SilverStone Releases Compact Titanium Certified PSUs

The power supply is one of the parts of your system where you never should cheap out as it’s the backbone of your system that supplies anything with power. SilverStone now released three new models in the Strider Titanium series, the ST60F-TI, ST70F-TI, and ST80F-TI, that not only come with great specs and impressive titanium certification, they are also very compact and fully modular at the same time.

The new Strider power supplies meet the strict 80 PLUS Titanium efficiency rating where they have to stay above 90% efficiency, even at very low load conditions. This is a tricky thing to achieve and that is why we mostly have seen large units with this certification. SilverStone cracked this and are now offering these ratings for the Strider 600W, 700W, and 800W power supply units in a compact size.

The new units are only 150mm deep and at the same time they come with a fully modular cable system. This allows for the usage in any ATX compatible case with ease and it also allows you to make a great cable management. Speaking of cables, the new Strider units come with flat cables that should make the overall cable routing easier. They have better flexibility and allow for tighter folding.

SilverStone’s ST60F-TI, ST70F-TI, and ST80F-TI are built around a single +12B rail design which allows it to deliver the best possible power to all connected components. It has a ±3% regulation and low ripple & noise performance for high stability. The PSUs are built with all Japanese capacitors and rated for 24/7 continuous power output. Overall, some amazing looking power supplies.

These world’s smallest fully modular ATX power supplies with 80 PLUS Titanium efficiency will be available starting next week for an MSRP of $161.70 USD for the ST60F-TI, $178.75 USD for the ST70F-TI and 195.80 USD for the ST80F-TI.

EVGA Announces 700B Value Power Supply

You should always make sure that the power supply in your system is of decent quality, after all, it is the heart of your system that supplies every single part with power. That is a thing that can get tricky when you are building a system on a budget, but still need a large amount of power. EVGA has a power supply for just this scenario with their 700B 700W PSU where performance meets value as they call it.

The 700B name is made up of two things, the 700 watts of power it can deliver continuously and the B comes from its 80 Plus Bronze certification that guarantees over 85% efficiency under typical loads. The power supply is built around a single +12V line supporting 56A. The one thing that might put a dampener on this PSU for some people is the fact that it is completely non-modular which makes it harder to create a proper cable management.

EVGA naturally built in a full set of heavy-duty protections to ensure that nothing gets damaged in unusual situations. The 700B includes Over Voltage Protection (OVP), Under Voltage Protection (UVP), Over Power Protection (OPP), Short Circuit Protection (SCP), Over Current Protection (OCP), and Over Temperature Protection (OTP).

EVGA is backing the 700B power supply with a 3-year warranty, but they didn’t announce a pricing at this time.

Chieftec A-135 APS-600SB Series 600W Power Supply Review

Introduction & Packaging

Chieftec may not be the best-known name in the business, but they’re certainly going strong and have done a lot of work in the B2B market, with a growing presence in the consumer market over the last few years. They’re back on eTeknix again today with one of their latest power supplies, the APS-600SB, a 600W unit with an 80 Plus Bronze efficiency rating. It may not be anything fancy, but its core focus is to get the job done without spending any more than you have to for the level of performance and reliability you need.

In terms of spec, the APS-600SB features a 14cm fan, as well as multiple +12v rails with more than enough power for some dual GPU configurations. The non-modular design isn’t going to win over many perfectionists, but you’ll certainly find all the connectors you’re likely to need.

The packaging is pretty straight forward, with a stylish picture of the product on the front. If I’m honest, I know this isn’t the best-looking unit in the world and looking at the darkened image on the box, Chieftec know it; not knocking that, this is a practical unit first and foremost.

In the box, you’ll find the owner’s manual, an AC power cable and the fitting screws.

Chieftec SFX 500GD-C 500w Power Supply Review

Introduction & Packaging

Compact systems are becoming increasingly popular, with many chassis now being so small, that they no longer support the common ATX PSU standard. This is where smaller form factor power supplies, such as the Chieftec SFX 500GD-C we have on the test bench today, come into play. The smaller form factor makes them perfect for compact system builds and with 500W of power on offer, this tiny PSU still has more than enough juice to power a decent gaming system, making it a prime choice for those building a small LAN gaming system, HTPC style gaming system, or even just those who have limited room for a desktop rig/workstation.

In terms of hardware, the GD-C ticks all the right boxes, with a powerful 40A +12V rail, modular cables for easy installation and cable management, 80 Plus Gold efficiency and all the safety features we have come to expect from a modern unit. Of course, the real big, or should I say little, feature is that it’s all housed in a tiny little unit.

Packaging & Accessories

The box is nothing too fancy, but it does have a nice image of the PSU on the front, which shows off the modular cable design.

There’s very little in the box, so little that you’ll only find a user manual beside the PSU and modular cables. Annoyingly, there wasn’t even an AC mains cable. Fortunately, we have a few of those lying around, so that’s no going to cause issues with our testing.

SilverStone Releases World’s Smallest Platinum Certified PSUs

The times where a powerful PC system needed to take up a lot of space is long gone, at least when we think in home use scenarios and not server farms. Size is one thing and we like to keep it small and out of the way most of the times, we just want the systems to work and provide their services, preferable as efficient as possible. With these two things in mind, SilverStone created the new Strider Platinum series of power supplies that are the world’s smallest 80 Plus Platinum full-modular ATX power supplies.

SilverStone offers three new versions in the Strider Platinum series, a 550W model (ST55F-PT), a 650W model (ST65F-PT), and a 750W model (ST75F-PT). All three units come with the same benefit of only being 140mm deep, that is quite a bit smaller than usual. The fully modular cables allow for a neat setup where you only connect what you actually need. The highly efficient PSUs are 24/7 certified for continuous power output with an operating temperature of 40 degrees Celcius.

The single +12V rail is class-lading and the PSUS have a strict plus minus 3% voltage regulation and low ripple and noise. Speaking of noise, not electronical but audible, the ultra-silent 120mm fan with intelligent semi-fanless operation keeps that down too.

The new SilverStone Strider Platinum PSUs will be available on October the 19th for an MSRP of $131.88, $143.88, and $165.48 respectively, exclusive VAT.

be quiet! Dark Power Pro 11 550W Power Supply Review

Introduction & Packaging

It’s no secret that be quiet! make some of the best PSUs money can buy, we’ve seen time after time that they can deliver great looking and performing products. A few months ago, we took a look at one of their latest and greatest units, the Dark Power Pro 11 1200W PSU and it was certainly impressive, offering excellent power delivery, whisper quiet performance and gorgeous aesthetics, but what if you don’t need huge amounts of power for your system, but you still want a very high-quality unit? That’s where the new Dark Power Pro 11 low-wattage models come into play.

“The Dark Power Pro 11 is the most advanced high-end power supply from be quiet!. Massive power, Overclocking Key, which can switch between quad and single-rail operation, an almost inaudible performance due to a be quiet! SilentWings 3 fan and – for us – the highest efficiency certification in the form of 80PLUS Platinum are some of the features of the new Dark Power Pro-models.” – be quiet!

At our disposal today, we have the Dark Power Pro 11 550w, offering more than enough power for a single-GPU system, workstation, office system or HTPC. Don’t think lower wattage means less features though, as you’ll still find 80 Plus Platinum efficiency, semi-modular cables and premium grade build-quality throughout.

Packaging and accessories

The box is nicely designed and features the typical black design we see on all be quiet! products. What is interesting is seeing the “high-end” branded together with 550W, as lower wattage units are rarely high-end.

Around the back, a quick run-down of all the included cables and features, but we will, of course, take a much closer look at these in a moment.

In the box, you’ll find the AC power cable, user manual, OC key, fan cables and a collection of cable ties. The OC key is a nice touch, as it can be mounted in a space PCI-e expansion slot, giving you a physical switch for toggling between single and multiple rails on the PSU; not everyone will need such a thing, but it’s nice to have. The other welcome addition is the fan extension cables, as the PSU can have fans connected directly to it.

Enermax DIGIFANLESS 550W Power Supply Review

Introduction & Packaging

The latest Enermax power supply landed in the eTeknix officer recently and while I admit, it can sometimes be difficult to get excited about a power supply, I am very much so about this one. The DIGIFANLESS packs two important features, as the name would suggest; it’s fanless and it is digital. Fanless power supplies are an incredible addition to your system, especially if you’re trying to build a completely silent rig, as the removal of the fan means you’ll never hear a single noise from the unit and that’s certainly no bad thing!

Despite being passively cooled, the DIGIFANLESS still promises to churn out two very impressive figures. The first is that it’ll run up to 550W, which is more than enough for a single GPU system and a powerful CPU. The second is that it will deliver 80 Plus Platinum rated levels of efficiency. Let’s just recap, digital monitoring, passive cooled silent performance, 80 Plus Platinum, 550W of power and if that’s not enough to open your eyes wide, he’s the classic “but that’s not all” sales pitch. It also has fully modular, has individually braided premium grade cables, all Japanese capacitors, is rated to run 24/7 and comes with a 5-year warranty! Enough dancing around, let’s jump right in and take a closer look!

The packaging is really nicely designed, giving a good rundown of the specifications and I’m already getting a nice “premium” vibe here.

Around the back, a nice run down of all the cables, the digi features, the high-quality capacitors and more.

Normally the packaging isn’t something I talk about too much, but the DIGIFANLESS was so well packaged, I just had to take a quick picture.

In the box, you’ll find the mains power cable, the digital link cable, the owner’s manual and a protective storage bag.

SilverStone SX600-G SFX Series Power Supply Review

Introduction & Packaging

Silverstone is well-known for their high-end products, having created some very impressive power supplies, coolers, chassis products and a whole lot more over the years. One of their strongest areas is certainly in the power supply market, even more so when you look at smaller form factor units such as SFX. The benefits of SFX units are obvious, as they’re much smaller than ATX PSUs, which makes them great for slim and compact chassis designs, such as the RVZ01 which Silverstone produces. These slim chassis are often designed for compact workstations, or HTPC use and more recently “Steam Machine” style rigs. Squeezing a massive graphics card into a compact chassis isn’t impossible, but powering a monster GPU is not so easily accomplished with a tiny power supply and that’s where the new SX600-G comes into play.

The SX600-G packs an impressive range of features, such as 600W 80 Plus Gold Efficiency power delivery, more than enough for even the most powerful graphics cards on the market today, with some power headroom for overclocking of your CPU and GPU alike. In true TV infomercial style “but that’s not all”, this unit also features an intelligent semi-fanless design, allowing for zero RPM operation in low load or cooler environments, 100% modular cables, a powerful single 12V+ rail, and dual PCI-E 8/6-pin connectors; in short, this unit almost sounds too good to be true.

The packaging is nicely designed, with lots of bright colours and a good photo of the product, as well as a quick run down of the main specifications.

All the technical stuff is around the back of the box, not much interest to most consumers, but in short the PSU promises to be efficient and provide stable power output; pretty much what any PSU should do really.

In the box, you’ll find a few bits of documentation, an SFX to ATX adaptor bracket, some mounting screws and the AC power cable.

SilverStone Release New Redundant PSUs in the Gemini Series

One of the most critical components of your system is the power supply. When that fails, nothing runs and that is where redundant power supplies come into play. The second one will kick in if the first should fail or the other way around. SilverStone built upon the previous Gemini models and created the new GM400-S, GM500G, and GM600-G redundant power supplies in a convenient PS2 frame.

As the name suggests, the new Gemini units come with two times 400W, 500W, and 600W load capacity. The 400W model only has an 80 Plus Silver certification where the 500W and 600W models come with an 80 Plus Gold certification. By combining industrial grade components, higher efficiency design, and the inclusion of PMBus 1.2, these power supplies should provide a stable and secure 24/7 solution that will fit in about any chassis.

The units are designed to be hot-swappable and come with convenient pull-out handle bars. The entire range is using an Active PFC, but they won’t come as cheap as a normal power supply. That is pretty much a given, considering that you actually get two when purchasing one. The GM400-S 400W PSU comes with an MSRP of $549.45 price tag, the GM500-G with a $593.45 price tag, and the GM600-G with a $636.79 price tag, all without VAT. That is a hefty price, but it is worth it when needed and considering what you get.

EVGA Introduced 600W 80 PLUS Value Power Supply

One of the tough decisions when building a new system is always the power supply. You’ll want something that can provide stable and safe power, something to be efficient, and something that won’t break your budget. EVGA has thought of those people too and introduced the value-based EVGA 600W 80 PLUS power supply.

With 600W of continuous power and 49A on a single +12V rail, the EVGA 600W provides enough power to power most systems with all its parts, including Nvidia SLI setups. The compact designed PSU also helps you to save space in your chassis and all cables are all sleeved.

The PSU has all the protections you will want: OVP (Over Voltage Protection), UVP (Under Voltage Protection), OCP (Over Current Protection), OPP (Over Power Protection), SCP (Short Circuit Protection), and OTP (Over Temperature Protection). Noise shouldn’t be an issue either as the PSU comes with a quiet and intelligent auto fan for near-silent operation.

The used fan is a 120mm sleeve bearing fan and the entire PSU measures 85 x 150 x 140 mm. It has an MTBF of 100K hours and isn’t built with Japanese capacitors as we’re used to from the high-end models. The noise level is rated at 24-26dBa typical.

The EVGA 600W 80 PLUS PSU is backed by a 3-year warranty, but no pricing was revealed yet except for the term value.

CRYORIG Presented IoT Enabled PSU

Let’s face it, most new PC hardware is just old shoes in new boxes, with improvements but still basically the same. But once in a while a new product comes along that has a nice twist and in this case it is a power supply.

CRYORIG displayed their newest idea at Computex, an Internet of Things (IoT) enabled power supply. The CRYORIG Pi is only a proof of concept so far and it is working and being demonstrated. The actual line of products is targeted for a release in 2016 with wattage ranging from 600 to +1000 Watts and 80 Plus Gold to Platinum certifications.

Internet of Things is gaining a lot of momentum at the moment and in short, these are smart devices that lets you control their actions from anywhere through remote connections. This is also the case for CRYORIGS new Pi power supply that will allow you to wake or shut your system down remotely thanks to the patent pending Zero Hassle Hardware Wake (ZHH Wake) technology that directly controls your motherboard.

Forgot to shut down your system before you left home, do it from anywhere. Need to boot up your extra file server and access some data from a remote location, no problem. Read in the news that a thunderstorm is closing on your home, shut down the system until it has passed. There are a lot of possibilities with this technology.

From this base CRYORIG’s Pi line can extend further capabilities such as fan speed control, energy usage recording and management, electric bill estimations as well as PSU health and deterioration reporting all directly to a mobile phone app.

This is a pretty cool and innovative idea, let us just hope that it will actually result in a final product and not end up never being released such as Captherms Multiphase cooler we saw at CES two years in a row – but never any actual product.

G.Skill Branches out and Showcase Ripjaws Power Supply

It looks like G.Skill wasn’t happy with just manufacturing great memory modules as they’re branching out into new areas. One of them is the power supply area and their first play looks quite impressive.

The new PSUs are dubbed Ripjaws just as the memory modules and you can expect the same kind of quality here. It starts out with the PS750G and the PS850G that both come with 80 Plus Gold certification and an efficiency rating of 90%. The two PSUs come with 750W and 850W respective and are fully modular units.

The PS850P and PS1250P are even better and they got an even higher efficiency rating. These two power supply units come with 80 Plus Platinum rating and an efficiency rating of 92%. Just as the two Gold models, these are also fully modular.

All Ripjaws series PSUs are made from with high-quality materials, such as 100% Japanese-made capacitors that ensure a high reliability and longer lasting lifetime.

The units are cooled by the unique automated G.SKILL ECO Optimized (GEO) Thermal Fan Control that also provides zero fan noise during low load operations. The used 140mm fans also use durable double ball bearings. Built-in protections include OVP, UVP, OCP, OPP, SCP, and OTP.

G.Skill did not announce a time of availability nor a price yet, but we will keep you updated with this information as they become available.

Introduction & Packaging

be quiet! are regarded as one of the best brands in the business, from their high-end CPU coolers, system fans and of course their power supplies, many of which are regarded as some of the coolest, quietest and best make products available today. Obviously, the quiet part is a given, with a name like be quiet!, if they made noisy products, it would be quite a disappointment. To achieve quiet performance, be quiet! uses high-quality components, premium grade build quality and design, so it’s no surprise that they’ve won many awards in the past; will we see a repeat performance today?

The Dark Power Pro 11 is the latest entry in their popular Dark Power Pro series. There are a few notable features to this power supply that make it stand out from the competition. First we’ve got the new SilentWings 3 135mm fan which features the new 6-pole motor, a redesigned bearing, the lowest startup rotational speed in the market (under 250FPM) and more; promising virtually inaudible performance and improved cooling. Of course, power delivery is improved too, with high-quality PFC capacitors, higher efficiency, improved voltage stability, regulation and more!

Packaging and Contents

As you can see, the be quiet! Dark Power Pro 11 comes in the usual packaging design of any other be quiet! product. Down the left side of the box, it’s marked “high-end”, although the words “80 Plus Platinum” and “1200w” are also strong indicators that this is a high-end/enthusiast focused product.

The Dark Power Pro 11 is semi-modular and comes with a hard-wired 24-pin, not big deal since literally all systems will need this cable and making it modular would only add to the cost. There are two CPU power cables, an 8-pin and a 4+4, Four SATA/Molex cables with FDD options. One of the more important cables, there are four PCIe cables, three with dual 6+2 connectors and a single 6pin PCIe cable. Finally, you’ll also find external fan connector cables, more on those in a moment, and the Overclocking Key add-on.

In the box, we found two power cables, one for EU and one for UK, although we expect this will differ based on region.

Included extras from left to right, are the fan adaptor cables, OC jumper, Overclocking Key switch, screws, cable ties, thumb screws and two Velcro cable ties.

Sharkoon Announces Two New SFX PSUs With 80 Plus Rating

When you build a small form factor system then you’ll also need a small power supply and it’s great to see more feature rich PSUs arrive. Today it is Sharkoon that introduced two new SFX PSUs with 80 Plus rating and even include an ATX mounting frame for cases that don’t support these smaller PSUs. The two new units are the SilentStorm SFX Gold 500W and the SilentStorm SFX Bronze 350W, and the names kind off give away their specifications.

The SilentStorm SFX Gold 500W comes with an 80 PLUS Gold certification, a thing that’s not that common yet in the SFX form factor. Compact systems need effective and efficient power too, so this is great to see. The unit offers an outstanding efficiency of over 90 percent at 50 percent load and meets the strict requirements of the independent 80 PLUS Initiative.

The SilentStorm SFX Gold 500 PSU is a fully modular unit, allowing you to have an even better setup in your tiny case. You still get two 6+2 pin PCIe connectors, four SATA, two Molex and one Berg connector next to the obligatory CPU and motherboard connectors.

The quiet 120mm fan should reduce the noise output significantly over cheaper units while still keeping it all cool. It is compatible with Intel Haswell CPUs and backed by a three-year warranty. The suggested retail price is €79.90.

The second new unit isn’t quite as powerful, but it also costs about half of the Gold certified. The SilentStorm SFX Bronze can provide your system with 350W or 450W of power depending on version. It is only 80 Plus Bronze certified, but that isn’t without either. The unit offers over 85 percent efficiency at 50% load and meets the strict requirements of the independent 80 PLUS Initiative.

This unit only has one 6-pin PCIe connector, two SATA, two Molex and one Berg connectors next to the CPU and mainboard connectors. The 450W model comes with one more SATA connector and a 6+2 pin PCIe connector. The unit is kept cool by an 80mm fan and come backed by a three-year warranty.

The Sharkoon SilentStorm SFX Bronze series is available starting at a suggested retail price of €49.99.

The power supplies also feature over power, over voltage, under voltage as well as short circuit protection to keep all your components as safe as possible.
