Campaign to save TVShack owner from extradition gets 160K signatures in 5 days

Home Secretary Theresa May is under increasing pressure to reverse her decision to extradite 24 year old student and TVShack.net foundr Richard O’Dwyer after a petition started by Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales receives more than 160,000 signatures in just five days.

The campaign, launched by Wales in conjunction with the Guardian newspaper on Monday, has been backed by celebrities and politicians including Labour Deputy Chair Tom Watson MP, Conservative MP Louise Mensch who referred to the extradition as “unconscionable”, and Liberal Democrat MP Mike Crockart.

Speaking when launching the campaign on Monday, Jimmy Wales said:

“Given the thin case against him [Richard], it is an outrage that he is being extradited to the US to face felony charges for something that he is not being prosecuted for here. No US citizen has ever been brought to the UK for alleged criminal activity that took place on US soil.”

Julia O’Dwyer, Richard’s mother, said:

“I’m blown away by the response to Jimmy’s petition. It’s been a tough year campaigning for my son but this outpouring of support from around the world has really made politicians sit up and take note of Richard’s case. Now it’s time for Theresa May to do the right thing by Richard.”

Graham Linehan writer of sitcoms The IT Crowd, Black Books and Father Ted, signed the petition, saying:

“It just seems to me that people like Richard are being punished for being able to navigate the modern world. The Internet has changed everything, they’re doing what comes naturally in these new uncharted waters and suddenly they’re getting their collars felt by people who still have Hotmail addresses.”

KFA2 GTX 680 EX OC 2GB Graphics Card Review

The Nvidia GeForce GTX 680 was one of the highlights in the industry this year, and simply stuck two fingers up at AMD when it came to the performance war, and ended up being dubbed as the most powerful single core graphics card in the world at the time of launch.

Since the launch, we’ve seen custom solutions coming from a variety of partners, including Asus, EVGA and MSI to name a few. Another brand who has suddenly leapt into the market is KFA2, who are a sub-brand for Galaxy, to appeal to the UK market, in a rather unique way.

The design behind KFA2 and their marketing is quite “hip” and “cool” to say the least, with hoodies and skulls being promoted across every aspects of their branding. This can appeal to a large market, and not just a niche as higher-end products generally are aimed at. KFA2 seem to take a unique spin on things by offering cards with factory overclocks and custom cooling solutions, and this all adds to the value behind their products.

Today sees us taking a look at one of their newest products; the GTX 680 EX OC, which comes fully equipped with a twin fan cooler design and a modest factory overclock, straight out of the box.

Before we get underway with the performance side of things, we will take a look at the packaging and bundle that KFA2 have on offer before taking a detailed look at the card itself, including its overclocked specifications.

Once we have this done and dusted, we can see how this compares to other cards on the market, including a reference design GTX 680 and some other more exotic cards that can match up to the unique features we have from KFA2.

Icy Dock Announces MB080U3S-1SB Blizzard Tool-Less HDD Enclosure

External enclosures are a great way to have high capacity data storage on the go. Data can also be a critical factor for users in the media business or who work with data centers. Some of the top tier hard drive companies have made their own all in one enclosure with hard drive included. However, one of the known major causes of hard drive failure is due to excessive heat buildup caused by a lack of a proper cooling system.

Also, a majority of hard drive manufactures only allow a 1 year warranty on their all in one external hard drives. This can be fatal for someone who has just lost their data and has to spend a significant amount of money in order to recover their data. There are other external enclosures in the market that provide a cooling system to help prevent this, but the physical placement of the cooling system does not always allow for the optimal airflow to cool the hard drive. Going above and beyond, the MB080U3S-1SB Blizzard is the next generation of external enclosures dedicated for maximum performance in cooling.

Elegantly Designed Hardware

The Blizzard has a uniquely designed front panel integrated with a massive 80mm fan for an elegant and nonintrusive design for the best ventilation, all in a single 3.5″ hard drive that is installed into the front of the enclosure. There are two important reasons for the particular fan placement and design. First, the MB080U3S-1SB will be able to cool all sides of the hard drive and create only one direction of airflow from the front to the back, where the air then exits. This extends the life of the cooling fan as it only intakes cool cold air and increases the overall cooling efficiency of the hard drive, in comparison to other enclosure cooling designs. Second, the 80mm fan is integrated into the detachable front panel which allows to easily swap your hard drive without any screws or tools to worry about. On the sides, includes two slightly concealed button ejectors that when pressed, will eject the front panel enabling the user to swap the hard drive as needed, similar to popular hard drive docking stations.

Smarter Cooling Functionality

The rear panel comprises of a multitude of defining features coming all together from only the best ideas of our previous external enclosure models. The enclosure has a single LED brightness dial to effortlessly adjust the ambient LED brightness to your preferred liking. To increase the level of functionality, the Blizzard’s LED color will turn red when the hard drive temperature is over 50°C. The built in fan controller allows you to select low, high, and auto to properly cool the hard drive to help if such a case appears. The auto mode properly adjusts accordingly to your hard drive’s requirements by increasing or decreasing the fan speed as needed.

Lighting Quick Speed

Taking advantage of the new ultra fast USB 3.0 interface, users will be able to transfer at high speeds at a maximum of 5 Gbps or perhaps use the similarly fast eSATA interface for system when there is a lack of USB 3.0. The USB 3.0 interface is also backwards compatible with USB 2.0 so using the MB080U3S-1SB on your legacy PC or Mac is not a problem. With tool-less drive installation, you can easily swap the drives in between systems. The Blizzard is perfect for users in the fields requiring the best cooling and performance on the market.

Key Features:

  • Unique & Elegant design.
  • Massive 80mm fan for optimal cooling.
  • Direct airflow design to completely cool all sides of the hard drive.
  • Completely screw-less / tool-less design for any 3.5″ SATA I/II/III HDD.
  • USB 3.0 & eSATA interface for the fastest connections anywhere.
  • Backward compatible with USB 2.0 for wide-ranging use.
  • 3 Speed Adjustable Cooling Fan, including auto setting featuring.
  • Smart Cooling technology. Smart Cooling Technology is active in auto mode and accurately adjusts the fan speed according to your hard drive’s needs.
  • Cool blue ambient LED with adjustable brightness control.
  • Smart-Temp functionality – Front LED changes from blue to red when over 50° C.
  • Supports SATA 6Gbit hard drive up to 3TB capacity.
  • Great for Media and IT Professionals.

OCZ Vertex 4 128GB Solid State Drive Review

When we look back at the performance that we have seen from OCZ’s solid state drives in the past, such as the Vertex 3 and the Vertex 3 Max IOPS, we have been highly impressed by their pure performance that they have on tap, as well as their quality components and the all so impressive Sandforce SF-2281 controller that we all know and love.

Moving forward from the success of the Vertex 3 and Max IOPS edition only means that we can get drives with more refined components and even still, more performance. This is where we find the Vertex 4 being the latest drive to be pumped out of the OCZ labs.

There are a few changes that we will go into more depth later on in the review, but major changes include the drop of the Sandforce controller and the integration of the Indilinx Everest 2 controller, making this the first in the Vertex lineup to feature a non-Sandforce controller. This integration of the new controller follows after OCZ’s acquisition of Indilinx earlier last year and what we’ve seen from other cheaper based SSD’s in the OCZ product catalogue.

Getting a Vertex drive in to the eTeknix labs has always got us excited and as we’ve said before, it is drives like this one that gets the inner enthusiast inside each of us buzzing, so without delaying you any more, lets get tucked in and have another serving of some Vertex goodness from OCZ.

VESA Announces New Mobility DisplayPort Standard

The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) today announced the release of the Mobility DisplayPort (MyDP) Standard. MyDP is an extension of the DisplayPort connectivity standard that enables mobile devices to share high-definition video, audio, and 3D content with the broad universe of larger external displays through common, widely adopted connectors. Offering the industry’s highest mobile-to-display image resolution, MyDP allows consumers to experience their mobile content in full, uncompressed 1080p (HDTV).

“Today’s mobile devices with powerful processors and mass storage capacities have become the new hub of media content,” said Soumendra Mohanty, senior director of marketing for Analogix. “However, consumers wish to experience their mobile content in a more diverse manner, beyond what a four-inch screen can offer. MyDP gives the industry a standard interface to break down screen size limitations, and Analogix is ready today with its compatible SlimPort products.”

With the MyDP standard, high-quality audio, video, and 3D content can be shared from a mobile device to a larger external DisplayPort or HDMI equipped display, including a PC monitor, digital signage display or HDTV, using the micro-USB connector found on the majority of smartphones and tablets. By leveraging a simple passive cable, consumers can instantly experience their content at 1080P full HD resolution, 24-bit color, and 60Hz. Consumers can also access the millions of legacy DVI and VGA displays, projectors and TVs through the use of MyDP adaptors and active converters. The MyDP interface also includes a robust 1Mbps sideband channel that provides enough bandwidth to support accessory functions including multi-touch, keyboard, mouse, and remote control of the external display. Furthermore, MyDP enables charging of the mobile device battery, through the MyDP cable, from the power provided by the DisplayPort-enabled display, while content is enjoyed.

“MyDP is a win-win for consumers and technology manufacturers,” said Ganesh Tekkatte, senior product marketing manager at STMicroelectronics. “MyDP is simple and flexible allowing content to be shared with today’s displays through common connectors that are widely adopted, and will support the advanced media and connectivity standards through the foreseeable future.”

Backed by VESA’s nearly 180 member companies, MyDP adoption is expected in next-generation tablets, ultrabooks, and smartphones, with the first products scheduled to ship in the fourth quarter of 2012. MyDP’s simple plug-and-play functionality with any external display benefits the entire mobile ecosystem by enabling better experiences and the delivery of new features and services. Consumers will benefit from the entertainment and productivity value of viewing and editing mobile content on a large screen; hardware manufacturers can evolve their systems to have more robust business and gaming features; software developers can create more mobile-centric office and 3D entertainment apps; and carriers can provide a variety of new value-added services to leverage data plans and sell accessories like cables, docking stations, and more.

“Consumers expect their mobile devices to interface with other CE products. However, in order to get this functionality, consumers are often forced to either purchase products from a single vendor, or leverage interfaces that have limited industry backing and adoption,” said Bill Lempesis, executive director of VESA. “MyDP is an open standard that is backed by a large ecosystem of the leading technology companies. This gives consumers the ability to choose the devices they want, and share whatever content wherever they go.”

ADATA launches the XPG SX910 SSD

ADATA launches the XPG SX910 solid state drive, a significant broadening of the popular and powerful XPG line of storage products. The SX910 features a 7% capacity increase over common SSDs that use a SandForce controller, delivering a powerful combination of capacity and high performance with a five-year warranty.

The ADATA XPG SX910 uses new optimized firmware to maximize utilization of the NAND Flash components, allowing for full use of the available storage capacity. This zero percent over-provisioning in the design and engineering of the SX910 is implemented with no loss to performance: maximum 4k random read/write speeds are 50,000 and 85,000 IOPS respectively, with sequential read and write speeds reaching 550 and 530MB/sec.

In addition, the SX910 undergoes an improved screening process for the Flash IC chip selection. This results in improved stability and performance, that is demonstrated by the five-year warranty that comes as standard for this SSD. Inno3D iChiLL GTX 670 HerculeZ 3000 Edition 2GB Graphics Card Review

This year has been a fantastic one so far for graphics card manufacturers and their relevant partners, with AMD and Nvidia battling it out for the GPU crown of 2012, though AMD started things early in late December, and managed to get the upper hand on the green team.

If you’d like to take a look at the majority of cards that we’ve seen grace the market, we invite you to check out our graphics review section which can be found here. You’ll find some of the big players mainly from AMD and their associated partners, whereas Nvidia simply don’t like us, so that’s the reasoning behind the lack of Nvidia cards that we had at launch. One of these cards was the GTX 670, which was released to give a slight edge over the competition in the biggest war at the moment; price.

The GTX 680 took the crown away from AMD and the Radeon 7970, but was substantially more expensive at launch, and Nvidia knew that something had to be done, and fast. This is where the GTX 670 came into the world, and offered similar performance to its bigger brother, but with a much more attractive price tag.

Shortly after the launch, we find Nvidia board partners developing their own flavours which custom coolers and extreme overclocks, and you can’t get much more extreme than what we have on offer here today as we take a look at the Inno3D iChiLL GTX 670 HerculeZ 3000 Edition, with an immense custom cooling solution and pre-factory overclocks to boot.

For our frequent readers, you know the way that we do things, but for those who don’t, we will first take a look at the packaging and bundle that Inno3D have on offer, before we take a closer look at the card itself including the features and cooler.

Once this is out of the way, we can throw this card straight in and test through our usual suspects of benchmarks at the most popular resolutions including triple screen 5760×1080.

Valve announce the Source Film maker

Valve today announced the Source Filmmaker (SFM) and the release of “Meet the Pyro.”The SFM is a storytelling tool Valve developed inside the Source Engine to create all its animated short films, including those in the “Meet the Team” series of Team Fortress 2 shorts. The SFM condenses the production pipeline of an animation studio down onto a single gaming PC.

To celebrate the announcement of the SFM, Valve also released the ninth and final short in the “Meet the Team” series today, “Meet the Pyro.”

“The goal of the SFM was to develop a story telling tool that allowed us to create computer animated movies more efficiently, and with greater creative freedom,” said Bay Raitt, designer at Valve. “Over the past five years, we’ve produced more than 50 animated shorts with the SFM. The Source Filmmaker will allow our community to create their own movies in Team Fortress 2 and in their own Source SDK-created mods.”

The SFM is currently in closed beta and will be made available – free of charge – later this year via Steam. More information on the SFM may be found at www.sourcefilmmaker.com

CM Storm QuickFire Pro Mechanical Keyboard Review

CM Storm are a fairly new company to join the peripheral market with products aimed exclusively at gamers. We’ve seen the likes of mechanical keyboards, feature rich mice, and even surround sound headsets come from CM Storm. Not only do they produce PC peripherals, but also cases, which we’ve reviewed in the past. Today we get to take a look at the latest mechanical keyboard to be released by the company. Read on to see why we got a little bit excited.

We’ve reviewed a lot of keyboards at eTeknix, with the majority of them being high end mechanical keyboards that would set you back an organ or two. With these mechanical keyboards, we’ve seen different flavours of switches, with the Cherry Blacks being the most popular for gamers. Today we get to test out Cherry MX Red switches, which are similar to Blacks in feel and motion, but require slightly less actuation force. Many gamers prefer red switches due to the lighter touch required, so you often see them on some of the higher end boards, which is the case with today’s keyboard – the CM Storm QuickFire Pro.

Slightly similar to the QuickFire Rapid, this keyboard features a full layout (the Rapid does not have a numpad), partial backlighting and of course Cherry MX Red switches instead of black. See below for the spec from CM Storm’s site:

  • Mechanical CHERRY MX switches
  • USB 2.0 full speed
  • NKRO in USB mode
  • Multimedia shortcuts
  • 1000Hz/1ms response time
  • Windows key disabled in game mode
  • Partial Red LED backlight
  • Removable braided USB cable with cable routing
As you can read, there are a fair amount of features packed into this keyboard, so lets take the jump and see how it looks.
