ASUSTOR Launches Powerful High-Capacity AS6208T and AS6210T

ASUSTOR launched two new high-capacity enterprise-class NAS units, the AS6208T and the AS6210T. The only difference between the two units is that one has 8 drive bays and the other one has 10 drive bays. They are powered by an Intel Celeron (Braswell) 1.6GHz quad-core CPU with Boost speeds up to 2.24GHz. This is backed by 4GB dual-channel DDR3L memory which is expandable.

This is a great base for a powerful system that comes with hardware encryption support and 4K capabilities. All that power can be connected through the four built-in Gigabit Ethernet ports for a read and write performance up to 398 MB/s and 355 MB/s respectively in a RAID 5 setup.

There are plenty of USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 ports as well as two eSATA ports. With that amount of extra ports, you can expand the systems even further than with the 8 and 10 internal bays that each support up to 8TB drives.

It’s probably unlikely that a system like this will be used for as a multimedia hub, although it would be perfectly suitable for it. Instead, it is much more likely to be used for surveillance tasks. It is well equipped for both scenarios with its direct usage ability. It features both an HDMI 1.4b connector and an S/PDIF audio link.

As with all other ASUSTOR NAS units, these two new ones come with a 3-year warranty and a suggested retail price of $999 for the AS6210T and $899 for the AS6208T. That’s actually not bad at all.

Introduction


The latest memory kit to arrive for review purposes is part of Muskin’s Blackline Ridgeback range. The sample we received opts for a 16GB capacity, 2400MHz speed and timings of 15-15-15-35. This is achieved with a very respectable voltage rating of 1.2V and showcases the modules’ efficiency. Mushkin is a pioneering memory manufacturer formed in 1994 and continues to release new DIMMs sporting unique designs at a very competitive price point. Unlike their competitors, Mushkin assembles and hand tests each memory kit in the USA while strictly monitoring their production line.

This results in exceptional reliability and minimizes the potential for customer returns. The company also selects low latency modules to find a suitable balance between raw frequency and operating latency. On another note, every Mushkin memory kit is backed with a lifetime warranty and approachable customer service team. Given their reputation in the industry, I expect the memory kit to perform admirably at stock values and have some good overclocking headroom. The product comes in a traditional blister pack, and adopts the slogan, “Gamers take notice, rivals take notes.” I quite like the background design which looks rather striking and adds a dash of colour.

On the rear, there’s a very detailed installation guide containing extremely clear diagrams. Inserting the modules into position is a very simple process, but it’s always good to include instructions for newcomers without any previous system building experience.

A Closer Look

The DIMMs convey a professional look via the neutral colour scheme and should suit a wide range of system builds. Additionally, the angled heat spreaders provide a distinctive appearance without straying too far from the sophisticated, understated design. I’m also really keen on the silver accents, which adds some visual flair. Sadly, the green PCB spoils the black theme somewhat and ruins the overall level of synergy. Although once the modules are installed, you shouldn’t notice the green PCB from a distance. Thankfully, there are some SKUs which already have the same heat spreader design and black PCB to complement it perfectly. Overall, Mushkin has done a commendable job in the product’s aesthetics and ensured it appeals to the core gaming demographic.

Patriot Viper 4 DDR4 3200MHz 16GB (2x8GB) Dual Channel Memory Kit Review

DDR4 memory kits are steadily superseding DDR3 DIMMs due to competitive pricing and the advent of Intel’s LGA1151 chipset which supports speeds in excess of 3200MHz. Furthermore, DDR4 modules require less voltage to remain stable despite the typical increase in memory bandwidth. Recently, professional overclocker Shamino set an astounding world record and overclocked the G.Skill Ripjaws 4 to 4255MHz using a mere 1.3 volts. Clearly, this is an extreme case and the majority of DDR4 kits available to consumers range between 2400MHz and 4000MHz. Plus, the performance difference in gaming tasks primarily revolves around your system’s graphics card, and CPU. Nevertheless, it’s still important to select high-quality DIMMs to keep your PC perfectly stable and compliment the other components.

As you can see, the latest version of the Viper range comes in a variety of capacities and memory speeds to suit a wide range of user requirements. Given the impressive 3200MHz speed, 16-16-16 timings and respectable voltage, I expect to see some superb numbers which legitimately rival the best dual channel kits we’ve tested!

Patriot have adopted a clean, bold design to the memory’s packaging which makes it easy to read the key specifications while admiring the DIMM’s colour scheme. Here we can see a visual run down of the memory’s speed, capacity, XMP version and other essential statistics. Many kits on the market utilize pretty plain blister packs which don’t enthuse a luxury feel. In this case, the packaging draws you in and leaves a very positive initial impression.

On the rear section, there’s information about Patriot’s lifetime warranty, a brief synopsis of the product, and links to the company’s presence across various social media platforms.

A Closer Look

From an aesthetics standpoint, the DIMMs have a rather understated look and targets the mainstream gaming audience. Any red and black heatspreader combination is going to become a popular choice, and the different shades combine quite nicely. Another striking touch is the contrast between the textured black finish and matte section towards the PCB. I’m also quite fond of the sophisticated Viper logo and small gap between the main heatspreader which creates an impressive visual effect. Sadly, the green PCB is difficult to overlook and detracts from the attractive design. If a black PCB was used instead, the memory would be the perfect choice for a high-end build. Despite these qualms, once the RAM is installed, you’re not going to notice the PCB colour in an enclosed chassis.

Patriot Announces New Viper 4 3400MHz Dual Kit for Z170

Patriot originally announced their Viper 4 DDR4 series of memory modules back in January and now they’re expanding that line-up with new and faster versions designed to work optimally with Intel’s latest Skylake CPUs and Z170 platform.

The new modules consists of dual-channel kits with a speed of up to 3400MHz, the previous kits had a maximum speed up to 3000MHz. The new Z170 and Skylake optimized kits will initially be available as 8GB kits with 2x 4GB and 16GB kits with 2x 8GB modules. A perfect amount for normal users and gamers, the target audience, and Patriot can now offer these DDR4 modules in speeds from 2400MHz and all the way up to 3400MHz

The modules feature a high-performance custom heat shield that is said to be structured to withstand the most taxing PC environments and provide continuous stable performance. The Patriot Viper 4 3400MHz dual kit (2x4GB) clocks in with 16-18-18-36 timings and pulls 1.35V of power. The Viper 4 3200MHz dual kit comes with timings of 16-16-16-36 packed into 8GB (2x4GB) and 16GB (4x4GB) Viper red kits.

To ensure stability under these high speeds, each IC will be pre-screened by Patriot to ensure stability and reliability throughout their lifetime. The Patriot Viper 4 dual kits with speeds from 2400MHz to 3400MHz will be available on September 4, 2015 in stores and online. The MSRP is set between $64.99 and $169.99 depending on what version you pick.

G.Skill Demonstrates 4266MHz DDR4 Memory Kits

Breaching the 4GHz memory speed wasn’t enough for G.Skill, so they put two on top of that and showcased two new kits running at 4133MHz and 4266MHz. These speeds are something that we’d only get close to with the older DDR3 memory modules when cooled with LN2, but this isn’t DDR3 anymore.

That is a seriously impressive stock speed that G.Skill’s achieved with these new TridentZ DDR4 memory modules that are specially optimized for the new and 6th generation of Intel Core processors, Skylake, and the accompanying Z170 based motherboards. The two motherboards used in the demonstration at IDF 2015 were an ASRock Z170 OC Formula and an ASUS Maximus VIII Hero. The ASUS ran the slower of the two kits at 4133 MHz while the ASRock got the pleasure of showcasing the impressive 4266MHz DDR4 memory.

Both kits used had a total capacity of 8GB, distributed on two 4GB modules. There sadly weren’t any news on when the modules would be available nor what they’d cost, but I’m sure G.Skill will catch up on that shortly and release the relevant information. Until then, we can dream of having our own system with memory running at 4.3GHz.

Kingston Released New HyperX FURY DDR4 Kits for Skylake

The next generation of Intel processors and new chipsets are almost here and I’m sure there are quite a few people anxious to upgrade to the 6th generation Intel Core processors. A CPU and a motherboard are only part of what you need, you’ll also need some new memory to go along with that as we’re switching from DDR3 to DDR4, at least for the large part. Kingston’s HyperX division is ready for that and just released two new dual-channel HyperX FURY kits for just this, one with 8GB and one with 16GB capacity.

EVGA Enters Memory Market With Black DDR3 and DDR4 Modules

EVGA wasn’t happy with just producing high-end PSUs, motherboards, and graphics cards, they want more. The next region they are venturing into is the realm of memory with the launch of their Superclocked and Super Superclocked high-performance DDR3 and DDR4 memory modules.

The new EVGA SC and SCC are built with both black PCB and black heat spreaders, something I’m sure a lot of our readers like. The complete black design allows for a great contrast or simplistic setup in your system.

There are two sad moments in this news, the first being the phrase “unbeatable combination of price and performance”. That usually means that we won’t see any speed barriers broken and the specifications confirm that.

The DDR3 SC and SCC kits come as dual-channel kits of two pieces with either 4GB or 8GB modules and speed ratings from 1600MHz to 2400MHz. The DDR4 modules don’t go all the way either with just two quad-channel 16GB kits with either 2666MHz or 2800MHz clock rate.

The second sad news is that these modules are exclusively available at Micro Center in the US, at least for now.

The cool thing is that you now are able to build a system almost exclusively with EVGA components. Power supplies, motherboards, graphics cards, and peripherals were already available, and now the RAM modules were added. Now they just need to create their own SSDs and the setup is complete, flash drives are already available so it wouldn’t be that much of a stretch.
