Dota2 Makes the Front Page of The New York Times

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again – eSports is becoming mainstream. Whether you agree with video games being classified as a ‘real sport’ or not, there is no denying that through recent developments in the eSports scene, it’s becoming something very big and very real.

We reported recently of Valve’s Dota 2 international tournament being aired on ESPN which was only fitting given it’s massive 10 million dollar prize purse. But now eSports has reached another pinnacle – Dota 2 finds its way to the front page of the New York Times.

The story reported covers the rise of eSports and marks the beginning of a series detailing how computer games are being developed into a serious spectator sport.

Alongside Twitch.tv being recently purchased by Amazon for $970 million, ESPN airing The International finals on cable television and the amazing numbers that video game sales are generating today, we’re extremely keen to see where eSports is headed next.

Do you classify eSports as a real sport? What would change your view?

Germany v Brazil World Cup Thrashing Broke Twitter Records

The Germany Vs Brazil Semi-final match in this year’s World Cup has certainly caught the attention of any football fan or anyone involved in football after their 7-1 thrashing against the home team a couple of days ago. The thrashing on the pitch was not the only top score to grab people’s attention as twitters servers also got a thrashing through a record-breaking 580,000 tweets per minute being sent around the world.

In a statement following the match, Twitter reported that the new record washed out the previous record which was set earlier this year during the Super Bowl which stood at 24.9m tweets. In comparison this match topped 35.6m tweets.

This new record has been great advertising for Twitter, showing that their growth is still going strong. Other events over the last few years that have stood out on twitter include Beyoncé’s half time performance during last year’s Super Bowl at 268,000 TMP (Tweets per minute), Miley Cyrus’ MTC VMA performance at 360,000 TMP and this year’s Brazil Vs Chile World Cup match, which during penalties topped out at 388,985 TMP.

Although some analysts say Twitter is a dying trend and social media such a Facebook is more popular, this record-breaking event has shown that this is far from the case. With the World Cup final now only a few days away, if Germany give their opponents yet another trashing there is a chance that we could see the current record being broken once again.

GTA V was released to XBox and PlayStation on September 17 around the world making over $800 million in sales on launch day. On day three GTA V passed over $1 billion in sales.

GTA 5 was perhaps one of, if not the most anticipated games for 2013, and it hasn’t even been released for PC yet. Though rumors are speculating that PC gamers wont be waiting long to get in on the chaos of Los Santos and Blaine County. Rumors state that the game will be released as early as November 22.

Rumors of a PC version of Grand Theft Auto V have been rife. Last month, reports stated that the game will indeed be available for PCs, and it will be released November 22, 2013 though games don’t usually release on a Friday, I would assume it would be on either the 19th, or the 26th of November. I wont hold my breath though, as I have been anticipating a release date of around Mid- to Late March.

Are you anticipating the release of GTA V for PC, or are you happy with playing it on console? Let us know what your thoughts are of the newest edition of Grand Theft Auto are. When do you think that we will see GTA V released to PC gamers?
