WD Announced 7th Generation My Passport Portable Drives

WD took their highly successful My Passport portable hard drive for a redesign and overhauled the features to bring out the new My Passport Ultra portable hard drive and My Passport for Mac drives.

This is now the 7th generation of My Passport drives and they are now available with a capacity all the way up to 3TB while still maintaining the compact form factor and light weight.

Style is a matter of personal taste, so it is perfect that WD released the drive in four colours: Classic Black, Brilliant White, Wild Berry, and Noble Blue. My Passport Ultra also comes with built-in WD Backup software for easy backup of critical data.

Along with the new drives, WD also introduces a new optional accessory called the WD Grip Pack.  It is a soft band that will be available in a variety of colours for extra style and protection: smoke, slate, grape, sky and fuchsia. A matching USB cable is also included.

3TB capacity might be too much for you, so the drive will be available in other capacities too. 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB version are available too. Features include 256-bit AES hardware encryption and USB 3.0 connectivity. Mac users seem to want more space than the average other user and the WD My Passport for Mac won’t be available as 500GB model.

My Passport Ultra and My Passport for Mac have a Manufacturer’s Suggest Retail Price (MSRP) ranging from $79.99 up to $199.99 depending on capacity. The 3 TB capacity will be available next month. Both versions come with a 3-year limited warranty. The WD Grip Pack will be available in June and for an MSRP of $12.99.

Fixstars Launches First 3TB 2.5-Inch SSD

Fixstars Solutions announced the start of sales for 3TB SSD (SSD-3000M) and 1TB SSD (SSD-1000M), but sadly only in North America this time; the drives were already released in Japan last November.

The 3TB SSD-3000M has the world’s highest capacity for 2.5-inch SATA drives which can reduced the amount of drives needed significantly. These new disks integrate Fixstars’ proprietary NAND controller preventing latency spikes and performance deterioration to ensure a consistent high performance. Applications for which fast and stable disk writes are crucial such as 4K video recording/editing and encrypted storage for film will benefit the most from Fixstars solid state disks.

“The SSD-3000M/1000M were released in Japan last November, and have been getting great feedbacks from our customers,” said Satoshi Miki, CEO & Co-Founder of Fixstars Corporation (Tokyo), “As an innovator of storage solutions, we are focused on providing high performance and reliability SSD solutions, to accelerate our customer’s business.”

Fixstars used flash originally designed for the use in small-scale mobile devices in these drives, allowing them to fit so much into such a little space. The drives can still provide impressive sequential speeds up to 520MB/s reading and up to 500MB/s writing. They are based on 19nm MLC NAND and support TRIM, Advanced Garbage Collection, and SMART.

A drive like this won’t be cheap and the Fixstars order quote page lists the drive at $990 plus tax for the 1TB model. If this shouldn’t be enough, Fixstars are planning to launch a 5TB version before Q1 2015 is over.

Synology Releases BeyondCloud Pre-Setup NAS Units

It isn’t everyone that is equally skilled when it comes to configuring devices, and there also are the people that just don’t want to bother with it. For just those, and everyone else for that matter, Synology created the BeyondCloud NAS devices that come with preinstalled hard drives and features so you can start playing, collaborating, and achieving right away.

The BeyondCloud systems are pre-installed and storage is already allocated, so users can access their own private cloud almost immediately. In addition, the bundles can cost less than the DiskStations and disks purchased separately. Single disk packages are available in 2TB and 3TB configurations, and two-disk packages are available with two 3TB disks in a mirror configuration.

“We are extremely excited to be offering the BeyondCloud package,” said Jason Bonoan, Product Marketing Manager at Synology America Corp.  “Synology is well known for our award-winning DiskStation Manager and its feature set.  With this bundled package, users can quickly take advantage of this, and go beyond traditional public cloud solutions; providing the best value for the tech-savvy user.”

At the base of everything, is of course the DSM operating system from Synology, but it has a lot of features pre-installed and setup such as multimedia packages. Everything can be then be accessed the conventional way or through the iOS, Android, and Windows Phone apps. Cloud and Note stations are also setup, so you can start working on those creative projects and ideas right away.

The Synology BeyondCloud units are US only for the moment, but they might make it to other markets at a later time. Availability is set to mid-January to mid first-quarter.

Toshiba Presents Two New 3TB Portable Hard Drives

Toshiba announced two new 3TB portable hard drives where one is an addition to the Canvio Basics line and the other is the brand new Canvio Connect II portable hard drive. Both new hard drives take advantage of the new 3TB 2.5″ Toshiba HDDs that are built with four 750MB platters.

The Canvio Basics is a simple USB 3 portable hard drive without much to say, except that it is a lot of storage on a little form factor. The line of drives is highly popular due to the reliability, size and most of all, price.

The unveiled Canvio Connect II portable hard drive is a little more interesting and doesn’t just bring along 3TB of storage, but also remote access capabilities, local and cloud backup and the ability to share and stream content. The backup system isn’t just limited to files and folders either but can handle complete system backups as well. Users can further secure everything with a password and optionally upload it to the cloud. Everything can be scheduled so you can lean back and let the Connect II take care of the rest.

The Canvio Connect II comes with 10GB free cloud storage and is backed by a 2-year warranty. It will be available later this month in 500GB ($99.99), 1TB ($119.99) and 2TB ($199.99) versions while the 3TB model will release later this year.

Toshiba Announces First 3TB 2.5-Inch HDD

Toshiba announced the launch of a 3TB 2.5-inch hard disk drive (MQ03ABB300), the industry’s largest capacity to date in this form factor. Utilizing perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) technology, the new drive achieves 750GB per on each of the 4 platters. A drive perfect for situations where a lot of storage is needed, but the available space is limited.

The new drive doesn’t just impress with its capacity, it also consumes less power than the 2TB predecessor and is just as well suited for multi-drive home and SMB enclosures as laptops and notebooks. Sample shipments of the new MQ03ABB300 drive will begin in May.

Seagate Unveiled New Personal Cloud NAS

Seagate has unveiled their newest NAS-like devices designed specific for Personal Cloud storage and backups. The Seagate Personal Cloud devices will come as one or two bay devices, where the two bay automatically mirrors the data for additional safety.

The software system is the thing that once again sets a device like this apart from other network connected storage devices. It is built up from the ground up for just this one usage scenario instead of just having it as a side option. It isn’t everyone that likes to trust their data to a free or commercial cloud provider, but they might still like the benefits that cloud storage brings along: Having access to your files no matter where you are. And the Seagate Personal Cloud looks perfect here.

Seagate’s Personal Cloud devices come with apps for iOS and Android and work well with Windows, Mac and Linux systems alike. It can store all your backups and sync with USB drives while connecting to your network wirelessly. Most NAS devices can do this by now, but it’s rarely we’ve seen such a comprehensive device compatibility list.

  • TVs and Blu-ray players: LG Smart TVs (2012 or later) and Samsung Smart TVs and Blu-ray players (2012 models or later with SmartHub)
  • Streaming media players: Roku, Google Chromecast, and Apple TV (via Apple AirPlay)
  • Smartphones: iPhone, Android
  • Tablets: iPad, Android, Kindle, Windows 8/RT
  • DLNA Streaming, including PS3 and newer and Xbox360 and newer.

For those comfortable with the public cloud offerings, Seagate Personal Cloud offers sync options with Amazon S3, Box, Baidu, DropBox, Google Drive, HiDrive, and Yandex.Disk. The devices also feature an app-store like dashboard with a variety of apps including WordPress, BitTorrent Sync, and ElephantDrive.

If this still isn’t enough, Seagate created a software development kit (SDK) for its app manager to enable 3rd party developers to create new and exciting use cases for Personal Cloud drives.

The Seagate Personal Cloud devices will be shipping to retailers this month, so you don’t have to wait long in this is something for you. The one bay version will be available with 3TB for $169.99, 4TB for 219.99 and 5TB capacity for $249.99. The two bay version will be made available with 4TB for $299.99 and 6TB for $379.99. There is also an 8TB 2-bay version, but that one didn’t have a price sticker at the time of writing.

Seagate Announces Enterprise NAS HDDs up to 6TB

Seagate has just announced their new lineup of hard disk drives for Enterprise NAS environments. Where they’ve had the normal NAS series for a while, it’s now time to get the last gear in and bring out that extra performance needed on a bigger enterprise scale.

The new drives are optimized for up to 16 bays and come in up to 6TB capacity. The platter speed has gone up to 7200 RPM from the 5900 RPM in the consumer models. Seagate also offers these new drives as 2, 3, 4, and 5 TB models. But the 5 and 6TB are a first in this market segment as WD’s equivalent as RED Pro only go up to 4TB at the moment.

In the event of a failure, be it environmental, human error, or accident, the Enterprise NAS HDD is supported by Seagate’s optional Rescue Data Recovery plans, which provide end-to-end protection enabling industry-leading data recovery with more than a 90 percent success rate.

The new Seagate Enterprise NAS drives come with a 5-year warranty and have built-in RAID Rebuild technology for reduced downtime, Error Recovery Control for data accuracy and protection, and RV Sensor for detecting and compensating for vibrational disturbances.

Some shops already have the drives listed, but with 3-weeks or more on estimated arrival and with prices that seem very far fetched. Once an MSRP gets out, I’m sure the price will drop down to a normal level just as well as the mis-labeled current listing will be fixed. There seems to be a lot of mis-match between the Enterprise NAS and normal NAS models.
