In this day and age, we are integrating technology into everything, but one thing that seems to just get smarter and smarter is traveling. From automated shuttles to car charging roads, it seems clear that people want smart technology in their cars. The problem being is that a lot of people are being ignored, such as those that ride bikes. This is where the Smart Windshield by Samsung hopes to help bikers catch up a little.
The Smart windshield is just a concept at this moment in time, but with the technology already there and a market prime for the picking we don’t see why interest in this product isn’t higher than it should be to turn it into a real product.
While other ideas for “smart” bike technology have resulted in heads-up displays (HUDs) being placed within the Helmet, Samsung is looking to put it on the bike. Using a small projector that displays a minimal view of what’s needed, the display is projected onto a small sheet of plastic at the front of the bike. The end result is a screen that can tell you the time, give you the next step in your directions or even alert you who’s phoning and texting you so you can pull over and take the message. With an app and wifi system used to communicate between your phone and the bike, it follows a setup that’s available in most GPS systems and even some cars directly.
Do you ride a bike? Would you use this and if so would you be willing to buy certain screens or are helmets betters places to these kinds of displays? Personally, if a phone pops up in front of my face every time someone called me, I might get distracted and freak out a little, so anything you can opt in to looking at seems like a good idea to me.
The term driverless isn’t anything new and it is probably most known in relation to cars and Google’s self-driving car project that’s been going on for years now. But we’ve also heard of driverless lorries coming to the UK, driverless pods in London, and even driverless Formula E racing as well as oversized quad-copters for personal usage, but driverless bicycles is one I haven’t heard of before.
The driverless bike, or i-Bike as it has been named, is the brainchild of Ayush Pandey and Subhamoy Mahajan, two students from IIT Kharagpur, India. The whole idea started with an idea that is as noble as the result is brilliant: The two wanted to build a simple vehicle that could help disabled people get more out of life by increasing their freedom. Now that’s an idea we all can get behind.
The i-Bike has autonomous steering, brakes, driving, and balancing mechanisms that can work completely on their own as well as aids to just help you with the part that might be troublesome for you.
Just riding a bicycle wasn’t the only problem the students tried to solve, parking and retrieving a bike can be equally challenging for a disabled person as bicycle locations by default rarely have much in disability friendliness. You wouldn’t expect them to ride a bicycle, so it isn’t out of bad intentions.
“We saw some differently abled people who could ride bicycles but had to face many problems when trying to take their bikes out from the parking space, as most such spaces are not disabled friendly. To tackle this problem we started working to make a bicycle that would be controlled wirelessly,” says Ayush, a fourth year Mechanical Engineering student
You can ride the i-Bike manually or you can get help from the dual locomotion technology. The autonomous driving is handled with the help of GPS as well as lasers and sonar based sensors to avoid obstacles in its path. The destination is set by an Android app that sends an SMS to the i-Bike. Upon receiving this, it will start its journey.
None of the techniques used is new as such, but this combination of them is awesome. It has a unique and affordable software architecture that enables it to follow specialised bicycle lanes as they are found in many countries already. It also offers live tracking and wireless control mechanism on top of all that.
What started as a team of two is now comprised of 13 undergraduate students from various departments of IIT Kharagpur, all working together and making up the i-Bike team. Since the project was started back in October 2014, the team has won several awards, most recently the innovation challenge organised by KPIT Technologies where they won first prize.
The trainer wheels that have been used for balancing can easily be retracted by a switch and the same goes for the steering aids that also can be turned on and off by the flick of a switch.
The i-Bike could solve many problems in urban cities and crowded spaces. Whether you want to prevent theft by sending you bike home, retrieve it where ever you are in order to get home, or just want to send it on a cruise of its own, the i-Bike can do it. It would also allow new options for bicycle sharing centres where you could rent a bike, drive where you need to go, and then send it back home again on its own. The same way you could order it back via your smartphone no matter where you are located, and you won’t even have to pedal yourself.
Once the team has the patent, they plan to collaborate with companies willing to start bicycle sharing centres in India – and hopefully this kind of technology will make it to the rest of the world too.
Electric cars are all the rage these days. With big companies like Tesla and even public transport like buses and shuttles in airports and between towns. So why do the public not take up electric cars if they are cheaper to run and better for the environment? Two big problems, first being that the batteries drain quickly and secondly the cost of the cars; one man hopes to have solved the second problem.
Mark Frohmayers came up with the idea eight years ago, the idea of creating an electric vehicle that would be great for a little runaround and would come in quite cheaply. With all the companies building large vehicles, Frohmayers saw a gap in the market where people could just afford a simple electric vehicle.
Arcimoto was born, a start-up for affordable electric vehicles, and has since shown off a few three-wheeled prototypes, but sadly over the eight years the company never quite felt happy with the overall goal. That was until now, with a car that meets all the criteria they set out, and it will cost less than $12,000 (£7772 approximately).
Their latest model, the SRK, ditches the steering wheel. The three-wheeled vehicle features two seats and the vehicle is officially classed as a motorcycle and features a range of 70 miles with speeds up to 85miles per hour. Only 105 inches long, the vehicle fits in small spaces and with the option to fully enclose the SRK (instead of the frame style protective shell).

So around four months ago we reported on a Kickstarter that was launched to raise funds for a hoverbike. That’s right, a bike that uses the same idea as a drone to help it hover. After raising nearly twice as much as it initially intended the UK-based company has now got a new client, The US Army.
The US Department of Defence announced the deal with Malloy Aeronautics today. With the option to operate remote controlled or with a human pilot, the small craft is more controllable and maneuverable in tight spaces and due to the blades being guarded the chance of someone getting themselves or their clothing caught is drastically reduced.
Before the deal is finalised Malloy are required to develop a full-size model, from which the DoD will develop military prototypes from. With the cheaper, more economic vehicles being designed for both civilian and military use now, it may not be long before those hover vehicles in fiction start become reality.
Malloy told Reuters that they consider the vehicle ideal for small cargo delivery missions (similar to a what Amazon hope to do) or search and rescue missions. They also suggested surveillance, but I think if you spotted one of these down your road you would get a little too curious.

Closca has announced its new Fuga helmet that folds down into a smaller size for easy storage. The helmet is made of three shell parts that can collapse down and still remain safe when worn as a helmet.
Closca has stated that the new Fuga helmet has already passed certification testing in Europe, Canada, and the US. The helmet is made up of polystyrene and polycarbonate which are common in bike helmets. The innovative new design of the Fuga has won the Red Dot Design Award 2015. Another feature that you don’t see every day in helmets is that this one is NFC connected, though it is not clear on the specifics of that. The helmet is available for pre-order for $75 and will ship later this spring.
Ford recently revealed two prototype e-bikes at the Mobile World Congress that aim to make travelling around cities a bit safer. The two e-bikes are called MoDe:Me and MoDe:Pro and have a 200-watt electric motor, along with a 9-amp per hour battery. They are said to have a top speed of up to 25 km/h.
The bikes feature a rear-facing sensor that alerts the rider if a car is approaching quickly from behind by making the handlebars vibrate. Also, if you have an app open, it will also show the warning on the display.
There are also lights on the side of the handlebars and read of the bikes to warn a car’s driver of a possible impact with the bike, suggesting him or her to slow down in order to avoid it.
Both bikes are said to connect to Ford’s prototype app named MoDe:Link, currently compatible only with the iPhone 6. The app helps the riders plan their route and helps with direction by giving feedback through the handlebars, telling the rider when to turn. Blinking indicators are said to also automatically activate in order to inform other drivers of a turn being made by the rider.
Due to the bikes being foldable, the app can take the user to a bus or train stop, should it be quicker than any alternative. It is said to also display the cost of any public transport fees to the destination.
Other key features within the app include identifying bike-friendly roads and generate warning feedbacks regarding other potential hazards. To be noted is that the DoMe:Pro is designed for couriers, having the ability to be folded and stored in the back of a van, while the DoMe:Me is designed for regular commuters.

We all know how easy to use drones are. Many of us have taken to the skies with a drone, performing tricky stunts and captured amazing video footage, but what if we could ride one of those drones?
Well, this project, the ‘Hoverbike’, is said to be exactly that. It utilises drone-like technology to make manned-flying easy and even cheap. Its creators say that pretty much anyone can get the experience of flying a helicopter at a significantly lower price and with significantly less training using the Hoverbike. The most exciting thing however, is that all of this is apparently just around the corner.
The developers of the bike have had a successful Kickstarter campaign, drawing more than double the money they requested. They did this through selling scaled drone prototypes that backers could receive to see the Hoverbike technology in action.

CES has given us yet another ‘smart’ device. Earlier today everyone was talking about a smart belt, but now it’s all about the smart pedal. Yes, you heard me correctly, a smart pedal, for your bicycle.
The Connected Cycle pedal acts as a tracking device for your bike. That can mean tracking of the bike itself and of course fitness tracking. The pedal can be used to track down your bike if it’s stolen for example and it can also be used for things like tracking distances and producing fitness data via its companion iOS app.
On the security side of things, a push notification can be sent to your phone if your bike is moved from its last location and it can track it from there. For fitness, the pedal records things like speed, incline and distance and can produce useful data like calories burnt thanks to your cycling.
The pedal doesn’t require charging thankfully, as it apparently produces its own energy from the movement it’s subjected to. It also helpfully comes with a second identical dummy pedal, that can match your ‘smart’ one, so you don’t have odd pedals on your bike. The pedals will come in black, red, green, blue, and orange.
Pricing and a release date has not yet been revealed.
If you ride a bicycle, you likely ride it in the dark. If you don’t ride in the dark, you might ride at dusk or dawn. Riding a bicycle even in daylight is dangerous, but riding it in the dark or even near dark can be dangerous. You might notice signs on the road that state that there is a “Daylight Headlamp Section” of road, this is to provide better visibility to other drivers on the road. Revolights sticking with the standard of keeping a reflector in the wheel, but making a slight change incorporating LED lighting directly onto the wheels. Essentially making you visible to everyone on the road when visibility might be at a minimum.
Revolights original LED bike lighting system was not easy to install, so the company completely rebuilt the system and came up with Revolights City v2.0 which are bicycle wheels with the lights built into them! The lights are designed to increase the riders visibility to motorists, hopefully preventing deadly accidents. The wheel comes with removable batteries that last for up to four hours of lighting they are rechargeable via USB.
The Revolights are kind of like a light show for the street, though, that is not their intent, their intent is to save lives. I am sure that is just what they will do, hopefully preventing thousands of accidents each year. Unfortunately safety does come with a price tag. And for this price tag they had be indestructible, currently available for pre-order, starting at $229 + S&H. The wheel comes in multiple sizes so when you order you will want exact dimensions.
