Garry’s Mod to get Kinect support

What happens when you add PC Kinect support to renowned sandbox Source game Garry’s Mod? Happiness!

Support arrives this week or next according to Garry, and when it does, you’ll be able to assume direct control of the many Half-Life etc. characters/models in Garry’s Mod.

You could make them dance, you could make them swing things around, smashing the virtual place up. Or you could make them behave in a believable way with no need to animate, which also makes this quite exciting.

Luckily Garry Newman, maker of Garry’s Mod, videoed his many trial and error attempts at getting Kinect to work properly with his sandbox game.

Twitter to offer downloadable tweet history by 2013

Twitter’s CEO Dick Costolo has reiterated his promise that Twitter users will be able to download their entire Tweet archives by the end of 2012.

And once again, the engineers working on that project have (we imagine) sighed, rolled their eyes and shrugged at one another, privately expressing a wish that certain CEOs would stop making them look bad by promising the moon on a stick, which tech teams are unlikely to be able to deliver (we imagine).

Speaking at the University of Michigan, Costolo told students:

“By the end of the year – I’ve already promised this so the engineers, when I promised it publicly, they’re already mad at me so they can keep being mad at me. Now, again, once again, I caveat this with the engineers who are actually doing the work don’t necessarily agree that they’ll be done by the end of the year, but we’ll just keep having that argument and we’ll see where we end up year-end.”

So it doesn’t look hugely likely that the archive backup service will hit the web before Jan 1, but who knows what red hot pokers, carrots on sticks and cats o’ nine tails Twitter uses to eke code out of its engineers.

Android 4.2 updates fixes missing month December

Google has come up with a fix to add December to the Android 4.2 People app, with an OTA software update now rolling out.

December babies everywhere were outraged when it emerged that Google had forgotten to include their birth month in its People app in Jelly Bean.

This meant that Galaxy Nexus owning friends couldn’t add December birthdays to their calendar and were therefore liable to forget them altogether. As if it’s not hard enough sharing a birthday with Christmas.

Happily, the search giant has been working double time to sort this heinous oversight out and Google Nexus 4 and Nexus 10 owners have reported that the update has landed on their handsets.

No official word from Google on this yet so it’s not clear if all Nexus owners are currently in line for the over-the-air update or who’ll be next or what countries are being prioritised or anything.

iPad Mini 2 rumours already circulating

Though the iPad mini has been on sale for only a few days, rumours are already circulating about its replacement.

The story goes that the iPad mini 2 will have an even sharper display of 2,048 x 1,536 pixels packed into the same 7.9-inch space.

That is the same resolution as the grownup iPad 4 with Retina display, and the next mini should either have that Retina tech or something similar.

Since the mini is much smaller, it means even more pixels can be cramped into every inch; the mini 2 is said to have a crisp 324 ppi density.

Upping the screen resolution isn’t the most surprising upgrade for the potential iPad mini 2.

The biggest criticism of the current iPad mini so far is its 1,024 x 768 resolution. Critics wonder why a Retina display wasn’t incorporated into the first iPad mini to begin with.

Cynics will say Apple went with a lower resolution so it had some low hanging fruit to grab for the next upgrade. Production problems surrounding the iPad mini might also be the culprit.

Windows 8 App store finally reaches 20,000

Microsoft’s Windows Store now has over 20,000 apps available for download. This milestone was breached on Tuesday and propels the company towards its target of reaching 100,000 apps in 90 days from GA. However unless the trend takes off exponentially the target isn’t going to be reached. Please check out my “artist’s impression” of the Windows 8 apps quantity, linear flight path, below.

Windows app watching website WinAppUpdate has just tweeted that there are now 20,610 apps available in the Windows Store. The 20,000 app milestone was breached on Tuesday. By my rough calculations Tuesday was day 26 and on day 1 there were about 5,000 apps available in the Store. Simply plotting a straight line indicates that Microsoft and Windows 8 app developers really will have to step up their efforts to reach that 90 day 100k goal.

WinAppUpdate said that the proportion of free apps is very high; 17,958 of the 20,610 are free apps, that’s nearly 90 per cent. However if you go to the Windows Store now you will find that there are not over 20,000 apps to choose from; that’s because this is a global app figure. When we look at individual Stores the Canadians have the most apps available at 14,000, the US has 12,675 and here in the UK we have just 11,000 apps available to download.

Compare this progress to the Mac App store which had 10,000 apps in April 2012 after launching in January 2011 and Microsoft’s progress seems reasonable. Keith Lorizio, VP, Microsoft U.S. Sales & Marketing seems to have simply been a bit over optimistic with his projections last month.

Galaxy Note 2 sells over 5 Million units

The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 has sold more than 5 million units worldwide, selling 2 million in the last month.

At the beginning of this month, the Korean mobile maker announced the device had sold 3 million units. The Note 2 has been on sale for five months, and originally hit UK shelves on October 1. It only made its way stateside a month ago, which might well account for the recent sales spike.

This doesn’t mean 5 million people are using the Galaxy Note 2, though. Rather, Samsung is counting sales to retailers. In other words, more than 5 million devices have shipped to go on sale, with some of them sold, some of them still on the shelves. But still, it shows the demand is there.

While 5 million is impressive, it’s a fraction of the 30 million sales theGalaxy S3 has notched up. But then the S3 has been on sale longer, and has a smaller screen (4.8-inches to the Note 2’s 5.5-inches).

Indeed, many thought the original Note wouldn’t sell, being too big to be a phone, and too small to use as a tablet. Instead, it’s spearheaded a whole new category of device, known as the ‘phablet’. HTC is rumoured to be readying a UK equivalent of its 5-inch J Butterfly (as it’s known in Japan) and Droid DNA (as it’s called in the USA) to compete with the Note 2.

Xbox TV to come in 2013

Microsoft has been hard at work making the Xbox 360 more than just a gaming console, adding a host of video options and apps alongside features such as the new SmartGlass and a web browser. According to a report from The Verge, come next year the company will continue to push in that direction, except with a two-SKU strategy that will see the arrival of a lower-priced ‘Xbox TV’ for those interested only in streaming and casual titles, not the core gaming functions.

The device is expected to arrive ahead of the 2013 holiday shopping season alongside or shortly after the next-generation Xbox game console hit store shelves. Hardware specifications aren’t fully locked down at this point, but the report says it will use a chipset to enable an “always on” device that boots quickly to provide near-instant access to TV and entertainment services.

The device is said to run on the core components of Windows 8 — it’s unclear if that means Windows RT or a custom version to fit the form factor like it’s supposed to be the case with the rumored Xbox Surface tablet.

The so-called Xbox TV is said to be part of a broader effort to make the Xbox platform scalable enough to run on a number of devices. We’ve already head about a gaming oriented tablet, as mentioned above, while other ideas floating around include a phone capable of running a full version of Microsoft’s Xbox Live services, as well as providing some functionality to TV OEMs who would like to sell a licensed Xbox television set.

DICE says they don’t just want to do Battlefield, Mirrors Edge 2 confirmed

Swedish developer DICE doesn’t want to become the Battlefield factory, it’s insisted.

Ben Cousins, general manager of ngmoco Sweden and former executive producer of the Battlefield franchise, has tweeted to say Mirror’s Edge 2 is indeed in development.

Tweeting in response to this very story Cousins said: “It is general knowledge in the Stockholm dev scene that Mirror’s Edge 2 is in production at DICE.”

The last game it created that wasn’t Battlefield was 2008’s Mirror’s Edge, and DICE’s announced projects include Battlefield 4, Battlefield 3 DLC, ongoing support of Battlefield 3 itself and development of the Frostbite game engine.

But it’s also working on non-Battlefield projects, EA Games vice president Patrick Soderlund told OXM.

Soderlund was asked if it was hard to justify risks such as Mirror’s Edge while Battlefield continues to set tills alight. He replied:

“Well it depends, right? Maybe it is and maybe it isn’t. It’s also important for us – the DICE guys are roughly 300 people in the Stockholm studio; not all of them are working on Battlefield things, and that’s intentional, because we don’t want to become a Battlefield factory.

“The minute we start saying ‘you’re going to make a Battlefield game for the rest of your life’, they’re going to go some place else. So for them to make great Battlefield games there need to be other things for them to do as well. That’s why we have people who move around quite a bit. And then obviously we have a boatload of people that just want to make Battlefield because they love it.”

Solderlund added: “Same thing with the team in San Francisco that are making Dead Space. It’s a stunning team and they’re passionate about what they do, and they love making Dead Space. Then the answer’s ‘well, then make Dead Space’. Then we have to figure out how to sell it and make it successful.”

More iPhone 5S rumours for Spring 2013 launch

The iPhone 5S release date could be Spring 2013.

The Chinese-language Commercial Times estimates that full commercial production of the rumoured iPhone 5S will begin as early as Q1 2013, with the December run only expected to return between 50,000 and 100,000 units.

Such an early release of the iPhone 5S remains unlikely, however. The iPhone 5 has had barely enough time to gather dust on shop shelves, let alone pull in the masses of revenue Apple has still to make from it.

A Q1 2013 release of the 5S would also raise questions over Apple’s upgrade process.

But Digitimes reckons the iPhone 5S release date will be a little later, citing predicted sales targets of relevant component manufacturers. “Apple is expected to introduce its next-generation iPad and iPhone series around the middle of 2013… Component orders placed by Apple, which climbed to high levels prior to the iPhone 5 rollout, will rise again between March and April, the observers indicated.”

Some sources claim that Apple has is ploughing ahead with the next iteration of the popular handset, due to low yield rates of the iPhone 5 on the assembly line at Foxconn.

Apparently, because of the fragility of the parts used to make the device, many break before they even see the light of day.

Nevertheless, it’s more likely that the iPhone 5S will hit stores in the latter part of 2013, following the trend set by the iPhone 5 and 4S. It’s even possible that Apple will skip the iPhone 5S and hop right on to the iPhone 6.

EE might be supplying WiFi on the Tube

EE could be about to piggy back on London underground’s Wi-Fi network, which is controlled by Virgin Media.

A tweet apparently appeared on the official EE Twitter account, dropping a heavy hint that the 4G network was readying a deal in the new year, but it has since been deleted.

An EE spokesperson said: ” The tweet was posted in error, and was subsequently removed.

“We’re always looking at ways to improve the service we offer our customers. However, we have nothing to announce at this time.”

According to Pocket-Lint, the tweet read: “Travel on the tube? From early 2013, EE customers will be able to get WiFi access on the London Underground at no extra cost.

I’m sure we will hear more of this in time to come.

Firefox 17 gets integrated Facebook Messenger

Mozilla has released the latest Firefox update, version 17 by its count, which adds a new social API.

The social API allows for a persistent social sidebar that gives users direct access to chatting with their social networks while surfing the web.

As a partnership between Mozilla and Facebook, the first social feature for Firefox 17.0 is Facebook Messenger.

Turning the Facebook Messenger feature on opens up the Facebook chat sidebar on the right side of the browser along with notifications along the top for incoming comments, photo tags and other notifications.

While Facebook Messenger is the only social sidebar out for Firefox 17 right now, the social API will make it possible for other social networks to build their own similarly integrated tools.

Also new in Firefox 17 is the click-to-play blocklisting feature for plug-ins. With the feature, Firefox will no longer automatically run web content that uses a vulnerable or out-of-date plug-in.

Users can still manually select content to run using older plug-ins, or allow Firefox to try and install a newer version of the plug-in, but the key is that plug-ings need user permission to play.

The other big change in the new version of Firefox is that Mozilla has finally cut off support for Mac OS X 10.5. Safari dropped Leopard support last year, and Chrome followed suit a few weeks ago, making Opera the only major browser to still support the legacy Apple OS.

New Xbox shown in final issue of Xbox World

A couple of weeks ago we reported that PlayStation: The Official Magazine would see its last issue roll off the presses this holiday season. Publishing house Future wasn’t done there, however, as they also axed a few more gaming magazines in the process including British-based Xbox World and PSM3.

Not wanting to disappoint fans, the editor in chief of Xbox World decided to go out with a bang by releasing some new details about Microsoft’s upcoming Xbox 720. And by new details, we mean a full 8-page feature on the gaming console.

The magazine says that current developer kits have four hardware cores with each one being divided into four logical cores. The early systems also reportedly carry 8GB of RAM, the same capacity that Sony’s PlayStation 4 could end up with.

The final product is expected to ship with directional audio, Kinect 2.0, Blu-ray disc support, TV-in and –out, a new innovative gamepad and at some point, augmented reality complete with supporting glasses.

The publication doesn’t believe that Xbox 720 will be actual name of the console. Instead, they seem to think that simply “Xbox” will do. Either way, we should likely know the full details by the middle of next year at E3.

41 Comet stores to close by end of the Month

High street electronics retailer Comet has earmarked 41 locations for closure by the end of November, unless a buyer can be found for the troubled company.

The company, which currently has 236 stores around the UK, collapsed earlier this month with administrators Deloitte announcing closing down sales in order to move stock inventory.

“Regrettably… it is necessary to begin a store closure programme and an employee consultation process is under way,” Deloitte said in a statement

“While the administrators will look to redeploy staff from any stores which do face closure to other stores nearby, there will inevitably be redundancies.”

Unless a buyer comes in, the closures will result in the loss of a further 869 jobs.

On Monday the administrators announced that it would also be virtually ceasing Comet’s home delivery service, once current orders have been accounted for.

603 employees at the 12 hubs across the UK will lose their jobs, bringing the total job losses so far up to 2,000. The company has 6,500 employees in total.

According to the Telegraph, Deloitte is hoping that talks with potential outside buyers can save up to 50 of the locations, but it appears unlikely that the Comet brand name will live on

GTA V could still be coming to PC

Grand Theft Auto V, the expansive single-player, multi-character game due out next year, may find a parking spot outside its already confirmed consoles.

The Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 are the currently known homes for the Los Santos-set gameplay, but according to a recent report, PCs and the Nintendo Wii U could see GTA V’s characters come to life too.

“Everything else is up for consideration,” said Dan Houser, vice president of creativity for Rockstar Games and the company’s head writer, in an interview with IGN, answering an inquiry as to why other consoles aren’t confirmed for the game.

While that might not seem much to go on, Houser elaborated that unlike Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft, Rockstar is a third-party publisher and is free to pick its carrying partners.

The Wii U went on sale Sunday in the U.S. and is due out in the U.K. soon.

And while it’s not launching with many of the promised services it was supposed to, including Nintendo TVii, a GTA V/Rockstar partnership could see the Wii U’s sales overcome any initial bumps in the road.

Wii U goes on sale in the US

The long-awaited Nintendo Wii U console is now on sale in the United States, following a midnight launch on Sunday.

Crowds of eager gamers descended upon on the Nintendo World store in New York City, where Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Amie excitedly counted down to the launch.

The midnight launch at some stores angered GameStop customers who’d pre-ordered the device, only to realise that the chain would not be opening stores early.

Tight supplies of the console are already leading to sold-out signs appearing across the U.S, echoing the demand for the original Wii console back in 2007.

Forbes is reporting that over 2,500 consoles have already appeared on eBay and are selling for $500, (UK£314, AUD$483), which is up to 66 per cent higher than the base price for the 8GB console.

Although gamers in the US can now gleefully enjoy their next generation console, gamers in the UK, Europe and Australia will have to wait until November 30 to get their hands on the device.

Black Ops 2 is highest earning Call of Duty game ever

Black Ops 2 is the highest earning Call of Duty game in the space of 24 hours, Activision has announced. But actual sales figures weren’t revealed.

Black Ops 2, released Tuesday, earned anestimated $500 million worldwide in one day. Modern Warfare 3 made $400 million from 6.5 million day-one sales. Black Ops 1 made $360 from 5.6 million day-one sales.

Activision broke out sales for the previous two record-breaking Call of Duty launches, so why omit them for Black Ops 2? The logical conclusion is that Black Ops 2 didn’t sell more than 6.5 million copies.

Bobby Kotick’s press release comment said lifetime sales of the Call of Duty franchise now exceed the box office totals for Harry Potter and Star Wars, the two most successful film franchises ever.

New iMacs to be delayed due to manufacturing complications

According to a “commercial source”, the updated iMac may not hit shelves until early next year due to manufacturing complications related to the 5mm edge thickness of the mounted display/chassis — 80% thinner than previous generation models.

This reduction is partly achieved through a friction-stir welding process that uses heat and pressure to adjoin two aluminum surfaces, enabling seamless joints between chassis sections. MacBidouille notes that this method is used in other fields, such as the construction of aircraft wings, but apparently computer makers are less versed in the tech or the new iMacs are simply that complicated to build — or both.

It’s also believed that Apple’s manufacturers are having trouble with producing the iMac’s new displays. The screen is 45% thinner than what’s inside last year’s models and it uses a lamination process that eliminates the 2mm air gap between the panel and front glass. This approach increasingly common among smartphones and tablets, but it’s reportedly harder to accomplish with the iMac’s larger screens.

Apple has declined to comment on MacBidouille’s report and the company’s online store still shows the original launch dates of November and December for the 21.5- and 27-inch iMacs. In a less extreme prediction, a person familiar with the situation told CNET that the 21.5-inch would probably be delayed until next month, but that both models would still ship in time for the lucrative holiday shopping season.

Researchers boost WiFi hotspots by 700%

A team of researchers at NC State University believe they’ve found a way to greatly boost WiFi. Dubbed WiFox, their solution is purely software-based, meaning it could be rolled out to existing WiFi networks.

Specific details are still under wraps as they will be presented at the ACM CoNEXT conference in December. But essentially WiFox would run on a Wi-Fi access point as part of the firmware and kick in whenever it detects the access point is developing a backlog due to congestion, giving priority to certain transmissions depending on the size of the backlog. The press release likens the technique to a traffic policeman, allowing data to flow freely in one direction for a while and then reversing the flow, all in an optimal way to clear congestion.

The research team tested the program in their lab and found that improvements ranged from 400% with approximately 25 simultaneous Wi-Fi users to 700% with around 45 users sharing the same connection. According to their estimations, this translates to the Wi-Fi system being able to respond to user requests an average of four times faster than a Wi-Fi network that does not use WiFox.

It’s worth noting that the technology is not meant make existing Wi-Fi networks faster, only reduce slowdowns in congested hotspots. It’s unclear when or if WiFox will make it to public Wi-Fi networks across the world.

OnLive appears on Google TV’s via update

Owners of LG’s G2 Google TVs were treated to a surprise today, as cloud game streaming service OnLive arrived via a software update.

The app was originally announced for LG’s G2 series televisions back at June’s E3 conference, and now it appears the series is the first to receive the update.

OnLive allows users to stream console-quality games directly to their Smart TVs, which can then be played using an OnLive wireless controller. Other than the controller, OnLive requires no additional hardware. Games can also be taken on-the-go using compatible Android, PC and Mac devices.

Currently the OnLive app is only available on LG’s G2 series, with the company planning to pre-install the service on all future LG Google TVs. LG G2 Smart TV owners can access OnLive through the ‘Premium Apps’ area on their televisions.
