Kingston Releases Micro-SD Card Designed for Action Cameras

There are plenty of memory cards on the market, but it aren’t all of them that are equally suited for all tasks – much in the same way as it is with any other kind of storage product. Kingston just released a new micro SD Card specifically designed for use with action cameras and that comes with UHS-I U3 Speed Class 3 ratings. The new Kingston SDCAC microSD Action Camera UHS-I U3 memory card comes in various sizes from 16GB and up to 64GB.

The cards feature speeds of up to 90MB/s when reading and up to 45MB/s when writing. While that doesn’t sound like much when we compare it to SSD performance, it is quite nice for a card of this size. And we also have to keep in mind that these are minimum speed ratings and not possible maximum speeds.

The sustained performance allows outdoor enthusiasts to shoot in 4K resolutions without missing a single frame and even shoot up to 240 frames per second on normal Full-HD recordings. With a capacity availability from 16GB to 64GB, there should be a right card for everyone. The 16GB and 32GB capacities are shipping this month while the larger 64GB ships next month.

The cards can perform in any environment as they are waterproof, shockproof, X-ray proof, and temperature proof. Pretty much just proofed. The card is available in two version, with and without an SD card adapter that lets users quickly and easily view footage on a PC, notebook, or media reader.

We can see a few more details we can see a few more details of the memory card on the rear of the package, provided in several languages. The compatible operating systems for the MediaRecovery software are also covered here.

The inside leaflet folds out but doesn’t hold much more information. Other than that, we only find the memory card in its protective casing inside the blister pack.

Silicon Power Releases Impressive Superior CF 1100X

Silicon Power released a new memory card for professional video and photographers, the new Superior CF 1100X. I’ve had the pleasure to play around with some fast memory cards over the time, but I’ve personally not had anything better than 600x speed which makes 1100x quite impressive.

Adam Elements USB 3.1 ROMA Brings Style to the Flash Drive

The USB 3.1 standard has been among us for some time now, but there aren’t many drives on the market that support this new standard yet. Lately more and more drives are being released, but they mostly just feature the new connectors and no real performance improvement considering the bus is capable of 10Gbps. That is no different with this new drive from Adam Elements and called ROMA, but it’s still something a little special. The clothing one wears don’t define you, but it can’t hurt to look good and the same goes for the Adam Elements USB 3.1 ROMA flash drive.

The ROMA drives match the Mac Book series perfectly with their Gold and Space Grey colours, and that is no real surprise as Adam Elements was founded in 2013 by Alan Cheng who previously worked for Apple Taiwan as a Senior Manager. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t use the drives in any other system with the appropriate ports.

The ROMA features both a USB 3.1 Type C and a normal USB 3.1 Type-A connector for maximum compatibility to modern laptops, smartphones, and other USB 3.1 capable devices. You get 64GB storage when your purchase an ROMA and that’s not bad at all. It should be plenty for most people needs and enough to unload your smartphone data onto the drive.

ROMA’s USB-C plug works either way up, so users will never need that cursed 3-turn USB move again. Whenever data needs to be moved to another computer with a standard USB socket only, the connector can simply be swivelled around, and a full-sized USB 3.1 plug is ready to go. On both ends, ROMA boasts high-end transfer speeds of up to 130 MB/s, but whether that’s just read or also goes for write is anyone’s guess. My guess is that it only goes for the read speeds and that you shouldn’t expect much in terms of write performance.

The drive’s casing is forged from premium zinc-aluminium alloy which makes it shock-resistant and dustproof. In order to make transport easier and add to the design, ROMA comes with a brown handmade genuine leather strap which fastens neatly onto bags and clothes.

ROMA can be ordered directly from the Taiwan-based Adam Store and will also become available at European retailers shortly. The MSRP is set to £39.99 which isn’t bad at all for a stylish drive like this with 64GB capacity.

ADATA Launches the ICFS332 CFast Card with SLC and 560MB/s Throughput

Industrial grade products gain their name because they are able to work in much harsher environments than ordinary parts and that is no different when it comes to storage. AData just released a new ICFS332 industrial grade CFast card for that delivers SSD performance and reliability in a very compact form factor.

The ICFS332 CFast card utilizes the SATA3 interface to deliver speeds up to 560MB/s while reading and impressive 400MB/s when writing. The ICFS332 uses SLC NAND that also provides the best reliability, also visible in the 2 million hour mean time before failure rating.

As previously mentioned, industrial applications are run in environments that are a lot harsher, which isn’t a problem for the Adata ICFS332 CFast card that can operate in temperatures between minus 40 degrees and plus 90 degrees Celcius. The cards allow for long-term deployment in these conditions, making the optimal system drives here.

The AData ICFS332 is available in 4GB to 64GB capacities and employs a full range of technologies including ECC and S.M.A.R.T. for high-reliability data transfer and improved security, but also more advanced wear leveling technology to extend the longevity. Patriot Release Viper Elite DDR4 Memory up to 3200MHz

DDR4 memory started out for some consumers with the Intel X99 chipset, but it wasn’t until the new Intel 100 series chipsets and mainly the Z170, hit the market that DDR4 memory made its big entry in the consumer market. Since then, manufacturers of memory modules have been battling to have the best modules for this platform and it is no different at Patriot Memory. We’ve already seen the Viper DDR4 modules and now they just announced the Viper Elite DDR4 modules for the Intel 100 series platforms and with speeds up to 3200MHz.

The new Patriot Viper Elite series is available in red, blue and grey. It comes in two module 16GB and 8GB Kits as well as a 64GB kit consisting of four 16GB modules. There is also a grey only 64 and 32GB kit with 16GB modules. The power consumption is between 1.2 and 1.35 volts depending on which models you pick. The series is available from 2400MHz and all the way up to 3200MHz.

All modules are hand tested for quality assurance and the Viper Elite series is backed by a lifetime warranty.

Kingston HyperX Launches Savage Series USB 3.1 Flash Drive


Kingston’s high-end gaming division HyperX launched a new USB thumb drive to replace the popular DataTraveler HyperX drive. The new flash drive to replace it is called the HyperX Savage and continues the performance scheme that we have come to love from the HyperX series.

The new HyperX Savage comes in three capacity version: 64GB, 128GB, and a mighty 256GB version. As it always is with thumb drives, capacity has an impact on performance and the larger drives are faster. The 64GB version is rated for a performance of up to 350MB/s reading and 180MB/s writing while the larger 128GB and 256GB models can write with up to 250MB/s. That’s quite impressive for a USB flash drive.

The new drive is USB 3.1 Gen 1 compliant to suit the newest notebook standards as well as any other USB capable device such as smart TVs and consoles. The relative slim design should prevent too much interference and blocking around the USB port it has been plugged into, which is a big bonus.

HyperX Releases High-Capacity DDR4 Kit Additions

If you are one of them who can’t get enough memory in their system, then you are in luck as HyperX added new high-capacity kits to both their HyperX Savage and HyperX Predator DDR4 memory series. The modules look sweet and bring impressive speeds, capacities, and timings for both X99 and Intel 100 series chipset users.

The Kingston HyperX Savage DDR4 memory is now available as a 2666MHz 128GB kit containing eight modules with a massive 16GB of RAM each. This new kit joins a family of the previously announced Savage DDR4 memory from 2133MHz to 3000MHz in various single modules and kits ranging from 4GB to 64GB capacities. While these new modules don’t get all the way to 3000MHz, they’re still very impressive with their 2666MHz and 15-16-16 timings.

The HyperX Predator DDR4 series is now available in 16GB DIMMs, meaning you can get 32GB kits of two modules and 64GB kits of four modules, all the way up to 3000MHz. G.SKILL Announces Ripjaws DDR4 SO-DIMM

G.Skill announces the newest addition to their DDR4 RipJaws lineup with the DDR4 SO-DIMM Ripjaw series. The new modules come with great speeds of up to 2800MHz and in kit sizes up to 64GB. As all RipJaw memory modules, the new SO-DIMM series is also built with specially screened components, hand-picked from G.SKILL’s rigorous and highly selective binning process and tested to guaranteed maximum performance and reliability.

SO-DIMM modules are generally used in portable and small form factor system where power consumption is an issue, and DDR4 is a great thing for these systems. With the lower power consumption over DDR3 modules where they only consume 1.2V make them optimal for this scenario. The modules also feature auto-overclocking where the modules will be automatically overclocked when the memory modules are installed on qualified systems.

There are four different speeds in the new G.Skill RipJaws series and each speed is available in five different capacity kit sizes. With the increase in the kit speeds from 2133 to 2800MHz, the timings also change slightly as we can see in the chart below. Apacer Reveals Pricing on 3000MHz NOX DDR4 Laptop Memory

Apacer promised to release the final pricing for their new NOX DDR4 memory when we could report about it a little while ago and they’ve kept that promise. Apacer’s NOX DDR4 SO-DIMMs are quite impressive on several fronts and they could quite easily be described as the most advanced laptop memory to date.

With 64GB capacity and up to 3000MHz, we can imagine that these modules aren’t going to be cheap, but it is probably not as bad as you might have imagined. For $299, the 3000MHz version can be yours. The slower modules in the same series are a little cheaper and the 2800MHz SO-DIMMs can be yours for $239, 2666MHz for $219, and 2400MHz for $139. Availability for all four types is set for the end of November, so you might have to pack a little more patience before you can upgrade your mobile gaming station with these modules.

The label on the front isn’t just decoration, it is manufactured in detail by Z511 Lab team and it is able to stand 120°C heat with metalloid material. The well-developed front label helps the system stay within thermal limits during the regular use, and even during those marathon gaming sessions. This allows NOX to provide its highest performance possible under narrow and hot environment within the laptop. The low power consumption of just 1.2V is another thing that laptop users will benefit from, extending your battery time.

BOXX Introduces the World’s Smallest Overclocked Workstation

When we think small and compact systems, we usually think in the direction of HTPCs or low-powered LAN rigs, but there are a lot more possibilities with today’s hardware and BOXX proves that with their impressive new and very compact workstation dubbed the APEXX 1.

The APEXX 1 is the smallest workstation coming from BOXX and it packs quite an impressive punch for its tiny measurements. It is less than 5 inches wide, 8.5 inches tall, and 9 inches deep, which has been achieved thanks to the in-house developed and built chassis.

There are two new models available in the APEXX series, the first is i7 based and the second is Xeon based. The i7 systems features an 8-core CPU overclocked to 4GHz and up to 32GB DDR4 memory while the Xeon E5 model comes with up to 18 cores and up to 64GB DDR4 memory. Overclocked Skylake models will be available at the end of the month too.

When it comes to the graphics card used, you got the choice between both of the two rivals in the workstation market. Whether you need an NVIDIA Quadro or an AMD FirePro graphics card, you can get both.

The system is using a duality of liquid cooling as well as a blower fan to provide optimal cooling for the entire system. An important aspect in such a tiny system and especially considering the power that these systems pack. The closed-loop AIO cooler is maintenance free as we’re used to and the system doesn’t require any more than a little de-dusting now and then.

Storage wise you can get the best of the best too. You can go with an optional M.2 PCI-Express NVMe drive or use the two dual 2.5-inch bays for more traditional SATA3 drives such as SSDs and HDDs. Although I don’t know who would put a mechanical drive in a beautiful and modern system like this.

There are plenty of USB 3.0 and USB 3.1 ports available so you can attach all the external storage that you want. It also features eSATA, USB 2.0, and a dual PS2 connector. Gigabit Ethernet is also present and so is a 7.1 channel sound card with S/PDIF Out. The PSU is external and is among the reasons why this system can be so tiny despite its power.

If one system shouldn’t be enough for your workplace or you need extra rendering power, then you can easily stack these system thanks to the four bumpers available when placed on its side. The upcoming renderPRO 1 can also be stacked right on top and it fits like a glove.

The system comes with either Windows or Linux and it is backed by a 3-year warranty, one year of 24/7 phone support and next business day onsite service for US and Canadian customers. The price will depend on your configuration and model of the APEXX 1, but I have no doubt that it will be worth it.

Apacer Releases 64GB 3000MHz NOX DDR4 SO-DIMM

The times where the best hardware was limited to desktop PCs is long over and we can get all that power in portable units today too, may it be high-end i7 CPUs or multiple graphics card solutions. All this raw power also needs some memory and Apacer’s latest offering might come in handy here. The newly released Apacer NOX DDR4 modules take all that goodness and brings it down to the smaller SO-DIMM form factor.

The new Apacer NOX DDR4 SO-DIMMs are available with an impressive capacity of 64GB and speeds of up to 3000MHz while only consuming 1.2V. This is so far the most impressive and highest capacity SO-DIMM on the market. The NOX DDR4 SO-DIMM series also comes in slower speeds for those who don’t need as much. Other options include 2400, 2666, and 2800MHz.

The modules have all undergone strict testing and have been built with handpicked DRAM IC to create the best possible product. Apacer did not reveal the pricing at this point, but that will follow at the end of this month. Whether the availability will be at the same time is anyone’s guess. We will just have to wait and see. Either way, this is a seriously impressive memory module.

Super Talent Announces 64GB DDR4 LRDIMM Modules

Super Talent announced a double up on their DDR4 LRDIMM modules with the new 64GB capacity modules (F21LQ64GS), double the capacity of the previous 32GB modules. Super Talent’s quad rank 64GB DDR4 load reduced DIMM modules are targeted at server environments which allow more DIMMs per channel to be used in order to take advantage of an increased memory capacity. A buffer chip replaces the register on these modules, in order to help minimize the loading on a system and increase the speeds.

You’ll need a Haswell-EP platform to take advantage of these modules that run at a speed of 2133MHz and come with CL15 ratings. As these are PC4-17000 DDR4 modules, they’ll only consume 1.2V and are of course ECC modules. There’s no need for fancy heat spreaders with a lot of colours and hip design on such modules, and you won’t find that either. They’re plain as they should be.

LRDIMM can be a big advantage as the amount of DIMMs per channel increase. LRDIMMs offer lower latencies and are able to run at higher speeds. At three DIMMs per channel, the bandwidth speed gap is increased while latency tax from increasing the DPC has been reduced. All modules are quality tested in-house and are built to JEDEC standard specifications. The DRAM vendor can variate, but it can be determined by the last Character X of the Part number.

Team Group Introduced the Team MiDRIVE for MacBooks

One of the downsides on MacBooks is the limited internal storage and no way to really upgrade it on the fly. Team Group has now created the Team MiDrive for just that and it plugs neatly into the side of your MacBook.

The Team MiDrive makes use of a UHS-1 high-speed memory card and comes as either 64GB or 128GB versions out of the box. With the expandable design and through the help of the high-speed memory card, MiDRIVE is able to take a step further to improve the storage capacity and the file management efficiency. Continuing Mac’s exquisite minimalist design and also satisfying users’ needs for both practical and personal style, the exterior features an ultra slim and short design with classic black and white pattern.

The included Team UHS-1 memory card can read with up to 60MB/s and write with up to 20MB/s. That’s no groundbreaking speed, but it’s not that bad either. It surely isn’t a replacement for USB 3.0 drives and their speed, but it has the benefit of sliding into the laptop instead of sticking out like a flash drive does.

Team Group did not reveal any pricing or availability in their announcement, but the new Team MiDrive with 64GB and 128GB should be available shortly.

Patriot Releases EP Pro microSDHC/SDXC 4K Capable Card

We see more and more devices each day capable of dealing with 4K resolution. More pixels means more storage and more bandwidth is needed and Patriot is ready with a new memory card for just this.

The new Patriot EP Pro microSDXC is a Class 10, UHS-I U3 card capable of a performance up to 95MB/s while reading and 80MB/s while writing.

This is plenty of speed for 4K video recording and thereby also HD and UHD resolutions, but it is equally great for continuous and burst image capturing with your high-end cameras. Action junkies tend to love to record their daring activities and the Patriot EP Pro is just as suited for use in Action-Cameras as it is in smartphones and tablets.

The EP Pro will be available in both 32GB (SDHC) and 64GB (SDXC) capacities so you don’t have to miss a moment and can capture new ones in the blink of an eye and store within seconds due to the EP Pro’s record response time. Users can also share their images and videos without delay by transferring stored data to their desktop, tablet or 4K TV and experience the record write speeds of the EP Pro microSDXC.

The new EP Pro microSDXC card should become available in July of 2015. Sadly no word on pricing yet besides the mentioning of ‘affordable’.

Patriot Memory Develops Type-C USB Flash Drive

Patriot Memory already has some great flash drives in their line-up, and the SuperSonic USB 3.0 drives is just one example on that. Now they’re almost ready with their newest flash drive and this time it’s a USB 3.1 enabled drive. The new drive doesn’t have a name yet besides ‘Type-C USB Flash Drive for MacBook users’, so that will be a surprise for later.

The new Apple MacBook is using the Type-C connector, but it’s not alone on that front. Google’s Chromebook Pixel and other Type-C equipped notebooks are on their way and I hope this standard will pick up faster than the USB 3.0 did after its release.

“As many MacBook users rely heavily on external storage options, we wanted to be at the forefront with a product that will cater to these consumers,” said Meng J. Choo, Patriot’s Product Manager. “As a leading manufacturer of USB and flash memory, we want to offer solutions for our customers that are easy-to-use and provide seamless experiences across all their devices.”

Having a flash drive that just fits new systems wouldn’t be practical, so Patriot Memory made it a dual drive that also comes with a normal Type-A USB 3.0 connector. No compatibility issues here, you can use the drive in any USB-enabled system from version 1.0 to 3.1.

The new flash drive is expected to be available to consumers starting in June in both a 32GB and a 64GB version.

PNY Releases 2-in-1 Duo-Link OU4 Flash drive with OTG and USB 3.0

Getting files from your smartphone or tablet and over on a flash drive can be a real hassle and for most parts it requires the use of a system in the middle where you can connect both devices. That is unless you have an OTG enabled device, then it gets a lot easier as you can just plug an OTG compatible flash drive directly into your device and use it as if it was the internal memory or a card.

PNY has announced such a new flash drive and it comes with both a microUSB connector for your smart device and a USB 3.0 connector for your PC. The new PNY Duo-Link OU4 OTG USB 3.0 can achieve speeds up to 120MB/s while reading and still manage 20MB/s at writing, allowing you to transfer those files in a speedy fashion.

The drive only weighs about 2.8 grams and measures 29.05 x 15.1 x 10.25 mm and it will be available in capacities ranging from 8GB to 64GB. It is compatible with Android 4.0 and newer devices with an OTG enabled chipset and port, and it should work equally well on all normal USB devices such as Windows, Linux, or MacOS systems.

The fourth generation Duo-Link OU drive is backed by a two-year warranty from the date of purchase and we can expect a similar price to the current third generation. No word on when it will be available, but it should be shortly.

Today we will be looking at the Boston Venom 3401-7T, which is one of their flagship models of their Venom series, which has been designed for high-performance graphics, parallel processing and high-speed rendering. With this being one of our first enterprise workstation reviews we have a fresh selection of benchmarks which will help us push these high specification systems to their limits. We have a wide range including CPU, GPU, Memory and storage benchmarks which will help us collect some statistics which will help us find the cream of the crop of workstation rigs and at the same time provide our audience with informative concise results.

The addition of MediaRECOVER software also lets you recover deleted files and restore corrupt files, if that ever should needed.

The Media reader comes with a two-year warranty while the CF Ultimate 600x memory card comes with Kingston’s great lifetime warranty. No word on pricing or availability yet, but it should be soon. I found one Italian shop with the Media reader listed for €28, but not in stock.

Toshiba TransMemory EX II 64GB USB 3.0 Encrypted Flash Drive Review

Introduction


Toshiba has a lot of experience in the storage area and it’s a pleasure to take a closer look at their TransMemory EX II 64GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive today, a fast and secure pocket drive.

This tiny flash drive doesn’t just promise us great speeds over 200MB/s at both writing and reading, it also supports Windows ReadyBoost and comes with Toshiba’s Pad Locker software to encrypt and password protect your drive.

The fast USB 3.0 Super Speed allows you to transfer 25GB of video content in less than 4 minutes, that’s about the size of an average Blueray movie. Not bad.

Windows ReadyBoost allows external memory storage to be used as a cache for the hard disk drive of a PC. Windows ReadyBoost capability contributes to enhanced PC performance, such as reduced time required for PC start-up – another way of improving older hard drive setups.

One of the things that sets this flash drive apart from the rest is the Pad Locker software. Not only does it allow you to create a password protected and encrypted drive, it allows you to set the amount you want to encrypt. You could do half and half or whatever ratio you have a need for and how many files of yours actually need to be protected to that degree.

Pad Locker also allows you to format the drive as FAT32, even for models above 64GB and it can handle multiple devices on the same computer at once; a great little piece of software.

The TransMemory EX II is backed by a five-year warranty from the date of purchase.

Microsoft Planning to Build an Intel-Powered Non-Pro Surface Tablet

Microsoft seems to be moving away from the ARM-powered Surface tablets and getting rid of its Windows RT operating system in the process. A report from WinBeta indicates that the company is planning to switch the Surface Pro series to the x86-powered CPU running on Windows 8.1 (and possibly Windows 10 once it gets released).

The report states that the new Surface will be a fanless device, powered by an Atom or Core M processor, and will be marketed as a consumer-oriented product. This might mean that the company would slot it beneath the Surface Pro 3, but it’s hard to say at this point given that details about it are still scarce.

The company’s non-Pro Surface tablet, the Surface 2, comes with a 10.6″ 1080p screen, up to 64GB of storage and with the Windows RT OS. A similar device with the Windows 8.1 (and Windows 10 in the future) could be a great consumer product, given the price is right. The Surface 2 is currently priced at $449 for the 32GB variant.

An official announcement is expected before or at Microsoft’s Build conference, which starts on April 29th.

The DataTraveler 4000 Gen. 2 and DataTraveler 4000 Gen. 2 Management Ready protect sensitive information with hardware-based 256-bit AES encryption and titanium coated stainless steel casing.
