Functional Human Hearts Generated From Skin Cells

Doctors are constantly being helped by their friends in the technology industry, from 3D printing ears to making veins in a cotton candy machine, people are now able to start replacing damaged parts of themselves with items created from their genetic make up. This technology may have gone one step further with a research group claiming to have created functional human hearts.

The new technique could see people avoiding waiting lists and the risk of their immune system rejecting the new organ. With a low risk of an immune response, the new technique could see a 100% acceptance amongst transplants.

By using skin cells from a patient, the team were able to generate the cardiac muscles found in a heart. In order to turn it into a transplantable heart it needed a structure, something that would take time to develop. Using 73 donor hearts that were considered unsuitable for transplantation, the team removed the living cells leaving only the neutral network required for the heart.

With the ability to replace body parts with artificially grown organs appearing quicker and quicker, it won’t be long before we can repair defects in body parts and ensure that people who suffer injuries to their organs can repair them as easily as a cut on their arm.

Police Body Cameras Pre-Installed With Worm

Police are just one of many organisations that are using technology to help their everyday activities. One of these pieces of technology is body cameras, small devices which can record a policemen’s actions, allowing them to operate and display both their and others actions in court at a later date. With many police forces making these required pieces of technology and disciplining officers who turn them off it is a serious issue when these devices are exploited or misused. So what happens when they are installed with viruses?

Martel Body Cameras are supplied with GPS and are sold and marketed for use by official police departments. It would seem though that users who plug in these devices get more than they bargained for when iPower Technologies began testing the devices.

iPower Technologies are a network integrator looking at creating a cloud-based system for storing police and government videos, so during the course of their testing of products they quickly discovered something shocking. The Martel body camera came pre-installed with Win32/Conflicker.B!inf virus, a worm.

The worm in question, once unleashed, automatically spreads across the network and the internet attempting to spread it to other systems, a serious impact if the systems are meant to be secure, as government agencies expect of theirs. iPower have since contacted Martel but are yet to receive an official acknowledgement of the problem, as such they have released the information regarding this matter in a blog post. They state that the reason they have released the information is due to the severity of the security implications that these devices pose with their presence within government and police forces around the US.

How Effective Is Body Armour Against An Assault Rifle?

This question is like a Russian roulette version of popular website Wikihow, anyway, body armour is deployed with the aim of being an essential form of protection against the most violent of circumstances, quick but interesting fact on this, the term “bullet proof vest” is not actually correct, manufacturers describe their products as “bullet resistant” and by doing so this places a mental caveat that ensures the user feels aware that they are in fact not indestructible.

Back to the original point, how effective is a body armour-plate? To test this in a practical way, a Youtube channel by the name of “Demolition Ranch” decided to shoot at a piece of body armour while using an ARAK-21 XRS gun, if you’re wondering, this gun is a hybrid of both the AR-15 and AK-47. The Facebook page of Demolition Ranch describes itself as “making you smile with guns” only in the US.

Below is the video, after conducting the experiment it was found that a piece of ceramic body armour could absorb 8 rounds before finally being breached, this is theoretically impressive but the effectiveness would depend on factors including distance etc. Body armour has a ceramic layer that is designed to break up the bullet and a composite layer of fabrics to hold the bullet from wounding the individual.

Body armour does indeed work and offers a good level of protection against, well death, but as good as the armour is, it can still be penetrated with dire consequences. The maker of the gun that was used in the experiment is a company by the name of Faxon Firearms; according to their website it states the company are “proud defenders of the 2nd Amendment”, too bad this cannot be amended, oh wait.

3D Printed Sternum And Ribs For Cancer Patient

3D Printing has taken off in recent years, with everything from toys to houses being designed and built by anyone with a computer (and a big enough printer). Some of the biggest advantages of the 3D printer are quite simply those provided to medical sciences, with advances allowing people to print items that could help people in ways unthought of several years ago, such as a 3D printed skull for a 3-year-old girl in china. The latest though is another step, with a set of ribs and sternum being printed for a 54-year-old man.

Medical company Anatomics and CSIRO’s 3D printing facility developed the technology required to 3D print the titanium sternum and ribcage implant that was used. In this instance, the gentlemen had several bones removed that had been affected by a cancerous tumour, called chest wall sarcoma.

Crediting the surgery as a success, Surgeon José Aranda stated that “to his knowledge this is the first 3D titanium printed sternum (made through) custom-made processes”. What this means is that in place of a regular sheet of titanium the implant was actually constructed and designed before being built, making it an easier fit and more accurate to the original autonomy of the gentlemen involved.

iPhone 6C Rumoured to Have a 4-Inch Display and Metallic Body

There are always speculations about what the next Apple devices will boast. However, sometimes these speculations turn out to be true, so here it is. According to a blog post on MyDrivers.com posted a pic, emphasising how the upcoming iPhone 6C would look like.

The blog also mentions that the global investment banking firm, Jefferies, said Apple is still considering small screens for their low-end handset, which means that we have a lot of chances to see a 4-inch iPhone 6C this fall. In addition to the latter, Apple is rumoured to ditch the cheap plastic body for a full-on metallic body. However, this might mean that the price would be bumped up a bit since metallic bodies are more expensive than plastic ones.

The investment firm also hints that Foxconn Technologies will be in charge of shipping most of the iPhone 6C models, which is to be expected since Apple used Foxconn as their main supplier for their components in the past. However, take the information with a grain of salt, since rumours are just rumours until they are officially announced. But since we are talking about Apple here, we are definitely going to see what they have cooking right before they plan on shipping it.

Seattle Police Launches YouTube Channel to Share Body Camera Footage

Police body cameras have been a big source of contention lately. With various police shootings in the US, and the subsequent protests, many have called to have body cameras introduced for officers. Well, Seattle Police have gone one step further.

The force has begun uploading footage recorded from the cameras to YouTube. Now you might wonder how they can do this with there being many members of the non-consenting public being filmed in these videos. Well, if you watch one of their videos below, you’ll see how. They essentially turn the videos into a hazy blur, using a filter to make individuals indistinguishable.

So, while you might be interested to experience life as a police officer in Seattle, be prepared to experience life as an officer with an eye condition.

General Electric has been showing of the capabilities of its new computerised tomography (CT) scanner, and the results are stunning.

The Revolution CT, though introduced in 2013, has only been in hospital and clinic use since last September, and doctors and patients alike are impressed; doctors because the images the Revolution produces are some of the most detailed and illustrative as they get, and patients because GE’s machine emits less radiation and is more comfortable than any previous CT scanner.

Cicadia 1.0: One Mans Goal To Become Cyborg

Have you ever thought about death? What about Life? I know I have, but I have never thought about becoming a cyborg.

Motherboard recently reported about a man with a goal, a goal to become a cyborg. Tim Cannon, self proclaimed “Biohacker”. Cannon’s goal is to live for a thousand year, and with this goal he has designed a computer chip that he has had implanted under his skin. The chip transmits his biometric data so that he is able to track his health on an Android device. Will this chip help bring a better understanding of how our bodies work?

Cannon is unable to go to a doctor, a plastic surgeon to have the chip placed under his skin. Instead, he the sought help of body modification enthusiast Steve Haworth, who used his own tools to cut open an area on Cannon’s arm and separate the skin from the fatty tissue in order to place the device in his arm. Since Haworth is not a board-certified surgeon, he was unable to use anesthetics. Once the procedure was complete he reported that he was completely exhausted.

The implant is called Circadia 1.0 which has an open-source platform, allows users to have control over the data, how it is collected and used. This implantable device can read biomedical data and transmits via Bluetooth. Allowing users to gather weeks even months of medical data in which the user can store for personal viewing. This device is strictly designed as a body modification/art purposes and is not a medical device.

Cicadia is designed to give users a better quality of life. For example Cannon explains

“I think that our environment should listen more accurately and more intuitively to what’s happening in our body… So if, for example, I’ve had a stressful day, the Circadia will communicate that to my house and will prepare a nice relaxing atmosphere for when I get home: dim the lights, let in a hot bath.”

Though it seems that the chip is still in its developmental phase, it has been said that it should be accessible to enthusiasts of the body modification community. To have the chip implanted will cost someone around $200 while the chip will cost around $500.
