has grown, we have seen dozens of parodies and remakes appear online.

As Psy’s fame and fortune has grown, in December 2012, only 5 months after the track was released, Gangman Style became the first video ever to pass through the 1 billion views barrier and now as the track nears its two year anniversary [so-to-speak], Psy claims another YouTube first as the video passes 2 billion hits. To put this into comparison, the next hit video on YouTube’s rankings comes from another controversial love or hate artist – Justin Beiber with his track – Baby, reaching only 1 billion views to date. To add to the list of hits, Psy claims three of the top fifteen top videos on YouTube, alongside the likes of ‘Charlie Bit My Finger – Again!’

Just in case you’ve not heard Gangman Style (in which case I’ll be asking where you’ve been for the last two years), let’s have another listen to the most popular track of the 21st Century.

Nintendo Cut Online Gameplay From Wii and DS Systems

Online gameplay through the Wii and DS consoles has been a big part of the entertainment world, particularly with games such as Mario Kart and Wii Sports, however Nintendo as of yesterday have cut the functionality to play games online, leaving users only the ability to play games in offline mode.

Connection to the internet is still available, so services such as iPlayer, the Internet Channel, the Weather channel and so on is not affected at this time and Nintendo have also made it clear that Wii U and 3DS games are not affected.

Why this change has been made is not yet clear, although I suspect that the closure has been made in a bid to push users towards purchasing the Wii U console and the subsequent games in order to keep the online functionality.  In addition a full list of the games affected has been made, and this can be found over on Nintendo’s website here; affected games.

Although the Wii is not at the forefront of console gaming, it is very popular with social game play in the likes of Mario Kart and Wii Sports and what effect this has on the gaming community is yet to be determined.
