Stephen Hawking Reveals His Thoughts About Artificial Intelligence

If you are thinking about a Terminator scenario when hearing the word ‘advanced artificial intelligence’, then you are not alone. Stephen Hawking makes his own predictions and states that artificial intelligence will overtake humans in just 100 years. This does not necessarily mean we will become extinct or enslaved by AI, but we do have to tread carefully when it comes to this technology.

“Computers will overtake humans with AI at some within the next 100 years. When that happens, we need to make sure the computers have goals aligned with ours.” Stephen Hawking stated. “Our future is a race between the growing power of technology and the wisdom with which we use it.” he added.

To put it plainly, it means that technology advances so fast that we can barely get a grip on it. This is why Hawking warns companies who deal with AI technology should take it down a notch and coordinate with others operating in the same field.

However, we may have went past that point today. Reports show that over 150 startup companies in Silicon Valley are already working on AI and more are expected to enter the latter area of research in the future too.

I tend to agree with Hawking’s last paragraph because let’s face it, in the end we will be speaking to a fully conscious machine sooner or later. But it is how we react to it and it reacts to us that will make the decisive moment.

December Sees 4G Mobile Vehicle Networking Products Released

Finally, we are one step closer to Knightrider’s sidekick car ‘KITT‘ becoming a real-life thing! Shenzhen’s mobile 4G network construction has doubled in recent times and will be reportedly being utilized in motor vehicles as soon as December, 2014.

According to a report on November the 16th, Tencent Technology claim that later this month China Mobile will launch a 4G network based within motor vehicles (cars), allowing for advanced development of car networking and various other tasks. This technology will allow the car to place internet, entertainment, navigation, security, rescue, diagnostics and other functions all into one package. It will also provide users the ability to monitor fault checking and real-time remote viewing through their mobile devices – alongside applications for anti-theft and location methods.

Some other useful features on offer include mobile electronic central locking, cargo monitoring, route planning, yaw management and pet monitoring services.

The first 4G licenses were issued by the Ministry of Industry Operations to China Mobile earlier this year in April under the titles of “4G Utility Vehicle Machine”, “Travel Guardian” and “Bus Steward”. All of these were debut at the 2014 Bejing International Automotive Exhibition.

Shenzen Mobile has reportedly opened the first 10,000 4G base stations, citing Shenzhen as the forefront of China’s 4G technology. Shenzhen has now been provided with 4G coverage density as seen similarly in many major western nation cities. Why the upgrade from the commonly offered 3G? 4G technology offers up to 218 M/second transfer speeds, allowing for advanced applications such as what you’ve been reading above.

Bullet-Sized Homing Missiles Undergoing Tests at Darpa

We have seen a lot of advancements in military equipment and devices in recent years, but it seems that there is more to come. The latest news shows that the US military has been testing .50-calibre bullets with in-flight guidance systems, having the ability to turn the projectiles into small homing missiles.

The miniaturized homing missiles are apparently being made by Darpa’s Extreme Accuracy Tasked Ordinance, or EXACTO for short, having them be designed with the ability to adjust their trajectory in-flight in order to hit targets that are not precisely aimed. This means that every bullet can hit any type of target, including moving, high-speed or long-range targets, without the need to compensate with other external factors, such as weather, wind or even elevation in some cases.

“For military snipers, acquiring moving targets in unfavourable conditions, such as high winds and dusty terrain commonly found in Afghanistan, is extremely challenging with current technology. It is critical that snipers be able to engage targets faster, and with better accuracy, since any shot that doesn’t hit a target also risks the safety of troops by indicating their presence and potentially exposing their location.” say Darpa on their website.

It is said that the EXACTO system is made up of both the bullet and the guidance system which tracks and delivers the projectile to the target. The bullets themselves are said to be the size of a large pen, having them to fit in both .50-calibre snipers and machine-guns. However, the new tech is still far away from reaching the battlefield. While tests show the first ever projectiles and their results in the field, more tests are said to be required in order to make the new tech ready for the actual battlefield.

Walking Bio-Bots Powered By Muscles Becoming a Reality

First of all, a ‘bio-bot’ is a machine which uses synthetic 3D-printed material with biological muscle tissue. Having stated the latter, researchers from the University of Illinois have apparently developed the so-called bio-bots in question, taking us one step further into the future of technological advancements.

Some might wonder how the bio-bots work and what is so special about them. The answer lies in the muscle fibers, having them spiked with electricity in order to contract. The muscles are attached to flexible 3D-printed skeleton frameworks, resulting in bending the skeleton when the muscles contract and reverting back to its original state when they relax. This in the end produces movement, combining biological and synthetic material to achieve such an action, thus the name ‘bio-bot’.

It is said that researchers have been working on similar projects since 2012. At that time, a walking bio-bot prototype used rat heart cells in order to provide motion. However, the researchers found out that the rat cells were not responding well to the induced electricity and couldn’t control when they fired. However, it appears that the ‘new version’ has solved this problem.

“Skeletal muscles cells are very attractive because you can pace them using external signals,” head researcher Rashid Bashir said. “We want to have different options that could be used by engineers to design these things.”

The group of researchers from Illinois sees bio-bots potentially useful for surgical aids and drug delivery vehicles. The group also emphasized that, having their own neurons, they could even recognize and respond to light and chemical stimuli. The group has apparently published their findings in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, which is a good place to get more details about the bio-bots in question.
